How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 34
The two of them strolled through the pedestrian street, and Cheng Wan was truly hungry. Everything she saw made her want to eat, and after a while, they decided on a barbecue place that looked clean and inviting.
In summer, the signature dishes were crayfish and barbecue. Almost every table in the restaurant had bright red crayfish, along with pitchers of beer.
Cheng Wan couldn’t drink beer, but she could still enjoy the crayfish.
They found a table and sat down. As soon as Cheng Wan caught a whiff of the delicious aroma in the air, her eyes lit up as she looked at Bai Juntang and the ordering machine in front of her.
“The crayfish is on special today,” the waiter told them. “One pound of crayfish comes with a pitcher of beer, and they’re fresh and clean.”
Cheng Wan was craving spicy crayfish, but Bai Juntang, with a neutral expression, said, “We don’t need the crayfish.”
The waiter then added, “The barbecue is also on a 10% discount.”
Cheng Wan was also in the mood for some barbecue—grilled meat skewers, grilled gluten, and grilled squid.
But Bai Juntang remained calm and said again, “We don’t need the barbecue either.”
Both the waiter and Cheng Wan were confused. Why come to the restaurant if they weren’t going to order anything?
Bai Juntang ended up ordering some cold dishes and stir-fried vegetables. Then, she handed the ordering machine back to the waiter and said, “And please bring us a pot of hot water.”
As the waiter walked away with the order, Cheng Wan couldn’t help but purse her lips. She looked at Bai Juntang and asked, “Why aren’t we ordering the crayfish?”
She really wanted something spicy.
“You can’t eat that right now,” Bai Juntang said, noticing Cheng Wan’s conflicted expression. “Both the crayfish and the barbecue aren’t clean. If you eat them, your stomach won’t handle it.”
“But other dishes come from the same kitchen, so why can’t we eat the crayfish?”
Cheng Wan was really craving it. She didn’t know why she felt this way—usually, if Bai Juntang said she couldn’t have something, she’d accept it without protest. But today, she really wanted some spicy crayfish. Not being able to have it made her want to cry.
Almost every table had crayfish, except theirs.
“They’re not clean,” Bai Juntang explained calmly. “If you really want some, I’ll have Aunt Pei make them for you when she comes back, okay?”
Cheng Wan shook her head. As the waiter brought their dishes, her eyes involuntarily started to well up.
Pregnancy hormones had a strange effect on her. Cheng Wan couldn’t believe that she was feeling upset just because she couldn’t have a plate of crayfish. Just a moment ago, she had felt cared for by Bai Juntang, but now, she couldn’t help but feel that Bai Juntang was being unreasonably harsh.
She couldn’t even have crayfish.
Bai Juntang had never seen Cheng Wan like this. She was taken aback. It was just crayfish—why was Cheng Wan acting like she might cry over it?
Cheng Wan rubbed her eyes, her nose turning slightly red, making her look especially pitiful.
“Alright, alright,” Bai Juntang sighed, feeling helpless. She reached out and gently rubbed the corner of Cheng Wan’s eye, looking at her flushed face. Unable to resist, she softened. “We’ll get a small portion of crayfish to satisfy your craving, but no more, okay?”
Cheng Wan stared at Bai Juntang, then explained, “It’s not that I really want it, I just feel like since we’re here, it would be a shame not to get some…”
“Alright, since we’re already here.” Bai Juntang helplessly stopped the waiter bringing the dishes and ordered a portion of crayfish. She turned to Cheng Wan and asked, “Do you want spicy or garlic flavor?”
Cheng Wan replied earnestly, “Spicy, please, thank you.”
Finally, Cheng Wan got to enjoy the crayfish she had been craving. She also remembered Bai Juntang’s warning and made sure to stop after finishing the small portion.
After dinner, the two of them casually walked around the pedestrian street again. They didn’t have much to say, just walking in silence for two laps before heading home.
As summer settled in, the weather had become less cool. When they returned, Cheng Wan took a shower to wash off the smell of oil and smoke, feeling much more comfortable afterward.
The air conditioning was set to 24°C, and the cool breeze from the fan made the entire bedroom pleasantly chilly.
Lying in bed, Cheng Wan began to feel drowsy. She heard Bai Juntang in the living room, seemingly on a phone call. The sound was faint, almost muffled, which only made Cheng Wan feel sleepier.
But it wasn’t even 9 PM yet—why was she so tired?
Before she could think about it, Cheng Wan fell into a deep sleep.
This sleep was restless. Cheng Wan felt like she had only dozed off for a moment, but when she opened her eyes, the bedside lamp was still on. She wasn’t sure what time it was now.
Groggily, she sat up in bed, looking at the covers, not remembering when she had pulled them over herself.
She fumbled under her pillow for her phone, unlocked it, and saw that it was already past 2 AM.
Had she really slept for that long?
Still feeling groggy and sluggish, Cheng Wan rubbed her belly. She was hungry again.
Was it common for pregnant women to get hungry so easily?
Confused, Cheng Wan even Googled it to see if there was something wrong. The results said that during pregnancy, it’s normal for Omega’s to feel hungrier, be less active, and crave sleep.
Since it was normal, Cheng Wan didn’t dwell on it too much. She put on her green dinosaur slippers and headed to the kitchen to see if there was anything to eat.
As she opened the door, she peeked out. The villa was quiet at 2 AM, with no lights on downstairs, and the second floor was completely dark.
