How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 81
Since the day she woke up, Cheng Wan had been resting in the hospital room.
By the next day, she was able to get out of bed, although her incision hurt terribly. She pushed through the pain just to see Sui Sui in the incubator, but the effort left her drenched in sweat. Bai Juntang didn’t let her leave the room again after that.
But Cheng Wan missed Sui Sui so much. She kept looking at the photos again and again. The doctors said that Sui Sui was still too small and needed to grow to at least five pounds before she could leave the incubator.
There wasn’t much Cheng Wan could do about that.
Aunt Pei had been making different kinds of nourishing soups for Cheng Wan every day. Partly to help her recover, and partly for another important reason.
“If you don’t drink more soup,” Aunt Pei said while serving it, “how are you going to feed Sui Sui when she comes out? You want her drinking formula milk?”
Cheng Wan took the soup with an embarrassed blush and drank it, even though she was starting to get tired of it.
She didn’t mind soup, but having it three times a day was too much. Chicken soup, fish soup, turtle soup—there was too much of it. And on top of the soup, she had to eat the meat too. It was becoming overwhelming.
Cheng Wan tilted her head back and gulped it all down before handing the bowl back to Aunt Pei.
Bai Juntang was sitting next to her the whole time. When she saw Cheng Wan gag slightly after finishing the soup, she got up and patted her back. Then she looked at Aunt Pei and said helplessly, “Does she really have to drink this much? Three times a day is too much.”
Aunt Pei sighed, clearly feeling bad for Cheng Wan too. “I know it’s hard, but there’s no other way. Sui Sui’s condition right now…”
Before she could finish, Cheng Wan’s body tensed slightly with sadness.
She had been blaming herself these past few days. After carrying the baby for nine months, if she had just been more careful, maybe she could have made it to full term. Then Sui Sui wouldn’t have to suffer like this.
The thought of her baby being taken to the incubator immediately after birth and not being able to stay with her made Cheng Wan feel even more down.
Bai Juntang gave Aunt Pei a look, signaling her not to say anything more.
After Aunt Pei left, Bai Juntang sat peeling an apple and spoke gently. “Try not to be too upset. The nurse told me today that Sui Sui is doing really well. She’s eating and sleeping fine. If she keeps this up, she’ll be out of the incubator soon.”
She looked at Cheng Wan and added, “Right now, your job is to get your strength back. Once you’ve recovered, we’ll bring Sui Sui home together.”
Cheng Wan looked at her, then took the small slice of apple Bai Juntang offered. Her heart felt a little lighter. “You’re right. As long as Sui Sui is safe, that’s all that matters. I just hope she grows stronger soon.”
She had heard that premature babies were more prone to illness. That made Cheng Wan worry even more. She told herself she would take care of Sui Sui no matter what and never let her suffer again.
Just thinking about her daughter filled Cheng Wan’s heart with warmth.
That was her baby. Even if she was an Omega and her future path would be more difficult, she was the child Cheng Wan had worked so hard to bring into this world. How could she not love her?
Every time she saw Sui Sui’s photos, she wanted to hold her close.
No matter how Sui Sui looked, she was her precious little one. Whether she stayed an Omega or turned out to be part of the rare three percent who differentiated differently, Cheng Wan would never abandon her.
And sometimes, when she thought about Sui Sui, Cheng Wan would suddenly think about herself too.
Why had her own birth mother abandoned her at the gates of an orphanage? Why hadn’t she ever come to visit? Was it really just because she had been born an Omega?
Cheng Wan had always believed that was the reason. In a society that deeply discriminated against Omegas, it wasn’t rare for parents to abandon their children for that reason.
But now, after giving birth to Sui Sui, her thoughts began to change. She put herself in her mother’s shoes and imagined being told that her baby was an Omega.
If someone asked her to give up Sui Sui because of that, she knew she could never do it.
Even if Bai Juntang didn’t want Sui Sui, she would still raise her.
Because that was her daughter. Her precious little girl.
Over the next few days, Cheng Wan’s condition improved steadily. Her abdominal pain still flared up occasionally, but it was much better than before.
Meanwhile, Sui Sui was growing quickly in the incubator. At first, she barely gained any weight, but in the last two days, her growth had picked up.
When Cheng Wan and Bai Juntang went to visit her, they saw her wide, shiny black eyes staring up at them. She looked happy to see her two moms.
Especially with Cheng Wan, the moment she spoke, the little one locked eyes with her and stared with complete focus.
Every time that happened, Cheng Wan felt pure joy. She couldn’t wait to finally hold Sui Sui in her arms.
That morning, Li Chen arrived to pick up Bai Juntang. He was driving her to the prison to visit someone she had personally helped put behind bars—her so-called father-in-law.
Bai Juntang didn’t tell Aunt Pei or Cheng Wan where she was really going. She just said she needed to handle something at the company and would be back soon.
Aunt Pei didn’t suspect anything. She nodded and told her to go ahead, promising to take good care of Cheng Wan.
Cheng Wan looked at Bai Juntang, her eyes full of unspoken thoughts. But she didn’t say anything. She only reminded her not to overwork and to come home early.
As they drove, Bai Juntang stared out the window. She noticed that some of the leaves were starting to turn yellow.
