- Chapter 30 - Saving the Mother-in-law
This was the first time Liu Yu had ever stepped into Lou Qingshuang’s home, but she didn’t pay the slightest attention to the house itself. Her gaze fell directly upon the person on the sofa, and her brow furrowed.
Liu Yu strode forward and leaned down to perform an examination. She discovered that the other woman’s breathing was extremely weak; she was in danger of respiratory arrest at any moment.
“The Chairman sent us!” Two doctors, carrying emergency kits, ran in panting. Since the elevator hadn’t arrived yet, they had been forced to run up the stairs.
Liu Yu stepped back to allow the professionals to examine her. The scent of disinfectant clinging to the two doctors eased Wu Yi’s heart considerably. She squatted beside Shen Qiao, wiping away her tears and saying with reddened eyes, “Madam, you must hold on. Shuangshuang will be back soon. She will be so heartbroken if she sees you like this.”
Wu Yi was trying her best to awaken Shen Qiao’s will to live; if a person has something to live for, they will not die.
Bodyguards stood in the center of the living room with a folding gurney, ready to carry her down to the hospital at a moment’s notice. The property management had coordinated the elevators, and a dedicated lift was already waiting.
“Pupils dilated, no reaction, breathing has stopped. Start CPR.” The grim-faced doctor waved her hand, and everyone standing by the sofa backed away.
With both hands interlaced, she performed chest compressions while the other doctor attached the AED to Shen Qiao’s chest to monitor her heart rate. When her colleague gave the signal, she initiated the electric shock. She then held the bag valve mask, squeezing it to deliver air into Shen Qiao’s body.
The atmosphere in the room had become incredibly tense.
“Still no breathing or heartbeat. Continue. Shock again.” The doctor kneeling before Shen Qiao had a very tight expression; after every round of CPR, an electric shock followed.
“Move her onto the gurney immediately. I will continue resuscitation directly on the gurney,” the doctor decided decisively, signaling the bodyguards to come over and coordinate the move.
The long-haired doctor, in her forties, nimbly flipped herself over to kneel straddling Shen Qiao’s body, performing chest compressions over and over again.
The casters rattled loudly against the floor, leaving deep tracks. The elevator doors closed. Lou Qingshuang still hadn’t answered her phone.
Watching Shen Qiao, who had completely lost her heartbeat and breath, Wu Yi’s face turned pale and her mind went blank. She stared at the line representing the heart rate—it remained flat. Tears blurred her vision. How was she supposed to face Shuangshuang? She knew she should remain calm, but she couldn’t manage it at all; her mind was filled with nothing but anxiety and worry.
Liu Yu looked at the bodyguards and instructed them to take care of Wu Yi. She then picked up her phone and personally called the Dean of Anxiqiao Hospital. “Arrange for the best cardiologists and have them on standby. We will arrive in five minutes.”
“The Chairman has already coordinated with the traffic police. They will escort you directly to the hospital. Estimated time: seven minutes,” Lan Dai reported over the phone.
“Too long. Make it five minutes,” Liu Yu said in a cold voice, looking at Shen Qiao’s greyish-white face and feeling how rapidly a life could slip away.
“Understood,” Lan Dai replied, communicating directly with the driver.
Ten seconds later, the group boarded the vehicle and drove out to meet the motorcycle police. The police sirens wailed as they cleared the way, and emergency resuscitation continued inside the vehicle. Liu Yu sat in her modified motorhome, watching the medical monitor beep incessantly. It felt just like the night her mother died; for a moment, Liu Yu felt as if she were sitting in a hospital room where she was all alone.
“Hello? Wu Yi, what’s wrong?” Lou Qingshuang finally picked up the phone. This was because Liu Yu had called Wanshuang’s father directly, who then had Wanshuang go find her in person.
The inside of the vehicle had been like a silent play, but suddenly, this vibrant voice added a burst of color to the entire car.
For an instant, the beeping of the machine caused Liu Yu’s mind to wander, but in the next second, she snapped back to reality. She saw the heart rate line begin to fluctuate, and the flatline alarm stopped.
