How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 44
Lu Wei’s heart tightened abruptly, and she swallowed dryly. Her gaze was fixed on the name flashing repeatedly on the screen, her panic overwhelming as if she were holding a hot potato. For the first time, she wished she could throw her phone far, far away.
Fortunately, the ringing stopped after just a short while.
Lu Wei let out a sigh of relief, her entire body slumping into the chair. At the same time, those words began swirling in her mind again. She couldn’t help but think that in Chen Yushu’s heart, he must have long been dissatisfied with her.
Perhaps even disgusted.
So, would there come a day when Chen Yushu could no longer bear it and simply leave her without a word?
But was she really that terrible? Lu Wei couldn’t help but fall into self-doubt. When had all of this even started?
Scenes from the past kept resurfacing as Lu Wei tried to pinpoint her own wrongdoings.
Indeed, ever since starting university, Chen Yushu had changed a lot. She should have noticed it sooner he had expressed his dissatisfaction with her, both directly and indirectly.
The more Lu Wei thought about it, the sadder she became. Tears unknowingly streaked her cheeks, and gradually, she felt a chill run through her body, her teeth chattering uncontrollably.
Someone in the dormitory was watching a drama, laughter echoing as if from another world. Lu Wei’s ears buzzed, and everything around her felt unreal.
In her daze, she heard someone call her name. She quickly lowered her head and climbed onto her bed.
“What’s wrong? You’ve been acting strange since you got back,” An Nan came over and asked.
Lu Wei lay down, turning her back to An Nan, and mumbled, “I might not be feeling well. I’ll sleep for a bit.”
“Okay, then get some rest,” An Nan said as she walked away. “Song Xin, keep it down. Put on your headphones.”
The dormitory quickly quieted down. Lu Wei pulled the blanket over herself, curling up on the bed. Her body was so tense that her back began to ache. Emotions seemed to weave into a net, wrapping tightly around her, constricting further and further.
Her nose was completely blocked, making it impossible to breathe, so she had to open her mouth and take small, shallow breaths.
Just then, her phone rang again.
Lu Wei’s scalp prickled. She switched her phone to silent and buried her head in the pillow like an ostrich.
But the silence only amplified her anxiety. Within seconds, she retrieved her phone.
The caller ID still showed Chen Yushu.
But she was crying, her face a mess of tears and snot there was no way she could answer the call. Lu Wei hastily grabbed a tissue and wiped her face haphazardly. Then, carefully, she held the phone to her ear and tentatively said, “Hello?” Her voice was thick with nasal congestion, a clear sign that something was wrong.
She was even more afraid that hearing Chen Yushu’s voice would make her burst into tears. In the brief moment she hesitated, the call ended.
Instantly, Lu Wei’s heart felt hollow. Disappointment and sorrow rose to her throat, and two streams of tears slid down her cheeks.
Forget it. Maybe it was for the best.
Lu Wei tightened her grip on the blanket. Suddenly, the words from her little notebook flashed through her mind indifference, disdain.
No! She couldn’t let Chen Yushu misunderstand her any further!
Sniffling, Lu Wei quickly took out her phone to send a message. But her vision was too blurred by tears to see clearly. Helpless, she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and slowly typed out a message, explaining that she wasn’t feeling well and had returned early.
As soon as she sent the message, Lu Wei remembered Chen Yushu calling her dishonest and a liar. Instantly, her lips trembled, and tears welled up again. Afraid of making any noise, she bit down on the blanket, buried her face in the pillow, and began to sob quietly.
Her phone vibrated Chen Yushu had replied quickly. Lu Wei’s heart tightened. Though still steeped in sorrow, she forced herself to hold back her tears and pulled out her phone to check the message.
Chen Yushu: Where are you feeling unwell? I can go with you to the campus clinic.
In her current state, Lu Wei didn’t dare face her. She hurriedly replied: No need, I’m fine. I’ve already gone to bed it’s nothing serious.
Chen Yushu: Alright. Do you have any medicine? Take some before you sleep. Is anyone in your dorm? I can bring some over.