It seemed like Bai Juntang was already asleep.
Cheng Wan closed the door, and as she did, the small nightlight by the door clicked on. It seemed like it turned on automatically as she moved, and each nightlight along the way lit up as she walked.
She walked through the dimly lit hallway, guided by the little nightlights, until she reached the kitchen and turned on the light.
She glanced back at the warm, yellow lights in the living room and wondered who had installed them. They looked so comforting.
Cheng Wan then looked up toward the second floor, briefly thinking about it, but soon dismissed the thought. She figured Bai Juntang probably hadn’t installed all these nightlights just for her.
The fridge was filled with plenty of ingredients. Before leaving, Aunt Pei had prepared a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits, just in case the two of them got hungry.
Cheng Wan was really hungry. She searched through the fridge, unsure of what to eat. She could cook some vegetables, but the rice would take more than half an hour to steam. She was so hungry that she felt like she could eat an entire cow—there was no way she could wait that long.
After digging around, Cheng Wan found two ripe, red tomatoes.
She sniffed them, enjoying the fresh, sweet aroma, which made her mouth water. The smell was so tempting that it almost made her drool.
Cheng Wan got up and took the tomatoes to wash them. Just as she was about to take a bite, she heard footsteps behind her. She turned around and saw Bai Juntang standing in the kitchen doorway, wearing a white lace nightgown, with her arms crossed.
“What are you doing?”
Bai Juntang looked at Cheng Wan, who had sneaked into the kitchen late at night, and then glanced at the tomatoes in her hands. “Are you going to eat those?”
Guazi had appeared out of nowhere, rubbing against Cheng Wan’s feet, its little head lifted, looking at her with bright, shiny eyes.
Cheng Wan pressed her lips together and explained, “I woke up hungry, so I was just looking for something to eat.”
At first, Cheng Wan thought Bai Juntang would scold her, but instead, Bai Juntang simply sighed. She walked over, took the tomatoes from Cheng Wan’s hands, and said, “Don’t eat food straight from the fridge.”
Cheng Wan nodded in agreement.
Bai Juntang noticed Cheng Wan’s messy hair, her bangs just brushing her eyelashes, and how she lowered her head to listen obediently. It made her look so cute that even with her usual demeanor, Bai Juntang couldn’t stay upset.
“Are you hungry?” Bai Juntang asked.
Cheng Wan nodded again, then hesitated before looking up at Bai Juntang. She explained, “I checked online, and it says that during the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy, it’s normal to feel hungry all the time. It’s not me wanting to eat.”
It was the baby who was hungry.
Bai Juntang blinked, surprised. She hadn’t realized before that Cheng Wan, despite her youth, could be so determined when it came to food.
“Wait five minutes,” Bai Juntang said. “I’ll make you some noodles. You can go wait in the dining room.”
“Is that okay?” Cheng Wan asked, uncertain.
“If you want to help, just bring me a hair tie,” Bai Juntang replied.
Cheng Wan obediently went to her room and returned with a small orange hair tie, decorated with a cute bow. She watched as Bai Juntang tied her black hair into a low ponytail and then began preparing the meal.
Although Cheng Wan felt a bit uneasy, Bai Juntang seemed so confident, and with her hunger intensifying, Cheng Wan could only sit at the dining table, playing with the little cat that had just woken up.
The little cat curled up in Cheng Wan’s lap, purring contentedly. Cheng Wan couldn’t tell if it was actually asleep or just pretending, but its little tail swished back and forth, looking entirely relaxed and content.
In about five minutes, Bai Juntang returned from the kitchen with a bowl of noodles and placed it in front of Cheng Wan.
It was a bowl of tomato and egg noodles, with the bright colors of golden vegetables and red broth. The smell was tangy and sweet, making it look incredibly appetizing.
Bai Juntang said, “The taste might not be perfect, but it should be fine to eat.”
Cheng Wan picked up her chopsticks and took a bite. The taste was hard to describe. It wasn’t as delicious as Aunt Pei’s cooking, but it wasn’t bad either—definitely edible.
She looked up at Bai Juntang and said, “It tastes great. The food you make, Bai Juntang, is really good.”
Bai Juntang smiled softly and sat across from her. “If you think it’s good, that’s all that matters. When I was in school, I would just cook noodles whenever I was hungry. No matter how bad it tasted, I had to eat it.”
Cheng Wan, curious, looked up at her. “Did you cook for yourself?”
“When I was younger, my mom and the others were always busy with their medical appointments. The housekeeper was just an employee, and even she had days off. So sometimes, I had to cook for myself.”
“Really?” Cheng Wan took another bite of the warm noodles and suddenly thought they tasted even better.
Bai Juntang had never cooked noodles for anyone before, not even for her mom. Cheng Wan was the first to try them.
The cool night air, still carrying a slight chill, made Bai Juntang notice the faint scent of white peach on Cheng Wan’s skin. It made her feel a little stirred.
She remembered how Cheng Wan’s eyes had been red and her nose tip a little flushed earlier in the evening. Cheng Wan had looked so cute at that moment.
Far cuter than when Cheng Wan called her “Miss Bai” in that dry, formal tone.
Bai Juntang watched as Cheng Wan finished the noodles, even drinking the remaining broth, not leaving a drop behind. Her dark eyes lingered on Cheng Wan for a moment, and then she suddenly spoke, “Speaking of which, it’s been quite a few days since we last exchanged pheromones, right?”
