How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 79
The two of them walked along the empty street for a long time. It wasn’t until after nine o’clock, when Aunt Pei called to urge them to come home, that Bai Juntang finally brought Cheng Wan back.
There weren’t many cars on the road at that hour, so Bai Juntang drove quickly and they arrived home in no time.
Cheng Wan, now heavily pregnant, had been out all afternoon and evening. She was completely exhausted. Even when Guazi came running over to greet her, she didn’t have the energy to pick him up. She simply changed her shoes and went straight to the bedroom to take a shower.
Seeing her dragging herself toward the bedroom, Aunt Pei turned to Bai Juntang and complained, “Look how tired Wanwan is. Pregnant women do need exercise, but they can’t be pushed like this. What did you two eat tonight? You remember she can’t have raw or cold seafood now, right?”
While changing her shoes, Bai Juntang answered helplessly, “I remember. We only had some regular dishes, nothing she shouldn’t eat.”
Aunt Pei added seriously, “And absolutely no ice cream, especially that soft-serve kind.”
Bai Juntang had heard these reminders so many times that she felt like her ears were growing calluses. She glanced at the clock and said, “It’s almost ten. Shouldn’t you be going to bed soon, Aunt Pei?”
“Go to bed?” Aunt Pei gave her a stern look, then glanced toward the bedroom where Cheng Wan was showering before turning back. “Your mother called earlier this evening.”
Bai Juntang was momentarily confused before remembering she did, in fact, have a mother who had been traveling overseas.
“Why did she suddenly call home?” she asked. “What was the reason?”
“She said she bought something for you,” Aunt Pei explained. “To be more precise, it was for Sui Sui.”
“For Sui Sui?”
“Yes. The due date is just about a month away. Madam said she bought some high-end baby products overseas. They’ve already cleared customs and are on the way here. She asked me to keep an eye out for the delivery.”
Bai Juntang sighed. “She’s only now remembering Sui Sui exists? It’s been over half a year.”
“Well, even if she bought them earlier, they wouldn’t have been used yet,” Aunt Pei reasoned.
“Fine,” Bai Juntang said. “If it’s just things being sent over, there’s nothing to worry about. Just store them somewhere when they arrive. We’ve got plenty of rooms here.”
“There might be many rooms, but not that many on the ground floor,” Aunt Pei pointed out. “Are you planning to put the nursery upstairs or downstairs? Right now, there’s no free room downstairs. Upstairs has more space, but once the baby starts running around, it could be dangerous. You’ve got two floors, plus a basement. That’s a lot of stairs for a little one.”
As Aunt Pei went on, Bai Juntang couldn’t help but feel a bit overwhelmed. She glanced around her large villa and asked, “Are you suggesting we move to a different house?”
“Why would we move? We’re living just fine here,” Aunt Pei replied, puzzled.
Bai Juntang grinned. “Well, you made it sound like this place is too small. Maybe we need something bigger and more spacious.”
Aunt Pei rolled her eyes and smacked her lightly. “I’m being serious. Have you decided where the nursery will go?”
There were plenty of rooms in the villa, but most of them were upstairs. When Cheng Wan first moved in, she was already pregnant and couldn’t be going up and down the stairs. So the only guest room on the ground floor had been given to her. Later, to help stabilize Cheng Wan’s pheromones in the final stage of pregnancy, Bai Juntang moved downstairs to accompany her.
With the dining room, living room, kitchen, study, Aunt Pei’s quarters, bathroom, and laundry room all on the first floor, there were simply no spare rooms left.
Bai Juntang thought about it. There really weren’t any extra rooms downstairs that could be turned into a nursery.
Still, the thought of a chubby little baby waddling around the house made her smile. She told Aunt Pei, “Just convert one of the upstairs rooms. We can install railings along the hallway and stairs in case the baby starts running around later.”
Besides, once the baby was born and Cheng Wan recovered, they could move back into the master bedroom upstairs. The guest room on the ground floor could then be converted into a child’s room.
After discussing it more with Aunt Pei, they decided to turn the sunroom on the second floor into the nursery. Even though they didn’t yet know the baby’s gender, it was best to prepare in advance.
Everything would be handed over to Aunt Pei to manage, with a firm deadline before the due date.
Though she sighed at the extra responsibility, Aunt Pei agreed quickly. She even started planning to plant flowers in the garden and install a slide. The third-floor balcony would need taller railings and a covered roof too.
It seemed like life would only get busier once the baby arrived.
After her shower, Cheng Wan came out and saw that Bai Juntang had already come into the room. Seeing her damp hair, Bai Juntang pulled her over to the chair, grabbed the hairdryer, and started drying her hair.
The warm air wasn’t exactly pleasant, and Cheng Wan let out a small whimper, but she didn’t resist. She closed her eyes and quietly let Bai Juntang take care of her.
The buzzing sound of the dryer filled the room. Bai Juntang glanced at her with her eyes closed and smiled. Her gaze slowly dropped to Cheng Wan’s belly, and she was reminded of the nursery Aunt Pei had just mentioned.
After finishing with her hair, Cheng Wan climbed into bed, pulled the blanket over herself, and let out a long sigh.
Bai Juntang sat at the edge of the bed, looking at her. She reached out to gently rub Cheng Wan’s freshly washed, soft cheek and said, “Aunt Pei mentioned that my mom called earlier. She said she’s sending over some baby supplies.”
