How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 78
When Mu Ruchu greeted her, Chi Mu’s expression turned unpleasant. She held it in for a long time before finally responding with a stiff “Mm,” which barely counted as a greeting.
Bai Juntang was genuinely happy to see Mu Ruchu return. She patted the highlights in Mu Ruchu’s hair and said joyfully, “Come on, let’s take a look at your results.”
Chi Mu wasn’t sure why, but seeing Bai Juntang being physically affectionate with Mu Ruchu made her feel especially uncomfortable. Her gaze became colder and heavier.
The group then headed to the office to check the speed tracker and other performance metrics.
Even though Mu Ruchu had been away from the track for half a year, she hadn’t fallen behind by much. The team leader confidently said that with just one month, Mu Ruchu could be brought back to the level she was at six months ago.
However, Bai Juntang shook her head and said, “If the Omega racing ban is lifted next year, then we should aim to achieve even better results and show them what we can really do.”
The team leader nodded with a serious expression and replied, “Understood. I’ll make sure to train Mu properly and help her become the best racecar driver.”
Meanwhile, Mu Ruchu didn’t say a word. She simply listened quietly as everyone discussed her, looking distracted and not really engaged.
Originally, Bai Juntang had said she was taking Cheng Wan out for a fun outing. But once work matters came up, she had no time to care for her. Cheng Wan, being understanding, found a seat for herself and sat down. Chi Mu sat nearby, but emotionally, she felt a world apart.
Cheng Wan noticed that President Chi hadn’t spoken a single word since entering the room. Her eyes, whether intentionally or not, kept following Mu Ruchu.
It was clear that Chi Mu cared, but her expression looked as if Mu Ruchu owed her millions. Cheng Wan really couldn’t figure her out.
Inside the office, the various team leaders reported to Bai Juntang about recent work updates, the maintenance status of the vehicles stored there, brand endorsement deals, and equipment repair orders. Everything was shown to her for review.
Everyone believed that now that Mu Ruchu was back, the club would only get better. Once the Omega racing ban was lifted, the Qian Valley Racing Club would be among the top clubs in the world again.
Bai Juntang believed this too. She felt it was only a matter of time before the club returned to its peak.
Because of all the back and forth, what was supposed to be a quick visit ended up lasting two or three hours. By the time Bai Juntang wrapped up, it was already past five in the evening.
“At this hour, there’s traffic everywhere,” one of the team leads said warmly. “We’ve arranged a welcome dinner for Mu. Would President Bai and the two young ladies be willing to join us?”
Bai Juntang looked at Cheng Wan. Since it was a weekday and traffic was heavy, they would likely be stuck on the road for an hour or two. It made more sense to stay for dinner, especially to keep Cheng Wan and her baby from going hungry.
She walked over and asked, “What do you think?”
“I’m fine with anything,” Cheng Wan replied with a smile. She didn’t want to ruin the mood.
Bai Juntang then looked toward Chi Mu and asked, “What about you, Miss Chi?”
Mu Ruchu also turned to Chi Mu, silently inviting her with her gaze.
Chi Mu hesitated before reluctantly saying, “Alright, I’ll stay.”
Across the street from the club was a small commercial area. Most of the stores weren’t doing well. There were some sports gear shops and a few small restaurants, mainly noodle and stir-fry places. Only one place stood out, a large semi-outdoor barbecue restaurant, which looked to be the most decent option nearby.
Bai Juntang didn’t mind these kinds of places. She could enjoy five-star cuisine or eat at a tiny diner. However, since she was with Cheng Wan this time, she was more careful. For Cheng Wan’s health, she felt it was important to choose somewhere clean and safe.
Mu Ruchu and the other staff members were not picky. The only one who seemed uncomfortable was Chi Mu.
Chi Mu had grown up overseas in a large villa, eating gourmet meals. Her household had six or seven staff members, and she was taken care of in every possible way. Even after returning to China, she never compromised on her lifestyle. Her driver and assistant handled everything with care.
So when Chi Mu saw the semi-open barbecue restaurant, her expression turned even darker.
Almost no one noticed her reaction as the server led them into a private room.
As the host, Bai Juntang naturally ordered the dishes first. She quickly chose a few stir-fried plates, ordered half a roasted lamb and some skewers, and, since they had to drive, asked for soft drinks instead of alcohol.
Cheng Wan, who found it inconvenient to move around, stayed in a corner seat. Bai Juntang sat next to her and quietly held her hand under the table.
“Is the air conditioning too strong? Are you feeling hot?” Bai Juntang asked gently.
Cheng Wan held her hand and shook her head. “No, I feel fine.”
The weather wasn’t hot that day, so the restaurant’s air conditioning wasn’t too strong. Bai Juntang could tell Cheng Wan wasn’t running a fever, so she smiled and said, “Give Aunt Pei a call and tell her we won’t be home for dinner, so she doesn’t cook.”
“I already called her. I did it on the way here,” Cheng Wan said.
Bai Juntang couldn’t help pinching her cheek and said with a smile, “So smart.”
Watching the two of them being affectionate as if no one else was around, everyone else at the table smiled awkwardly and focused on their menus.
In their minds, Bai Juntang had always been a cool and distant person, a workaholic who lived for racing. That was why she founded the racing club in the first place.
