How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 27.2
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear just that coincidental. A beam of white light suddenly shone from the distance, accompanied by the discipline head’s booming voice, “Who’s there? Which class are you from?”
“Want to recreate the scene?” Lu Wei blinked mischievously, suddenly turning around, placing her hands on Chen Yushu’s shoulders, leaning in, and lowering her head slightly.
Before Chen Yushu could react, she felt warm breath brush against her face, their noses touching, lips seemingly just inches apart.
Instantly, her breath hitched, and her entire body froze in place. All her senses heightened infinitely as scalding blood rushed to her neck and cheeks, her temperature skyrocketing.
Fortunately, the night was as dark as ink, concealing that flush of red.
“He’s coming! Run!” Lu Wei, who had been keeping an eye on the back, saw the discipline head indeed driving over and quickly grabbed Chen Yushu’s hand, pulling her forward as they ran.
The discipline head immediately picked up his loudspeaker and shouted, “What are you doing? Which class are you from? Stop right there!”
Chen Yushu snapped back to reality and instinctively followed Lu Wei’s pace.
Lu Wei ran while looking back, strands of her hair carrying the gentle evening breeze as they lightly brushed against Chen Yushu’s face. The white light behind them chased after the two, casting ever-shifting shadows on the ground.
They soon reached a dead end. Lu Wei released her and leaned against the wall, arms and legs spread wide. Chen Yushu propped her hands on her knees, and in the desolate corner, only the sound of their panting and the furious shouts of the discipline director from behind remained.
“Stop running! Which classes are you in? Who are your homeroom teachers?” The discipline director, flashlight in hand, got down from the patrol cart and jogged closer.
Lu Wei cupped her hands around her mouth like a megaphone and shouted, “I’m from Class 9, Grade 3, and she’s from Class 3, Grade 3.”
“Why aren’t you in class? What are you doing here?” The discipline director scolded, hands on her hips. “Both of you, come here!”
Lu Wei chuckled and turned to Chen Yushu, saying, “Come on, let’s make an appearance.”
“Lu Wei, are you insane?” Chen Yushu covered her face with her hands, unable to resist lowering her head to curse at her. “Nothing good ever happens when I’m with you!”
The discipline director yelled again, “Hurry up and come here!”
Chen Yushu shot Lu Wei a fierce glare, sighed in resignation, and walked toward the discipline director. “Teacher Liu, it’s me.”
“Oh, Chen Yushu!” Recognizing her, the discipline director’s tone immediately softened, then she looked behind her in confusion. “Then the other one must be Lu Wei?”
“Teacher Liu still remembers me,” Lu Wei said as she walked over, one arm slung around Chen Yushu’s neck, looking exactly like a delinquent girl abducting a well-behaved one.
Sure enough, the discipline director’s expression, which had just softened, instantly turned disdainful. “You’re everywhere! Even after graduating, you still won’t let me have peace.”
Lu Wei replied, “Not at all! We’re just demonstrating for you. If you act like this, you’ll never catch anyone for puppy love.”
Hearing this, the discipline director smiled and asked, “Oh, really? Then how should I catch them?”
“It’s simple,” Lu Wei said calmly. “When you spot a couple, don’t shout right away. Sneak up quietly. Otherwise, with one yell, you’ll scare them off like birds, and then who are you going to catch?”
The discipline director nodded thoughtfully. “You sound quite experienced.”
Lu Wei protested, “Don’t wrong me I’ve never been in puppy love. Chen Yushu can vouch for me.”
Chen Yushu gave an innocent look. “I don’t know anything.”
“Hahahaha, class is almost over. I’ll try your method later. If it works, I’ll definitely praise you in front of the whole school,” the discipline director laughed.
“What?” Lu Wei exclaimed in shock. “Teacher Liu, that’s so unfair! You’re killing the donkey!”
Chen Yushu couldn’t hold back a snort of laughter. “It’s ‘killing the donkey after it’s done its job,’ you illiterate.”
“Hahaha, even though you hang around a top student every day, it doesn’t seem to have improved your knowledge much. Oh, I almost forgot I have something to do. I’ll head off now. Come back and visit when you have time this will always be your home.” With that, the discipline director got on her patrol cart and waved at them.
“Goodbye, Teacher Liu.”
“Alright, we’ll be back, Teacher Liu.”
As the white light gradually faded into the distance, Chen Yushu felt a pang of sadness, her nose tingling. Just then, she suddenly felt Lu Wei gently rub the back of her head.
“Don’t worry, there’s still winter break, summer break we have plenty of time. With a troublemaker like me around, they won’t get to relax anytime soon.”
