How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 32
The appearance of Yang Zhiman briefly interrupted Bai Juntang’s thoughts. She rolled down the car window and looked at the smiling woman, feeling a bit confused. “What’s going on, President Yang?”
“President Bai,” Yang Zhiman greeted warmly. “I just finished lunch and was on my way back. When I saw your car parked here, I thought I’d come over and say hello.”
Bai Juntang nodded and exchanged a few pleasantries with Yang Zhiman. “President Yang, it’s so late. Haven’t you gone home yet?”
“How could I leave when there’s still work to be done?” Yang Zhiman smiled, her expression completely different from earlier in the day. She added, “President Bai, I’ve seen your car at the headquarters a couple of times before. So, when I saw it parked here, I immediately recognized it. I was just wondering, what brings you here?”
Bai Juntang couldn’t exactly say she was waiting for Cheng Wan to finish work, could she?
“I’m just waiting for a friend. It’s just that parking somewhere else would cost a fee,” Bai Juntang said, giving a casual lie. She then added, “When the work isn’t urgent, there’s no need to stay late. It can always be done tomorrow.”
“Yes, President Bai is really considerate toward our employees,” Yang Zhiman seemed to be getting carried away with flattery, standing by the car and chatting with Bai Juntang. “This parking lot operates on an annual lease, so if President Bai ever wants to park here, feel free to do so—it’s part of your own company.”
Aside from her love for stylish clothes, Bai Juntang was also very interested in cars.
In addition to racing cars, she owned several luxury sports cars worth millions. Even her business car was carefully chosen, with the Maybach she drove most often being worth over ten million.
That’s why the Gan Gu Racing Club not only hosted races but also took care of Bai Juntang’s “precious cars,” which cost her quite a lot of money.
Today, Bai Juntang hadn’t driven the car she used to drop Cheng Wan off earlier in the morning, but instead, she drove another well-maintained car. No wonder Yang Zhiman recognized it.
As Bai Juntang was chatting with Yang Zhiman through the car window—mostly just listening to Yang Zhiman enthusiastically talk—her phone, which had been lying on the seat, suddenly buzzed.
She picked up her phone and glanced at the screen. It was a message from Cheng Wan, saying that she and Chang Le had finished their work and were on their way down.
Looking up, Bai Juntang saw the elevator’s number starting to descend. It seemed that Cheng Wan and the others were already on their way down.
Yang Zhiman, noticing Bai Juntang’s reaction, smiled warmly and said, “I take it your friend has arrived? There are plenty of great places to eat and have fun around here. Would you like me to recommend something?”
Bai Juntang frowned slightly. How had she never noticed how talkative this woman was?
“No, thank you. I’ll handle it myself,” Bai Juntang replied, pushing open the car door and stepping out. “President Yang, you don’t need to worry about me. It’s getting late. You should head home now.”
Bai Juntang’s tone made it clear: “Stop standing here chatting and go.” Yang Zhiman, sensing the hint, smiled awkwardly. She turned around just as Cheng Wan and Chang Le walked out of the elevator.
The two girls were walking hand in hand, with Chang Le carrying a small bag and holding a cup of milk tea. They seemed to be chatting happily, both in good spirits.
“Cheng Wan, Chang Le.”
Yang Zhiman furrowed her brows slightly but, seeing Bai Juntang still there, could only greet them with a smile. “Aren’t you two going home yet? It’s so late.”
Cheng Wan and Chang Le froze when they looked up.
What was going on?
Chang Le was also taken aback. She glanced at Cheng Wan, then at Bai Juntang, before turning to Yang Zhiman and greeting her, “Hello, President Yang.”
“Have you finished your work?” Yang Zhiman asked, already feeling a bit annoyed, especially with Cheng Wan. “Now that you’re done, hurry up and go home. You should be more attentive to your work in the future.”
Cheng Wan and Chang Le responded quietly, and once again, the four of them fell into an awkward silence.
What was happening?
Why was no one leaving?
Bai Juntang obviously couldn’t leave yet—she was here to pick someone up, and that person was right in front of her. How could she leave?
Cheng Wan and Chang Le couldn’t leave either. Bai Juntang had driven here, and they had agreed she would drop Chang Le off first. It wouldn’t be right to let the girl walk home alone.
Yang Zhiman, who wasn’t aware of the dynamics between the three of them, took on the tone of a company executive and said to Cheng Wan and Chang Le, “Why are you still standing there? Haven’t you seen our company’s President Bai?”
“President Bai?” Chang Le blinked, looking at Bai Juntang. “Which company is President Bai the head of?”
“Of course, it’s President Bai from the headquarters. Do you think Gangu has multiple President Bais?” Yang Zhiman responded, clearly irritated by Chang Le’s lack of manners. Bai Juntang had come all the way to her place, so Yang Zhiman felt the need to show off a little.
