- Chapter 31.1 - Liu Yu, Is Your Room Card Still Valid?
Bai Wan drove at full speed the entire way, even reporting to the traffic police mid-journey. After all, Lou Qingshuang had to rush to the hospital to sign papers for emergency rescue. The speed had to be pushed to the maximum city limit, and through coordination with the traffic police, they obtained a police motorcycle escort.
Sitting in the car, Lou Qingshuang’s face was deathly pale, and her mind flashed through ten thousand kinds of terrible premonitions.
Zhu Yan handled all the follow-up matters to make it convenient for Liu Yu to wait at the hospital.
Many people coming and going in the hospital were customers here, and many stepped forward to greet Liu Yu.
“Is Chairman Liu here for a routine check-up?” a plump male Beta walked over and asked politely.
“I have some business here today, thank you for your concern,” Liu Yu replied with a gentle temperament.
The male Beta was very tactful; after saying a few words, he led his family away for their check-up, guided by a dedicated staff member.
Anxiqiao Hospital was built with an elegant and low-profile aesthetic, filled with greenery. All examination procedures had been optimized to save time for these busy patients.
Bai Wan’s car drove directly to the entrance. Before the car had even come to a full stop, Lou Qingshuang pulled open the door, scrambled out, and ran inside in a panic.
“Liu Yu, where is my mother?” Lou Qingshuang ran up to Liu Yu, panting, and looked at her nervously.
“In the resuscitation room for emergency treatment.”
Upon hearing this, Lou Qingshuang’s whole body went limp. Her blood rushed to her head, and she couldn’t even stand steadily. Liu Yu reached out to support her. “Let’s go, I’ll take you in.”
Lou Qingshuang grabbed Liu Yu’s hand tightly and lifted her head to look at her. “Thank you, thank you. Fortunately, you were here.”
This time, she was truly grateful to Liu Yu. She was thankful that Liu Yu had intervened; if not for Liu Yu’s help, her mother’s rescue would not have been so swift.
To happen to have professional doctors escorting the rescue the whole way—how lucky was that?
Liu Yu looked at her panicked eyes as she struggled to maintain logic and gratitude. Liu Yu reached out and took her into her arms. “You helped me, so naturally I will help you. Don’t be afraid.” Liu Yu patted Lou Qingshuang’s back to calm her down.
Leaning in Liu Yu’s embrace, Lou Qingshuang didn’t reject her for the first time. Instead, she truly leaned against her chest for a few seconds to relieve the weakness in her legs from the fright.
When Bai Wan finished parking and came inside, she saw Lou Qingshuang being held in the arms of the great mogul Liu. Quite a few people were casting secret glances before quickly looking away.
Lou Qingshuang recovered and gave Liu Yu a slight push. “Thank you. I need to go find my mother. Please send me the bill for the ambulance expenses,” Lou Qingshuang said gratefully. She could not bring herself to enjoy the benefits of Liu Yu’s help while simultaneously rejecting her.
Liu Yu nodded and let go of her hand, leading Lou Qingshuang toward the emergency room. Bai Wan also quickly followed, greeting Liu Yu with a stiff and guilty air.
After all, she had just represented Shuangshuang this morning to reject the woman. Now, this person had stepped in with such chivalry and disregard for the past; no matter how Bai Wan thought about it, she felt a bit guilty, especially when facing Liu Yu directly—that aura was terrifying.
The group moved quickly toward the emergency room. When Lou Qingshuang rushed over, she happened to see Aunt Wu waiting outside.
“Aunt Wu, how is my mother?” Lou Qingshuang ran straight over and asked tensely.
“The doctor said it was very timely and didn’t cause serious damage. We really have to thank the neighbor across the way. If it had been delayed even a little longer, it would have been a myocardial infarction,” Aunt Wu muttered repeatedly. It was her first time facing Shen Qiao’s onset, and she had been terrified, fearing she had done something wrong, but Shen Qiao’s illness had come too suddenly.
The Lou family had been going through a series of misfortunes lately, encountering every possible difficulty.
Lou Qingshuang thought to herself once again: maybe she should go to the temples and Daoist shrines to pray.
Since Shen Yue had been cut off directly, perhaps that bad luck would be gone too.
If it really doesn’t work out, I’ll just give in to Liu Yu, Lou Qingshuang thought, lowering her head, while Liu Yu still has some modicum of goodwill toward me.
