How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 30
Cheng Wan turned her head and immediately felt uncomfortable when she looked at Bai Juntang. Her hands were awkward, her feet were out of place, and she didn’t dare to look her directly in the eyes.
The two of them ate breakfast in silence. Today, Cheng Wan had a basket of small steamed buns and a few shao mai, and her appetite seemed to be decent.
Bai Juntang drove her to the company’s underground parking lot. She turned to Cheng Wan and said, “I’ll pick you up for lunch. I’ll call you when I get there.”
Cheng Wan nodded, about to open the car door to leave, but she realized the door was locked.
Bai Juntang’s dark, shiny eyes looked at her. With her hands resting on the steering wheel, she said, “Last night…”
Cheng Wan uncomfortably turned her head away. “There’s nothing to worry about. You didn’t do it on purpose.”
She understood the instincts of an Alpha, as she was the same.
When Bai Juntang wanted to mark her, Cheng Wan also had the desire to throw herself into her arms. It was a natural instinct that appeared after being marked, so Cheng Wan didn’t blame her.
“Okay.” Bai Juntang looked at Cheng Wan calmly. “I’ll contact you at lunch.”
Cheng Wan got out of the car and watched as Bai Juntang’s business vehicle left the company’s underground parking lot. She sighed softly.
In truth, she still couldn’t figure out what she really felt about Bai Juntang.
Bai Juntang treated her like a tool for reproduction, but what about herself?
In Cheng Wan’s mind, what was Bai Juntang to her?
She couldn’t explain it. It felt like an unsolvable puzzle.
At that moment, a white sedan pulled into the parking space next to Cheng Wan’s car. The door opened, and Yang Zhiman stepped out.
She had actually been there for a while but had only just driven the car over.
“Good morning,” Yang Zhiman said as she took off her large sunglasses, thoughtfully watching the direction in which Bai Juntang’s car disappeared. She then smiled and asked, “Did your Alpha drop you off?”
Cheng Wan was somewhat surprised that Yang Zhiman greeted her, but since the boss had initiated it, she, as an employee, couldn’t just ignore it. She nodded and said, “Yes, Ms. Yang.”
“Mm.” Yang Zhiman said with a pointed tone, “Nice car. A million-dollar business car, right? Not something just anyone can afford.”
Cheng Wan didn’t know much about cars, so she could only nod awkwardly and get into the elevator with Yang Zhiman.
Once they arrived at the company, Cheng Wan went back to her desk. Chang Le greeted her with a big smile, and the two of them leaned in and chatted excitedly.
“What? You ran into Ms. Yang?” Chang Le, sipping her milk tea, said seriously, “She’s been pretty fierce lately. You’d better be careful around her.”
Cheng Wan sighed helplessly. “But when I ran into her, I couldn’t exactly run away. We took the elevator together, so it’s no big deal.”
Who hasn’t shared an elevator with their boss?
Chang Le pouted. She didn’t like Yang Zhiman at all, feeling like she looked down on people. The way she treated them—Beta employees, no less—was disdainful, and it made her uncomfortable.
“Are you free tonight?” Cheng Wan asked. “I’d like to treat you to dinner.”
“Of course, of course! If you’re treating, I’m always free!” Chang Le perked up. “What are we eating tonight?”
“How about hotpot?”
“Perfect, I’m in!”
The two were still chatting away at their desks when, unexpectedly, they were hit with a barrage of criticism from Yang Zhiman, who accused them of poor performance. As a result, both Cheng Wan and Chang Le had 200 yuan deducted from their salaries.
This made Chang Le furious, her teeth grinding in frustration.
At lunchtime, Bai Juntang came as promised to pick Cheng Wan up for lunch. Cheng Wan ate well, enjoying the dishes Aunt Pei had prepared, but her mood seemed a little off. She ate slowly, clearly lost in thought.
In the afternoon, Cheng Wan found herself swamped with work again. She wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but it felt like her workload was much heavier than everyone else’s.
By the time work ended, she still hadn’t finished everything.
She rubbed her sore shoulders, feeling stiff and uncomfortable from sitting for too long.
“Wan Wan, you’re still not done?” Chang Le rolled her chair over and saw the pile of documents beside Cheng Wan. She scrunched her nose and said, “I’m not finished either, and I don’t feel like working anymore. Let’s go have hotpot! I’ll treat you to milk tea.”
Cheng Wan didn’t feel like working either. She’d been busy all day, and her head was buzzing with exhaustion. She desperately needed to relax.
“Alright, let’s go to the hotpot place we went to last time. I thought it tasted really good,” Cheng Wan said as she started packing up her things. “I’ll take care of the group order.”
“That’s the one with the three-person set, right? That’s the best deal! We’ll have plenty to eat!” Chang Le cheered.
“Sounds good.”
The two of them left the office, and just as they were about to head out, Cheng Wan received a phone call. She pulled out her phone and saw that it was Bai Juntang.
“Oh?” Chang Le noticed, raising an eyebrow. “Is it that pretty lady?”
Cheng Wan nodded without hesitation, not trying to hide anything, and answered the phone.
“Are you off work?” Bai Juntang’s voice came through the phone. Chang Le couldn’t help but cover her mouth and giggle.
Cheng Wan blushed, speaking in a low voice, “Yes, I’m off work. My colleague and I are going out for dinner. What’s up?”
“Come down to the underground parking lot. I’ll drive you there.”
“Drive us?”
Cheng Wan and Chang Le exchanged glances. Cheng Wan asked, “Is that okay?”
“It’s better than you two squeezing onto the bus or subway,” Bai Juntang replied casually. “Come down.”
Cheng Wan ended the call and turned to Chang Le. “She’s waiting in the underground parking lot. She’s going to drive us.”
“Really?!” Chang Le exclaimed. “So we have a driver now!”
