How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 31
The next day, Bai Juntang didn’t bring up the late-night work issue. To her, Cheng Wan was an adult, and she didn’t feel the need to keep watching over her like a child.
This morning, Aunt Pei had prepared an extra tea egg for Cheng Wan, which she ate easily along with a bottle of fresh milk.
“Your appetite seems to be better lately,” Bai Juntang casually remarked as they were heading out. “You’ve been eating more these past couple of days.”
Cheng Wan nodded, walking behind her. “I think my appetite has improved. I haven’t felt nauseous at all recently.”
Not only had the nausea stopped, but Cheng Wan was also constantly feeling hungry. Yesterday, she had just finished hotpot, and today, she was already craving something else.
However, Cheng Wan didn’t mention this to Bai Juntang. It wasn’t a big deal, and besides… she didn’t want to annoy Bai Juntang, so she kept it to herself.
As usual, Bai Juntang dropped her off at the elevator to the underground parking lot. As soon as Cheng Wan entered the elevator, she found Yang Zhiman stepping in as well.
“Good morning, Ms. Yang,” Cheng Wan greeted politely before stepping into the corner.
Lately, Cheng Wan had been feeling like she kept running into Yang Zhiman in the elevator. It was becoming hard to ignore.
Yang Zhiman seemed in a bad mood today. She glanced briefly at Cheng Wan, gave a gruff “mm,” and didn’t say anything else.
The two exited the elevator one after the other. When Yang Zhiman entered the company, she immediately scowled at the employees who were still casually chatting.
“Is this a company or a marketplace?” she snapped. “It’s early in the morning, and you’re all making noise like this.”
With a scowl, she ordered, “Meeting, now!”
Cheng Wan worked in a small branch of the company, with only around forty or fifty employees, excluding the sales and logistics teams.
In the meeting room, Yang Zhiman, clearly upset, addressed everyone: “So far this year, we’ve only completed 60% of our targets, and we’re already in the second quarter. If things keep going like this, we’ll all be out of jobs.”
The employees were puzzled by her anger. After all, 60% progress was actually higher than many other companies, and it wasn’t even summer yet.
Yang Zhiman pulled out her phone, swiped it a few times, and projected the screen onto the big monitor. “Look at some of these employees—while their work isn’t finished, they’re out having hotpot with colleagues.”
Cheng Wan glanced up and saw that the photo displayed was one that Chang Le had posted yesterday from their hotpot dinner.
Yang Zhiman was furious. She pointed at the screen and said, “How can you leave work when you haven’t completed your tasks? If I didn’t finish my work, I’d stay until midnight if I had to.”
Then, she turned to Chang Le and yelled, “Chang Le, you had a great time yesterday, didn’t you? You made sure to clock in and clock out on time, but you couldn’t stay and finish your work?”
Chang Le lowered her head, staying silent, but secretly flipped Yang Zhiman the bird behind her back.
The entire meeting room fell silent, everyone afraid to speak.
After the meeting, Yang Zhiman stood up and told everyone, “Chang Le didn’t finish her work, so I’m deducting 300 yuan from her salary. Cheng Wan, come to my office.”
Cheng Wan followed Yang Zhiman into her office. Yang Zhiman turned and sat in her chair, still wearing an expression of impatience.
“Cheng Wan, since you finished your work at home last night, I won’t deduct your salary today,” Yang Zhiman said, speaking coolly as she crossed her legs. “But I’ve noticed that you’ve been getting picked up in a luxury car lately. I know your family must be well-off, but this is still a workplace. You still need to do your job.”
She looked at Cheng Wan and added, “You should realize that many companies won’t hire an Omega employee, especially one who’s pregnant. There are many tasks you can’t do now. The only reason I’m keeping you here is because I’m letting you stay.”
Cheng Wan furrowed her brows as she listened. She looked directly at Yang Zhiman and said, “I’ll make sure to complete my work properly, Ms. Yang.”
“You should, of course, complete your work properly,” Yang Zhiman said, looking at Cheng Wan with disdain. “I won’t treat Omega employees any differently. If you worked at another company, you wouldn’t have the same privileges, and you should be aware of that.”
Cheng Wan didn’t respond. She had long since understood the hostility the world had toward Omegas and had become accustomed to it.
The reason Yang Zhiman could say such things was because society was like that.
Omegas didn’t deserve educational resources. They weren’t meant to stay in the workplace for long, and the best thing for them was to be kept at home, hidden away for life.
After leaving Yang Zhiman’s office, Cheng Wan received a pile of documents, including those from yesterday that hadn’t been finished. It was a huge stack.
Chang Le’s situation wasn’t much better than hers. Cheng Wan didn’t even go home for lunch. She called Bai Juntang ahead of time and told her she wouldn’t be coming back for lunch.
She ate something quick and then spent the entire day working overtime.
By 6 o’clock, almost everyone had left, leaving just Cheng Wan and Chang Le working late.
Chang Le, a fresh graduate, had never experienced such pressure. She cried while working, constantly wiping her tears as she typed, looking especially pitiful.
“Woo woo woo.” Chang Le sniffed, wiping her tears, and muttered under her breath, “How can there be such a person? They won’t even let us go home.”
Cheng Wan turned around and glanced at her before getting up and walking over to pat her on the head. “How much more do you have left? I can help you.”
