How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 83
Behind Bai Weilan, four or five bodyguards and assistants followed closely, surrounding their boss at a polite yet guarded distance.
Bai Juntang glanced at the group behind her and spoke slowly. “Mom, do you really need such a big entourage just to come back home?”
Hearing this, Bai Weilan turned around to glance at the people behind her before replying with a sigh, “You don’t understand how dangerous it is abroad, especially in countries where guns are legal. Having more people is just for safety.”
Bai Juntang didn’t bother arguing. She simply said, “But I only brought one car.”
“That’s fine,” Bai Weilan said casually. “I’ll ride with you. Xiaowei, my assistant, will come too. The others can take taxis on their own.”
The bodyguards straightened their backs, maintaining a stern and imposing presence.
Once in the car, Assistant Xiaowei took the driver’s seat while Bai Weilan and her daughter sat in the back. Neither of them said a word at first.
After leaving the airport expressway, Xiaowei asked, “Shall we head straight to the hospital?”
Bai Weilan nodded. “Let the others know to follow as well.”
Xiaowei nodded again and continued driving calmly.
Leaning back against the seat, Bai Juntang stared out the window, watching the scenery go by. After a while, she asked, “Why did you suddenly come back?”
Bai Weilan gave a soft laugh. “Couldn’t hold it in anymore?”
Bai Juntang’s expression darkened slightly.
“I thought you’d hold it in the whole ride,” Bai Weilan said with a half-smile as she crossed her legs and leaned into the soft seat. “What’s my granddaughter’s name?”
“Sui sui,” Bai Juntang answered. “We haven’t picked her formal name yet.”
“Sui sui Ping’an,” Bai Weilan murmured. “Peaceful and safe. That’s a lovely name.”
But then her tone changed.
“If only her peace was in name only.”
Bai Juntang knew what she meant and immediately explained, “What happened was an accident. She…”
“I don’t care if it was an accident,” Bai Weilan interrupted, glancing at her. “I want to see my granddaughter. We’ll talk more when we get to the hospital.”
For the rest of the hour-long ride, the two said nothing to each other. They sat in silence until the car finally entered the hospital parking lot.
As soon as they arrived, the cars following behind pulled in as well. The bodyguards stepped out and joined them again as they made their way in a large group into the inpatient department.
Bai Juntang, already used to the stares at the airport, once again endured the curious glances from onlookers. She looked helplessly at the tall, imposing bodyguards around her and still didn’t understand why her mother insisted on bringing so many people. Weren’t they hot?
They squeezed into the elevator together. After Bai Juntang pressed the floor button, she turned to her mother and said, “When you see Cheng Wan later, please don’t say anything too harsh. Sui sui being born early had nothing to do with her.”
Bai Weilan didn’t reply. She simply cast her daughter a sidelong glance and let out a long sigh.
She truly didn’t understand how her once sharp and capable daughter had ended up like this.
As they stepped out of the elevator, they immediately saw Aunt Pei waiting outside. Bai Juntang hadn’t told her what time they would arrive, so she had likely been waiting for a while.
“Madam, you’re back,” Aunt Pei greeted Bai Weilan with a warm smile. “Isn’t it hot outside? You must be tired from the flight.”
Bai Weilan, faced with Aunt Pei’s friendly chatter, finally smiled. Her expression softened completely, a stark contrast to earlier. “Not tired at all. I was just sitting the whole way. But you, Aunt Pei, we haven’t seen each other in over a year, have we?”
“That’s right. You didn’t come by last time you were here. I still don’t get why you stayed at a hotel when you’ve got a home right here. This time you must stay at the house. I’ve already prepared your room.”
Despite Aunt Pei’s enthusiasm, Bai Weilan shook her head and said, “I’ve already booked a hotel. I won’t be staying at the house this time.”
Both Bai Juntang and Aunt Pei were caught off guard.
“What do you mean by that?” Aunt Pei asked in confusion. “You’ve come all the way home and you’re still staying at a hotel?”
“It doesn’t mean anything,” Bai Weilan said calmly. “I just don’t really want to go back. Don’t worry, I’ve got everything arranged.”
Aunt Pei didn’t know what to say. She turned to look at Bai Juntang with a face full of questions.
Before Bai Juntang could respond, Bai Weilan asked, “Where’s Cheng Wan?”
“She’s in the room,” Aunt Pei replied. “She’s still weak, so we didn’t let her come out. Shall we go see her now?”
Bai Weilan nodded and followed her into the room.
As soon as the door opened, Bai Weilan saw Cheng Wan sitting nervously on the bed. She had gotten out of bed and was wearing pajamas and fuzzy slippers. The air conditioning was on to keep her cool, making the room feel calm and quiet, very different from the stuffy, late-summer heat outside.
Cheng Wan’s nerves kicked in again, especially when she saw the group of people crowding the door.
Fortunately, she quickly spotted Bai Juntang, who walked over and stood at her side.
Bai Weilan noticed how her daughter leaned close to Cheng Wan, whispering something that clearly helped Cheng Wan relax.
Bai Juntang held Cheng Wan’s hand and gently led her over. Cheng Wan glanced at the elegant, sharp-looking woman in front of her and softly greeted, “Mom.”
“Hmm,” Bai Weilan replied as she looked Cheng Wan up and down. She seemed to have gained a little weight, her skin looked much rosier and healthier than before. She was clearly in much better condition compared to the malnourished state she had been in previously.