Hearing Lou Qingshuang’s voice, Wu Yi broke into uncontrollable sobs. Looking at the revived Shen Qiao, she wept with joy. “Shuangshuang, your mother… is being rescued… hurry to the hospital.”
Hearing Wu Yi’s words, Lou Qingshuang’s vision went dark and her legs gave out. She collapsed toward the floor, her hand accidentally knocking a laboratory glass beaker off the table with a loud shatter.
Wanshuang quickly supported her and said urgently, “Shuangshuang, we’re going to the hospital right now!”
“Wu Yi, which hospital are you at?” Lou Qingshuang regained her senses and asked quickly. She was so panicked that her hands were weak and her teeth were chattering. Her heart was contracting rapidly, making a terrifyingly loud thump-thump sound.
Liu Yu took the phone from Wu Yi. “Go to Anxiqiao Hospital,” she said, her voice steady and calm.
“Your mother has regained a bit of consciousness. You can talk to her.” Liu Yu’s calm words caused Lou Qingshuang to cover her mouth and let out a choked sob. “Thank you, thank you, thank you…”
Liu Yu placed the phone next to Shen Qiao’s ear. Shen Qiao’s eyes were vacant and she was still in a daze. She looked at Liu Yu, who walked over and then moved away, and wanted to ask who she was. “Who are you?” she asked indistinctly, then called out weakly, “Shuangshuang, Wu Yi.”
Hearing Shen Qiao’s voice, Lou Qingshuang let out a massive sigh of relief. “Mom, how are you? I’m coming home to be with you right away. I still want to eat the food you cook.” Lou Qingshuang suppressed her crying. “Mom, I only have you.” After saying this, Lou Qingshuang couldn’t help but burst into loud sobs, her tears falling rapidly.
Shen Qiao’s eyes blinked slowly, still looking very confused, but she subconsciously replied, “Okay… you come home for dinner… bring her along.” Shen Qiao looked at Liu Yu standing near her head and pointed weakly with her finger. This girl is really beautiful, Shen Qiao thought muddledly before drifting off again.
Wanshuang immediately took Lou Qingshuang toward Anxiqiao. Anxiqiao was a top-tier hospital in Lu City, serving a clientele that was exclusively rich and powerful. The doctors there were all top-tier technicians; it was one of the premier medical facilities in the city and also one of Liu Yu’s properties.
Listening to her voice, a slight smile appeared on Liu Yu’s face.
This auntie was truly like her daughter—both of them liked looking at beautiful people. Even when she had nearly fainted, she still wanted to take a look.
With the police sirens blaring, Liu Yu’s motorhome sped toward the hospital. Five minutes later, the vehicle arrived at Anxiqiao perfectly smoothly.
A group of doctors and nurses pushed a gurney out. The lead doctor first consulted with the two doctors who had provided emergency care to Shen Qiao, while simultaneously pushing her toward the emergency room.
Liu Yu did not follow them inside. She stepped aside to let the doctors work and took the opportunity to chat with the administrator who had rushed over.
“Use every resource to save her,” Liu Yu said to the white-haired elderly woman.
“Understood. I’ll see to it,” the elderly Omega woman replied with a serious expression. She was an extremely excellent doctor and leader, and her actions were crisp and efficient.
Dean Lin left as soon as she finished speaking, having no intention of staying for small talk.
Liu Yu didn’t mind. For those working under her, being able to socialize or engage in pleasantries wasn’t important; what mattered was the ability to complete the tasks she assigned.
A bodyguard behind Liu Yu draped an overcoat over her to keep out the cold. She waited at the entrance for Lou Qingshuang. Wu Yi had already composed herself and followed the doctors, muttering as she went, “I’m so unprofessional, how could I cry? So unprofessional… Madam, hang in there, Shuangshuang will be here soon.”
Listening to her rambling, Liu Yu withdrew her gaze. Wu Yi had been holding Shen Qiao’s hand and staying by her side the entire time.
Liu Yu stood at the entrance waiting for Lou Qingshuang. At this moment, she knew that Lou Qingshuang would soon be very close to her.
