How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 64
Chang Le had never seen Mu Ruchu before. She stared blankly at the woman standing in front of her, immediately thinking to herself that this woman was one incredibly cool and handsome-looking alpha.
“You’re looking for Miss Bai?” Chang Le blinked and asked, “Who are you?”
Mu Ruchu lifted the small bag in her hand with a friendly smile and said, “I live next door. I just bought some sweets and thought I’d bring them over to Juntang.”
At that moment, Cheng Wan walked over. The moment she saw Mu Ruchu, she felt a strange sense of familiarity, as if she had seen her somewhere before. But for a moment, she couldn’t remember exactly where.
Then, when Mu Ruchu looked up and their eyes met, Cheng Wan suddenly recalled where she had seen her before.
“Hi there,” Mu Ruchu greeted her with a relaxed tone. “I brought some desserts—buns, little cakes, and things like that. Not sure if you’ll like them.”
Only then did Cheng Wan notice the small bag in her hand, filled with sweet-smelling bread and pastries. The scent of cream and freshly baked dough was already drifting through the air, making the whole entryway smell warm and sweet.
The three of them stood there, exchanging glances at the doorway, and it started to feel a little awkward. Cheng Wan was about to invite her in, but Chang Le stood firmly in the way.
Of course, she wouldn’t let a stranger walk into the house. With Miss Bai out, the only ones inside were a pregnant Omega and a beta. No way would Chang Le allow a stranger alpha inside, especially one that looked tough and intimidating. Without hesitation, she stepped forward and blocked the door.
“Miss Bai stepped out for a bit. She’ll probably be back soon,” Chang Le said politely but firmly. “Maybe you could come by later. Since we’re neighbors, that should be easy, right?”
Mu Ruchu glanced at the petite girl in front of her, then looked up at Cheng Wan. She could guess what they were worried about and didn’t seem offended.
“I’ll just leave these here as a little neighborly gift,” she said with a soft smile, placing the dessert bag in Chang Le’s hands. “I won’t keep you any longer.”
After watching her walk away, Chang Le looked down at the bag and felt slightly proud of herself. When she opened it, her eyes widened.
“These are from that trendy dessert shop! Everything’s so pretty, and they smell amazing.”
She closed the door, set the desserts carefully on the coffee table, and began unpacking them one by one.
“Do you know how hard it is to get these? I’ve waited two weeks in line and still couldn’t buy them, and she just shows up with a whole bag.”
The rich scent of butter and sugar filled the room, and Cheng Wan couldn’t help but feel a little hungry.
She suddenly remembered meeting that woman once at a photo studio. Now it made sense—Mu Ruchu had asked if Bai Juntang was home right away, so she clearly knew her. That must’ve been why she’d randomly started a conversation that day.
While Cheng Wan was still lost in thought, she saw Chang Le open a box of egg tarts and take a small bite like a taste tester. After making sure it was good, she passed a fresh one to Cheng Wan.
“This egg tart is amazing—so warm, creamy, and sweet. I finally get to try one.” Chang Le’s eyes sparkled with joy. “No wonder people line up every day. It’s totally worth it.”
Cheng Wan didn’t say anything, but she finished the tart in just a few bites.
The soft, buttery crust and rich custard filling made it one of the best egg tarts she’d ever had. She didn’t dislike sweets—she just rarely got the chance to eat something this good.
By the time Bai Juntang came back, the two of them had already eaten four egg tarts. The other desserts remained untouched. Chang Le left a few out on the table and put the rest in the fridge.
Besides lunch, Bai Juntang came home carrying a large brown envelope. She set it casually on a nearby shelf.
While helping unpack the food, Chang Le told her about the woman who had dropped off the desserts.
“Oh?” Bai Juntang replied casually. “Yeah, she’s the new neighbor. We haven’t had a chance to properly introduce ourselves yet. She used to work for me. We got along well.”
Chang Le was surprised. “Your employees can afford villas now?”
Bai Juntang chuckled. “She left the company a while ago. Now she’s working as a driver for the owner of the villa next door. I guess she suddenly thought of me and decided to bring something over.”
Then she added, “I’ll call her later to thank her. But for now, let’s eat.”
The three of them had lunch together. After a little while, Chang Le left. She still had work in the afternoon and didn’t want to take up more of their time.
Cheng Wan sat quietly on the sofa, staring at the maternity leave documents in her hand. Starting today, she wouldn’t need to work for the next eighteen months.
The thought of such a long break made her understand why some companies were hesitant to hire Omegas. It wasn’t surprising anymore.
“What are you thinking about?” Bai Juntang came over with a glass of water and sat beside her, popping a peach pastry into her mouth.
Cheng Wan looked at her and pushed the contract toward her. “Did you approve this?”
Bai Juntang glanced at it and smiled. “It’s a standard benefit for employees. Besides, with your condition, I wouldn’t want you going back to work right now. You should listen to the doctor and rest.”
“But a year and a half feels so long. I don’t think I can stay home that long.”
“It’s not that long. You might end up thinking it’s not enough.”
