How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 63
During the days Aunt Pei was on leave, she called home often. She always felt that Bai Juntang wasn’t the best at taking care of others, and with Cheng Wan being heavily pregnant, it wasn’t easy for her to move around. So every couple of days, she would make a video call, worrying about everything.
But in reality, Bai Juntang took excellent care of Cheng Wan. After all, they were both adults. Cooking, doing laundry, and handling house chores weren’t exactly difficult for them.
Even if Bai Juntang didn’t know how to do something, they could always hire a housekeeper.
So during that time, Bai Juntang was responsible for taking care of Cheng Wan and their cat, Guazi. All Cheng Wan needed to do was look after herself.
That morning, Aunt Pei made another video call to Bai Juntang early in the day. Coincidentally, Bai Juntang had been planning to ask her how to use the robot vacuum. With such a large house, if she had to mop the floors every day, she wouldn’t have time to do anything else.
“That robot is so dumb. It’ll never clean as well as a person,” Aunt Pei complained, but she also understood that the situation was special. Bai Juntang still had to go to work, and Cheng Wan couldn’t do any chores. So she patiently explained step-by-step how to use that silly little robot.
At that moment, Cheng Wan was sitting on the sofa in the living room, frowning at a walnut in her hand.
Aunt Pei had told her to eat ten walnuts and a pack of mixed nuts every day, but Cheng Wan couldn’t find the small hammer used to crack them. When she saw Bai Juntang talking to Aunt Pei, she walked over with two walnuts in hand.
Bai Juntang had been crouching in front of the vacuum, adjusting it. She looked up and saw Cheng Wan walking over. She immediately set the phone down and pulled Cheng Wan into her arms.
“The floor’s slippery. Didn’t I tell you to stay on the sofa?”
“I just wanted to eat some walnuts, but I couldn’t find the hammer. I thought I’d ask Aunt Pei where she left it before she left.”
“It’s just walnuts. I’ll handle it. If we really can’t find the hammer, we can just use the door to crack them.”
At that moment, Aunt Pei’s camera was pointed at the ceiling. She couldn’t see what they were doing, but she heard Bai Juntang’s comment about using the door. She immediately shouted, “You absolutely cannot use the door! Your bedroom door cost tens of thousands. If it breaks, you’ll have to pay to fix it!”
She had only been gone a few days, yet these two little lovebirds were already getting carried away at home.
Aunt Pei sighed heavily. First, she taught Bai Juntang how to use the vacuum robot. Then, she helped Cheng Wan find the small hammer.
Bai Juntang watched Cheng Wan crack and eat walnuts. She looked at Aunt Pei through the video call and asked, “Aunt Pei, when are you coming back?”
Aunt Pei thought Bai Juntang was missing her and felt deeply moved. “You’re so thoughtful, Juntang. No wonder your mother trusted me to look after you all these years. I should be finished soon, maybe in three to five days.”
Bai Juntang glanced at Cheng Wan and said, “There’s no need to hurry back.”
Aunt Pei was surprised. “What?”
Bai Juntang said calmly, “You should stay another week or two and take care of everything properly before coming back.”
Aunt Pei went silent.
After the call ended, Bai Juntang walked over, took the small hammer from Cheng Wan’s hands, and began cracking the walnuts for her.
Cheng Wan sat on the sofa, watching as Bai Juntang cracked the walnuts with quick and precise movements. She popped a small piece into her mouth and asked, “When is Aunt Pei coming back?”
Without stopping, Bai Juntang replied, “She’ll be busy for another week or two.”
“That long?”
“What’s wrong?”
Bai Juntang paused and looked at her. “You don’t want to be alone with me?”
Cheng Wan blinked. How did she get that idea? She just thought Aunt Pei’s cooking was better.
“No,” Cheng Wan quickly said. “I was just asking.”
Bai Juntang didn’t comment and went back to cracking the walnuts.
Cheng Wan stayed quietly on the sofa and watched her finish cracking all ten walnuts before placing the small hammer back into the drawer under the coffee table.
“After you finish the walnuts, eat some mixed nuts too,” Bai Juntang said. “What do you want for lunch?”
Cheng Wan thought for a moment and said, “I want that teriyaki chicken rice from the shop near the entrance.”
Bai Juntang nodded, gently rubbed her head, and said, “I’ll go get it in a bit.”
As they were talking, Cheng Wan’s phone rang. She picked it up and saw it was a call from Chang Le.
Ever since that last heat cycle, when Bai Juntang had taken her home, she and Chang Le hadn’t really kept in touch. Why was Chang Le suddenly calling?
Could it be something work-related?
Cheng Wan quickly answered the call.
“Wanwan,” Chang Le’s voice sounded cheerful. “I’m bringing something over to you. Are you staying at your place or at Miss Bai’s? Send me your location.”
Cheng Wan paused for a second. “Why are you suddenly coming over?”
“Hehe, it’s work stuff. Don’t worry, it’s all good news. I’m free this afternoon, so I figured I’d drop it off. Just send me the location, and I’ll grab a taxi.”
Chang Le’s usual whirlwind energy left Cheng Wan a bit puzzled. She glanced at Bai Juntang. It probably wasn’t a big deal. Maybe it really was just work.
After sending the location to Chang Le, she got a cute emoji in reply, along with a shiny flying kiss. It was totally her style.