Chen Yushu burst into laughter. “You actually know that?”
Lu Wei replied, “A person’s greatest virtue is self-awareness.”
Under the cover of night, the two chatted as they walked toward the school gate. As they approached the path near the entrance, the clamor from the teaching building drifted faintly from afar, and soon, the campus broadcast began playing the music signaling the end of evening self-study.
It was an English song.
She still remembered how, during their school days, this was always their happiest moment.
Not only did it mark the end of a tiring day, but it also meant they could walk together along that short nighttime path, which always seemed to pass too quickly.
Or perhaps it could be said that every moment they could spend together was filled with immense joy.
“Do you hear me
I’m talking to you
Across the water across the.”
The song poured out like a cascade.
Lu Wei walked backward, swaying gently, her arms moving freely as she immersed herself in the music, thoroughly enjoying it.
Chen Yushu followed quietly, her hands clasped behind her back, a soft smile playing on her lips.
As the song reached its climax, Lu Wei sang along:
“You make it easier when life gets hard
I’m lucky I’m in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again”
Chen Yushu’s gaze danced across Lu Wei’s brows, eyes, and lips. When Lu Wei reached out a hand to her, she didn’t take it, yet with every step, she drew closer.
Their eyes met, and in the depths of each other’s gaze, they danced an entire dance.
The growing clamor of voices drew nearer, serving as the perfect backdrop, as if they had been transported back to the past in an instant.
It turned out that the stirrings of the heart had long been preserved in every night, only to awaken once more today.
The holiday quickly reached its midpoint. After spending two days at home, someone suddenly posted in their group chat, asking if anyone wanted to hang out.
The group had five members in total: besides the couple they had played games with the other day, there was another friend, all of whom they had known since middle school.
At that moment, Chen Yushu was curled up under Lu Wei’s blanket, reading a book. When Lu Wei saw the message, she immediately asked, “Qi An and the others are asking us to hang out. Should we go?”
Chen Yushu asked, “When?”
“Uh, now,” Lu Wei said, looking at her phone. “Qi An and the others are in West City right now. We can grab a meal first, then head to KTV. How does that sound?”
“If you want to go, we can,” Chen Yushu lifted her head. “But first, no drinking. Second, we come back early. Otherwise, I’ll leave you stranded on the street and won’t care about you.”
Lu Wei looked up at her indignantly. “Are you a tyrant? Why do you get to decide?”
“Hmm?” Chen Yushu lazily lifted her eyelids and gave her a glance.
“Fine, I’ll listen to you,” Lu Wei huffed.
When the two arrived in West City, they only found Qi An waiting for them.
Chen Yushu asked, “Where are the others?”
Qi An closed her eyes in frustration, planting her hands on her hips. “Don’t even ask! Those two jerks ditched me to go watch a movie!”
“Hahaha” Lu Wei burst into laughter without restraint, patting Qi An’s shoulder. “Well, what did you expect, insisting on tagging along as a third wheel?”
“But how did they even end up together?” Qi An was utterly baffled. “I thought we were all friends, and now they’re feeding me dog food! Is there no justice in this world?”
Chen Yushu and Lu Wei exchanged a glance, both bursting into laughter.
Qi Yan immediately turned her attention to the two of them. “You two better not follow their example! Otherwise, I’ll really be done for.”
At this, Chen Yushu shifted her gaze uncomfortably. The next moment, she felt something soft and moist press against her cheek, lingering only for an instant before pulling away.
“Lu Wei, you.” Qi Yan pointed at her, her anger boiling over, but she could only grit her teeth and swallow her frustration. “You’re something else.”
Lu Wei flashed a triumphant smile, as if to say, “What are you going to do about it?”
Chen Yushu rolled her eyes expressionlessly, inwardly scoffing. So frivolous!
Her earlier observations had been spot on!
The three of them grabbed a meal nearby, and by chance, the other two had just finished watching a movie. The five of them gathered and headed to a KTV, where they booked a small private room.
As soon as they settled in, the only couple in the group began acting lovey-dovey, filling the room with the cloying scent of romance.
Zhou Rongrong cooed, “Baby, my waist hurts a little.”
Ran Qin replied, “Let me rub it for you. Feeling better now, honey?”
The other three sat to the side, all turning their gazes toward the couple in unison.
Qi Yan fumed, “See? See what they’re like? This is the kind of life I have to endure every day!”
A light, cheerful love song started playing, and Ran Qin and Zhou Rongrong began singing as if no one else was in the room.
The other three wore identical expressions of secondhand embarrassment, all turning their heads away in unison.