Bai Juntang picked up the maternity leave form and handed Cheng Wan the brown envelope she had set aside earlier.
“Take a look at this.”
The envelope felt warm on her lap. Cheng Wan didn’t open it right away. She looked at Bai Juntang and asked, “What is it?”
“Open it and see for yourself.”
Bai Juntang didn’t explain. She just gestured for her to read it.
As soon as she had gone out earlier, Bai Juntang had received a call from Li Chen. He told her that the documents for ending Cheng Wan’s guardianship relationship had been finalized. The evidence was solid, and even the housekeeper who used to work for the Cheng family had agreed to help. She had worked there for years and knew the family’s situation well.
The lawyer had prepared everything and passed it to Li Chen, who immediately called Bai Juntang to inform her.
While waiting for lunch at the restaurant, Bai Juntang was also waiting for Li Chen to deliver a set of documents. She flipped through them quickly once they arrived—and was immediately satisfied.
What Cheng Wan now held in her hands were the official documents to sever all ties with the Cheng family.
Although they weren’t the final court-issued documents yet, Bai Juntang was confident they would win. That’s why she had brought them directly to Cheng Wan.
She quietly watched as Cheng Wan’s expression changed—from confusion to shock, then to helplessness. Bai Juntang felt her heart tighten at the sight.
She moved closer and wrapped her arms gently around Cheng Wan.
“What is this?” Cheng Wan looked up, startled, her voice soft. “Where did you get this?”
Bai Juntang didn’t answer directly. Instead, she held her close and spoke in a calm, gentle voice.
“I know what you’ve been through with the Cheng family. Pain isn’t just about being hit or yelled at. Sometimes it’s being ignored, being used. I’ve seen it all.”
Cheng Wan trembled slightly. It took her a moment before she lowered her gaze.
Holding her hand gently, Bai Juntang said, “As long as you sign this petition, you’ll be free. You’ll no longer have anything to do with them.”
She continued, “I’ll take care of submitting it to the court. From then on, the Cheng family will no longer be part of your life. I’ll take care of you. We can build a real home together—you, me, and Sui Sui.”
Cheng Wan blinked. “Together… you and me?”
Bai Juntang nodded and leaned in to place a soft kiss on the corner of her lips. “Just the three of us. No more stress, no more pain. You won’t have to worry about them ever again.”
Cheng Wan leaned into her embrace. She didn’t know how to describe what she was feeling.
Cutting ties with the Cheng family was something she had always wanted. But ending an adoption was more complicated than forming one. The laws were designed to encourage adoption but made it very difficult to exit. Even though she was an adult, she couldn’t legally free herself from them on her own.
She didn’t know when Bai Juntang had started preparing all of this. But the few pieces of paper in her hands suddenly felt heavy with meaning.
If she submitted this lawsuit, she would really be cutting off her past. She would have no more ties to the Cheng family.
She would finally be truly independent. No more having to endure Cheng Jiajian’s coldness or Xu He’s bitterness.
Bai Juntang could feel her hesitation. No matter how they had treated her, the Cheng family had still been her legal guardians for many years. Bai Juntang understood that and was willing to give her time.
“If you’re not ready, we can wait,” she said gently, noticing how pale Cheng Wan looked. “But the Cheng family has already gone bankrupt. Your adoptive parents are probably hiding from debt collectors. If we miss this chance, it might be much harder to take legal action later.”
Cheng Wan froze. She looked down at the papers in her hand again, then nodded slowly.
“I’ll sign,” she said, looking up at Bai Juntang. “I want to say goodbye to the past.”
The painful memories, the constant rejection—those were things Cheng Wan knew she would never fully forget. She also knew that if Cheng Jiajian could sell her out once, he could do it again.
Bai Juntang was right. With the Cheng family in this situation, now was the best time to act.
Cheng Wan picked up the pen, but her hand started trembling uncontrollably. She couldn’t even begin writing her name.
Bai Juntang quietly watched, then reached out and placed her hand gently over Cheng Wan’s.
“Are you scared?” she asked softly.
Yes. Cheng Wan was afraid.
Signing the papers was easy, but what came after? Once she signed, she would truly be alone. No more family. No more parents. That thought made her hesitate.
It was a huge decision. One she couldn’t take back.
But as Bai Juntang’s warm hand wrapped around hers, she felt something stir deep inside—like a small voice whispering, you won’t be alone anymore.
Maybe this time, she could have real family. Not the kind that only took advantage of her, but people who truly loved and cared for her.
And Bai Juntang was one of those people.
Seeing the hesitation and fear in Cheng Wan’s eyes, Bai Juntang gently pulled her into a hug. She held her hand tightly and said in a quiet voice, “Don’t be afraid. I’ll stay by your side—always.”
Always?
Cheng Wan closed her eyes for a moment. When she opened them again, her hesitation was gone.
She gave Bai Juntang a soft smile. “Okay. I’ll sign.”
As her pen finally moved across the page, writing her name, she felt a quiet sense of relief.
With that signature, she had finally ended the first twenty-something years of her life.
Maybe now… she could finally live for herself.
