How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 27
The fluffy little paw was white and clean, with a few visible baby hairs. It reached out from the gap in the sofa, gripping the little green fire-breathing dinosaur on Cheng Wan’s slipper with all its might.
Cheng Wan blinked and bent down to look at the sofa gap, only to meet a small, furry little head.
The little paw stopped moving, and the cat and Cheng Wan locked eyes.
Just as Cheng Wan was about to say something, the little thing swiftly pulled its paw back with a “whoosh” and ran off to the other side of the sofa.
Perhaps it was running too fast, for it slipped and tumbled in a small roll when turning a corner. After that, it disappeared without a trace.
What was that?
Curious, Cheng Wan stood up. She could tell it wasn’t a mouse—based on the size, it seemed like a little kitten.
Did Bai Juntang have a cat?
She had never noticed one before, even though the housekeeper only came once every three days. She hadn’t seen a cat the last time she visited.
Feeling intrigued, Cheng Wan followed the little orange shape around the corner of the stairs and saw the little thing huddled in a corner. It was staring at her with big, round eyes, almost like copper bells.
It was a little orange kitten.
Cheng Wan’s eyes lit up as she looked at it. She slowly crouched down and reached out her hand, signaling for the kitten to come over.
The little kitten, unafraid, twitched its little nose and cautiously approached. It sniffed the tips of Cheng Wan’s fingers and then licked them with its tiny pink tongue.
The scratchy feeling was strange but endearing, and Cheng Wan’s heart melted as the kitten’s tongue touched her fingers. She picked it up and cradled it in her arms. The little thing wasn’t afraid, gazing up at her with a curious expression.
Meanwhile, Bai Juntang and Aunt Pei were tidying up the guest room on the first floor.
Aunt Pei tied the curtains with a rope and said to Bai Juntang, who was sitting on the bed, “Cheng Wan is now over three months pregnant. When she’s further along, it’ll be hard for her to go up and down the stairs. This guest room will be perfect for her. It has its own bathroom, and I’ve already put down a non-slip mat.”
Bai Juntang stroked the soft bedding on the bed. The pink comforter looked particularly gentle. She said lightly, “It’s just that the room is a little small. If we put a wardrobe and the bed, there’s barely space left.”
“A small bedroom has its advantages too. Once the baby is born, she can move upstairs,” Aunt Pei said.
After finishing her work, Aunt Pei wiped down the wardrobe and asked, “Juntang, is Cheng Wan going to stay here until the baby is born?”
Aunt Pei was well aware of the relationship between Bai Juntang and Cheng Wan. In wealthy families, situations like surrogate pregnancies weren’t uncommon. As a housekeeper, she didn’t want to overstep, but she was a bit surprised that such a kind-hearted woman like Mrs. Bai would agree to such a plan.
“She’ll stay here for now,” Bai Juntang replied with a helpless sigh. “We’ll figure out the rest later.”
Just as the two of them were chatting casually, they heard footsteps outside the door. Bai Juntang turned around and saw Cheng Wan standing at the door, holding an orange kitten in her arms.
“I saw a cat in the living room,” Cheng Wan said, looking at Bai Juntang. “I was worried it might run off, so I brought it over.”
“Oh no, how did it get out?” Aunt Pei hurried over, wanting to take the kitten from Cheng Wan’s arms, but Bai Juntang beat her to it and gently cradled the kitten.
The little kitten, completely unafraid, relaxed in Bai Juntang’s arms, swishing its tail and looking up at her with curiosity.
“Do you like it?” Bai Juntang asked, noticing Cheng Wan’s fixed gaze on the kitten.
“Just a few days ago, I saw it while shopping and thought it was so cute, so I bought it. It’s been dewormed and tested for toxoplasmosis—it’s a very healthy kitten,” Bai Juntang explained gently.
The kitten happily flicked its tail and gave a soft “meow.”
It was so cute.
Maybe the kitten was just too adorable, but Cheng Wan couldn’t take her eyes off it. She had always loved cute little things, especially soft, fluffy animals like this one. It was just too irresistible.