“Is it getting colder already?” she asked Li Chen.
Li Chen glanced at the trees outside, then nodded after listening to the GPS. “It seems so. They say a cold front is coming. The whole city will cool down in a few days.”
Bai Juntang murmured to herself, “So it’s cooling down…”
Li Chen didn’t know if he should respond, so he stayed quiet and kept driving.
They drove nearly two hours from the city hospital to the destination on the GPS.
After several levels of security checks and appointments, Bai Juntang finally saw Cheng Jiajian, now held in prison.
He was wearing a prison uniform and had a shaved head. At first glance, he looked completely different. It was hard to even recognize him.
“It’s really been a long time,” Cheng Jiajian said, looking her up and down. “You still look powerful and put-together. Not like me. Looks like I’ll be stuck here for the rest of my life, thanks to you.”
Bai Juntang gave a calm smile. “Try to see the bright side. At least this is better than running and hiding. Here you get food and shelter. Maybe you’ll live longer if you kick a few of your old habits.”
“Live longer?” Cheng Jiajian laughed coldly. “You’d love it if I suffered here a few more years, wouldn’t you?”
“That’s up to you to interpret,” Bai Juntang replied. “I only came to see you.”
She stared into his eyes and added, “And to let you know something. Wanwan gave birth to a daughter. But you’ll never get to see her.”
Cheng Jiajian didn’t seem surprised. Instead, he smiled calmly. “You came all this way just to tell me that?”
“That’s not the only reason I came,” Bai Juntang said as she crossed her legs. “I also wanted to tell you about your precious daughter.”
As soon as she mentioned that, Cheng Jiajian’s expression changed.
Although Cheng Qiaoqing was in high school, she was still a minor. According to the rules, her situation now was no different from that of an orphan, which meant she would be sent to a welfare institution.
However, before Cheng Jiajian was arrested, he had purchased an insurance policy for her and arranged for relatives to take care of her. He had no idea why Bai Juntang suddenly brought her up.
Noticing the shift in Cheng Jiajian’s expression, Bai Juntang seemed pleased. She tapped her fingers rhythmically on the table and said, “I’ve already investigated all your messy connections. That includes your direct family and your in-laws. I’ve figured it all out. It won’t be long before they’re all arrested and locked up with you. And since Qiaoqing is still a minor, and all her relatives will be in prison, what do you think her life will be like in a welfare center?”
Cheng Jiajian shot up from his seat and slammed the table. “Don’t you dare touch her!”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Bai Juntang remained calm, staring at the furious man in front of her. “You can’t even behave in prison. There’s nothing I can do about that. Once all your relatives are arrested and Qiaoqing is sent to the welfare center, she’ll be nothing more than a proud, arrogant kid dropped into a rough environment. You really think she’ll have an easy time?”
She continued in a calm voice, “She’ll lose her luxurious life. She’ll sleep in a shared dorm, no more private school, and she’ll carry the shame of being the daughter of convicted criminals. How do you think she’s going to get through her teenage years?”
“You… how can you do this to a child!” Cheng Jiajian’s eyes turned red with rage. His face was twisted with emotion. Just imagining his beloved daughter’s life being destroyed by this woman made him completely lose control.
If he weren’t behind bars, he might have tried to kill her.
Bai Juntang knew exactly what he was thinking, but her voice remained composed. “All the pain Cheng Wan suffered before—your entire family needs to experience it. That’s the only way this feels fair.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Cheng Jiajian lunged toward her in anger. The prison guards quickly restrained him.
Bai Juntang stood up and looked down at the fallen man in front of her. Her tone was cold but steady.
“Enjoy it. This pain, this regret—you’ll be feeling it for the rest of your life.”
When she walked out of the prison, Bai Juntang felt a little lighter.
Cheng Jiajian and his crooked relatives were now all behind bars. As for Cheng Qiaoqing, she would suffer some hardship in the welfare system. Everything was moving along just as she had planned.
Thankfully, the person who had pushed Cheng Wan hadn’t gone as far as they could have. Both Cheng Wan and Sui Sui were safe in the end.
Now, Bai Juntang felt like the weather was better than ever. Once Cheng Wan recovered, she planned to take her on a proper vacation. It was strange to think they had known each other for so long and yet had never gone on a real trip together. She had always kept Cheng Wan cooped up inside. It was starting to feel stifling.
Once Sui Sui was a bit easier to care for, Bai Juntang would leave her with a nanny and take Cheng Wan away for some fresh air and beautiful scenery. They deserved it.
As she sat in the car, Bai Juntang was even in a rare good mood. She started searching online for the best autumn travel spots. But before she could finish reading anything, her phone started ringing.
She looked at the caller ID and sighed in frustration before answering.
“Mom,” Bai Juntang said calmly. “It must be night over there. Why are you calling so suddenly?”
Bai Weilan’s voice came through the line as cool and collected as ever. “What, do I need to book an appointment before calling my own daughter?”
Bai Juntang didn’t respond.
“I heard that Cheng Wan gave birth early to a baby girl,” Bai Weilan said. “My visa is about to expire, so I booked a flight for tomorrow morning. Pick me up at the airport.”
