How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 33
“Why does it need to be done by tomorrow? What, are you not going to make it until tomorrow?”
There was a long silence on the other end of the phone before Yang Zhiman weakly asked, “Bai… President?”
Bai Juntang ignored Yang Zhiman’s feelings and casually hung up the phone. She believed that if Yang Zhiman had any sense, she wouldn’t continue forcing Cheng Wan to work.
Although it was a bit petty to use her authority, Bai Juntang didn’t care. As long as it solved the problem, how she solved it didn’t matter.
When Bai Juntang looked up, she saw Cheng Wan standing by, watching her. From Cheng Wan’s expression, it was clear she had heard the conversation.
“Bai… President Bai…” Cheng Wan said nervously, her eyes looking at her awkwardly. “You shouldn’t have answered my phone.”
Bai Juntang looked at her, unamused. “What, do you feel like I’ve interrupted your work?”
Cheng Wan stood still, clutching the hem of her clothes. She said softly, “That was my private matter.”
Bai Juntang, clearly not happy, stood up and faced her. “Your private matter? Your private matter is staying up late to work while carrying my child?”
“I’m almost done. Once I finish, I won’t stay up anymore. Besides, it’s only ten o’clock.”
“At ten o’clock, you should be in bed. Pregnant women need to ensure proper rest, didn’t the doctor say so today?”
“But…”
Bai Juntang waved her hand, her face serious. “Cheng Wan, you should know by now that you’re not just yourself anymore. You were malnourished before, and now that you’ve managed to regain some strength, I won’t allow you to stay up like this.”
Cheng Wan didn’t reply, her brow furrowed slightly.
During the check-up today, Dr. Huang had also advised Cheng Wan not to stay up late, and now Bai Juntang’s words seemed to confirm that advice.
But why did she answer her phone?
Cheng Wan couldn’t figure it out before she went to bed. She wasn’t sure whether she had argued with Bai Juntang or not, but the topic had been about her staying up late to work.
The next day, the atmosphere at home felt a little strange.
Bai Juntang was probably still angry about the argument with Cheng Wan from the day before. During breakfast, she asked the usual questions, but when driving to work, she didn’t say a word.
At the office, Bai Juntang didn’t linger. She dropped Cheng Wan off and left quickly, making Cheng Wan feel uneasy.
Chang Le, the little girl, kept smiling at Cheng Wan and even secretly changed her contact name to “Boss Lady,” which made Cheng Wan laugh but also feel helpless.
Cheng Wan had thought Yang Zhiman would come looking for trouble, but to her surprise, it had been almost a week, and Yang Zhiman hadn’t appeared at the office. In fact, Cheng Wan heard that Yang Zhiman was about to be transferred.
“The headquarters issued a new appointment,” Supervisor Zhou casually said during lunch while chatting with Chang Le and the others. “It seems they’re sending President Yang to North America to develop new business. If she does well, she might stay there.”
Everyone was confused. “So, is this a promotion for President Yang?”
“Developing the North American market? They’ll probably give her a high position once that’s done, right?”
“Maybe she’ll be the North American Regional Manager?”
They all started discussing it, but Cheng Wan didn’t really listen. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Yang Zhiman’s transfer had everything to do with her.
She thought back to Bai Juntang’s attitude the night before and felt a tightness in her chest.
Cheng Wan wasn’t angry that Bai Juntang had stood up for her. She understood Yang Zhiman’s attempt to force her to resign. She knew all too well that as an Omega without a job, she would be at the mercy of others.
Yang Zhiman being transferred might have been about business, but Cheng Wan knew this was Bai Juntang’s way of teaching her a lesson.
The reason Cheng Wan felt uneasy was because it was the first time she fully realized the extent of Bai Juntang’s power. It reminded her of how her adoptive parents had once used their influence to make her comply, using everything to take away what they wanted. Bai Juntang, too, had that kind of power.
When Cheng Wan thought about how she came to be by Bai Juntang’s side, she couldn’t help but shiver.
Her hand instinctively went to her abdomen. Cheng Wan couldn’t help but feel that Bai Juntang had a hundred ways to ensure she would have the child and get nothing in return. She couldn’t understand why Bai Juntang was treating her so kindly, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something else behind it.
At this point, Cheng Wan’s baby was over three months old. During her recent check-up, she had seen the little one on the ultrasound. It was still blurry, but Cheng Wan already felt a deep love for it.
This was the baby growing inside her, the only family she had with a blood connection.
Could she really, after the baby was born, hand it over to Bai Juntang and leave?
Could she really do that…?
Yang Zhiman had quietly left the company. She didn’t even come to pack up her things from the office. Instead, she had asked Supervisor Zhou to send someone to gather her belongings and send them to her home, as though there was something terrifying in the company. She didn’t want to be near it at all.
The CEO had left, which opened up a position. After a selection process within the company and a decision from headquarters, it was decided that promoting someone from within would be the best option, as an outsider wouldn’t be familiar with the company.
From that point on, the situation was no longer Cheng Wan’s concern. She was just a small employee, and who became the CEO had nothing to do with her.
However, over the past two weeks, Cheng Wan noticed some changes in herself.
