How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 80
Everything happened so fast. From the moment Bai Juntang received the phone call to the moment Cheng Wan fell down the escalator, it all took less than two seconds.
When Bai Juntang saw Cheng Wan fall, her mind went completely blank.
She could hear the screams of people around her and saw the bright red blood on the ground.
Bai Juntang rushed down as quickly as she could. A kind bystander had already pressed the emergency stop button. People gathered around, staring in shock at what had just happened.
Cheng Wan instinctively protected her belly as she fell. But even then, she couldn’t land safely.
Her light blue maternity dress was stained with blood. Pain surged through her abdomen, sharp and hot, spreading through her body and making her tremble.
“Cheng Wan!”
Bai Juntang dropped everything and ran over. She held Cheng Wan tightly in her arms, gently touching her pale, sweaty face. Her heart felt like it was breaking.
Cheng Wan had not lost consciousness. She clutched her belly and opened her eyes, pressing her head against Bai Juntang’s chest.
“Sui Sui…”
She could feel the pressure and waves of pain coming from her abdomen.
A deep fear began to take hold of her. Sui Sui was her baby, her only living relative. She felt the life inside her slipping away, as if it were slowly being pulled from her body.
She was terrified.
This was her child. She couldn’t lose Sui Sui.
The noise must have drawn attention, because hospital staff soon arrived.
“Please step aside,” one of them said urgently as several medical workers rushed to check Cheng Wan’s condition.
She had cuts and scrapes on her forehead, elbows, and knees, but those weren’t serious. The biggest concern was her baby.
A nurse quickly looked up and asked, “Are you the family member? It looks like she’s going into labor. How far along is she?”
Bai Juntang answered, her voice shaky, “She’s over nine months. Her due date is the fourteenth of next month.”
“Then this is a preterm labor. Please don’t worry. We’re taking her to emergency now.”
Just as she spoke, a stretcher arrived. The medical team lifted Cheng Wan and rushed her away.
From that point on, Bai Juntang felt completely useless.
For the first time in her life, she realized how powerless she was. All she could do was watch as Cheng Wan was taken into the operating room. She wasn’t even allowed to go with her.
Her clothes were still covered in Cheng Wan’s blood. Sitting outside the operating room, she could still feel Cheng Wan trembling in her arms.
Thankfully, she still had enough clarity to act.
She called the police. It was obvious that someone had planned this, waiting for the perfect moment to push Cheng Wan.
Then she called Li Chen, who was still on leave, and told him to investigate Cheng Jiajian and look deeper into the Cheng family’s hidden connections. Finally, she called Aunt Pei and asked her to bring clean clothes for both her and Cheng Wan.
Even after the calls, Bai Juntang’s hands were still shaking.
She stared at the hand that had let go of Cheng Wan’s just moments earlier. That one moment of distraction had changed everything.
Her hands were trembling badly, and her heart filled with regret.
Why had she let go? If she hadn’t, even if someone had pushed Cheng Wan, she could have caught her.
Why did she let go?
Regret and guilt consumed her. As she stared at the red light above the operating room door, the world around her seemed to lose all color.
Aunt Pei arrived in a panic and saw Bai Juntang sitting there, looking completely defeated. Blood stained her clothes. She looked like a mess.
“What happened?” Aunt Pei asked, her voice shaking. “How is Wanwan?”
A nurse nearby replied, “She’s still in surgery. It’s been about thirty minutes.”
Aunt Pei turned pale. She sat beside Bai Juntang, unsure of what to say.
The police arrived shortly after. Bai Juntang stepped aside to speak with them, leaving Aunt Pei alone to wait outside the operating room.
Since there was clear surveillance footage and the case was straightforward, the officers left quickly to arrest the suspect.
Just then, the doors to the operating room opened.
Bai Juntang immediately stood up and rushed forward. When she saw Cheng Wan on the hospital bed, pale and unconscious, her heart ached even more.
“Thankfully, both mother and baby are safe,” the doctor said as he approached them. “She delivered a baby girl weighing four pounds. The baby’s second gender differentiation shows a 97 percent likelihood of being Omega. She’s currently in the incubator and cannot be taken out yet. The mother is still unconscious and will need to be monitored. Please proceed with the hospital admission process.”
Aunt Pei quickly nodded. “I’ll take care of it.”
She turned to Bai Juntang, handed her a bag, and said softly, “Stay with Wanwan. These are your clean clothes.”
While Aunt Pei handled the paperwork, Bai Juntang followed the medical team and accompanied Cheng Wan to the hospital room.
Seeing Cheng Wan still unconscious in the hospital bed, Bai Juntang stood silently, unable to speak. Her expression was dark with worry.
Before the anesthesia took full effect, Cheng Wan had asked the surgeon, through clenched teeth, “Will the baby be, okay?”
The doctor had comforted her, saying it didn’t seem serious and urging her to hang on. Everything would be fine.
