How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 87
Cheng Wan’s postpartum recovery had truly begun.
There were two maternity nurses and one housekeeper at home. The three of them were either taking care of little Sui Sui or attending to Cheng Wan.
Both maternity nurses were very experienced. They often praised Sui Sui for being easy to care for. She would fall asleep with just a little comforting and feed without any fuss. This allowed them to focus more energy on looking after Cheng Wan.
Unlike the others in the house, Cheng Wan’s meals were specially prepared. They included meat, vegetables, soup, and rice, with new dishes every day. The food tasted quite good too.
Back when only Aunt Pei was handling the kitchen, it had been fine. But now, with two more people sharing the space, the kitchen started to feel a bit too crowded.
Bai Weilan was the type who couldn’t sit still. Since returning, she had made plans every day. She was either out shopping or visiting the company to check the finances. To Cheng Wan, this was a relief.
At least she didn’t have to see Bai Weilan every single day.
Still…
Cheng Wan glanced at the card on her nightstand. She knew she needed to talk to her. Sui Sui wasn’t some bargaining chip, and she was never going to accept that one hundred million yuan.
“Wanwan, it’s time to eat,” Aunt Pei called from the first floor. “It’s just us today. Juntang and Madam both went to the company.”
Cheng Wan stepped out of her room and asked, “They’re both gone?”
“Yes,” Aunt Pei replied with a smile. “Come down quickly. Your meal is ready. Eat it while it’s hot.”
When Cheng Wan came downstairs, she saw a maternity nurse bringing her meal out. The nurse carefully laid out the dishes in front of her and also served her a bowl of fish soup.
“We made fresh fish today,” the nurse said. “This soup is really good for your recovery. Drinking more will help your body.”
Aunt Pei stood nearby, nodding enthusiastically. She looked especially happy that someone supported her opinion.
After setting the table for Cheng Wan, the others went to the small dining area in the kitchen to eat. One of the nurses had to care for Sui Sui, so they took turns eating.
Now, the stylish and elegant dining table had only Cheng Wan sitting at it. Although several delicious dishes were in front of her, she still felt a little lonely. She found herself missing Bai Juntang a bit.
After lunch, one of the nurses brought the baby downstairs.
“The weather’s nice today. It’s a great time to let the baby get some sunlight in the yard,” the nurse said. She handed Sui Sui to Cheng Wan and sat beside her. “By the way, do you have a cat?”
Cheng Wan nodded. “Yes, but she’s shy and mostly stays in the basement. Aunt Pei made her a little nest down there. We usually only see her at night.”
“That’s normal for cats. Has she had her health checkups?”
“Yes, they’re always done on schedule.”
The nurse made some light conversation with Cheng Wan. Once Aunt Pei and the others had finished eating, they switched shifts and prepared to take Sui Sui outside to enjoy the sun.
They put a cute pink hat on Sui Sui, and Aunt Pei even tied a little bow on it. Sui Sui sat quietly, staring blankly at Aunt Pei. She looked incredibly sweet.
The weather was especially nice that day. The sun was gentle, and the breeze was soft. The trees in the yard were starting to turn yellow. Autumn was clearly on its way.
While Cheng Wan relaxed in the sunshine at home, things were very different at the company. Bai Juntang and Bai Weilan were in meetings all day.
Even when she was overseas, Bai Weilan wasn’t just on vacation. She was also handling international project negotiations. If she found a good one, she would pass it along to Qian Valley. So she was mainly responsible for the overseas division.
Now that she was back in the country, the board and department heads quickly arranged meetings. They reviewed all the current projects and gave her all the necessary documents. Just today, they went over financial reports for the first three quarters. The two of them had been working non-stop until nightfall, and neither of them had shown any signs of leaving.
Li Chen was used to this. In the past, when Bai Juntang was still single, he had followed her around the world, working late nights and taking countless business trips. Compared to those days, staying in the office late didn’t seem that bad.
However, the new secretaries weren’t used to this work pace. Since Bai Juntang and Bai Weilan were still in the office, none of the assistants dared to go home.
Many of the young women held their phones, chatting with their boyfriends and complaining about how they had to work overtime again.
Li Chen, who managed the team, started assigning tasks like preparing reports and organizing documents.
“Instead of complaining, finish your work. If the two bosses are in a good mood, they might let us go early,” he said as he gently tapped Xiaomi on the head. “Go make two cups of coffee. I’ll take them into the office.”
Everyone knew Li Chen was going in to check on the situation. They quickly prepared the coffee and watched eagerly as he walked toward the executive office with two cups in hand.
Knock knock knock.
Li Chen tapped on the door and called out, “President Bai, Chairwoman, I brought you both some coffee.”
“Come in,” Bai Juntang replied.
Li Chen opened the door and stepped into the large, spacious office. Papers were scattered across the floor. He carefully avoided stepping on them and placed the coffee cups on the desk.
“It’s almost eight o’clock,” he said. “Would you like me to order dinner for you?”
Bai Juntang glanced at him and said, “It’s that late already?”
Li Chen nodded.
Bai Weilan was wearing glasses. She didn’t say anything in response and kept reading the documents in her hands.