Lou Qingshuang’s fingertips curled up and felt cold; her mind was in a chaotic mess.
Originally, the time her mother’s body could hold out was almost at its limit, but they had been unable to wait for an artificial heart. She didn’t know how much longer her mother’s heart could last after this episode.
Liu Yu watched Lou Qingshuang guarding the door of the emergency room. She exchanged a few words with the hospital director and then left.
All of Shen Qiao’s subsequent medical reports would be sent directly into her hands.
Lou Qingshuang was still asking Aunt Wu, “Did you tell the doctors everything about mother’s condition?”
“I told them everything, and I gave the medical record book to the doctor as well. The doctor just told me to wait outside,” Aunt Wu said.
“The doctor said the rescue was very timely this time, and the Madam will be fine.” Aunt Wu patted Shuangshuang’s hand. Lou Qingshuang’s lips were white and her whole body was shivering with cold. It clearly wasn’t cold here, yet she was freezing.
Bai Wan and Lou Qingshuang were discussing their next steps together; neither of them noticed that Liu Yu had already departed.
“Today was too close. I will never say Chairman Liu is a ‘malignant fate’ again. She is clearly a great person.” Bai Wan pressed her hands together in thanks to Liu Yu.
By evening, Liu Yu received news from the hospital that Shen Qiao had turned the corner and had been moved to a regular ward for observation and treatment.
Liu Yu held her tablet and clicked open the email, looking at Shen Qiao’s medical report. The treatment recommendation on it suggested replacing the heart with an artificial one.
To her left was another report from an investigation into Lou Qingshuang from two months ago. It contained all of Shen Qiao’s past medical records. The suggestion the doctors had given then was also to replace it with a biological artificial heart, but they were still on the waiting list.
Biological artificial hearts had already been manufactured, but the difficulty of production was high and the price was extremely exorbitant. Replacing one artificial heart could last for almost thirty years; if well-maintained, thirty-five years was completely possible.
No wonder Lou Qingshuang was fighting so hard. The fact that she could hold onto her pride and resist the temptation of the resources Liu Yu herself brought under such circumstances meant she indeed had a lot of backbone.
Liu Yu was more curious about what Lou Qingshuang would do regarding Shen Yue. Shen Yue knew about her family situation yet still chose to betray her; that person truly didn’t deserve to be let off. Liu Yu looked at the information with profound eyes.
Liu Yu sat at home leafing through the reports. She thought Lou Qingshuang would likely come to find her soon.
Liu Yu set the tablet aside and sat at her desk to handle her work.
Under the light, Liu Yu’s fountain pen glided gently. After signing her name, she recalled every scene where Lou Qingshuang had shed tears.
The two times she had stuffed a room card to Lou Qingshuang, Lou Qingshuang had never been so angry that she cried; she had only been indignantly furious.
The first time she cried was for Shen Yue, the second time was still for Shen Yue, and the third time was for her mother.
“Pathetic,” Liu Yu snorted coldly, thinking of the reasons for Lou Qingshuang’s crying. Only regarding the mother’s part did she feel a bit dazed; if she had possessed such conditions back then, perhaps her own mother wouldn’t have died.
Liu Yu’s fingers loosely held the fountain pen as she gazed at the words on the document, stark in black and white. She picked up the pen cap and snapped it shut with a click.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Liu Yu, wearing a thin black sweater, stood up, walked out of the study, and headed toward the door. It should be Lou Qingshuang.
Standing at the door, Lou Qingshuang had been waiting for someone to come out and open it. Her heart was like the cold wind in the corridor, getting colder and colder. She was a mess, her clothes were crumpled, her eyes were red and swollen, and her hair was disheveled.
Lou Qingshuang waited for dozens of seconds. These dozens of seconds felt as long as a lifetime—so long that she thought Liu Yu didn’t intend to open the door. She gripped Liu Yu’s doorknob and couldn’t help but lower her head and weep.
When Liu Yu opened the door, the door was being leaned against from the outside. In that instant, the light and warmth spilling from the crack of the door made Lou Qingshuang feel as if she had returned to the world of the living. The bone-chilling cold was dispelled.
Lou Qingshuang looked at Liu Yu blankly. Liu Yu stood inside the house, only able to see her through the gap, and said softly, “Come in.”
Lou Qingshuang looked at Liu Yu, who was blocking the light, somewhat unable to believe it. She had opened the door.
