- Chapter 53 - I Will Stay By Your Side
Early the next morning, Liu Yu was lying beside Lou Qingshuang. Both were prone on the bed, revealing their sexy, porcelain-white backs. Their shoulder blades fanned out like butterfly wings, their lines beautiful and silky, with the “beauty’s groove” along their spines faintly visible.
Liu Yu opened her eyes from her dreams and saw that it was already 9:30 AM. She slowly turned over, resting her hands on Lou Qingshuang, staying by her side as she continued to sleep. The previous three days had been too exhausting; they needed two full days of rest before they could step out of the house.
Resting her head on her hand, Liu Yu watched the sleeping Lou Qingshuang. She looked so soft, beautiful, and tranquil that Liu Yu’s heart melted.
Lou Qingshuang slept until ten o’clock before finally waking up. The soreness and fatigue throughout her body made her reluctant to move. Her crow-feather lashes fluttered open. “What time is it?”
“It’s ten. Do you want to get up?” Liu Yu leaned in and pulled Lou Qingshuang into her arms. Their skin pressed together, and Lou Qingshuang leaned back into her, burying her face against Liu Yu’s chest.
“Let’s get up… I’ll accompany you to the hospital in a bit.” Lou Qingshuang nuzzled against Liu Yu’s embrace before finally sitting up to go wash. She wanted to check on Liu Yu’s treatment progress today. She also needed a little time to pull herself together.
“Go wash up,” Lou Qingshuang patted Liu Yu’s arm. She wrapped herself in a thin quilt and went to get dressed, leaving Liu Yu sitting on the bed, watching her helplessly. After they both got ready, they quietly got into the car and left.
“The internal collapse and inflammation of the gland have stopped. Although there’s no improvement yet, it hasn’t worsened. This is good news.” Shang Qing looked at the values on the report with a face full of joy. This was the first time the collapse had been controlled without the use of medication; it was a cause for celebration.
Shang Qing flipped through the report and checked the area around Liu Yu’s gland again. There was no swelling or adverse symptoms. She retracted her flashlight. “Come back for another checkup after the next heat cycle ends. Things are moving in a good direction now.”
Shang Qing looked at Lou Qingshuang with a grateful smile. “It’s really thanks to you for saving her life. You’ve worked hard.”
Lou Qingshuang, wearing a black off-the-shoulder dress, felt her ears turn crimson upon hearing Shang Qing’s words. For a moment, she didn’t know how to respond.
“Has Bai Wan seen you yet?” Liu Yu spoke up, hitting where it hurt.
Shang Qing instantly withered. Bai Wan hadn’t seen her for a long time. She looked at Liu Yu resentfully. “Hmph, you’re done with the checkup. Get out.”
Liu Yu took Lou Qingshuang’s hand and provocatively spun her around in front of Shang Qing. Even when she waved goodbye, she used the hand with their fingers interlocked. “We’re leaving.”
“Just get lost. Don’t talk to me unless it’s important,” Shang Qing snorted and closed her door, though a relieved smile remained in her eyes. She was happy that Liu Yu had moved past those dark events; she no longer had to worry about Liu Yu dying in her home and waiting for her to perform the autopsy.
With the corners of her mouth upturned, Shang Qing sent a message to Su Hua, who was waiting for news: Everything is heading in a good direction.
That’s good. Our little friend Shang Qing has worked hard, Wang Ya replied using Su Hua’s phone. Only Wang Ya would call Shang Qing a “little friend.” Wang Ya was like a big sister who loved everyone—though, of course, she loved Su Hua, the one who tricked her into bed, the most.
“I don’t know how Su Hua managed to bag Sister Wang. Most likely, Sister saw how pitiful she was and agreed,” Shang Qing muttered with a mix of envy and jealousy.
I’m not working hard; my life is just hard, Shang Qing sent back a crying emoji.
Then I’ll cook for you, Wang Ya immediately replied with affection.
Sister, my patient is here. You keep busy and please don’t cook! Shang Qing finished the reply and quickly tucked her phone away, terrified that Wang Ya would actually cook for her.