Lu Wei was still choked up with sobs, unable to stop immediately. Seeing the message, her eyes grew hot, and she nearly started crying again.
It seemed Chen Yushu still cared about her, and her heart eased a little. But then she couldn’t help thinking even an ordinary friend would show concern when they heard someone was sick. This didn’t prove anything.
The tears she had just managed to hold back surged forth again. Lu Wei’s chest tightened, and she felt so miserable she could hardly breathe. Still, she forced herself to reply: I’ve taken medicine. It’s just a minor issue I’ll be fine by tomorrow.
Chen Yushu: Then rest well. Let’s skip our outing tomorrow.
Lu Wei wiped her tears and only then remembered she had made plans with Chen Yushu to go out for barbecue the next day.
She paused for a second, her mind racing. Chen Yushu already disliked her so much if she deliberately avoided her and stood her up, wouldn’t Chen Yushu just discard her like trash once she found better friends?!
Instantly, Lu Wei’s throat tightened, and her heart ached sharply. Clutching the blanket tightly, she couldn’t stop the panic rising within her. That couldn’t happen! She absolutely couldn’t let their friendship end!
But… since Chen Yushu was still willing to hang out with her, maybe things hadn’t reached the worst point yet. If she tried hard enough, maybe she could still fix this.
Yes! Fix it! She could still fix it!
Lu Wei’s eyes lit up, and she immediately perked up, quickly typing: I’m fine now! I’ll be ready to go on time tomorrow!
Chen Yushu: Maybe we should reschedule?
Lu Wei: No need, tomorrow is fine. I’ve already picked a place.
They went back and forth, unable to reach an agreement, and finally decided to see how things were the next day.
After putting down her phone, Lu Wei’s tear-streaked face hadn’t even dried. Thinking more carefully, she couldn’t help but feel sorrow wash over her again.
Her roommates gradually left the dorm to eat. Lu Wei sat up and glanced around. Seeing no one was there, she could no longer hold back and began to cry aloud.
Chen Yushu hated her she hated her. The more Lu Wei cried, the more heartbroken she felt. She had always thought she and Chen Yushu were the best of friends, but only today did she realize Chen Yushu had long been fed up with her.
For a while, Lu Wei couldn’t recover from the shock. She didn’t know how long she cried, only stopping when her throat grew hoarse, but the tears still wouldn’t stop falling.
Just then, the sound of her roommates laughing and chatting came from outside the door. Lu Wei hurriedly wiped her tears, but her eyes were red and swollen, she couldn’t possibly let anyone see her like this. She had no choice but to lie back down.
“Lu Wei, are you feeling better?” Jiang Yunxi came to her bedside and asked.
Lu Wei made a vague sound and mumbled, “Much better.”
“Then get up and eat something,” Jiang Yunxi said. “I ran into Jiang Yuran and your friend on the way, they.”
Hearing this, Lu Wei immediately sat up. “When?”
“Just now. What’s with you.”
Lu Wei quickly lowered her head to hide her expression. “Nothing. What did you just say about them?”
“Here.” Jiang Yunxi held up the items in his hand for her to see. “Your friend asked me to bring this to you.”
The tempting aroma of food wafted over. She hadn’t felt hungry before, but now, a sudden pang of hunger struck, and Lu Wei’s stomach immediately growled. “Did Chen Yushu buy this?”
“Yeah, I happened to run into her, so I brought it back on the way.”
Lu Wei scrambled down from the bed and rummaged through the bag. Besides dinner, there were some common medicines.
Just then, Chen Yushu sent a message telling her to eat quickly.
Lu Wei couldn’t help but smile, a sweet feeling bubbling up inside her. Chen Yushu still cared about her!
She replied with an “okay,” then sat down, opened the food container, and fanned the aroma toward her nose. Though it looked light, it smelled delicious, instantly sparking her appetite. She immediately began eating heartily.
Maybe she was truly hungry, or perhaps for some other reason, Lu Wei felt that today’s porridge was exceptionally sweet and fragrant.
