How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 82
The news that Bai Weilan was coming back really took Bai Juntang by surprise. The last time they saw each other was when she had just met Cheng Wan. They had crossed paths at a cemetery, and after that, Bai Weilan went abroad for more than half a year without even making a single phone call.
Bai Juntang sometimes wondered if Bai Weilan was just born emotionally distant. She had never seen her show much care for anyone, except for her late wife.
“What time is your flight tomorrow morning?” Bai Juntang paused for a long moment before asking, “I’ll arrange for someone to pick you up.”
“It’s a 9 a.m. flight, if there are no delays.” Bai Weilan’s voice was soft on the other end of the line. She spoke calmly, “I don’t return home often. Aren’t you planning to pick me up yourself?”
Since Bai Weilan had already put it so plainly, Bai Juntang gave a dry laugh and nodded. “Alright. I’ll come pick you up tomorrow.”
“I’ve sent you the flight details. Have someone pick up my luggage. There’s quite a lot, so you might need to send two cars.” Bai Weilan laughed lightly. “See you tomorrow.”
After hanging up, Bai Juntang leaned her elbow against the window sill and absentmindedly rubbed her cheek as she stared out the window.
To be honest, the only lasting image she had of Bai Weilan, other than her serious personality, was her in a black dress, standing in front of her mother’s grave.
Back then, Bai Juntang was still young and didn’t have a deep memory of her biological mother. She only knew her as a fragile, sickly woman. Even though Bai Weilan had gone to great lengths to care for her and provided the best medical treatment, she still couldn’t save her.
At the time, Bai Weilan had devoted all her energy to her wife and her company. She didn’t pay much attention to Bai Juntang. She believed that as long as the child was fed, clothed, and had money, there wouldn’t be any problems.
After Bai Juntang’s mother passed away, an invisible gap began to form between her and Bai Weilan. It eventually became something they couldn’t cross.
Even though Bai Juntang was always respectful on the surface, Bai Weilan knew her daughter was a lot like her and wouldn’t easily follow her lead.
Luckily, Bai Juntang was smart and capable. With just a year or two of guidance, she had learned all the rules of the business world and ran Qian Gu very well. She even had time to explore new ventures, which truly made Bai Weilan feel proud.
That was why Bai Weilan had stayed overseas all these years. Partly, she wanted to avoid memories of her late wife. But more importantly, she had once promised to travel the world with her. Even though her wife was gone, she still wanted to keep her word.
Bai Juntang understood this, which was why she never questioned where Bai Weilan went or what she did. She simply focused on running the company and earning more money.
When Li Chen dropped Bai Juntang off at the hospital, he asked, “The Chairwoman is coming back tomorrow. Should I go pick her up?”
Bai Juntang thought for a second and replied, “No need. I’ll go myself.”
Li Chen nodded. After Bai Juntang got out of the car, he drove off quickly.
Watching him leave so fast, Bai Juntang sighed, hands in her pockets, and stood on the busy street outside the hospital entrance for a moment before turning to walk in.
There weren’t many people in the inpatient ward. She had arranged for Cheng Wan to have a private room, so it was especially quiet. As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she could already hear laughter coming from inside the room.
She followed the sound and saw that it was coming from Cheng Wan’s room.
She looked through the glass panel on the door and saw two or three people inside, though she couldn’t tell exactly who they were. Assuming they were friends visiting Cheng Wan, she knocked on the door before walking in.
“Oh, it’s Miss Bai!” Chang Le immediately brightened up when she saw her. A beautiful and gentle woman like her being her friend’s alpha was just too comforting to imagine.
Bai Juntang glanced around the room. Aside from Chang Le, there were a few unfamiliar faces. They were probably Cheng Wan’s coworkers. The only one she recognized was Chang Le.
Cheng Wan sat on the hospital bed. When she saw Bai Juntang walk in, her face lit up with a smile. “You’re back.”
“Yeah.” Bai Juntang didn’t want to interrupt her friends’ visit, so she said, “Where’s Aunt Pei? I need to speak with her about something.”
“Aunt Pei just stepped out to buy something,” Chang Le answered on her behalf.
Bai Juntang smiled and said, “I’ll give her a call. You all go on chatting.”
After she left the room, Chang Le grinned and said, “Miss Bai is still just as stunning and elegant. And she treats you so well. I’m honestly so jealous.”
Cheng Wan looked a little embarrassed. Almost everyone she knew praised Bai Juntang and said she was lucky to have found someone so good.
They weren’t wrong. Bai Juntang really was great. But hearing the same compliments over and over made Cheng Wan feel a little down. The more people admired Bai Juntang, the more she felt like she hadn’t achieved anything on her own.
Still, she knew Chang Le meant well. So she just smiled and asked, “Isn’t today a workday? How come you all had time to visit me?”
“We heard you had a baby girl, so we figured we’d come by to check in on you,” said Manager Zhou, placing a hand on Chang Le’s shoulder. She turned to Cheng Wan and asked, “I heard the baby came early. How is she doing now?”
“She’s still in the incubator. She has to grow to five pounds before she can come out, so we haven’t been able to see her yet.” Cheng Wan took out her phone. “But I did take some pictures.”
Chang Le had never seen a newborn before. When she looked at the photo, she blinked and didn’t know what to say.