Now, seeing her bring a pregnant Omega to such a public setting left everyone puzzled and curious. How had this gentle-looking Omega managed to win over Bai Juntang’s heart and make their usually serious boss smile so sweetly?
It felt like the world had turned upside down.
“President Bai,” one of the team leads said during a quiet moment as dishes were being served, “aren’t you going to introduce the boss’s wife? We’ve never met this young lady before. How did you two meet?”
Even though Bai Juntang was the boss, the club didn’t operate under strict hierarchies. Everyone enjoyed racing together, and there was a strong sense of camaraderie, so light teasing was normal.
Bai Juntang didn’t mind. Holding Cheng Wan’s hand, she smiled and said, “How we met isn’t important. What matters is that this is how it is now, and it’s going to stay this way.”
As soon as she said that, the entire table burst into cheerful laughter.
Cheng Wan looked at Bai Juntang with a trace of discomfort. She knew why Bai Juntang didn’t want to talk about how they met. Honestly, Cheng Wan didn’t want to relive those memories either.
Over the past six months, their relationship had become very harmonious. Cheng Wan didn’t want to spoil the atmosphere, so she sat quietly beside Bai Juntang without saying a word.
The only person at the table who still seemed completely out of place, other than Cheng Wan, was Chi Mu.
Chi Mu’s first thought was that these people were completely lacking in manners. Her second thought was that this place felt anything but clean. She even started to question whether the bench she was sitting on had been properly disinfected.
Chi Mu had severe obsessive-compulsive cleanliness. She was already planning to throw away the clothes she was wearing once she got home. Who knew how many germs they had picked up in a place like this?
The food started arriving one dish after another, and surprisingly, it smelled quite appetizing.
But why were so many of the plates and bowls chipped?
It was obvious they had been used many times. Even with cracks, the restaurant still hadn’t thrown them away. Just thinking about how many people’s saliva had touched those plates, and how many times they’d probably been dropped on the ground, made Chi Mu extremely uncomfortable. She shifted in her seat and pushed her chair back slightly, clearly unwilling to touch anything on the table.
She couldn’t understand what she was doing here in the first place. How did she end up coming along with this group? It made no sense at all.
With her arms crossed, Chi Mu sat among the group of racecar drivers and felt completely out of place. She was just starting to consider making up an excuse to go to the bathroom and slip away when she noticed Mu Ruchu, who was sitting beside her, picking up the kettle and pouring a cup of hot water. Without a word, Mu Ruchu used the hot water to rinse and sanitize all of Chi Mu’s utensils.
“This place isn’t fancy,” Mu Ruchu said while looking at her. “If you’re not comfortable, President Chi, I can let them know and have someone take you home.”
Chi Mu looked at her, and her expression finally softened a little. Her tone was still grumpy, but she said, “You’re the guest of honor tonight. How could you be the one to take me home? Besides, I’m not that picky. Who hasn’t eaten at a street stall before?”
The others continued to enjoy the meal with laughter and chatter. It was a warm and lively welcome dinner. Still, Bai Juntang remained considerate of Cheng Wan, knowing her body wasn’t in the best condition, so she left early with her before it got too late.
At night, the racing club grounds were quite dim, lit only by a few streetlights. Even though the commercial street was just across the road, the light from over there didn’t quite reach this side.
It was the end of summer, but the night had turned unexpectedly chilly. The wind in the open suburbs was strong, tousling both of their hair.
“Are you cold?” Bai Juntang asked softly as she tightened her grip on Cheng Wan’s hand. “If you’re not, do you want to take a walk nearby?”
Cheng Wan didn’t feel cold at all. Her body was naturally warm, and with a little one growing inside her, she felt like she was carrying a built-in heater.
“Let’s walk for a bit,” Cheng Wan said as she rubbed her belly. “I feel a bit too full. Walking should help with digestion.”
That was exactly what Bai Juntang had in mind. She led Cheng Wan around the surrounding area near the venue.
Their shadows stretched long under the streetlights. Bai Juntang, clearly in a good mood, began to point out the buildings around them, explaining which belonged to the Qian Valley Club and which plots were planned for residential development. Cheng Wan didn’t really understand much of what she was hearing, but seeing Bai Juntang so happy, she simply listened quietly without interrupting.
After talking non-stop for over ten minutes, Bai Juntang finally noticed Cheng Wan hadn’t said a single word. She paused, turned to her, and asked, “Am I being boring?”
Cheng Wan shook her head and looked at her. “I just don’t understand much about it, but I’m not bored.”
The truth was, Cheng Wan didn’t really get what Bai Juntang was talking about. But she could tell how happy she was, and that was enough to make her feel happy too.
A gust of wind swept by and played with their hair.
Under the soft glow of the streetlight, Bai Juntang looked at Cheng Wan, reached out, and gently touched her face. Her voice was low as she said, “Cheng Wan, I know you’ve felt how unfair this world can be.”
Cheng Wan’s eyes dimmed slightly, and she nodded quietly.
Bai Juntang continued, “I might not have the power to change the world, but at the very least, as long as I’m around, I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
She gently lifted Cheng Wan’s chin and, right there on the wide, quiet street, lowered her head and kissed her lips.
As long as Cheng Wan was by her side, she would make sure she was safe.
