How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 66
By July, summer was in full swing. Even early in the morning, the heat felt like stepping into a steamer. The sun hadn’t risen very high yet, but it was already baking everything in sight.
Cheng Wan had become increasingly sensitive to heat. After walking just a few steps outside, her forehead was covered in sweat. Bai Juntang quickly helped her into the car to rest and cool down while she stayed outside to make a phone call.
About five minutes later, Cheng Wan saw Mu Ruchu walk through the side gate and into the courtyard.
Bai Juntang glanced at her. Even though it was a scorching summer day, Mu Ruchu was still dressed in long sleeves and pants. She stuck to her usual black, white, and grey color scheme. Just looking at her was tiring to the eyes.
Bai Juntang didn’t comment. They were heading to a popular bakery today and had decided to bring Mu Ruchu along.
“Miss Mu,” Cheng Wan greeted her softly.
The night before, Bai Juntang had already told her that Mu Ruchu would be coming too. She knew the way and, more importantly, Bai Juntang had something to talk to her about, so it made sense for her to come along.
Cheng Wan didn’t mind, but she wasn’t very comfortable around people she didn’t know well. After saying hello, she quietly sat in the backseat without saying another word.
This time, Bai Juntang didn’t drive. She sat next to Cheng Wan in the back while Mu Ruchu sighed and got into the driver’s seat without needing to be asked.
As the car started moving, Cheng Wan tugged on Bai Juntang’s sleeve and whispered, “Is it okay to have your friend drive?”
Bai Juntang leaned close and whispered with a smile, “There’s no one better behind the wheel than her.”
From the front, Mu Ruchu let out a sigh. “I can hear you,” she said while steering the car.
Cheng Wan’s face turned slightly red, but Bai Juntang just laughed and gently patted her head before telling Mu Ruchu to focus on driving.
Since it wasn’t a workday, the roads weren’t too busy. But the bakery was far, and between stoplights and a bit of traffic, it still took nearly an hour to get there.
“It’s really far,” Cheng Wan said, resting her head against the car window as she looked out at the shopping district.
It was ten o’clock, just as the mall was opening. Mu Ruchu found a parking spot and led them inside.
“My boss found this place by accident,” she explained as she walked in front. “She’s super picky, but everything here passed her taste test. The bakery’s just inside. There shouldn’t be too many people yet.”
Cheng Wan walked slowly, so Bai Juntang held her hand and kept pace with her.
It had been a while since Cheng Wan had gone out. Her eyes lit up as she looked around at the familiar storefronts.
They were in an upscale shopping area, filled with high-end brands that Cheng Wan had only heard of before. Seeing their large logos hanging from buildings made everything feel exciting and new.
Bai Juntang had brought a sun umbrella with her. She opened it and held it over Cheng Wan’s head to shield her from the strong sunlight.
Looking up at the umbrella, Cheng Wan asked curiously, “Did this come as a gift with something you bought?”
“Yeah,” Bai Juntang said, giving her palm a light squeeze. “It seems to be good quality. Nothing too flashy, and perfect for today.”
Cheng Wan nodded and continued walking slowly. As they turned a corner, she finally saw the bakery.
It wasn’t that the storefront was especially big, but even though the mall had just opened, there was already a long line outside the shop. It was hard to miss.
Mu Ruchu had gone ahead and was talking with someone near the bakery. When Cheng Wan looked closely, she was surprised—it was Li Chen.
“That’s Assistant Li,” Cheng Wan said, turning to Bai Juntang. “Is he here to buy something too?”
Bai Juntang gave her a glance, smiled slightly, and didn’t say anything.
As the two of them walked over slowly, Li Chen and Mu Ruchu turned to greet them.
“President Bai,” Li Chen said, pulling a folder from his backpack. “The boss is inside waiting to discuss the contract. Everything’s ready.”
“Contract?” Cheng Wan looked puzzled. “What contract?”
“It’s a business acquisition, Miss Cheng,” Li Chen replied cheerfully. “The owner of this bakery is a divorced Omega. The shop has been open for about a year and is doing quite well. I spoke with the owner yesterday, and we agreed to meet today with the draft contract to go over the details.”
Cheng Wan stood there for a moment, still trying to process what she had just heard.
Just then, the bakery door opened from the inside.
A little girl, around seven or eight years old, pushed open the glass door with some effort. Her hair was tied into two pigtails, and she looked up at them and said sweetly, “Hi, big brother and sister. My mom is waiting for you inside. It’s really hot out here—come in quickly.”
Li Chen smiled and gently patted her head. “Such a polite little one. Did your mom teach you to say that?”
The girl glanced up at the four adults, and her gaze quickly landed on Cheng Wan’s baby bump. She immediately ran over, grabbed Cheng Wan’s hand, and said gently, “Are you tired from standing, big sister? Let’s go inside, okay?”