Aunt Pei, sensing the moment, quietly stepped out of the room, leaving the space for the two of them.
“I didn’t expect you to like pets too,” Cheng Wan said, looking up at Bai Juntang in surprise. “I thought you wouldn’t care for anything like that.”
Bai Juntang smiled and said, “There are many things I like, and maybe you’ll slowly get to know them over time.”
“Now, let’s take a look at your new bedroom.” Bai Juntang held the kitten in one hand and wrapped her other arm around Cheng Wan. “For now, I’ve only added the basic furniture. The guest room is a bit small, so there isn’t much room for things, but it has its own bathroom, so it’ll be more convenient for you to shower and freshen up.”
Cheng Wan’s gaze fell on the large pink bed. Turning her head, she looked at Bai Juntang and asked, “Did you pick this color?”
Bai Juntang blinked. “It’s pink. Do you not like it?”
Cheng Wan wasn’t sure how to answer. It wasn’t that she disliked it, but it did feel a bit childish. Just like the green dinosaur slippers she was wearing—she didn’t hate them, but she felt like she had outgrown the age for wearing cute things.
The kitten, apparently unhappy, struggled out of Bai Juntang’s arms and jumped onto the bed. It rolled around happily, proving that it liked the bed.
“Thank you,” Cheng Wan said, looking at the room’s setup. “I really like it.”
Bai Juntang smiled, pleased. “I’m glad you like it. It was worth taking the time to pick everything out myself.”
Cheng Wan looked at her with a hint of curiosity. “Wasn’t it just something you picked up on the way?”
Bai Juntang paused, slightly speechless.
With a soft laugh, she quickly changed the subject. “Are you hungry? Let’s go eat.”
For lunch, Aunt Pei made four dishes and a soup, all of which were her specialties. Cheng Wan ate happily, finishing an entire bowl of rice and a big scoop of soup.
For once, she didn’t feel nauseous. Aunt Pei even gave her a box of blueberries afterward, and they were perfectly sweet and tangy.
In the afternoon, Aunt Pei took Cheng Wan for a walk around the villa area to get some fresh air.
Bai Juntang had work to do, so she stayed in her study, making calls, and didn’t come out until the evening.
In the living room, a variety show was playing on the TV, though no one was watching. The kitten, however, had somehow managed to climb onto the sofa and was now lying there like a little adult, watching the show intently.
The delicious smell of food wafted from the kitchen, and Bai Juntang walked over, only to find Cheng Wan and Aunt Pei cooking together.
Cheng Wan appeared to be boiling something while Aunt Pei was slicing vegetables. Occasionally, the two of them would chat, looking very harmonious together.
Bai Juntang cleared her throat softly to announce her presence.
“Aunt Pei, what are you two doing?” Bai Juntang called out, her eyes still on Cheng Wan.
When Cheng Wan turned around, Bai Juntang saw that Cheng Wan was cooking noodles.
“How about we have jjajangmyeon tonight?” Aunt Pei smiled. “We went for a walk this afternoon, and Cheng Wan said she wanted to eat jjajangmyeon, so we bought the ingredients and are making it.”
“Sounds good,” Bai Juntang said, looking at Cheng Wan. “You seem to really like noodles.”
Cheng Wan nodded slightly and replied, “Noodles are easy to make, and they taste really good.”
“Exactly,” Aunt Pei chuckled. “I used to make jjajangmyeon all the time. Madam loved it, but I didn’t make it much after she went abroad. Today, I’m showing you how to make it.”
Bai Juntang leaned against the kitchen doorway, her mouth watering from the smell of the meat sauce. She smiled and said, “It smells amazing.”
The kitchen felt a bit cramped with all three of them in there, so Aunt Pei told the two of them to step outside. She made jjajangmyeon for all three of them, and before leaving, she put some freshly made dumplings in the fridge and reminded Cheng Wan and Bai Juntang to eat them later.
Once Aunt Pei left, the house felt suddenly quiet. Cheng Wan felt a sense of calm wash over her.
