How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 28
The next morning, Bai Juntang woke up.
The air was still filled with a faint scent of pheromones, one that didn’t belong to her. After a moment, Bai Juntang realized it must be Cheng Wan’s scent.
After getting up and washing up, Bai Juntang stepped out of her room and immediately caught the faint fragrance of white peach in the air. Her gaze instinctively followed the scent towards the kitchen.
She saw Cheng Wan, dressed in home clothes and wearing an apron, steaming the dumplings that Aunt Pei had left behind.
“Why are you up so early?” Bai Juntang asked suddenly, making Cheng Wan jump. The lid of the pot she was holding fell back into the pot with a loud noise.
Cheng Wan turned to look at her, replying, “I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’d make breakfast.”
Watching Cheng Wan lift the lid again, she carefully placed a few freshly steamed dumplings into a plate, planning to steam a piece of corn cut into sections next.
The off-white home clothes with the dark apron looked good on Cheng Wan, and her focused expression made Bai Juntang smile.
Because they weren’t wearing pheromone barriers, Bai Juntang could clearly smell the sweet white peach scent of Cheng Wan’s pheromones, and it made her feel a little restless.
She really wanted to walk over, pull Cheng Wan into her arms, and kiss her.
But reason told her that it wasn’t the right time yet.
Once Cheng Wan finished preparing breakfast, she brought it to the table. Bai Juntang had just greeted her before heading upstairs to change clothes. Cheng Wan stood by the stairs, debating whether or not to call Bai Juntang down to eat.
It was seven in the morning, and having breakfast this early seemed a bit much. But if she didn’t eat the freshly made dumplings now, they’d lose their warmth and wouldn’t taste as good.
As Cheng Wan hesitated, Bai Juntang came downstairs in a white suit.
The tailored suit highlighted Bai Juntang’s tall and slender figure, with a half-sleeve shoulder strap design on the upper half of the suit, paired with wide-leg trousers, giving her the appearance of walking down a runway.
Cheng Wan watched as she walked toward her and sat down. After a moment, she asked, “Do you have to go out today?”
“I have to meet with a client and then attend a meeting,” Bai Juntang replied. She picked up a piece of corn and took a bite. “How many days off did you take?”
“I took five days off in total, and I have three days left. I’ll be back to work on Monday.”
“Then just rest at home for these few days. If anything comes up, just call me, and I’ll come back as soon as I can.”
Cheng Wan sat across from Bai Juntang, hesitating before saying, “This morning, my mom called me. She said… she wants me to stay at your house for a while longer.”
Actually, the reason Cheng Wan got up early wasn’t just because she couldn’t sleep in an unfamiliar place, but also because of Xu He’s phone call that had woken her up.
On the phone, Xu He had told her to stay at Bai Juntang’s house.
She said, “You and Bai Juntang are already legally married, and you’re carrying her child. You can easily hold onto her now. Since you’re living in her house, make sure to get her attention. We’re not asking for a wedding, but at least get some of the family inheritance—after all, the Cheng family isn’t just letting her have a child for nothing.”
Cheng Wan listened quietly. She didn’t understand why, after all the days she spent in the hospital, not a single call came from the Cheng family, but when she moved into Bai Juntang’s house, they called her to discuss how to get the inheritance.
She didn’t understand—how could a person be so shameless as to say such things without even flinching?
Cheng Wan had always been the quiet, obedient type, raised to never make a fuss and always say “yes,” even when it came to her own feelings. She had never really been in control of her own heart.
“I still—”
“Since that’s the case, you should just stay here,” Bai Juntang interrupted, gently cutting her off.
Cheng Wan had been about to say that it would be better for her to move out, but Bai Juntang had already casually decided for her to stay.
Bai Juntang took a bite of the breakfast that Cheng Wan had made and said, “Aunt Pei was also saying how much she wants to take care of you. Since you’re going to stay here, let Aunt Pei come over and help.”
Cheng Wan felt a sudden shock. She clutched the corner of her skirt, looking at Bai Juntang with a frown. “I have to go back to work. I don’t want to end up like other Omegas, just staying home to have kids.”
Bai Juntang looked up at her and said, “I never said you should stay home and just have kids.”
She put down her utensils and looked at Cheng Wan, saying, “I won’t restrict your freedom. If you want to work, I won’t stop you. But you must promise that you won’t repeat what happened before. Your safety, and the baby’s, is the most important thing. I hope you understand that.”
Cheng Wan stared at her in a daze.
Bai Juntang continued, “Next Monday, I’ll pick you up and drop you off from work, and I’ll also have lunch with you. You’ve been feeling better since you started getting up early during your pregnancy, so from now on, I’ll make sure to take good care of you. Otherwise, you’ll end up malnourished, just like the baby.”
Cheng Wan blinked and said carefully, “I’ve been eating quite a lot lately.”
“You did eat a lot yesterday, which is great. I hope you can eat just as much today,” Bai Juntang said with a smile. She pushed the plate of breakfast in front of Cheng Wan and added, “If you finish all of this, that would be even better.”
Looking at the breakfast in front of her, it wasn’t that much, but over the past few months, Cheng Wan had been vomiting heavily during her pregnancy’s early stages and hadn’t eaten much for a long time.
“I can only say I’ll try to eat a bit more,” Cheng Wan said, looking up at Bai Juntang. She repeated, “I still have three days of rest, and I’ll go back to work on Monday.”