Liu Yu waited for a moment, but Lou Qingshuang was still staring at her in a daze. She had no choice but to reach out and grab Lou Qingshuang’s wrist. The icy touch made Liu Yu frown.
“Come in first.” With a bit of force, she pulled the woman into the house. Lou Qingshuang, who had been hungry all day, stumbled and fell against her.
Liu Yu’s cold rose fragrance made Lou Qingshuang relax. She leaned in Liu Yu’s embrace and didn’t move.
The two stood together at the entrance. Lou Qingshuang tightly clutched the sweater on Liu Yu’s chest, her forehead leaning against her shoulder. She said nothing, only lightly bumping her head against the shoulder bit by bit.
Liu Yu listened to the heavy breathing, lifted her hand to rest it on the top of Lou Qingshuang’s head, and slid it down with a press. Lou Qingshuang pressed her entire self against Liu Yu’s shoulder and cried out muffledly. Only without light did she feel she could allow herself to cry like that.
Liu Yu held her head, letting her lean against her body. The muffled sobbing sounded like the wailing of a small beast that had lost its mother.
Lou Qingshuang pulled at Liu Yu’s sweater, her whole body shaking as she cried. All the pressure accumulated before erupted at this moment.
With so many things happening, she hadn’t been given a single moment of reprieve. If her mother could survive this time, she would give everything in exchange.
Liu Yu held her, staying there with her to vent her pain.
The sweater on her shoulder, soaked by Lou Qingshuang’s tears and breath, stuck to Liu Yu’s body. Her ears were filled with Lou Qingshuang’s crying, which grew louder and louder as if she wanted to cry out all her grievances.
Liu Yu gently stroked down Lou Qingshuang’s back, comforting her in this gentle manner.
After standing at the door for half an hour, Lou Qingshuang finally let go of Liu Yu’s sweater.
The sweater had been bunched into a ball, wrinkled beyond recognition, but Liu Yu didn’t care.
When Lou Qingshuang lifted her head to look at Liu Yu, her eyes were so swollen they were barely recognizable, and the tip of her nose was red. Her long hair was stuck to her face. Liu Yu’s fingertips wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes, which were rimmed with red.
Liu Yu smoothed the strands of hair off her face, tucking them behind her ears bit by bit, revealing the entire perfect face.
Lou Qingshuang looked up at her focused eyes. There was no sentiment in those eyes; she was just smoothing her hair bit by bit. She was waiting for her to speak her request voluntarily.
This time, Lou Qingshuang discarded her cold arrogance and pride, laying down her dignity. She gazed into those focused eyes and asked softly, “Does the room card Chairman Liu handed over before still count?”
Liu Yu looked into Lou Qingshuang’s eyes. She saw the pleading in those eyes and the pain of discarding her own self. This wasn’t the Lou Qingshuang she wanted.
“I don’t like you being this miserable.” Liu Yu lifted her hand to cover Lou Qingshuang’s eyes. Her palm was brushed by eyelashes and soon became wet.
“I have already spoken to the hospital to arrange a biological artificial heart for your mother. She will be well soon.” Liu Yu’s hand remained over Lou Qingshuang’s eyes. What had initially attracted her was not a Lou Qingshuang like this.
Hearing Liu Yu’s words, Lou Qingshuang’s body shuddered. The joy of seeing light at the end of the tunnel almost made her tremble as she hurriedly pulled Liu Yu’s hand away. “Really?” she asked, confirming it in disbelief, her eyes fixed tightly on Liu Yu.
“Confirmed.” Liu Yu felt the hand being pulled forcefully. Her steady and inclusive gaze gave Lou Qingshuang a powerful sense of security, something she had never seen in Shen Yue.
“Thank you.” The nerves Lou Qingshuang had kept taut all day snapped instantly. Her body swayed and she fell backward, but was caught by Liu Yu. Liu Yu looked at her exhausted face. “Sleep.” With her almost magical voice, Lou Qingshuang fell into a deep sleep almost the moment she lay in her arms. The nerves that had been strained all day relaxed here with Liu Yu.
Liu Yu gently placed Lou Qingshuang on the sofa, took off her coat and shoes, and wrapped her in a cashmere blanket on the sofa, letting her rest well for the night.
Liu Yu sat on the side of the sofa, looking at the tightly furrowed brows of Lou Qingshuang. She clearly hadn’t intended for things to go this way.
