- Chapter 28 - Liu Yu is Playing for Keeps
Two days later, Liu Yu ventured out again. Standing by the elevator, she greeted Lou Qingshuang, “Good morning.”
Lou Qingshuang looked at her eyes, which had regained their spirit, and replied, “Good morning.”
The several of them rode down to the garage in silence. Sitting in the car, Liu Yu listened to Zhu Yan’s report.
“There are no major issues with the group; everything is proceeding according to the normal workflow. Important documents have been placed in your office. Regarding the issues with the Lan Dai Company, we have begun taking action according to your instructions. However,… will this frighten Miss Lou?” Zhu Yan offered her suggestion with a hint of hesitation.
As Liu Yu’s assistant, Zhu Yan needed to provide appropriate advice at the right time, whether regarding work or life.
Liu Yu closed the document in her hand and looked up at Zhu Yan. “I have already spent a lot of time and energy on her. I don’t want to waste any more time.”
Zhu Yan nodded, understanding the Chairman’s meaning: the current progress was too slow, and the Chairman intended to accelerate the pace.
“Do I need to inform the Bai family?” Zhu Yan asked.
“No need. I actually quite enjoy her helplessness—the way she doesn’t want to get close but has no choice but to do so,” Liu Yu said, her eyes filled with satisfaction and deep meaning.
Zhu Yan turned away silently, feeling that the Chairman had become somewhat twisted after being tormented by her heat cycle.
“Miss Shang Qing has invited you to dinner,” Zhu Yan reported Liu Yu’s schedule, waiting to see how she would adjust her itinerary.
“Fine,” Liu Yu replied, continuing to look through her documents.
“Miss Shang Qing scheduled it for seven o’clock at the Bamboo Shadow Bistro,” Zhu Yan said.
“Agreed,” Liu Yu consented.
Zhu Yan took her phone and began replying to the messages on Liu Yu’s behalf. Finally, Shang Qing sent back a single sentence: Zhu Yan, stop replying for her. Does she not have hands?
As soon as Shang Qing saw the replies, she knew the assistant was typing them. After venting her frustration, she felt much better. Looking at the message Shang Qing sent back, Zhu Yan silently handed the tablet to Liu Yu.
Liu Yu took her phone, let out a soft chuckle, and pressed the voice message button. “I’ll see you tonight.”
When Shang Qing heard that Liu Yu had proactively replied, she tapped the message. The sound of that voice—deep and resonant like a cello’s bass—sent shivers down her spine.
“This woman’s voice is really becoming something even an Alpha can’t handle,” Shang Qing grumbled privately, absolutely refusing to admit she wished she had a voice like that herself.
“At least you know what’s good for you,” Shang Qing sent back a huffing voice message.
Liu Yu smiled at the audio. Shang Qing was a good friend from her university days. Thinking about it, they hadn’t seen each other in quite a while.
Lou Qingshuang also drove to her own company. Her daily life was usually very peaceful.
Except for her encounters with Liu Yu, which were not only tumultuous but had also exposed the traitors around her. If it weren’t for the fact that it was impossible for Shen Yue to team up with Liu Yu, Lou Qingshuang would have thought Shen Yue was an agent planted by her.
“Shuangshuang, Chairman Liu sent you a gift.” Bai Wan walked over with an odd expression, holding an invitation.
“Why didn’t she say anything when she left this morning?” Lou Qingshuang frowned as she picked up the invitation. Beside it sat a very expensive-looking box.
Bai Wan watched her friend’s familiar, grumbling tone with shock. It seemed something had quietly happened between them that she didn’t know about.
“This is for Lady Elsa’s jewelry banquet. Not many people attend; there are strict threshold and status requirements. Liu Yu invited you as her female companion. Are you going?” Bai Wan asked with concern.
Once Lou Qingshuang appeared as Liu Yu’s companion, she would effectively be “marked” in the eyes of the public as one of Liu Yu’s people. Since she didn’t work at the Liu Group and wasn’t Liu Yu’s assistant, there would be no excuse to hide behind. People would certainly begin to investigate Lou Qingshuang’s identity.
Lou Qingshuang looked at the extremely exquisite, handwritten invitation in her hand. It bore her name, the time of the event, and a black-gold card for identity verification. With this card, she could directly enter the circles of the true elite. But for their small company, such a banquet was meaningless.
“I’m not going.” Lou Qingshuang suppressed the trepidation in her heart. She put the invitation back on the box and said to the worried Bai Wan, “I know you have your ways. Please return these things.”
Bai Wan looked at her friend anxiously. “Liu Yu seems to be playing for keeps, Shuangshuang.”
“Did something happen between you two these past few days?” Bai Wan asked gloomily.
Lou Qingshuang bit her red lip, her eyes flickering. Her eyelashes, like raven feathers, fluttered with unease and regret.
“I made a deal with Liu Yu. She protects Wanshuang, and I… I comforted her during her heat,” Lou Qingshuang said, turning her head to look out the window. Her earlobes were flushed crimson as she spoke, and the redness spread across her neck, partially hidden by her long, wavy hair parted over her shoulders.
“It didn’t have to come to that!” Bai Wan slapped her own forehead. “Doing that is just walking into the tiger’s den. Do you really expect the tiger to let go?”
Bai Wan bit her knuckle anxiously, trying to think of a way to help Lou Qingshuang escape Liu Yu’s grasp. Although she talked tough, she understood the people in that circle all too well—they rarely had genuine feelings.
The Bai family was also part of that circle, but Bai Wan had moved out to start her own business specifically to escape the marriage her parents had arranged.
“Chairman, the clothes and invitation have been delivered to Miss Lou,” Liu Yu’s secretary said, bowing slightly with respect.
“Good. Thank you for your hard work.” Liu Yu nodded and, with a cold expression, boarded her private elevator to go up.
A crowd followed behind her. Many group employees stopped when they saw her to let her pass first. “Good morning, Chairman Liu.” People greeted her constantly.
“Good morning to you too,” Liu Yu replied to each one.
Upon reaching her spacious office, she began her work. This entire floor belonged to her, her assistants, her secretarial team, and her bodyguards.
Liu Yu glanced at her phone to look at the evening gown, jewelry, and shoes she had selected for Lou Qingshuang. A knowing smile played on her lips. Lou Qingshuang would surely love this thank-you gift.
She had no idea that Lou Qingshuang hadn’t even opened the box, let alone seen the items she had so meticulously chosen.