As Liu Yu and Lou Qingshuang walked out of Shang Qing’s office hand-in-hand, many people noticed them. Among them was a nurse who had previously seen Liu Yu carrying Lou Qingshuang; her eyes sparkled with excitement. She knew the Chairman liked Miss Lou, even if others didn’t believe it.
Many people at the hospital for checkups also watched them. Quite a few recognized Liu Yu, but the Liu Yu they saw today was a completely different person from the one in their memories.
Among them was Lin Xing, who was there for a physical. She sighed inwardly. It seemed Liu Yu was truly invested in this little Omega. The marriage alliance was completely dead in the water; it was time to choose someone else.
Liu Yu was dressed in a stylish, vibrant blue striped shirt, looking years younger. She carried a charming smile, and the tenderness in her eyes when she looked down to talk to Lou Qingshuang was enough to make anyone swoon.
Lou Qingshuang noticed Lin Xing. Seeing the regret in the other woman’s eyes, Lou Qingshuang smiled and gave a polite nod. Lin Xing raised an eyebrow; it seemed the girl knew her intentions. Then again, how could someone by Liu Yu’s side be simple? Lin Xing didn’t intend to dwell on it, nodded back, and left.
“Who are you looking at?” Liu Yu followed Lou Qingshuang’s gaze but only saw Lin Xing’s back.
Liu Yu smirked. Lin Xing had been trying to set her up with her niece. Liu Yu had already refused; Lin Xing’s niece was just a “vase” meticulously cultivated by the family. Liu Yu had met her once and advised her to study abroad to escape her family’s control and find herself. Now, she was nowhere to be found—rumor had it the Lin family hadn’t been able to locate her for a long time.
“Let’s go and rest,” Liu Yu took Lou Qingshuang’s hand and left through the hospital’s back passage. Her bodyguards and secretary followed closely. Lou Qingshuang was beginning to get used to the large entourage that always accompanied Liu Yu.
“I want to drink coffee,” Lou Qingshuang said, looking at the blue sky, white clouds, and gentle breeze. It was perfect coffee weather.
“Alright.”
The two got into the car and went to the cafe Lou Qingshuang frequented. Liu Yu’s bodyguards sat casually at several tables, giving Liu Yu and Lou Qingshuang their space. Lou Qingshuang facepalmed seeing the cafe had been practically bought out. Luckily, there weren’t many people today, or she might have ended up in the headlines.
She understood why everyone was so cautious; after all, Liu Yu had narrowly escaped an intentional attack abroad recently.
“Never mind. Let’s not eat here. Let’s go home and drink coffee on the sofa,” Lou Qingshuang pulled Liu Yu’s hand, leading her out.
Liu Yu froze, looking at Lou Qingshuang and then at the bodyguards positioned at every defensive corner. She had become like this. She squeezed Lou Qingshuang’s hand, wondering if she could ever get used to it.
As they left, the cafe owner planned to refund the money, but the secretary declined. “This is what you earned. Just keep today’s events private,” the secretary said with a kind but firm smile.
The owner nodded reflexively. “I’ll close up for the day and rest.”
“No need. You can continue business. This was just a small interlude. I wish you a prosperous business,” the secretary finished and left.
Three black SUVs departed one after another. Liu Yu sat in a luxurious, modified Mercedes-Benz G-Class with top-tier safety ratings. Since returning from abroad, her usual vehicles had been replaced by these.
Liu Yu felt a bit uneasy in the car; she had disrupted Lou Qingshuang’s peaceful life.
“From the day I signed the agreement with you, I knew times like this would come,” Lou Qingshuang had been mentally prepared since then.
They looked at each other, Liu Yu’s eyes full of emotion. “Then let’s go back. I’ve had the best coffee sent over.”
“Mhm.” Lou Qingshuang reached out to hold Liu Yu’s hand, leaning her head on Liu Yu’s shoulder and letting out a tired yawn. “I’m a bit sleepy. Wake me when we get there.”