Seeing that she didn’t respond, Li Chen thickened his skin and asked, “Chairwoman, would you like me to order something for you? No matter how busy work gets, dinner is still important.”
Bai Weilan gave a quiet “Mm” and picked up the coffee cup for a sip. “The coffee is quite good.”
Li Chen smiled. “It was made by Secretary Xiaomi.”
“It’s just the flavor I like. Have her make a couple more cups later. I’m staying up all night,” Bai Weilan said calmly.
As soon as she said that, Li Chen felt awkward. He had hoped that Bai Weilan might kindly let everyone go home early. But instead, he had accidentally volunteered Xiaomi to make more coffee.
It seemed that as long as Bai Weilan was staying, no one else could leave.
Bai Juntang, feeling bad for her team, spoke up. “It’s already quite late. Let’s continue tomorrow. Otherwise, the company will have to pay overtime to everyone still working.”
Hearing the word “overtime,” Bai Weilan finally looked up, checked the time, and said with a bit of surprise, “It’s already eight? Alright, let everyone clock out. Make sure all unused devices are shut off. No need to waste electricity.”
Li Chen felt truly moved and quickly asked, “What about you and President Bai?”
Bai Juntang knew exactly what he was thinking. He just wanted to ask if he still needed to drive them home. She waved her hand. “You can head home too. The Chairwoman and I will go back on our own.”
Li Chen was sincerely touched. “Okay.”
After everyone had left, Bai Weilan finally put down the documents, leaned back in her chair, took off her glasses, and rubbed her tired eyes.
“I’m getting old. It’s not even that late, but I’m already exhausted. I used to be able to pull two all-nighters in a row,” she said with a sigh.
Bai Juntang gave her mother a helpless look. “Do you even realize how old you are now?”
It was rare for Bai Weilan to hear a joke from Bai Juntang, and she found it refreshing. She also knew that it really wasn’t a good time to work overtime anymore, so she decided to chat with her daughter for a bit.
She casually picked up a magazine from the desk and flipped through it. Noticing the date on the cover, she asked, “This magazine is from a few months ago, isn’t it? Why are you still keeping it?”
Bai Juntang glanced at the magazine, a faint smile appearing in her eyes. “That was the first magazine Cheng Wan helped design. I thought it looked great, so I kept a copy.”
Bai Weilan looked a little surprised. She flipped to the back, and sure enough, she found Cheng Wan’s name listed under the editorial credits.
“Was Cheng Wan an editor before?” she asked casually.
“No, she was just a junior employee at one of our branches. Later, when Qian Valley partnered with that magazine, she was assigned to do the layout and design,” Bai Juntang replied. She got up from the sofa, walked over to her mother, and glanced down at the magazine. “They didn’t make many changes to her draft, so I think they were pretty happy with her work.”
Bai Weilan didn’t say anything at first. She just flipped through a few more pages.
Then she looked closely at the layout and small design touches. Cheng Wan had clearly put a lot of care into the details. Even the page corners had subtle, thoughtful elements. It caught Bai Weilan off guard.
“Juntang, what exactly do you like about Cheng Wan?” she asked, eyes still scanning the pages.
Bai Juntang hadn’t noticed those details. She answered simply, “I’m not sure.”
“But when I’m with her, I feel a kind of peace I’ve never felt before.” She looked at her mother. “Mom, I really do love Cheng Wan.”
Bai Weilan closed the magazine and stood up. “I’ve got eyes of my own. I’ll judge for myself.”
She turned to Bai Juntang. “It’s late. Let’s go home. I haven’t seen Sui Sui all day and I already miss her.”
Watching her mother gather her things and walk out, Bai Juntang couldn’t help but grumble inwardly. Was she the only one who missed Sui Sui? She had worked all day too, and not only missed the baby—she missed Cheng Wan even more.
On the way home, Bai Weilan took out her phone and placed a food order. She said she was hungry and asked Aunt Pei to make her some zhajiang noodles.
Even though Bai Weilan was in her late forties, when she asked for noodles like that, she really did seem like a spoiled little girl.
As soon as they got home, Bai Weilan went straight upstairs to see little Sui Sui. Bai Juntang didn’t move as quickly. She stood in the hallway for a moment, watching her mother rush upstairs, then turned and walked into the living room where Cheng Wan was sitting.
“You’re back,” Cheng Wan said. She stood up slowly, one hand supporting her lower back.
Seeing her like that, Bai Juntang walked over, gently placed a hand on Cheng Wan’s waist, and asked with concern, “What’s wrong? Is your back sore?”
Cheng Wan shook her head and took Bai Juntang’s hand, placing it on her stomach.
“The maternity nurse said I haven’t recovered very well, so she wants me to wear a belly wrap,” Cheng Wan said, tilting her head back with a helpless expression. “It’s really tight.”
Hearing that, Bai Juntang couldn’t help but laugh. She wrapped her arms around Cheng Wan, breathing in the soft white peach scent of her pheromones. Stroking her waist, she said gently, “If it’s too uncomfortable, just take it off. I’ve seen you in every possible way anyway.”