She glanced at Bai Juntang and asked, “Is Aunt Pei coming back to work in three days?”
“Yes,” Bai Juntang replied. “It’s rare for Aunt Pei to work an extra shift. Usually, she leaves around four or five in the afternoon, but I think she was just so happy to see you today. She’s been wanting to take care of you…”
Bai Juntang’s eyes lingered on Cheng Wan’s stomach, which was hidden under her clothes, and softly added, “And the baby you’re carrying.”
Cheng Wan froze for a moment, her cheeks turning slightly pink. She avoided looking at Bai Juntang and murmured, “I think I’ll rest for a while.”
“Then sit on the sofa and watch some TV,” Bai Juntang suggested. “You can rest here for the next couple of days. I’ll be upstairs, and if you need anything, just call me.”
Cheng Wan looked up at Bai Juntang’s dark eyes and nodded.
Later, while they were watching TV, the little kitten, who wasn’t afraid of people, came running over again. It seemed especially clingy, sticking close to Cheng Wan and refusing to leave. Eventually, it jumped into her lap, insisting on being held.
What a clingy little kitten.
Cheng Wan smiled, finding it rare to encounter such an affectionate little animal. She couldn’t help but hold it in her arms and gently soothe it. Bai Juntang sat on the sofa next to them, watching with a slight smile, and teasingly said, “This little thing hasn’t been so affectionate with me since I brought it home.”
“It must be because of the scent on me,” Cheng Wan looked up at Bai Juntang and explained. “When an Omega is pregnant, there’s a certain scent that makes small animals more drawn to them. It’s still so young, so it probably hasn’t figured it out yet.”
“Oh?” Bai Juntang looked at the kitten with interest, then glanced back at Cheng Wan. “So, does it think of you as its mom?”
Cheng Wan didn’t answer, but her ears had already begun to turn red.
Bai Juntang enjoyed seeing Cheng Wan blush. It made her feel a little playful, and she couldn’t resist getting up from the sofa. She carefully moved closer, sitting beside Cheng Wan.
Cheng Wan barely noticed as Bai Juntang settled next to her. Bai Juntang extended a hand to gently play with the kitten in Cheng Wan’s arms. With no barriers between them in the house, Cheng Wan could clearly smell the fir wood scent of Bai Juntang’s pheromones.
It was a little overwhelming.
“By the way, it still doesn’t have a name,” Bai Juntang said, looking up at Cheng Wan, her eyes meeting hers.
Cheng Wan’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly turned her head away, softly mumbling, “Mm.”
Bai Juntang looked at her profile and gently asked, “I bought it to give to you, so why don’t you give it a name?”
Name it?
Cheng Wan looked down at the little kitten, which was playing with her sleeve. After thinking for a moment, she said, “How about calling it Guazi?”
After saying it, she looked up at Bai Juntang, unsure, and asked cautiously, “Is that okay?”
“Of course, that’s fine,” Bai Juntang replied with a smile, her eyes lighting up. She reached out and gently touched the kitten’s ear, saying, “From now on, it’ll be called Guazi. It’s a really good name.”
Cheng Wan felt a warm happiness. You see, back at the Cheng family, Xu He never allowed her to have pets, so Cheng Wan never had the chance to raise a little kitten like this.
Maybe it was the lovely atmosphere or how good Cheng Wan felt today, but she couldn’t help but cuddle little Guazi and ask Bai Juntang, “Why did you buy a garden-variety orange cat? I thought someone like you would get a more expensive one.”
“Orange cat?” Bai Juntang looked at her in confusion. “Isn’t this a Jiajianju?”
Cheng Wan blinked. “Jiajian… what?”
Bai Juntang went silent for a moment.
Cheng Wan hesitantly asked, “How much did you spend on this cat?”
Bai Juntang paused, then said, “Eighty-eight thousand.”
Cheng Wan: “…”
Maybe it’s too late, but could we change the name to ‘Bawang’ (meaning ‘Eight Thousand’) instead?