Liu Yu looked down at her face, her expression full of tenderness. In the passenger seat, Luo Xiangxue caught a glimpse and smiled with relief. The Chairman finally knew how to be in love; she looked more like a living person now. Everyone following Liu Yu sincerely hoped she would live a long, happy life. Liu Yu was generous and fair, providing ample benefits and possessing masterful leadership skills.
Liu Yu leaned her head against Lou Qingshuang’s, a smile in her eyes as she watched the trees and pedestrians blur past the window. “I never thought the day would come where I’d be in love,” she whispered, almost inaudibly. She nuzzled Lou Qingshuang’s hair, closing her eyes as she inhaled her scent with satisfaction.
When they arrived home, a barista was already there with equipment and beans to grind fresh coffee. Seeing the beans, Lou Qingshuang didn’t really want a stranger in the house. “Let’s do it ourselves.”
“I’ll make it for you.” Liu Yu turned to the barista. “Shao Ye, you can go. Just leave the beans and the machine.”
“Yes, Chairman,” Shao Ye smiled shyly and left the items.
The bodyguards moved everything into the living room and then quietly retreated. Luo Xiangxue sent Liu Yu a file containing the group’s meeting summaries. “Everything in the group has been normal these past few days. The assistant manager sent some summaries to your email; this one is from today’s meeting.” After finishing, Luo Xiangxue also left to stay on standby in the apartment below.
Liu Yu looked through the documents, checking the group’s status and the reactions of the high-level executives to her attack. Rather than looking for outsiders, she wanted to weed out the restless elements within the company.
Seeing Liu Yu busy, Lou Qingshuang didn’t disturb her. She checked her own company’s latest data and sampling results. Once confirmed, she stopped to rest. She was truly exhausted. She changed into a white nightgown and fell asleep on the bed.
When Liu Yu finished her work and returned, she saw Lou Qingshuang sleeping soundly. She leaned against the doorframe, watching her tenderly for half an hour before reluctantly looking away. Lou Qingshuang had removed her scent blocker, and the air was filled with a comforting pheromone. Liu Yu did the same; when it was just the two of them, these pheromones allowed them to sense each other perfectly.
A gentle warmth flowed through the room.
Liu Yu changed into her silver robe and studied the coffee machine. The roasted beans on the table emitted a rich aroma. She gracefully ground the Panama Geisha beans—light in body with notes of flowers and honey, and a rare, bright acidity. It was perfect for a leisurely afternoon.
Lou Qingshuang woke up to the smell. “The beans smell so good.” She walked over and wrapped her arms around Liu Yu’s waist, watching her pour the coffee into white cups.
“Want a taste?” Liu Yu turned her head to ask.
“Of course.” Lou Qingshuang let go and took the cup. The steam rose from the hot coffee, carrying a faint floral scent. “Is this Geisha?”
“Yes. It’s perfect for this weather.” Liu Yu had also ordered small cakes. The two sat on the spacious silver-gray sofa, Liu Yu’s robe blending perfectly with the upholstery. They picked a movie to watch.
Surprisingly, they chose the heartwarming thriller The Sixth Sense. Watching the protagonist get shot, Lou Qingshuang guessed he would die. As the plot unfolded, she huddled in Liu Yu’s arms whenever things got scary, especially when the little boy was frightened by the ghosts.
Liu Yu held her tight. “Don’t be afraid. We can change it.”
Liu Yu watched as the couple sat together without speaking—the wife acting as if she couldn’t see the husband—and realized the husband was already dead. From Liu Yu’s embrace, Lou Qingshuang peeked at the screen as the man taught the boy how to face the ghosts and live a good life.
When the man finally realized he had died the night of the shooting and said his goodbyes to his wife, the twist and the underlying theme of love elevated the movie.
Lou Qingshuang sat up, wiping a tear from her eye. “It’s been a long time since I’ve watched a movie so quietly.”
“Did the past few days not count?” Liu Yu teased, wiping the tears from her face.
“What do you think?” Lou Qingshuang rolled her eyes, her ears turning red.