Since Bai Juntang’s home was close to the office, it didn’t take more than twenty minutes for Chang Le to arrive. Bai Juntang was the one who opened the door.
“Wow, this is your place?” Chang Le followed her inside, looking around at the spacious villa and large living room. She said with envy, “Rich people really do live differently.”
Bai Juntang handed her a pair of slippers and asked calmly, “Want something to drink? Is soda water okay?”
“Sure,” Chang Le replied with a bright smile. She and Bai Juntang got along well. “Thanks, Miss Bai.”
Truthfully, Bai Juntang didn’t mind girls like Chang Le. She was cheerful, easy to get along with, and most importantly, a beta—completely non-threatening. So she didn’t mind her being close with Cheng Wan.
“I’m going out to get some lunch later. Why don’t you stay and eat with us?” Bai Juntang asked. “Do you have any food preferences or allergies?”
“Don’t treat me like a guest, Miss Bai. I’ll eat whatever you’re eating. Even plain rice with chili sauce sounds great.” Chang Le laughed as she walked into the house. When she saw Cheng Wan sitting on the sofa looking at her, her eyes lit up and she rushed over happily.
“Wanwan!”
It was rare to see Chang Le so enthusiastic, but it made sense. Cheng Wan had been resting at home for nearly two weeks, including a week of bed rest. Of course Chang Le was happy to see her again.
“How are you feeling? Are you getting better?” Chang Le held Cheng Wan’s hand and said with concern, “You really scared me that day. If you hadn’t told me to call Miss Bai, I wouldn’t have known what to do.”
Although Chang Le usually seemed quiet, once she started talking, she barely stopped. Cheng Wan smiled faintly and waited for her to finish before saying, “Thank you for that day. I really didn’t know what I would’ve done without your help.”
Chang Le grinned, showing her little canine tooth. “So I’m basically a hero saving the day, right? You already thanked me, don’t be so formal.”
The two chatted for a while before Chang Le pulled a few items from her bag and placed them on her lap. She leaned in close, looking excited. “I brought you something good.”
Cheng Wan looked curiously and saw a few documents and a magazine.
“This is the issue we just finished with the magazine company. Our company partnered with them, and it’s finally printed.” Chang Le flipped to the last page and pointed at the staff credits. “Look, your name is listed under layout and design. Everyone said your design was great. They barely changed anything when it was reviewed.”
Cheng Wan’s eyes lit up. Normally, she only handled small tasks or assisted others. It was the first time her name had appeared in a published piece.
Chang Le handed her the magazine and said happily, “Everyone at the office agrees that you have a great eye for design. Once you return from maternity leave, they’re thinking about transferring you to the advertising department. There’s a lot of creative work there, and I think you’d enjoy it.”
Cheng Wan flipped through the magazine, smiling. Then she heard Chang Le mention something and looked up in surprise. “Maternity leave?”
“Yeah, that’s the other reason I came.” Chang Le pulled out more documents and explained, “These are your maternity leave papers. I’ve already filled everything out. You just need to sign, and you’ll be approved for 18 months of leave.”
“Eighteen months?” Cheng Wan looked at her, surprised. “Isn’t that too long?”
“It’s based on labor laws. Alphas get 1 to 3 months, betas get 1 to 6 months, and Omegas like you get 6 to 18 months,” Chang Le said with a smile. “The company approved the full time for you. You should take this chance to rest and recover. Come back healthy and refreshed.”
Cheng Wan blinked, then instinctively turned to look at Bai Juntang, who had just come over.
Bai Juntang still looked calm as ever. She handed a bottle of soda water to Chang Le and a glass of warm water to Cheng Wan.
“I’m heading out soon to pick up lunch. The rice is already cooking,” Bai Juntang said. “You two relax here, watch some TV, and chat for a bit.”
Chang Le hugged Cheng Wan happily and said, “Thanks for the lunch, Miss Bai. I get to save some money today.”
Bai Juntang just smiled and didn’t say anything. She picked up her things and headed out.
Once the door closed, Chang Le scooted closer and hugged Cheng Wan, who smelled sweet and soft. “Wanwan, your Miss Bai really treats you well. I heard your leave was approved directly by headquarters. It must’ve been because of her, right?”
Cheng Wan wasn’t sure, so she just smiled and said, “I don’t think I need that long of a break. If I’m gone for a year and a half, I might forget everything.”
“A good skill stays with you no matter what,” Chang Le said. “What, are you planning to stay in a junior position forever?”
Cheng Wan didn’t really think about it like that. She just wanted to do her job well. Career planning wasn’t something she focused on. After all, she was an Omega. If the company wanted to get rid of her, all it took was a word.
Just as Cheng Wan finished signing the documents, the doorbell rang.
While tidying up, Chang Le asked, “Miss Bai doesn’t bring her keys when she goes out?”
Cheng Wan paused for a moment. She was about to say the door had a fingerprint lock, but before she could respond, Chang Le had already walked over and opened it.
Standing at the door was a tall woman. She wore a black T-shirt and black cargo pants. Despite the hot weather, she had on shiny black combat boots. Her hair was tied back in a bold wolf-cut with streaks of blue. She looked strong and cool.
The woman looked at Chang Le, blinked, and asked, “Is Bai Juntang home?”