Today, someone in the office was celebrating a birthday, and in the afternoon, they served everyone tea and snacks. Cheng Wan was given a piece of velvet cake, but since just eating cake was a bit much, everyone decided to order milk tea as well.
Cheng Wan ate quite a bit, especially because her friend, Chang Le, not only ordered milk tea but also a fruit platter.
The afternoon tea was enjoyable, but once Cheng Wan sat in Bai Juntang’s car, she began to feel hungry again.
She gently touched her noticeably growing belly, realizing it wasn’t really her who was hungry—it was probably the little one inside her.
Bai Juntang noticed Cheng Wan’s gesture and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Cheng Wan replied, turning to look at her. Since their last “argument,” their relationship still felt somewhat awkward. However, Bai Juntang seemed in a particularly good mood today, her expression much more relaxed than usual.
Bai Juntang asked casually, and when Cheng Wan didn’t want to answer, she didn’t push further. Instead, she continued driving and said, “Aunt Pei went home today. Do you want to eat out or cook at home?”
Cheng Wan was a little curious. “Can you cook?”
“No,” Bai Juntang replied without hesitation. “But I can make noodles or hot pot.”
Cheng Wan thought for a moment. She could cook, but ever since getting pregnant, she couldn’t stand the smell of cooking oil, so she hadn’t been in the kitchen for a while.
“How about we eat out?” Cheng Wan suggested. “It’s more convenient.”
“Alright,” Bai Juntang agreed, without hesitation, as she drove toward home. “We’ll feed Guazi first, then go out to eat. There are a few new places on the walking street near the community. We can walk there, and it’ll be like a little stroll.”
Cheng Wan didn’t mind. When they got home, the chubby little cat, Guazi, came running over.
Guazi, the 88,000-yuan orange cat, had quite a backstory. After Bai Juntang realized she had been tricked, she went back to the store. The store owner explained that while Guazi was an orange cat, she was also very beautiful.
Bai Juntang wasn’t naive, and she refused to accept being deceived, but the store owner wasn’t willing to offer a refund.
After some back and forth, they reached a compromise. Guazi was considered a gift, and the store gave Bai Juntang a card with 88,000 yuan in credits, which she could use for pet food, toys, grooming, and other services.
Bai Juntang had no choice but to accept.
Today, before leaving, Aunt Pei had taken Guazi for a bath, so now the little cat smelled sweet and fragrant. As she ran over, she left a pleasant scent in the air.
Cheng Wan couldn’t resist, holding Guazi and kissing the top of her head before they left for dinner.
Bai Juntang had changed into casual clothes and stood on the second floor, watching Cheng Wan play with the little cat. There was a rare tenderness in her expression.
Little Guazi had grown incredibly fast in the month since arriving at the house. Like a little tiger, it claimed the entire first floor as its territory, allowing the other three members of the household to “live” there.
After Cheng Wan spent some time playing with the energetic little cat, Bai Juntang came downstairs and looked at her. “Do you need to change clothes, or should we head out to eat now?”
“Let’s go straight out, I don’t need to change,” Cheng Wan replied, cuddling the little cat affectionately before putting it down. She stood up and asked, “What do you feel like eating?”
“I’m not sure, let’s see what we find on the way. Do you have anything in mind?”
“No, I can eat anything.”
Once they stepped outside, Cheng Wan and Bai Juntang walked toward the entrance of the community. Since it was a villa area with few people and the villas were spaced far apart, there weren’t many people around.
However, as they reached the pedestrian street, it became much more crowded. Probably because summer had arrived, the street was even hosting a night market.
The street was lit with beautiful neon lights, and the lobster restaurants and barbecue stalls were bustling with people, giving the feeling that summer had already fully arrived.
Since the pedestrian street had no cars, many parents let their children run freely. The kids darted around the crowd, making Bai Juntang frown. Instinctively, she moved closer to Cheng Wan and guided her to the inner side of the street, away from the rushing children.
Ever since Cheng Wan became pregnant, Bai Juntang had been extra cautious about these running kids, always making sure to avoid them when walking with Cheng Wan.
If one of those rowdy kids ran out and caused an accident, Bai Juntang wouldn’t forgive them.
Cheng Wan realized that Bai Juntang seemed to be protecting her, and she couldn’t help but glance up at her.
In the dim evening light, Bai Juntang’s profile looked especially beautiful. Her high nose and deep-set eyes made her look like a piece of art.
Cheng Wan thought to herself, Bai Juntang’s mothers must be very beautiful to have given birth to someone as stunning as her.
She wondered who her own baby would resemble. If it took after Bai Juntang’s looks, it would be fine—after all, the child would never have to worry about anything in life.
Bai Juntang noticed Cheng Wan’s gaze and turned to look at her, softly asking, “What’s wrong?”
Cheng Wan blinked, realizing she had been lost in thought. She blushed and said, “Nothing, I was just thinking about what to eat.”
Worried that Cheng Wan might get lost in the crowd, Bai Juntang took her hand, their fingers intertwining.
The intimate gesture left Cheng Wan stunned for a moment. She nervously looked at Bai Juntang, not understanding the meaning behind it.
Bai Juntang’s dark eyes met hers as she held their hands tightly. “Don’t get lost, it’s pretty crowded here.”