As the drugs kicked in, the pain slowly faded. Cheng Wan could vaguely feel her abdomen being opened, and something heavy being taken from inside.
Then, everything went black.
When she finally woke up, the sky outside the window had already darkened.
From her hospital bed, she could see the city lights glowing outside. It looked like evening, not yet deep into the night.
The hospital room was dim and quiet. It seemed like Cheng Wan was the only one there.
She still remembered being pushed from behind and falling down the escalator. After that, everything happened so fast. She was rushed into surgery almost immediately.
When she felt the pain in her abdomen and reached down to touch it, she realized her once large, round belly had flattened. Only then did she slowly come to the realization that she must have given birth.
Everything had happened so quickly. From the fall to the operating room, it probably took no more than fifteen minutes.
It had all been so sudden that even the memory of labor pain had faded.
Cheng Wan tried to sit up, but the pain was too sharp. After several attempts, she gave up and quietly lay back, waiting for someone to come.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when she heard voices outside the door.
“The police have already started the investigation. They’re sending people to arrest the suspect. It shouldn’t take long now.”
“Good. Thank you for helping. This needs to be handled quickly.”
Cheng Wan immediately recognized the second voice. It was Bai Juntang.
She looked toward the door, eyes full of hope, and waited.
Bai Juntang walked in. At first, she didn’t notice Cheng Wan was awake. She flipped on the light and froze when she saw her lying there, staring back.
In that moment, Bai Juntang’s heart clenched. She rushed to her side.
“You’re awake?” she asked softly, gently touching Cheng Wan’s cheek. She leaned down and kissed her forehead. Her voice trembled. “You really scared me today.”
Cheng Wan looked at her, surprised to see so much worry in her eyes. She had never seen Bai Juntang like this before. She must have been really frightened.
“I’m alright,” Cheng Wan said, reaching out and brushing her fingers against Bai Juntang’s hand. “I’m awake now, see?”
Bai Juntang pulled a chair close and sat down, still holding her hand. She let out a deep sigh of relief, as if she had finally set down a heavy burden.
Cheng Wan looked at her and asked, “What about Sui Sui? Was the baby born?”
“Yes,” Bai Juntang replied with a soft smile. “She’s a girl.”
Cheng Wan’s eyes lit up. She had always liked little girls. The name Sui Sui felt just right for a daughter. When she had first picked the name, she’d worried it might not suit a boy. Now she felt relieved and happy.
“What about her secondary gender?” Cheng Wan asked. “Is she an Alpha or a Beta?”
Bai Juntang’s voice lowered. “The test shows there’s a ninety-seven percent chance she’ll be an Omega.”
Cheng Wan’s heart skipped a beat.
A ninety-seven percent chance basically meant it was certain. Unless she fell into the rare three percent exception, her daughter would grow up as an Omega.
Cheng Wan looked down for a moment. Her expression dimmed, but she still smiled and said, “Omega is fine too.”
Omegas often faced unfair treatment in both education and society. But with Bai Juntang by her side, their daughter would be well cared for. Cheng Wan wasn’t worried about that.
Bai Juntang could see the thoughts in her eyes. She held her hand tighter and said gently, “Whether she’s an Alpha or an Omega, she’s our child. You don’t mind, and neither do I.”
Cheng Wan nodded and blinked a few times before asking, “Where is Sui Sui now? Didn’t she come out of the operating room with me?”
Bai Juntang paused for a moment before answering. “She was born early, so she’s in the hospital’s incubator right now. Aunt Pei came by earlier to bring us some things. She went home and will come back tomorrow.”
She reached out to touch Cheng Wan’s forehead, brushing back a few strands of hair. “You’ve been asleep for a long time. Are you hungry?”
Cheng Wan nodded slightly. She did feel a bit hungry. “Can I eat something?”
“I’m not sure. Let me ask the nurse.” Bai Juntang sat up, pulled out her phone, and opened her photo gallery. She found the two photos she had asked the nurse to take earlier and showed them to Cheng Wan. “Look, these are pictures of Sui Sui.”
Cheng Wan’s eyes lit up again. She took the phone from her and looked closely.
Inside the incubator was her tiny daughter. The baby’s skin still looked purple and wrinkled. To be honest, she didn’t look cute at all. In fact, she looked a little scary.
Still, as Cheng Wan looked at the newborn, she felt something warm and unfamiliar rising in her chest. This was the little one she had carried for so long and worked so hard to bring into the world.
From now on, she was a mother.
Bai Juntang watched her staring at the photo in silence, eyes wide with wonder. She leaned over and kissed the back of her hand.
“Rest a little longer. I’ll go find you something to eat.”
Cheng Wan looked up and nodded.
After Bai Juntang left the room, Cheng Wan continued staring at the picture of Sui Sui.
She smiled to herself and whispered, “So ugly.”