Manager Zhou tapped her lightly on the head and laughed. “Newborns always look like that. All wrinkly, like little old men. She’ll look much better once she grows a bit.”
“Really?” Chang Le asked curiously. “She’ll look better later?”
Manager Zhou looked at the baby in the photo, little Suisui, and said, “This little girl has a high nose bridge and big eyes. Don’t worry about how red or purple she looks right now. She’s going to grow up with very fair skin.”
Cheng Wan’s eyes widened in surprise. “Really?”
She had secretly been worried her baby might look like a little roasted egg. But when she saw Manager Zhou nod seriously, she finally felt relieved.
See? Neither she nor Bai Juntang had dark skin. How could their baby turn out like that?
Manager Zhou added, “You and Miss Bai are both very good-looking. Your baby definitely won’t be anything less. Make sure she drinks plenty of milk. She’ll grow up to be tall too.”
Chang Le rested her chin in her hand and said playfully, “High nose, big eyes, fair skin, and long legs. She’s going to have so many alphas chasing after her when she grows up.”
Cheng Wan paused for a moment before saying, “That’s not important. As long as she grows up safe, happy, and doesn’t get into trouble, that’s good enough for me.”
“Hehe,” Chang Le giggled. “You sound just like a mom now. That’s totally a mom thing to say.”
Cheng Wan lightly tapped Chang Le on the head, letting her tease her, which made Manager Zhou laugh happily nearby.
After that, Chang Le and the others placed the gifts they had bought together by the bed and said their goodbyes. Before leaving, Chang Le mentioned they would come again for the baby’s one-month celebration.
Once everyone had left, Cheng Wan looked over the things Chang Le had brought. Most of them were baby items, along with some things for new mothers, like shampoo and body lotion. Everything was very practical.
Since she had already told Chang Le the baby was a little Omega, there was even a pink baby outfit with tiny cherry blossoms. It looked especially adorable.
As Cheng Wan was admiring the outfit, the door to the hospital room opened again.
She looked up and saw Bai Juntang walk in. Smiling, she said, “You’re here. They just left.”
“I saw them by the elevator,” Bai Juntang replied, walking over and glancing at the gifts. There was a good variety, and it was obvious that they weren’t just random items picked up from a baby store. They were all well-known brands and clearly selected with care.
Bai Juntang sat down by the bed and smiled as she looked at the little outfit in Cheng Wan’s hands. “This one’s really cute. Once we’re out of the hospital, we can dress Suisui in it.”
Cheng Wan had the same thought. Sitting on the bed, she sighed and looked at the tiny clothes. “I just don’t know when Suisui will be out of the incubator.”
She really wanted to hold her baby. Suisui was so small, so soft. She must be so warm and sweet to cuddle.
Bai Juntang gently patted her head like she was comforting a child. “She’ll be out soon. Don’t worry too much.”
Cheng Wan smiled and nodded, then began tidying up the gifts so they wouldn’t be cluttered.
Once everything was put away, Bai Juntang finally said, “My mom is coming back to the country tomorrow. I’m going to the airport to pick her up.”
Cheng Wan froze for a moment when she heard that.
She looked up at Bai Juntang and after a long pause asked, “Does your mom… know about Suisui being born prematurely?”
She didn’t really need to ask. Even though Bai Weilan had been living abroad, she always had access to information. There was no way she wouldn’t know about something as serious as Suisui being born early and hospitalized.
Bai Juntang was well aware of that too. Bai Weilan had even known when Cheng Wan got pregnant, so it was impossible that she didn’t know about the baby being born.
“It’s okay,” Bai Juntang said, sitting beside Cheng Wan and gently holding her hand. “She’s probably just worried about Suisui’s health. Her visa is about to expire, so she decided to come and visit. She’s not coming to give you a hard time. Don’t worry.”
Bai Juntang lowered her head and gave Cheng Wan a kiss on the lips. Seeing her cheeks turn a light shade of pink, she added, “But once you meet my mom, you’ll have to change what you call her.”
Cheng Wan blinked, confused. “Change it to what?”
Bai Juntang chuckled. “Call her ‘Mom,’ just like I do, silly.”
Cheng Wan pouted. Of course she knew she was supposed to call her that. Puffing out her cheeks, she glared at Bai Juntang. “You’re the silly one!”
Before she could say more, Bai Juntang kissed her again, turning her words into warmth between them.
The next day, Bai Juntang drove to the airport. She arrived a little after eight in the morning. Standing in front of the familiar terminal, her heart felt heavy.
She didn’t know exactly what she was worried about, but something about Bai Weilan’s sudden return made her feel uneasy.
After waiting for more than an hour, she finally saw Bai Weilan walking out, pushing a suitcase with her secretary and bodyguard following behind.
Bai Weilan always liked to travel with a full entourage. Returning to China was no exception. Many nearby travelers turned to stare at the impressive group.
As soon as Bai Juntang saw her, she went up to greet her. Bai Weilan was wearing a long white silk dress and a matching wide-brimmed hat. Her black and white high heels clicked sharply against the airport floor.
“You came,” Bai Weilan said as she walked up to Bai Juntang. She removed her sunglasses and said calmly, “It’s been over six months, and you’re still the same as always.”
