How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 74
Even after Bai Juntang had taken Cheng Jiajian away, Cheng Wan still couldn’t figure out what he meant by his final words.
Bai Juntang watched the police car drive off before turning to Li Chen.
“Did you find out who tipped him off? In his situation, there’s no way he could have gotten a phone card on his own, or known that Cheng Wan was trying to cut ties.”
“We traced the number,” Li Chen replied. “But the person registered to it didn’t even know the card was active. We still haven’t figured out who helped him.”
“Don’t let your guard down. Look into Cheng Jiajian’s old contacts—especially any relatives from the Cheng family.”
“Understood, President Bai.”
Everything had gone more smoothly than expected, but even so, Bai Juntang had spent nearly the entire afternoon dealing with it. When Cheng Wan woke from her nap and didn’t see her, she asked Aunt Pei where she’d gone. Aunt Pei only said she had gone out, but wasn’t sure why.
Cheng Wan sat on the sofa, a soft pillow behind her back and a fluffy coral blanket draped over her knees.
Guazi, their chubby cat, loved Cheng Wan. The moment she sat down to rest or watch TV, it would run over and curl up beside her.
Just like now—Guazi had its fluffy head resting on Cheng Wan’s thigh, its whole body tucked into the corner of the couch. Its neck was short, so its head was tilted back as it looked up at her, but even that didn’t stop it from wanting to snuggle close.
Its big, round eyes blinked at her as it let out a soft whimper.
“Meow…”
Cheng Wan looked down at it and gently picked it up, adjusting its position on her lap so it could rest more comfortably.
But the cat was so warm. Even with the air conditioner running, Cheng Wan still felt hot. When she touched Guazi’s furry little body, her hand came away sticky with sweat and full of shed fur.
She sighed and grabbed a wet wipe to clean her hand.
Just then, the doorbell rang. Cheng Wan turned her head automatically.
Was it Bai Juntang?
She waited eagerly.
Aunt Pei heard the doorbell too and went over to check the video screen. After a quick glance, she said with surprise, “Oh! Xiao Mu!”
She opened the door and smiled at the visitor. “What brings you here today? Come in, come in. It’s scorching out there—you’ll melt standing outside!”
Mu Ruchu stepped inside, carrying a bag of fruit in one hand and drinks in the other. She looked like she was visiting family.
“My boss gave me some things. I couldn’t finish it all myself, so I thought I’d bring it over. There are more people here—it’ll be easier to share.”
“You’re too polite,” Aunt Pei said warmly. “What’s in the bags?”
She didn’t act formal with Mu Ruchu. After all, she’d seen the girl many times while working in Bai Juntang’s house. When she heard that Mu and her boss had moved in next door, she had been quite happy.
“Why don’t you stay for dinner?” Aunt Pei smiled. “I’ll make something nice.”
She took the bags to the kitchen, leaving Mu Ruchu in the living room. The moment she turned away, Mu Ruchu looked over and waved at Cheng Wan.
Cheng Wan was a little disappointed that it wasn’t Bai Juntang, but she didn’t show it—she didn’t want to seem rude. She nodded and said politely, “Miss Mu, have a seat.”
Mu Ruchu changed into indoor slippers and came over without hesitation.
Guazi, who had been napping in Cheng Wan’s lap, immediately became alert at the sound of a stranger’s voice. When it saw someone unfamiliar approaching, it backed away with a cautious shuffle.
Mu Ruchu paused and looked at the cat. “Wow, it’s gotten so big.”
Cheng Wan blinked. Stroking Guazi’s head, she asked, “You mean Guazi?”
“That’s its name?” Mu Ruchu smiled. “It’s a cute name.”
Hearing her cat praised, Cheng Wan looked a little pleased—it was her who named it, after all. Complimenting Guazi felt like complimenting her too.
Mu Ruchu glanced at Cheng Wan’s round belly and asked, “Is Juntang not home today?”
“She went out for something,” Cheng Wan replied. “Are you here to see her? I can give her a call and ask when she’ll be back.”
“No need,” Mu Ruchu said with a soft laugh. “She mentioned she wanted me to return to the club. I thought I’d give her an answer today, but since she’s not here, I’ll come back another time.”
As she was getting ready to leave, Cheng Wan stopped her.
“You’re thinking of racing again?”
Mu Ruchu froze slightly and turned to look at her. After a moment, she asked, “She told you?”
Cheng Wan looked a bit embarrassed. Bai Juntang had mentioned it to her in private, and she wasn’t sure how Mu Ruchu felt about that. So she offered a quick apology.
“I’m sorry,” she said quietly. “I noticed you seemed like an Omega, so I asked Juntang. She didn’t mean to tell me—it was just me being curious. But I promise, I haven’t told anyone else. I’ll keep it a secret.”
Mu Ruchu smiled at that. “It’s not a big deal. At first, I just wanted to experience what it was like to be seen as an Alpha. I wanted to understand why Alphas look down on Omegas so much. But looking back, I was just being naive. Changing my label didn’t change who I was. I’ll never really be an Alpha.”