Bai Juntang seemed unaware, finishing what was on her plate, nodding, and then asking, “Do you want me to come back for lunch?”
Bai Juntang always felt that as long as she was with Cheng Wan, everything would seem more enjoyable.
Cheng Wan shook her head, her eyes firmly fixed on Bai Juntang. “You don’t have to come. There’s food in the fridge; I can cook for myself.”
Bai Juntang didn’t say anything else. She watched Cheng Wan finish her breakfast before gathering her things and leaving the villa.
Cheng Wan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching as the car drove away. It suddenly dawned on her that Bai Juntang really wasn’t going to restrict her work.
She had thought that once she moved in with Bai Juntang, she’d have to give up her job.
After all, in this society, most Omega’s stayed at home to have children. Cheng Wan didn’t want to become like that. She felt that those Omegas were no different from livestock.
Thankfully, Bai Juntang didn’t seem like that kind of alpha.
Although Bai Juntang looked so fierce, she was surprisingly understanding. That was the first little secret Cheng Wan discovered after moving in.
(Later)
The situation at the Dry Valley Club seemed beyond repair. Many areas had already begun their competitions, and the regulation prohibiting Omega participants had only affected Bai Juntang’s club. Other clubs had stopped recruiting Omega athletes a long time ago.
What really frustrated Bai Juntang was that, as soon as she entered her office today, she saw a resignation letter on her desk.
Mu Ruchu had resigned.
Bai Juntang had originally thought that if Mu Ruchu couldn’t become a driver, she could at least be a trainer. If not that, she could manage the club.
But she never expected Mu Ruchu to be so resolute and just resign.
Bai Juntang couldn’t get through to her on the phone, and there was no one at her house. No one could get in touch with her.
The fact that the other party had washed their hands of the situation meant that the Dry Valley Club would likely be cut off from world-class competitions from now on.
Bai Juntang spent the whole morning feeling troubled, but eventually, she came to terms with it.
Why should she make things difficult for herself? She didn’t depend on the club for her livelihood.
The club would just be a small investment from now on, maybe a hobby to play with. It still had a few small endorsements, so it was making some money, albeit not much.
A mosquito’s leg is still meat, after all.
Once Bai Juntang had let go of her frustrations, her mood lightened. She glanced at the clock, realizing it was almost noon, and decided to call Cheng Wan.
The phone picked up quickly, and she could faintly hear the sound of a drama playing in the background.
Bai Juntang smiled as she heard Cheng Wan’s soft voice and couldn’t help but grin. “Has Aunt Pei arrived?”
“Yes,” Cheng Wan replied, sitting on the sofa, eating fruit. She turned to look at Aunt Pei, who was busy cooking. “I thought Aunt Pei wasn’t coming until three days later. Why is she here today? Did you ask her to come over?”
“Yes,” Bai Juntang said, “I wasn’t comfortable with you being home alone, and Aunt Pei wanted to take care of you. So, I had her come. She’ll be staying here from now on, just to keep you company.”
Cheng Wan’s voice softened, “But I don’t need someone to stay with me. I’ll be back to work on Monday. If Aunt Pei stays here, what will her family do?”
“Aunt Pei will arrange it herself. You don’t need to worry about it. She just wants to take care of you.”
“But I’m not at home,” Cheng Wan said, still confused. “If I’m not here, who’s she taking care of?”
Bai Juntang and Cheng Wan chatted, and somehow, Bai Juntang felt like this conversation resembled one between newlyweds. Cheng Wan was playfully complaining to Bai Juntang over the phone, and it was oddly endearing.
“Having someone at home to keep you company makes me feel a little more at ease,” Bai Juntang said softly. “I have business meetings today, so I won’t be home too early tonight.”
“Okay,” Cheng Wan paused, then added, “Just don’t drink too much.”
“Mm.”
After Bai Juntang replied, it seemed like there was nothing else to talk about. Cheng Wan was about to hang up when Bai Juntang spoke again.
“Take a picture of your lunch today and send it to me,” Bai Juntang said. “And the dinner, too.”
Cheng Wan paused for a moment, her face reddening without knowing why. She muttered, “Are you worried I won’t eat properly?”
“Honestly, yes,” Bai Juntang said, being frank. “You always make me feel like you’re not eating enough, so if you send me pictures, I’ll feel better.”
If she could, Bai Juntang would watch Cheng Wan eat. The woman was so thin, barely any flesh on her body, with such a slender waist that Bai Juntang could wrap one arm around it with ease.
Bai Juntang also remembered the kiss they shared in the hospital. Besides the burning passion of their kiss, the thing that stood out the most to her was Cheng Wan’s waist.
She barely had any flesh on her body. How could this be?
Before, when Bai Juntang wasn’t around, she couldn’t monitor Cheng Wan’s eating habits. But now that they were living together, wasn’t it her responsibility to make sure Cheng Wan gained some weight?
Bai Juntang said to her, “I’ll talk to Aunt Pei as well. Both of us will make sure you’re eating properly.”
Cheng Wan probably felt there was no choice but to listen. She really did need to eat more, as per the doctor’s advice. She responded with a soft, reluctant “Mm,” sounding a little upset.
After the phone call ended, Bai Juntang looked at the picture Cheng Wan had sent and felt a bit of longing.
Now she understood why some people felt such a strong pull to go home—because right now, she really wanted to skip work and rush back.
