How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 75
Chi Mu’s sudden appearance surprised everyone in the room. Aunt Pei didn’t dare open the door immediately, especially since the woman outside looked visibly upset.
Bai Juntang had never had much patience for this woman. She glanced at Mu Ruchu and put down her bowl. “She’s here for you.”
Mu Ruchu sighed. She had planned to finish dinner and have a proper conversation with Bai Juntang about returning to the club. But now it looked like that would have to wait.
She stood up and said to Bai Juntang and Cheng Wan, “I won’t bother you any longer.”
But Bai Juntang calmly asked, “Didn’t you come to talk to me about going back to the club? This actually involves your boss too. She keeps holding you back, which makes things harder for me. Maybe it’s time the three of us sat down and discussed it.”
Before Mu Ruchu could react, Bai Juntang was already walking toward the door. She opened it and looked at the woman standing there.
The moment Chi Mu saw Bai Juntang, she recalled how Mu Ruchu had once described her as having shoulders wide enough to shield a heart. Even though she didn’t particularly like Bai Juntang, she had to admit she was quite striking. Her tone softened slightly.
“Hello,” Chi Mu said. “Is my driver in your house?”
Bai Juntang gave her a wry look and asked, “Miss, does your driver not have a name?”
Chi Mu pressed her lips together, clearly a bit annoyed. “Is Mu Ruchu here? Tell her to come out. There’s no one at home to cook.”
“Miss Chi,” Bai Juntang said as she stepped slightly aside, revealing Mu Ruchu sitting at the dining table, “we’re in the middle of dinner. Adding another pair of chopsticks is no trouble at all. Why don’t you join us?”
She looked at her calmly. “I actually have something I want to discuss with you.”
Chi Mu was clearly surprised by the invitation. Although they had met a few times, they had never really interacted, professionally or personally. She couldn’t guess what Bai Juntang wanted to talk about.
Even as she sat at the table, her expression remained puzzled.
Aunt Pei brought over a new set of utensils and placed them in front of Chi Mu, kindly asking, “Would you like some soup?”
Chi Mu shook her head. “I’m not really a soup person, but thank you.”
Bai Juntang turned to Aunt Pei and said, “Go ahead and eat. I’ll talk with them.”
Although Aunt Pei thought it was bad manners to talk business at the table, she didn’t argue. Once she left, only four people remained at the table.
Chi Mu sat next to Mu Ruchu, occasionally casting uncomfortable glances at Cheng Wan, who was quietly eating across from her. Her discomfort was obvious.
Mu Ruchu noticed it too. She followed Chi Mu’s gaze and frowned slightly.
She tugged at Chi Mu’s sleeve and leaned in, whispering, “I know you don’t like Omegas, but could you not make it so obvious? This isn’t your home.”
Over the past few weeks, Mu Ruchu had sensed Chi Mu’s clear discomfort around Omegas. Whether at work or in daily life, Chi Mu avoided them like a disease and wouldn’t even touch them if she didn’t have to.
Mu Ruchu knew some Alphas looked down on Omegas, seeing them as nothing more than tools for reproduction, unworthy of respect or autonomy.
She hadn’t expected someone like that to be this close to her.
It was also the reason she had never revealed her true identity to Chi Mu. She had seen enough of those cold and judgmental looks. She didn’t want to see them coming from Chi Mu too.
Chi Mu furrowed her brows and whispered, “When have I ever said I dislike Omegas?”
Mu Ruchu looked her in the eyes but said nothing. Instinctively, she shifted slightly away.
Bai Juntang also noticed Chi Mu’s glances, but didn’t seem angry. While serving Cheng Wan some food, she casually said, “I heard Miss Chi just returned from overseas. Your Mandarin is quite good.”
Chi Mu blinked, looked at Bai Juntang, and replied, “Yours is good too.”
Bai Juntang raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”
What was that supposed to mean?
Mu Ruchu immediately realized Chi Mu had remembered something from the ridiculous story she once made up. She rubbed her forehead, unable to believe Chi Mu still took that nonsense about the ‘Reaper Society’ seriously. It had been so long, and Chi Mu still hadn’t questioned it.
It was honestly unbelievable.
Even though Bai Juntang had no idea what Chi Mu meant by that remark, she said calmly, “Miss Chi, I assume you know Ruchu used to work for me. I’d like her to return. What’s your opinion?”
Chi Mu hesitated. She didn’t think very highly of this so-called ‘Reaper Society’ and disliked the thought of Mu Ruchu running around in danger. Every time she imagined Mu Ruchu weaving through bullets, she felt uneasy. Keeping her close felt safer.
“To be honest, Miss Bai, I don’t think working for you is a good idea,” Chi Mu said seriously. “Your line of work is too dangerous.”
Bai Juntang assumed she meant racing and was slightly impressed. She hadn’t expected someone like Chi Mu, who always seemed arrogant and cold, to show concern for someone else.
“Danger is part of any job,” Bai Juntang replied. “But the sense of achievement that comes with this one is hard to replace.”
“Even so, I still think no accomplishment is worth risking your life,” Chi Mu said. “You don’t seem like someone who acts recklessly, do you?”