Back when she was banned from racing, it had crushed her. She couldn’t understand how gender could matter so much.
She had made it to the world’s top ten despite the side effects of suppression meds. She was so close to becoming the first Omega world champion. But because of some outdated, unfair rules, she had been pushed out.
She just wanted to know—did Alphas really have the power to decide an Omega’s worth?
Looking back now, she realized it had all been driven by frustration.
Cheng Wan could see the pain in her expression and offered gently, “I don’t know much about your racing world, but I don’t think gender is something we get to choose. What matters is not giving up on yourself.”
Mu Ruchu stared at her quietly, not saying a word.
Cheng Wan thought she had said something wrong and instinctively wanted to apologize, but then she saw Mu Ruchu smile.
“You’re right,” Mu Ruchu nodded. “No matter what, I can’t give up on myself. I’ve made up my mind. I want to go back and try again. At the very least, I owe that much to the people who spoke up for me.”
She still had fans and friends who believed in her. She couldn’t just walk away from that.
The two of them ended up talking for quite a while. Aunt Pei truly wanted Mu Ruchu to stay for dinner. She even came over several times to ask what kinds of dishes she liked, and in the end, Mu Ruchu couldn’t refuse and agreed to stay.
Bai Juntang got home right around dinner time. Aunt Pei had just called to ask when she would return, but before Bai Juntang could answer, she walked through the front door.
Compared to the heat outside, the cool air inside the house was a huge relief.
Li Chen had dropped her off and left immediately. He worked hard, but he wasn’t the type to hover around his boss all day. Once he finished his tasks, he disappeared faster than anyone.
Mu Ruchu was already seated at the dining table. When Bai Juntang walked in and saw her, she paused slightly.
“Hi,” Mu Ruchu said with a smile. “You don’t mind me joining you for dinner, do you?”
Bai Juntang didn’t react much and replied calmly, “You’re already sitting here. Would it matter if I did?”
She walked over and glanced at the dishes on the table. Several were clearly Mu Ruchu’s favorites, and the rest were ones Cheng Wan liked.
Whether Bai Juntang liked them or not no longer seemed important.
Aunt Pei placed a bowl of soup on the table and, as she ladled soup for Cheng Wan, asked Bai Juntang, “Do you want to shower first or eat? Are you heading out again tonight?”
“I’m not going out,” Bai Juntang replied. She pulled out a chair and sat down. “Can you get me a bowl too?”
“No rush,” Aunt Pei smiled. “There’s plenty for everyone.”
Once everything was set, Bai Juntang looked over at Cheng Wan and reached out to gently rub her cheek.
Cheng Wan had become used to this kind of casual affection. At first, she didn’t react, but when she noticed Mu Ruchu watching them, she suddenly realized how intimate it looked.
She quickly pushed Bai Juntang’s hand away, her ears turning red. “We’re eating. What are you doing?”
Bai Juntang said softly, “You feel a little cooler now. Is your appetite better?”
Cheng Wan rubbed her face. She wasn’t sure if her temperature had dropped, but she did feel hungrier. She nodded.
Seeing her respond, Bai Juntang finally smiled. She turned to Mu Ruchu and said, “You should stop by more often. Cheng Wan hasn’t had much appetite lately, but now that you’re here, she’s eating again.”
Mu Ruchu rolled her eyes and picked up her chopsticks. “Only if I have time.”
“What’s so great about that old car of yours anyway? You act like quitting your job would be the end of the world.”
“It’s not that,” Mu Ruchu replied. “My boss treats me fairly well. And she’s hard to deal with. Not many people can handle being both her driver and her assistant.”
“That’s her problem,” Bai Juntang muttered. She was still annoyed whenever that woman’s name came up. “You’re a professional racer, not her chauffeur. You used to only take orders from me.”
While she spoke, she was picking out Cheng Wan’s favorite dishes and placing them on a small plate. She also spooned soup over her rice.
Cheng Wan loved tomato and egg soup. When it was mixed with rice, she ate more. She didn’t care much for meat, but she loved oily braised eggplant. Tonight, both dishes were on the table, and Bai Juntang had taken full charge of serving her.
Mu Ruchu didn’t even eat. She rested her chin in one hand and watched Bai Juntang moving back and forth like a doting partner. She leaned over and whispered things like, “Want more soup?” or “You should eat some meat too,” and even, “You finally have an appetite. Want me to feed you?”
Cheng Wan’s face turned bright red. She wanted to serve herself, but Bai Juntang moved so fast she didn’t get the chance.
Mu Ruchu just kept watching with a smirk. If the timing had been better, she would have pulled out her phone and recorded everything to show Bai Juntang years later.
She wanted to show her just how ridiculously attentive she had been.
As the three of them sat around the table, eating and talking, the doorbell suddenly rang.
Aunt Pei immediately walked over to answer it. When Mu Ruchu got up to help, Aunt Pei waved her off and went herself.
She checked the video screen and saw a woman standing outside in a business suit. Her brows were furrowed, and she didn’t look happy. As soon as she spoke, her tone was sharp.
“Is my driver in your house?”