It looked like Cheng Wan had been living well these past months.
Bai Weilan glanced around the hospital room. There was only a bed, a television, a cabinet, and a sofa. Nothing else. But the one person she wanted to see most wasn’t there.
“Where’s the baby?” she asked, looking at Cheng Wan. “I came to see Sui sui.”
Cheng Wan looked at Bai Juntang, then turned back to answer, “Sui sui is still in the incubator. The doctor said they need to observe her for a few more days before she can be brought out.”
Bai Weilan’s eyebrows furrowed slightly. She knew Sui sui was born prematurely and had been placed in an incubator, but it had already been a week since her birth. Why was she still there?
“A few more days? Is her health not stable yet?” Bai Weilan asked.
“She’s already much better,” Bai Juntang said. “The doctor just wants to be cautious. We’re not in a rush.”
Bai Weilan’s expression didn’t look good. Cheng Wan could feel her eyes on her, filled with silent judgment. That single glance made it clear that Bai Weilan blamed her for not carrying Sui sui to full term.
Cheng Wan didn’t understand why Bai Weilan was so hostile toward her. She even felt a little wronged. Sui sui was her daughter too. Of course she hadn’t wanted her baby to suffer like this.
But Cheng Wan didn’t say any of that. She quietly accepted that look without a word.
Bai Weilan said to them, “Let’s go take a look at the baby in the incubator. I came straight here from the airport. No matter what, I need to at least see her.”
Aunt Pei, who had been waiting nearby, quickly replied, “I’ll ask the nurse to make arrangements. Please wait here for a moment, Madam.”
About five minutes later, a nurse came to guide them to see the baby.
When they entered the room, Sui Sui was still sleeping peacefully inside the incubator. Her tiny fists were placed gently near her ears, and her chest rose and fell with every soft breath. She looked incredibly calm and sweet.
As Bai Weilan looked at the adorable little baby, her expression softened. She watched Sui Sui through the clear incubator wall, wanting to say something to her but unwilling to disturb her sleep. So she stood there quietly, simply gazing at her.
Although Cheng Wan came every day to see Sui Sui, she hadn’t yet had a chance today. Now standing behind Bai Weilan, watching her daughter like this, her heart filled with warmth and happiness.
The nurse nearby said, “She weighs five pounds and three ounces now. All her vitals are stable. If everything goes well, she can be taken out in two more days. Please start getting her things ready. If you have any questions, feel free to ask the medical staff.”
Bai Weilan nodded as she looked at the small identification tag around Sui Sui’s ankle. It showed her name, date of birth, and other details.
When she saw the 97% Omega differentiation rate, she suddenly said, “So she’s going to be an Omega.”
That one sentence made Cheng Wan tense up. She was standing behind Bai Weilan and couldn’t see her face, but everyone clearly heard those words.
Most people thought it was just a simple remark about Sui Sui’s potential gender identity. But Cheng Wan felt a sharp tug in her chest.
What was wrong with being an Omega?
Did that mean she would be treated like those people online who were criticized for not giving birth to an alpha?
Her face turned pale. She furrowed her brow slightly as she stared into the incubator at Sui Sui.
Sui Sui was so adorable. Surely Bai Weilan wouldn’t reject her just for being an Omega.
It was just a classification. The Bai family had more than enough wealth and power to raise her well.
Still, Cheng Wan couldn’t shake the unease in her heart. She was afraid that Bai Weilan, like her own mother, would abandon her child simply because of that.
Even though the orphanage she grew up in wasn’t full of bullies, it was still the place where her nightmares began.
Bai Juntang noticed something was wrong and gently pulled Cheng Wan into her arms. She whispered, “What’s the matter? You look really pale.”
Cheng Wan didn’t answer. She kept her eyes on Bai Weilan and Sui Sui in the incubator, then slowly shook her head.
After seeing the baby, Bai Weilan finally agreed to leave. She had taken several photos and was now sitting on the sofa in the hospital room, scrolling through them one by one. She occasionally zoomed in, admiring Sui Sui’s soft little face.
“This child looks a lot like Juntang when she was a baby,” Bai Weilan said thoughtfully. “Back then, you were just like this in your mother’s arms, always eating or sleeping…”
As she spoke, her expression changed slightly. Something clearly came to mind, and she didn’t finish the sentence.
“It’s lunchtime,” Aunt Pei said as she walked into the room. She asked, “Will you be eating here in the room, or should I order something from outside?”
“Let’s order a meal and have them deliver it,” Bai Juntang replied. “Cheng Wan is still recovering, so we’ll just have a packed lunch today. Sorry, Mom, for the simple arrangement.”
“It’s fine,” Bai Weilan replied. Then, turning her eyes to Cheng Wan, she added, “Juntang, could you step out for a bit? I’d like to speak to Miss Cheng alone.”
Cheng Wan was slightly stunned. Bai Juntang frowned, visibly displeased, and moved closer as if shielding her.
“We’re all family. If you have something to say, just say it in front of me.”
Aunt Pei, sensing the tension in the room, awkwardly excused herself to go place the food order.
Now only Bai Weilan, Cheng Wan, and Bai Juntang remained in the room.
“Well, since you don’t mind, I won’t hold back,” Bai Weilan said calmly. She took out a card from her pocket and placed it on the small coffee table in front of the sofa.
“This is the one hundred million yuan I promised you for giving birth to the child.”
