- Chapter 29 - Lou Qingshuang’s Mother Is in Trouble; Liu Yu Saves the Day
Before the morning had even passed, Zhu Yan returned with the gift Liu Yu had sent out. It was returned by Bai Wan in person, who said both tactfully and bluntly, “Thank you for Chairman Liu’s kind regard. Our Wanshuang is not considering personal matters for the time being. We truly cannot climb high enough for this banquet; our status and position have not reached that level yet. My thanks to Assistant Zhu.”
Looking at the girl before her—who was neither humble nor overbearing, yet wore a somewhat fake smile—Zhu Yan couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. As expected of the eldest miss of the Bai family, she had the confidence to be so direct and decisive in her refusal.
“Chairman Liu, Miss Lou declined. The box wasn’t even opened.” Zhu Yan carefully placed the box on the coffee table; the items inside were worth approximately five million.
Holding a royal blue fountain pen, Liu Yu looked up from a stack of documents. Behind her rimless glasses, her expression was indifferent, not yet having detached from her work state. She frowned slightly. “She doesn’t like it?”
Zhu Yan crossed her hands in front of her, leaning forward with a smile. “That’s not it. Miss Lou simply refused. She said she couldn’t ‘climb high enough’ for this banquet.”
Liu Yu put down her pen, sat up straight, and looked at her with a sharp gaze. She asked in a deep voice, “Were those Lou Qingshuang’s original words?”
“No, that’s what the messenger, Ms. Bai, said,” Zhu Yan answered matter-of-factly, taking the opportunity to drop a subtle complaint about Bai Wan.
“Her, then. Those words aren’t credible. At most, Lou Qingshuang just wants to reject me.” Liu Yu was already used to it. She picked up her fountain pen, waved her hand at Zhu Yan, and lowered her head to continue her work.
Zhu Yan nodded and quietly left. The gift remained on the coffee table; she would come back for it when Liu Yu decided how to handle it.
After reviewing the documents and signing them with her name and seal, Liu Yu looked up at the lonely box on the table. A low murmur escaped her throat: “Lou Qingshuang.”
Outside the vast glass window behind her, the sky was boundless and unobstructed, with clouds rolling by. Liu Yu took out her phone and sent a message directly to Lou Qingshuang: See you tonight.
Liu Yu’s eyes narrowed. She was just that domineering. Since you won’t accept the gift, I will deliver it myself.
When Lou Qingshuang took a break from the lab, she saw the message. She was so helpless she wanted to press her hand to her forehead. At a glance, she saw Liu Yu’s subtext: If you don’t want it, I’ll bring it to your door.
Lou Qingshuang leaned against the lab bench. The cold touch of the surface helped her regain some focus and rationality. After thinking for a moment, she began typing back to Liu Yu: Thank you for Chairman Liu’s kindness, but I do not enjoy social engagements. Fearing Liu Yu wouldn’t understand, she used the most direct language possible.
Seeing the message, Liu Yu replied: Is that so?
Yes! Lou Qingshuang pressed the screen forcefully. She didn’t know why, but every time she chatted with Liu Yu, her emotions fluctuated wildly. She just wanted to have a showdown with her!
Then I’ll see you tonight. Liu Yu sent another message.
Lou Qingshuang was speechless.
I’ll wait for you at your door tonight, Liu Yu sent one last message and went back to work.
Lou Qingshuang stared at the message. “Why won’t this person listen?” She bit her lip in distress, but a trace of a smile she hadn’t noticed appeared on her face. The gloom and coldness about her had dissipated significantly.
When her lab assistant came in, he saw a Lou Qingshuang who looked relaxed yet slightly troubled while pondering how to reply. He teased lightly, “Did Director Lou encounter something interesting?”
“No, I’m replying to someone who has no sense,” Lou Qingshuang snorted and put away her phone, deciding that what the eye doesn’t see, the heart doesn’t grieve over.
Fan Ye was a bit surprised. Would Director Lou actually reply to someone with “no sense”? He had always thought she was a purely rational and aloof person; he hadn’t expected her to joke with others.
He could clearly feel that the low-pressure surrounding Lou Qingshuang all morning had lightened considerably. It proved that the person had at least made the Director happy.
Seeing Lou Qingshuang return to her experiment, Fan Ye was also quite pleased. When the boss wasn’t in a bad mood, the lab work was easier to do. No one wanted to work under a boss’s dark cloud.
Lou Qingshuang was still thinking about how to reject Liu Yu with sound reasoning. She was simply too self-willed! And yet, she couldn’t exactly scold her.
While Lou Qingshuang was mentally rehearsing how to make Liu Yu understand, Liu Yu had already finished work. She was leaving the group this afternoon to return to her residence to rest and replenish her physical energy.
Back home, Liu Yu changed into comfortable loungewear. The indoor lights automatically adjusted to the dusk outside, making the atmosphere cozy without being harsh.
Exhausted, she lay on the spacious sofa, covered with a cashmere blanket—the same one Lou Qingshuang had once used. Liu Yu closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep.
Her long hair lay across the soft pillow. The living room was quiet and comfortable when, suddenly, frantic sounds erupted outside the door.
It sounded like someone had fallen.
Liu Yu heard voices in her sleep. She frowned and opened her eyes; there were indeed faint sounds coming from the hallway.
She sat up, and remembering who lived across from her, she threw off the blanket, put on her shoes, and walked out. Upon opening the door, she saw a panicked Aunt Wu trembling while trying to make a phone call.
“Wanshuang, pick up the phone!” Aunt Wu was terrified, calling Lou Qingshuang repeatedly.
Aunt Wu’s face had turned pale with fear. The Madam was unconscious, and she was terrified it was an acute myocardial infarction—that could be fatal!
At the thought of this, Aunt Wu burst into tears. She had to try her best to suppress her emotions while seeking help from property management and the hospital, all while trying to notify Lou Qingshuang.
“What happened?” Liu Yu’s steady, powerful voice rang out in the corridor.
Hearing the voice, Aunt Wu turned and saw Liu Yu. Her breathing hitched instinctively. Liu Yu’s gaze was calm and authoritative, which made Aunt Wu feel less panicked. She blurted out, “The Madam fainted. The ambulance won’t be here for half an hour!”
“Take me in to see her.” Liu Yu walked out of her doorway and headed toward Lou Qingshuang’s home.
Aunt Wu stood dazed by the elevator until Liu Yu had almost passed her. Only then did she snap out of it.
“Does she have a pre-existing condition?” Liu Yu asked coldly.
Aunt Wu hurried to catch up. “Yes, yes, the Madam has heart disease. It’s always been managed well, but today she just collapsed. I’m afraid it’s a heart attack.” As she spoke, Aunt Wu wiped her tears, her body shivering in the cold air.
Liu Yu immediately summoned her bodyguards and a doctor. “Dr. Zhao, come up and check her first. The rest of you, arrange a vehicle; as soon as the doctor is finished, we send her to the hospital.”
Liu Yu settled everything in a single sentence.
“Yes, Chairman. Your emergency vehicle has been started and is ready to go at any time,” the security captain called to report.
The hospital was already being contacted; they were just waiting for the patient to be sent over.
Meanwhile, Lou Qingshuang was so immersed in her experiment that she missed over twenty calls. The phone screen lit up silently and went dark, over and over again.