“Alright, you two should stop standing here. Hurry up and leave,” Yang Zhiman said with a slight frown. “President Bai and I are waiting for someone.”
Chang Le opened her mouth to speak, but Cheng Wan quickly stopped her. She glanced at Bai Juntang before turning to Chang Le. “Let’s go. We shouldn’t disturb President Yang.”
“But…” Chang Le protested.
“Let’s go,” Cheng Wan said firmly, pulling Chang Le away from the underground parking lot. Bai Juntang watched them leave, feeling a bit frustrated.
What was that about?
She came here to wait for Cheng Wan after work, but now they just walked off without saying anything.
Bai Juntang didn’t understand. Was there something between her and Cheng Wan that couldn’t be said out loud? Why did they feel the need to hide it from others?
Though she was angry, Bai Juntang didn’t let it show on her face. She nodded politely to Yang Zhiman and said she wouldn’t be waiting for her friend anymore before getting in the car and driving off.
Naturally, Bai Juntang drove much faster than the two of them could walk. She pulled over to the side of the road, rolled down the window, and called Cheng Wan.
The phone picked up quickly.
Cheng Wan’s voice came through the line. “I’m taking Chang Le to the subway entrance. I’ll head home on my own after that.”
Bai Juntang was clearly upset. With a cold tone, she said, “Which subway entrance? I’ll come pick you up.”
“No need to pick me up,” Cheng Wan replied. “This subway entrance is near my place. I can go home on my own.”
Maybe it was Cheng Wan’s tone that upset her. Bai Juntang snapped, “I said I’ll pick you up at the subway entrance.”
There was a long silence on the other end of the phone. Cheng Wan finally sighed and said softly, “Alright, I’ll wait for you at Exit B.”
After hanging up, Bai Juntang didn’t waste any time. She pressed the accelerator and drove off.
Chang Le hadn’t actually left. She was still chatting with Cheng Wan, gossiping away. She never expected that Bai Juntang was their boss. If Cheng Wan was with Bai Juntang, didn’t that mean she was the boss’s partner?
“Yang Zhiman really needs to get her eyes checked,” Chang Le said, eyeing Cheng Wan up and down. “She has the nerve to try to take advantage of such a beautiful boss. She sure has guts.”
Cheng Wan could only look at her helplessly. “Chang Le, about President Bai…”
“I know, I know!” Chang Le said with a bright smile. “This is how it goes in the novels, right? You two have to keep your identities a secret, and then you’ll slap Yang Zhiman in the face hard. I get it!”
Cheng Wan didn’t know where Chang Le had gotten all these random ideas from, but she wasn’t wrong—her and Bai Juntang’s identities did need to be kept secret.
However, that wasn’t really the issue with Yang Zhiman.
The two chatted for a moment, and just then, a black Maybach pulled up beside them.
The window rolled down, and Bai Juntang looked at the two of them. “Get in the car.”
Chang Le, never one to miss the hint, smiled brightly and slung her little bag over her shoulder. “I’m going to take the subway now, I won’t disturb you two on your way home. See you tomorrow!”
Once Chang Le had left for the subway, Cheng Wan turned to look at Bai Juntang.
Bai Juntang met her gaze, her expression not particularly pleasant.
Is she upset?
Cheng Wan sat in the passenger seat, still a little uneasy, unable to understand what she had done to make Bai Juntang angry.
“Take the day off tomorrow,” Bai Juntang broke the silence, speaking to Cheng Wan. “It’s time for a check-up anyway. You might as well do the prenatal exam while you’re at it.”
“Okay.” Cheng Wan gently placed her hand on her slightly rounded belly, not objecting.
Cheng Wan had thought that with Bai Juntang’s serious face, she would definitely get scolded once they got home. But when they arrived, Bai Juntang didn’t start an argument. Instead, she even poured Cheng Wan a glass of milk, waiting until Cheng Wan finished it before letting her go to bed.
Snuggled in her own bed, Cheng Wan felt a strange sense of disarray. She had requested a day off from Supervisor Zhou, which was why she was able to sleep in.
The next morning, when she woke up, Bai Juntang was already in the dining room eating breakfast.
“You’re up, Wan Wan,” Bai Juntang said softly. “Today’s your prenatal check-up. I’ve already prepared everything. It’s on the coffee table in the living room.”
Aunt Pei brought over a bowl of egg custard and placed it on the table, then turned to ask Bai Juntang, “The check-up doesn’t require fasting, does it?”
Bai Juntang lowered her eyes and replied, “No, it’s a regular check-up.”
“Good, then I’ll make sure to give Wan Wan more. She’s been eating well these past few days; she needs to eat more.”