Cheng Wan, holding her thin blanket, responded with a quiet “Oh.”
She didn’t have much of an impression of this “mother” figure, having only met her once. After more than six months, she could barely remember what the woman looked like—just a vague image of a slender figure, tall, with features that resembled Bai Juntang’s.
Seeing her subdued reaction, Bai Juntang continued, “I’m thinking about turning the sunroom on the second floor into a nursery. Once Sui Sui is born, that will be their room.”
Hearing that, Cheng Wan reached her hand out from under the blanket and held Bai Juntang’s fingers. “Why don’t we find out the gender at the next check-up? That way, we’ll know how to decorate the room.”
“It’s not that important,” Bai Juntang said with a smile. “We can always change it later. Aunt Pei suggested orange. It’s neutral enough for either a boy or a girl.”
“Wouldn’t that be inconvenient?”
“It’ll be fine,” Bai Juntang reassured her. “There’s only one month left until we open this surprise box. We’ve already made it through nine months. What’s one more? As long as you and Sui Sui are both healthy and safe, that’s all that matters.”
Cheng Wan gently placed her hand on her belly and nodded. “The doctor said Sui Sui passed all the checkups with flying colors. He’s probably a very healthy baby.”
Smiling softly, Bai Juntang leaned in and kissed her on the lips. “You’ve had a long day too. Get some rest. I’ll go take a shower.”
By the time Bai Juntang came out of the shower, Cheng Wan was already asleep in bed.
She must have been truly exhausted. Bai Juntang sat beside her quietly, watching her sleep. She let out a soft chuckle, then leaned down and gently kissed her lips.
To prepare for the arrival of the baby, Aunt Pei was doing everything she could. She called every one of her old friends, asked around for advice, and finally figured out how to decorate the nursery.
Next, she had to contact a renovation company. Since Aunt Pei wasn’t very familiar with that process and was getting older, Bai Juntang arranged for a secretary to help her, just to be safe.
The renovation wasn’t loud or complicated. It mainly involved furnishings and decorations, not major construction or appliances, so the house stayed quiet and comfortable.
Meanwhile, it was time for Cheng Wan’s next prenatal check-up. After making an appointment with Dr. Huang, Bai Juntang took her to the hospital.
Even though it was technically fall, the weather was still hot and stuffy. The sun was bright and harsh. Before leaving, Bai Juntang gave Cheng Wan a small hat to protect her from the sun.
This check-up was more detailed than the previous ones. It included an evaluation of the baby’s size to determine whether a natural birth or a C-section would be better.
Just hearing that made Cheng Wan nervous. Her face turned pale with worry.
Dr. Huang noticed and smiled kindly. “Don’t be scared. Every mother has to face this eventually. Worrying won’t help, so try to relax.”
Cheng Wan nodded, still tense, and gripped Bai Juntang’s hand tightly.
“From now on, you’ll come in once a week,” Dr. Huang explained. “The due date is four weeks away, but labor could start earlier or later. So far, everything looks good. The baby isn’t too big. We’ll check again closer to the due date to estimate the baby’s weight.”
Dr. Huang went on with more instructions: keeping pheromone levels stable, how to recognize signs of early labor, and what to do in emergencies. But all of it blurred together in Cheng Wan’s mind. She was too overwhelmed to absorb the details.
After collecting the new test results and papers, Bai Juntang walked out of the office with Cheng Wan.
Cheng Wan finally started to relax a little. She looked at the report in Bai Juntang’s hand and asked, “I didn’t catch much of what the doctor said. Did you remember it all?”
Bai Juntang smiled and nodded. “Yes, I remembered everything. Don’t worry.”
She held Cheng Wan’s hand as they walked toward the elevator. “I’ll be with you the whole time. Aunt Pei is always at home too. If anything happens, I can get you to the hospital right away. You don’t have to be scared.”
Even though Bai Juntang said that to comfort her, she wasn’t the one who had to give birth. It was easy for her to stay calm.
Cheng Wan couldn’t stop thinking about all the things she had read online. Some women said giving birth felt worse than dying. Just the thought of it made her break out in a cold sweat.
When they reached the elevator, the line was long and crowded. Cheng Wan suddenly caught a strange smell—something sour and unpleasant. She didn’t know who it was coming from, but it made her feel nauseous.
“Let’s take the escalator instead,” Cheng Wan whispered, tugging at Bai Juntang’s sleeve. “It’s too crowded in here.”
Bai Juntang glanced at the packed elevator line, then nodded and led Cheng Wan to the escalator nearby.
Since Cheng Wan’s belly was big and she couldn’t see her feet, Bai Juntang helped her carefully step onto the escalator. Once Cheng Wan was steady, Bai Juntang began organizing the documents and test results, tucking them into Cheng Wan’s prenatal care bag.
Just as she was doing that, her phone started ringing in her pocket. She let go of Cheng Wan’s hand for a moment and took out her phone.
It was an unfamiliar number. Bai Juntang didn’t feel like answering, but the call stopped quickly and was immediately followed by a text message.
“Look at the person next to you.”
She stared at the message, confused. The next moment, she noticed something move quickly in the corner of her vision.
Right then, Cheng Wan felt someone bump into her from behind. The escalator had just started moving, and she still couldn’t see where she was stepping. Suddenly, the ground beneath her seemed to disappear.
She lost her balance.
In a flash, Cheng Wan fell forward, tumbling down the moving escalator.