Bai Juntang laughed softly. “That sounds a bit biased. How do you know I’m not reckless? After all, who doesn’t enjoy a bit of adrenaline?”
The two Alphas exchanged words across the table, sharp and direct. Cheng Wan couldn’t follow the conversation at all. She simply sat there, quietly eating, her eyes wide and sparkling like a kitten’s.
Mu Ruchu buried her face in her hands. She couldn’t understand how this bizarre cross-channel conversation between the two women was going so smoothly.
As the conversation heated up, Mu Ruchu finally put down her hand and interrupted, “Enough, both of you. I’ve already made my decision.”
She looked at Chi Mu and said firmly, “President Chi, I’ve been hiding a lot from you. I’ll explain everything when we get back. But today, I want you to know that I’ve decided, I’m going back.”
This had always been her dream. She didn’t want to leave quietly, with her head down.
Bai Juntang, looking satisfied, smiled and placed another piece of braised eggplant onto Cheng Wan’s plate.
Chi Mu frowned deeply. “You already left that place. Why go back? It’s dangerous—even if you’re an Alpha, it’s not worth it.”
Mu Ruchu opened her mouth but still couldn’t bring herself to say that she was an Omega.
She didn’t even know what exactly she was afraid of. Maybe it was because she had been hiding it for so long and now didn’t have the courage to tell the truth.
The atmosphere at the table became incredibly awkward. Cheng Wan looked at the serious expressions on Mu Ruchu and Chi Mu’s faces. With the air so tense, how was anyone supposed to eat?
Cheng Wan exchanged a glance with Bai Juntang. Then, gathering her courage, she picked up a piece of braised pork and placed it into Mu Ruchu’s bowl.
“No need to get worked up. Aunt Pei’s cooking is always great. You should both try it.”
As she pulled her hand back, her stomach accidentally bumped the table, causing her to stumble. She nearly lost her balance. Bai Juntang, startled, immediately reached out to steady her. But even with that, Cheng Wan still accidentally brushed against Chi Mu.
That one touch sent Chi Mu springing to her feet. She took several steps back in alarm, her expression dark.
“Did you… just touch me?” Chi Mu looked visibly shaken as she grabbed her wrist and rolled up her sleeve to inspect it.
Bai Juntang grew furious. She wrapped an arm around Cheng Wan and snapped, “So what if she touched you? Do you have to overreact like that?”
Mu Ruchu looked flustered and tried to explain quickly, “Juntang, don’t be angry. President Chi really doesn’t like being touched by Omegas.”
Bai Juntang’s brows furrowed. “What, is she planning to bring her discrimination into my house?”
Chi Mu was clearly startled. “What are you all talking about? I avoid Omega contact because I’m allergic, not because I discriminate. When have I ever said anything like that?”
Everyone fell silent for a second.
“President Chi,” Mu Ruchu said awkwardly, “Omegas aren’t an allergen. You can’t be allergic to a person’s gender. Please don’t make things up.”
Chi Mu glared at them. Neither Mu Ruchu nor Bai Juntang looked convinced. Their expressions made her feel even more insulted.
“I am allergic to Omegas. I’ve had this condition since I was a child. Is that something I would lie about?” Chi Mu was fuming. To prove her point, she strode up to Cheng Wan, grabbed her wrist, and held it.
Cheng Wan peeked over from behind Bai Juntang’s shoulder, blinking curiously.
Bai Juntang was about to erupt. She couldn’t believe Chi Mu had just grabbed Cheng Wan. But before she could say anything, she saw small red spots rapidly appear on Chi Mu’s wrist.
The redness spread quickly. It wasn’t just her arm; a rash had also started to show on her neck.
Chi Mu let go of Cheng Wan’s wrist and, as if showing off a badge of honor, spun in place and said with pride, “See for yourselves. I told you I’m allergic to Omegas. Now hurry up and take me to the hospital.”
She had arrived confident and self-assured, and even though she left covered in hives, she still managed to maintain her composure and elegance as she and Mu Ruchu walked out of Bai Juntang’s home.
In the end, barely any food on the table had been eaten.
As Aunt Pei cleared the table, she sighed in frustration. She thought it was such a waste. Four people hadn’t even finished a single dish.
Around nine in the evening, Bai Juntang called Mu Ruchu to confirm the training schedule for her return to the club. She also asked how Chi Mu was doing at the hospital.
After hearing that Chi Mu was fine, she finally went to rest.
It wasn’t even that late. Aunt Pei hadn’t gone to bed yet, so of course, neither had Cheng Wan.
Still, a lot had happened that day. From confronting Cheng Jiajian to Mu Ruchu agreeing to return to the club, it felt like things were finally moving forward in the right direction.
Cheng Wan sat on the bed, surrounded by the soft glow of a dim lamp. The light reached only the headboard, casting a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
“What are you doing?” Bai Juntang climbed into bed from the other side, lifted the blanket, and snuggled over. Wrapping her arms around Cheng Wan, she asked as she noticed the earphones, “Listening to music?”
Cheng Wan looked up, her face slightly red, and whispered, “I was… listening to a prenatal education course.”