After finishing the last bite, she put down her chopsticks, leaned back in her chair, and let out a satisfied burp. Right in front of her were the medicines Chen Yushu had given her, each box carefully labeled with sticky notes detailing the symptoms, dosage, and precautions.
Lu Wei’s nose tingled with emotion again. She quickly sniffed, holding back tears, and secretly resolved to change the impression she had left on Chen Yushu!
Burp!
Feeling a bit too full, Lu Wei rested for a moment before pulling herself together. She found paper and a pen, recalling the words from Chen Yushu’s notebook, and carefully wrote them down one by one. After finishing each word, she stared at the paper for a long time, full of doubt.
Is this me? Am I really like this?!
Where did things go wrong? This misunderstanding is huge! I must do something to change Chen Yushu’s opinion of me!
Grumbling as she wrote, Lu Wei flipped through the pages several times before starting to ponder a solution.
However, after thinking for a long while, she couldn’t come up with a concrete plan. If it were too obvious, Chen Yushu would surely think she was being hypocritical and insincere.
Lu Wei bit her lip and finally decided she must change quietly, like a spring breeze nurturing rain, subtly soothing Chen Yushu’s heart.
Action now!
First, tomorrow’s outing being flirtatious and frivolous? That would have to be addressed gradually.
Casual and indifferent?
Lu Wei circled that word, pondered for a long time, then nodded seriously and solemnly. Okay, she understood!
The next day.
As soon as Chen Yushu woke up, she received a message from Lu Wei.
[Chen Yushu, look outside it’s snowing!]
As someone from the south, Chen Yushu rarely saw snow. The moment she read the message, she couldn’t wait to get out of bed and look, but she first asked, [How are you feeling?]
Lu Wei: [I’m completely better now. Come down quickly and see the snow it’s really heavy!]
Others in the dorm were still asleep, so Chen Yushu quietly climbed down from her bed, opened the door, and stepped onto the balcony to look down. The world was blanketed in white, a silvery landscape. Then, her gaze paused, landing on the figure standing in the snow.
The moment Chen Yushu peeked out, Lu Wei spotted her immediately. At first, an explosion of joy burst in her chest she thought the snow suited Chen Yushu perfectly. But when their eyes met, Lu Wei forgot everything in an instant: the snow vanished, and all she saw was the person.
Just then, the figure on the balcony waved at her. Lu Wei snapped back to reality and eagerly raised both hands, responding with enthusiasm.
“Why are you grinning like a fool?” Chen Yushu shook her head with a laugh, then sent her a message telling her to hurry back inside before she caught a cold.
After typing, she looked up again and saw a flower blooming in the snow. Lu Wei hopped around beside it, stomping out her name before finishing it off with a heart.
Chen Yushu couldn’t resist raising her phone and quickly snapped two photos before Lu Wei turned around.
A memento of her first time seeing the first snow in the north, she thought to herself.
After finishing the last step, Lu Wei looked up and saw Chen Yushu leaning on the windowsill, seemingly unimpressed. She quickly pulled out her phone and typed: 【Do you like it?】
Chen Yushu: 【Mm, it’s quite pretty.】
Lu Wei’s heart leaped with delight, and she added: 【A little flower just for you. They say if you make a wish on it, it’ll come true.】
Chen Yushu: 【Really? Then I wish for you to hurry back to the dorm right now.】
“Huh?” Lu Wei stared at her phone screen, crestfallen. 【That one doesn’t count. Make another wish.】
Chen Yushu: 【Sigh, if even this wish can’t come true, I don’t dare ask for anything else.】
Lu Wei: 【Alright, alright, I’ll go back. See, I’m fine now. Let’s go out and play later, okay?】
Chen Yushu replied with an “okay” and watched as Lu Wei entered the dorm building. She lingered on the balcony a while longer, until the snow grew heavier and blanketed the ground, then finally went inside.
Two hours later, Chen Yushu finished getting ready, sent Lu Wei a message, and headed out.
As soon as she stepped downstairs, she saw Lu Wei. Instantly, Chen Yushu’s breath caught with just one glance, her eyes were fixed, unable to look away.