Seeing how warm and thoughtful the girl was, Bai Juntang nodded and said to the others, “Let’s go in.”
Led by the little girl, Cheng Wan stepped into the bakery. The shop wasn’t very big—about twenty square meters. There was just one table for customers to sit at, a long display counter, and an open kitchen in the back.
There were still a few customers in line. When they saw the group being led into the kitchen by the little girl, they all turned to look.
Just as they entered the kitchen, a woman wearing a white chef’s uniform walked over. She looked young at first glance, but up close, you could see the faint lines at the corners of her eyes. She was likely in her late thirties or early forties.
“Xiaoxue,” the woman called gently.
The little girl let go of Cheng Wan’s hand and ran into her arms, calling sweetly, “Mom!”
The woman hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, then set her down and said, “I need to talk to these guests for a bit. Why don’t you go upstairs and do your homework?”
The girl nodded sensibly and left without making a fuss.
The woman then turned to the group and smiled warmly. “Sorry for the rush. I’m the owner of this bakery. Assistant Li contacted me earlier. All the pastries are ready.”
In the center of the kitchen, a long aluminum table was filled with cakes and desserts. The variety was impressive—it was clear they had been specially prepared for this visit.
Later, Cheng Wan learned that Li Chen had coordinated everything in advance.
This little bakery had done well. The owner, a gentle Omega woman, had opened it after her divorce. Left to raise her daughter alone, she found it difficult to get hired—most companies were unwilling to employ an Omega in her situation. So, she sold her house and started this business to survive.
In the beginning, she didn’t expect to make much money. She just wanted to make ends meet. She crafted every cake and dessert by hand, with care and quality ingredients. Her desserts were flavorful, comforting, and quickly gained popularity.
As word spread, the shop got busier. Even after hiring staff to help, the owner still worked from morning to night, trying to keep up.
“I never meant for this to become some trendy spot,” the owner said, sitting across from Bai Juntang. “I feel bad when people line up and still can’t buy what they want.”
She continued sincerely, “So when Assistant Li suggested opening a second location, I was tempted. But I don’t know anything about running multiple stores, and I don’t have anyone to help me. It’s overwhelming. If your team can really take care of that part, I’d love to move forward.”
It was her dream to share her pastries with more people.
Bai Juntang sat quietly, tasting a fresh black-tea-flavored peach pastry. She wasn’t someone who liked sweets much, and usually, she didn’t get involved in small franchise projects like this.
But Cheng Wan liked it.
Ever since Mu Ruchu brought back a bag of pastries, Cheng Wan had been sneaking bites almost daily. Sometimes, she even got up at night just to eat one. How could Bai Juntang not take it seriously?
The pastry had a delicate crunch, and the flavor of black tea was subtle but present. It paired well with the buttery texture. Bai Juntang had to admit—it was delicious.
“Ms. Feng, your pastries are very impressive,” Bai Juntang said as she finished her snack, wiped her hands with a tissue, and handed over a document. “This is a preliminary agreement. My team will handle the business details. The first new location will open at a site I’ve selected. Is that okay with you?”
Feng Gu took the folder. She didn’t need to read much—most of the terms had already been discussed. She would train the bakers, while Bai Juntang’s side would handle the investment and operations. She would also receive an annual franchise fee of 500,000 yuan. If the business did well, they could expand further.
They continued discussing some additional ideas. Bai Juntang hoped to not only open a local store near home but also set up an online order and delivery system.
While business outside continued, the contract discussions were nearly finished.
Bai Juntang’s offer was honest and generous, and Feng Gu had no reason to say no. From here, Li Chen would handle the rest—he would work with Gangu’s investment team to make sure the new shop opened smoothly, with full delivery service included.
Before they left, Feng Gu packed up two large bags of cakes, bread, and traditional pastries for Cheng Wan. They filled the backseat of the car.
Mu Ruchu had other errands to run, so she didn’t go back with them.
Cheng Wan sat in the car hugging her bags of pastries like precious treasures. She smiled, took a few pictures, and sent them to Chang Le to share the happy news.
After the initial excitement wore off, Cheng Wan turned to look at Bai Juntang, who was focused on the road.
Bai Juntang was driving with one hand, resting her head on the other, watching the slow-moving traffic. Noticing Cheng Wan’s gaze, she turned and asked, “Finished talking with Chang Le?”
“Yeah, we’re done.” Cheng Wan looked at her, still holding the pastries in her arms. After hesitating for a moment, she asked something she’d been curious about for a while.
She looked Bai Juntang in the eyes and asked quietly, “Mu Ruchu… she’s actually an Omega, isn’t she?”