Liu Yu laughed softly and pulled her back into her arms. “That was watching a movie too, wasn’t it?”
“Hmph.”
“I will stay by your side,” Liu Yu whispered, kissing Lou Qingshuang’s cheek. Lou Qingshuang looked into her eyes with deep affection and leaned in to kiss Liu Yu’s eyelids.
“I hope you keep your word,” Lou Qingshuang playfully nipped Liu Yu’s nose before letting go.
“I will.” Liu Yu held her tighter, her eyes shining with contentment.
The two stayed at Lou Qingshuang’s house for two days, slowly emerging from their pheromone-induced dependence. Without noticing, Liu Yu’s clothes and belongings had begun to occupy Lou Qingshuang’s home.
“I’ll pick you up after work,” Liu Yu said as she dropped Lou Qingshuang off at the Wanshuang Company building. They were reluctant to let go of each other’s hands.
“Be good. See you tonight.” Lou Qingshuang finally let go, waved, and walked away with a light, elegant stride.
Liu Yu watched her from the car with a smile. Photos of Lou Qingshuang getting out of the car were once again captured by onlookers.
“Let’s go,” Liu Yu instructed the driver to head to the Group headquarters. She hadn’t been there in five days and needed to see how Zhu Yan’s investigation was going.
At Wanshuang, Bai Wan saw her best friend looking radiant after five days off and immediately gave her a gossipy look. “So, sister, how were these five days?” Bai Wan winked.
Lou Qingshuang blushed. “Stop it. I need to go to the lab to check the recent records.” She tried to dodge her friend.
“Haha, come on, tell me!” Bai Wan chased after her.
“What about you and Shang Qing?” Lou Qingshuang used Liu Yu’s ultimate distraction technique.
“Her? She hasn’t talked to me much lately.” The smile on Bai Wan’s face faded.
Lou Qingshuang looked at her in surprise. “I thought you didn’t like her being so clingy?”
“It’s not that I don’t like it. My family is preparing to set me up with someone else. If I continue with her, I’ll only hurt her.” Bai Wan’s eyes held a hint of fragility.
“Are you really going through with an alliance? Wanshuang’s current development is enough for you to break away from your family, Wanwan.” Lou Qingshuang held her hand to give her strength.
“It’s enough, but also not enough.” Bai Wan leaned her head on her friend’s shoulder. “This alliance involves someone crucial to the future of the Bai family.”
“I don’t care about that. I only care about you. You don’t need to lose yourself for an alliance. Break away from them,” Lou Qingshuang said firmly. “Wanshuang has strong momentum. I can develop even more new products to grow the company.”
Watching her friend’s ambitious look, Bai Wan couldn’t help but laugh. She pinched Lou Qingshuang’s cheek. “How about this: let’s ditch Liu Yu and Shang Qing and just marry each other. You’re so good, I can’t bear to let you go.”
“I am still me, and you are still you. If you like Shang Qing, let her come back. Besides, her background isn’t bad either,” Lou Qingshuang noted.
“I don’t want to rely on her. I want to rely on myself—on us—to make Wanshuang a global makeup giant!” Bai Wan threw her arms out, declaring her vision. Passing employees immediately started clapping. “President Bai is right!”
Bai Wan froze in awkwardness, while Lou Qingshuang covered her mouth and laughed. Soon, the whole company was filled with laughter.
“Alright, let’s work hard and we’ll eventually go global.”
“Yes!” A group of young employees cheered before rushing off to work.
Lou Qingshuang stood aside, watching Bai Wan look much more relaxed.
“Don’t worry, I’ve already rejected my old man. Let him go marry off himself!” Bai Wan tossed her hair defiantly.
“Then I’ll go work hard for President Bai.” Lou Qingshuang gave her a hug.
“Go on. Work hard, and I won’t treat you poorly.” Bai Wan patted her back. “Thank you, Shuangshuang. Thank you for staying by my side to start this business back then.”
Wanshuang was her foundation, her confidence to face everything.