Cheng Wan couldn’t help but laugh. Only someone like Chang Le would think of Bai Juntang as their personal chauffeur.
When they reached the underground parking lot, they saw Bai Juntang leaning against her car, on the phone. When she saw Cheng Wan, she waved at her, said something into the phone, and then hung up.
“Hello!” Chang Le greeted excitedly when she saw how good-looking Bai Juntang was. “I’m Cheng Wan’s colleague. We met at the hospital before.”
“Hello,” Bai Juntang smiled warmly. She looked at Chang Le and asked, “Have you two decided where to eat yet?”
“Yep! We’re having hotpot!” Chang Le cheerfully slid into the back seat and continued, “We’ve been there before, and it was really good. We’re going again today, and we’ve already booked the tickets.”
“Sounds good,” Bai Juntang said with a smile. “There are a lot of great places to eat. You two should go out and try more spots like that.”
The car slowly pulled out of the underground parking lot. After Chang Le mentioned the location, Bai Juntang opened the navigation app.
Cheng Wan glanced at the map and said to Bai Juntang, “You should avoid this route. It gets really backed up during rush hour.”
“Okay,” Bai Juntang nodded, then added, “I’ll pick you up at 9:30 tonight. Don’t stay out too late.”
Chang Le teased, “Oh, is there a curfew?”
Cheng Wan’s face turned red. She didn’t know how to respond, so she just nodded in agreement.
Bai Juntang dropped the two of them off at the side of the road. Since she knew Cheng Wan wasn’t entirely comfortable when they were together, she didn’t press her and instead decided to head back to the office to work for a bit. She planned to pick Cheng Wan up later at 9:30.
Chang Le and Cheng Wan quickly found the hotpot restaurant. While waiting for their food, Chang Le smiled brightly and eagerly asked, “Come on, tell me, how did you meet such a beautiful and outstanding woman? What’s her name? She looks so rich!”
“Her name is Bai Juntang. How we met… it’s a little complicated,” Cheng Wan smiled softly. She avoided directly answering Chang Le’s question but said, “She usually doesn’t pick me up. I’m not sure why she did today—maybe it was just on the way.”
“I don’t think that’s it,” Chang Le, munching on some fruit from the restaurant, said thoughtfully. “I think she respects you a lot. She’s not like other Alphas.”
Cheng Wan was curious. “How is she different?”
“Well,” Chang Le explained, “the way she looks at you is different. Usually, only people who care about you look at you like that. And here I am, just a Beta with nothing to offer, yet she’s someone I feel I can’t even look directly at when we meet. But she still greets me and talks to me. She must like you and want to be close to the people around you.”
Chang Le’s constant chatter made Cheng Wan’s heart race, her thoughts running wild.
“So, I think that Miss Bai must really like you. Otherwise, how would you two end up having a baby?”
The conversation paused for a moment when the food arrived, and the topic was left untouched. However, Cheng Wan couldn’t help but keep thinking about it.
Was Chang Le right?
But Bai Juntang taking care of her—wasn’t it because Cheng Wan was carrying her baby?
If not for this baby, Cheng Wan and Bai Juntang would probably have never crossed paths in their lives.
At this thought, Cheng Wan lowered her gaze.
Yes, if it weren’t for the baby, how could someone like her have met someone like Bai Juntang?
Originally, Cheng Wan and Chang Le were enjoying their hotpot, but in the middle of the meal, Cheng Wan received a call from Yang Zhiman, saying there was a mistake in the data, and that Cheng Wan needed to rush home to fix it.
With no choice, the two of them had to quickly finish their meal, and by 8 o’clock, they were preparing to head back.
Chang Le was not happy with how Yang Zhiman had ordered them around, but she didn’t say anything. She just stayed by Cheng Wan’s side, waiting for Bai Juntang’s car.
Bai Juntang arrived quickly. Initially, she planned to drop Chang Le off first and then take Cheng Wan home, but Chang Le said her house was nearby and she could just walk, so she didn’t need a ride.
On the way, Cheng Wan kept her eyes on her phone, replying to messages. Bai Juntang wanted to talk, but seeing that Cheng Wan was busy, she just kept quiet.
When they arrived at the house, Cheng Wan asked Bai Juntang, “Can I use the computer in the study?”
“The desktop in the study isn’t very convenient,” Bai Juntang replied as she took off her coat. “You can use my laptop instead.”
“Are you working late tonight?” Bai Juntang asked, glancing at Cheng Wan.
“Yes,” Cheng Wan nodded. “There’s an error in the data, and I need to fix it tonight.”
Bai Juntang didn’t say anything more. She simply set up the laptop for her and didn’t interfere further.
At first, Bai Juntang thought Cheng Wan would only need to work a bit, but when she came out around midnight, she found Cheng Wan still working in the living room.
The only light in the room came from a single lamp. Cheng Wan seemed to be on a call, and after hanging up, she went right back to working.
Bai Juntang stood on the second floor, frowning as she watched. She usually worked late too, so she understood how exhausting it could be. But Cheng Wan was just a junior employee—why was she still working so late? She couldn’t help but wonder what could possibly keep her so busy at this hour.
Besides, Cheng Wan wasn’t in the best physical condition to be staying up late.
Bai Juntang cleared her throat softly on the second floor, and Cheng Wan instinctively looked up.
“Still not done?” Bai Juntang stood leaning on the railing, speaking gently. “You can’t stay up late right now.”
Cheng Wan hurriedly closed the laptop and said, “It’s all done. I’m going to bed now.”
With that, Cheng Wan began packing up her things, then grabbed her phone and headed to her room.
Bai Juntang looked at the empty living room, feeling the need to remind the general manager of the branch office that while she didn’t mind Cheng Wan working, she strongly disapproved of her staying up late.