Without hesitation, Chang Le turned and threw herself into Cheng Wan’s arms, sobbing, “Wan Wan, let’s report Yang Zhiman to the labor bureau. What she’s doing is intentional harassment; it’s workplace bullying.”
Cheng Wan couldn’t help but laugh and gently patted Chang Le’s head. “You sure know a lot.”
“Of course!” Chang Le sniffled and said, “I researched labor law before I even joined. Society is too complicated now. If you don’t use the law to protect yourself, you’ll never survive.”
She wasn’t about to let society beat her down. She wanted to retire right after graduation.
Cheng Wan comforted her and said, “Give me the rest of the work. I can do it faster than you.”
“No way!” Chang Le protested. “I’m not trying to take advantage of you!”
“You’re working overtime because of me,” Cheng Wan replied with a smile.
“What do you mean?”
Cheng Wan paused for a moment. She didn’t tell Chang Le that Yang Zhiman treated her this way because she disliked Omega employees. Chang Le had simply become an innocent victim in this situation.
“It’s nothing,” Cheng Wan said, “Just give me these documents. I’ll help you with some of them.”
Chang Le truly felt she couldn’t handle all the work by herself, so she obediently handed half of the documents to Cheng Wan. The two of them continued to work late.
Time passed, and Cheng Wan wasn’t sure how late it was, but suddenly, her phone on the desk rang. She picked it up and saw it was Bai Juntang calling.
Chang Le, eating her spicy skewers, asked with a teasing grin, “Is that your ‘little Bai sister’?”
“Little Bai sister?” Cheng Wan couldn’t help but laugh. The nickname was cute.
Her smile lingered on her lips as she answered the phone.
“Hello?”
“It’s me.”
Bai Juntang was sitting in her office, gazing out the window as she spoke. “Are you done with your work yet?”
“Not yet. I think it’ll take about another hour.”
“Have you eaten?”
“I’ve eaten. Chang Le and I had spicy skewers.”
“Hotpot yesterday, and spicy skewers today?” Bai Juntang teased.
Cheng Wan laughed sheepishly. She almost ordered barbecue for herself, but instead, she held the phone and explained, “Spicy skewers are faster and more convenient.”
Bai Juntang wasn’t the type to mind such things. She didn’t care about what Cheng Wan had eaten. “I’m done with my work here. I’ll pick you up soon.”
“Okay,” Cheng Wan replied. “We’ll wrap up here quickly.”
After hanging up, Chang Le sipped the cola that came with her skewers and said, “You two are so sweet. Am I basically eating dog food every day?”
Cheng Wan glanced at her and responded, “No, she’s just worried about the baby.”
“Why do you sound so formal? Your baby is her baby too,” Chang Le said, still not realizing the full nature of Cheng Wan and Bai Juntang’s relationship. “Come on, let’s finish this work and try to get home before 8!”
Meanwhile, Bai Juntang sat in her car, staring at the phone she had just hung up, feeling uneasy for some reason.
At that moment, Li Chen walked in with some documents. Bai Juntang glanced at him and asked, “The investigation I asked you to do earlier—Cheng Wan is really just a regular employee at a small company, right?”
“Yes,” Li Chen replied, holding the documents. “Why?”
“She’s been working overtime for several days in a row. Do regular employees usually work that much overtime?”
“Normally, no,” Li Chen answered, confused.
He then added, “Our company doesn’t encourage overtime. Employees are paid double for overtime hours. If someone works more overtime than the company’s limit within a month, the excess time is converted into annual leave.”
“So why is Cheng Wan always working overtime?” Bai Juntang asked, still puzzled.
Li Chen was also curious. “I’m not sure. Should I ask around? The branch office’s rules aren’t as strict as the headquarters, but they still have their overtime policies.”
Bai Juntang waved her hand. “I was just asking out of curiosity.”
Li Chen noticed she was getting ready to leave and hurriedly asked, “Ms. Bai, where are you going? You haven’t finished your work yet. I just brought you the documents.”
Bai Juntang looked at him and said, “Just go home. If it’s not an important task, don’t worry about my overtime pay.”
Li Chen was stunned. What was going on? Ms. Bai was being so understanding?
When Bai Juntang parked her car at Cheng Wan’s office building’s underground parking lot, she suddenly felt unsure of what she was doing.
At first, Bai Juntang had thought that since Cheng Wan was carrying her child, it was her responsibility to take care of her.
Although Cheng Wan’s family had been manipulative, trying to scam her for money, Bai Juntang wasn’t foolish. After making a mistake once, she hadn’t allowed Cheng Wan’s family to benefit further.
Whether it was getting married, bringing Cheng Wan into her home, or picking her up every day, all of it was for the sake of Cheng Wan’s baby.
But now, sitting in her car, Bai Juntang was lost in thought.
She was starting to feel more and more upset every time Cheng Wan had to endure something unfair. She didn’t want her to work too hard, and found herself trying to ensure she ate enough at every meal.
Bai Juntang had never done these things before, but with Cheng Wan, everything felt so familiar. Now, she was waiting outside Cheng Wan’s office, ready to pick her up after work.
Bai Juntang scratched her head, feeling troubled. What was happening to her?
Could it be that she was starting to develop feelings for Cheng Wan beyond just caring for the baby?
Just as she was deep in thought, someone knocked twice on her car window. She turned to see Yang Zhiman standing by the car, waving at her.