Watching Aunt Pei go back into the kitchen, Cheng Wan sat across from Bai Juntang, mumbled a quick “Good morning,” and began eating in silence.
Bai Juntang glanced up at Cheng Wan. She wasn’t sure what she was feeling, but for some reason, she really wanted to be angry.
But then she thought—why should she be angry?
And that just made her even more frustrated.
The two of them ate breakfast in silence, both lost in their thoughts. They went to the hospital for the check-up and, while they were there, also did the prenatal exam.
Dr. Huang reviewed Cheng Wan’s test results, and her expression softened a bit. She turned to them both and said, “See, the values have improved, right? Deep exchange of pheromones, two to three times a week, is really beneficial. And it helps with the appetite of pregnant women, which is important for the baby’s growth.”
Dr. Huang then went on to give them some additional advice and reminded them to come back for another check-up next month.
“Dr. Huang,” before leaving, Bai Juntang asked, “Can Cheng Wan stay up late?”
Dr. Huang shook her head. “It’s best not to stay up late. After all, what could be more important than the baby?” She turned to Bai Juntang and added, “Pregnant women should avoid staying up late or doing heavy work. While it won’t necessarily harm anything immediately, it’s still important to go to bed early and wake up early.”
After hearing Dr. Huang’s advice, Bai Juntang glanced at Cheng Wan. Cheng Wan felt a bit uncomfortable under her gaze and didn’t dare say anything.
Once they returned home and had lunch, Cheng Wan felt a bit tired and ended up napping until nearly 6 PM. When she opened her eyes, she noticed several missed calls and messages on her phone.
Cheng Wan checked the notifications, all of which were from Yang Zhiman, who seemed to be calling about a work matter.
Knock, knock, knock
Bai Juntang knocked on Cheng Wan’s door. Cheng Wan was sitting on the bed, holding her phone, with the curtains drawn thickly, letting in only a sliver of light.
“Come eat when you wake up,” Bai Juntang said softly. “I had Aunt Pei make your favorite dishes.”
Cheng Wan quickly put her phone away and got up to follow Bai Juntang to the dining room.
Despite napping through the afternoon, Cheng Wan still felt hungry and ate quite a bit. Bai Juntang watched her eat, her expression softening. She even personally served Cheng Wan several dishes.
After the meal, Cheng Wan looked at Bai Juntang and asked, “Could I borrow the laptop again? I need to finish some things.”
Bai Juntang, a bit confused, asked, “But you took the day off today. Why are you working overtime?”
“There’s a project I’ve been working on, and I don’t want to hand it off to someone else. I just thought I’d finish it today,” Cheng Wan explained. She then added, “Once I’m done, I won’t need the laptop anymore.”
Bai Juntang sighed and gently touched Cheng Wan’s face. “Don’t stay up too late,” she said, her tone soft.
Cheng Wan nodded in agreement.
Since Bai Juntang didn’t have much work today, she sat in the living room, eating fruit and watching Cheng Wan, who was typing away on her laptop. Occasionally, Cheng Wan would take a call or text someone, looking focused on her work.
Bai Juntang had initially thought Cheng Wan’s work would only take a short time, but as it got closer to 10 PM, Cheng Wan was still working.
This made Bai Juntang a bit upset. The doctor had just advised against staying up late, yet Cheng Wan had been working since after dinner. What exactly was she working on? Even Bai Juntang, as the CEO, didn’t work this late.
Finally, Cheng Wan finished a phase of her work and let out a soft sigh of relief. When she turned her head, she noticed Bai Juntang was staring at her intently. The look was so direct that it caught Cheng Wan off guard.
Bai Juntang, resting her head on her hand, frowned slightly and asked, “Are you done?”
“Almost,” Cheng Wan replied. She stood up and said, “I’m going to the restroom.”
Watching Cheng Wan leave, Bai Juntang quietly moved closer to the computer and looked at the file on the screen. The more she stared at it, the more her frown deepened.
She had initially thought it was an urgent task that needed to be finished today, but as she looked closer, she realized it was just some statistical data. These could easily be left until the end of the month. Doing it now was completely unnecessary. As more data was added over time, this work would become useless.
Bai Juntang couldn’t understand who would assign such repetitive and pointless tasks to an employee. She paid so many people to work, and this was how they were making things difficult for a junior staff member?
Just as Bai Juntang was getting frustrated, Cheng Wan’s phone, which was lying on the side, rang. Bai Juntang glanced at the screen—it was a call from Yang Zhiman.
As soon as the call was answered, Yang Zhiman’s voice came through, frantic and irritated. “Cheng Wan, do you have any idea how urgent this data is? I need it by tomorrow! You have to get it done tonight!”
Bai Juntang let out a soft grunt, her face darkening as she asked, “Why does it need to be done by tomorrow? Why, you won’t live until tomorrow?”
