Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 51
As soon as they reached the room, Shi Wangui locked the door. She pulled her mother’s belongings from the deepest corner of the cabinet and whispered, “This is what my mother left me. When we go back, we’ll each put half in our backpacks and sneak them to your house.”
“Alright,” Wen Youren said. “Keep your half locked up when we get there.”
Snow was still falling outside. Shi Wangui couldn’t shake a strange feeling. Shi Qin had suddenly called them back, her aunt and uncle were present, and they were all going out for dinner. In the past, her aunt never brought her uncle to eat with Shi Wangui because he didn’t like her.
“Why do you think they’re taking us to dinner tonight?” Shi Wangui asked. “Is it possible they’re planning to fly the coop together?”
“Then we’ll fly the coop together too,” Wen Youren replied.
“Agreed.”
Shi Qin chose a restaurant owned by his company. The private booth was elegant and, most importantly, quiet.
Seeing Shi Wangui and Wen Youren sitting together, her aunt pulled her into a side room. “I see you and Wen Youren are getting along well, but you still need to be careful. Even if you hate your father, you have to think about your future.”
Shi Wangui knew her aunt used to dislike the pair, just as she once had. “Auntie, my grades are in the top twenty of my class now.”
Her aunt froze, then smiled. “Wangui, you really are smart. When your grades were plummeting, I thought about asking your father to send you abroad. Now, it seems I don’t have to worry.”
“Auntie,” Shi Wangui said with a smile, “Wen Youren is the one who tutored me.”
Her aunt looked even more stunned. She opened her mouth to speak but simply stared at Shi Wangui, lost in thought.
“Auntie, you can hate her mother, but you can’t hate her.”
Her aunt laughed. “If Wangui likes her, she can’t be bad. How could I hate her? Come, let’s eat. Your uncle and father are partnering with a friend on a business deal. This dinner is a family celebration. Just eat; ignore whatever they say.”
Shi Wangui felt a bit anxious. She wanted to tell her aunt directly that she liked Wen Youren, but she feared her aunt wouldn’t be able to accept it yet. “Auntie, if I liked someone you all thought I shouldn’t, would you support me?”
“There is no one I think you shouldn’t like. Whoever you choose, I’ll support you.” Her aunt squeezed Shi Wangui’s hand, then took a jade bracelet off her own wrist and slipped it onto the girl’s. “Jewelry looks good on young girls.”
“Thank you, Auntie.”
“Let’s go eat.”
The dining table was large—one of the few things Shi Wangui appreciated about the room. The adults sat on one side, and the children sat on the other. The distance between them was significant, allowing each group to mind their own business.
When Shi Wangui returned, Wen Youren asked, “Why so happy?”
Shi Wangui shook her wrist to show the jade bracelet. “Auntie gave it to me. We’ll put it away together tonight.”
“Little treasure-seeker,” Wen Youren teased.
Shi Wangui pouted. “I am a treasure-seeker, so you have to provide for me.”
“I’ll provide for you well.”
Ever since the first time she saw Shi Wangui nearly burn the kitchen down, Wen Youren had planned to take care of her. Not just “keeping her fed,” but ensuring she could eat whatever she wanted and buy whatever she desired.
Five minutes later, a middle-aged couple arrived, followed by a young man who looked like a university freshman.
The woman appeared to be around Wen Yiyue’s age but had a very refined air. She wore a white coat over a matching long dress, with black wavy hair. Time hadn’t touched the corners of her eyes, and her light makeup made her look exceptionally gentle.
“President Shi, I’m so sorry. We had to pick up our son; we’re a few minutes late,” the man said politely.
Shi Qin and her uncle stood up immediately. “President Wang, not at all! We just arrived. This must be your wife? It’s been years; you haven’t changed a bit.”
From the conversation, Shi Wangui gathered that this man held a higher status than Shi Qin. The business deal her aunt mentioned likely revolved around him. However, it meant nothing to Shi Wangui; soon, she would be leaving Shi Qin forever.
President Wang laughed and gestured to the young man. “This is my son, Wang Qingzhu. He just returned from abroad this year. I don’t think you’ve met him.”
Wang Qingzhu said politely, “Hello, Uncles.”
Shi Qin responded, “Hello! A fine young man indeed. These are my daughters, Shi Wangui and Wen Youren. Come say hello to your Uncle Wang.”
Shi Wangui didn’t want to get up, but her aunt kept shooting her looks. Resigned, she and Wen Youren said in unison, “Hello, Uncle Wang.”
Uncle Wang’s gaze lingered on Shi Wangui for a long time. He chuckled and moved back to talk with Shi Qin.
Shi Wangui wasn’t oblivious. She noticed the lingering stare. “That old man was staring at me,” she whispered, displeased.
“Next time you see him, sit on the inside of the booth,” Wen Youren said. “I won’t let him look.”
“Deal!”
Shi Wangui hated the gaze of men, especially the calculating look of middle-aged “uncles.”
She couldn’t stop thinking about that look; it felt wrong. While the adults were chatting, she pulled Wen Youren up to the roof. Feeling the cold wind helped her mood improve.
“Are you worried your father wants to set you up with Wang Qingzhu?” Wen Youren asked.
“How are you so smart?” Shi Wangui tilted her head. “Would you give up on our relationship because of a few setbacks?”
“Never. Not unless I die.”
Shi Wangui immediately covered her mouth. “Psh! Don’t say such unlucky things. You’re the one who told me not to!”
Since Wang Qingzhu appeared, Shi Wangui had been piecing it together. Shi Qin usually wouldn’t bring them to these things. Bringing her and her aunt, while President Wang asked about her age, suggested she was being used as a pawn for his business interests.
“We should run early,” Shi Wangui said. “We’ll run the moment we turn eighteen. We won’t finish twelfth grade; we’ll hide and take the entrance exams as independent candidates.”
“I support every decision you make,” Wen Youren said. “I’ll take you away and give you a better life.”
Shi Wangui smiled. “I believe you.”
After getting home, Shi Wangui’s suspicions were confirmed when Shi Qin asked what she thought of Wang Qingzhu.
Shi Wangui spoke honestly: “Ugly, short, stupid, late, rude. Not interested.”
In reality, Wang Qingzhu was quite handsome by most standards, but in Shi Wangui’s mind, she and Wen Youren were the only ones at the top. A man’s charm came from a woman’s imagination, and Shi Wangui had none to spare for men.
Shi Qin told her to get out, so she “rolled” back to her room—or rather, back to Wen Youren’s room.
“I knew that old man was up to no good. He just asked me how I felt about that guy. How could I feel anything? I like girls.” As soon as she saw Wen Youren, Shi Wangui sat on her lap and began to complain.
Wen Youren chuckled. “Shall I take you away tonight?”
“Yes!”
Wen Youren laughed again, but Shi Wangui stared at her, reaching out to touch her eyes. “I realized you have single eyelids. No, wait—they’re hooded.”
“What about them?”
Shi Wangui jumped up, ran mysteriously back to her own room, and returned with her backpack. She rummaged through it and pulled out a thin strip of tape. “Double eyelid tape!”
Wen Youren was confused. Shi Wangui’s eyes were already large; why would she buy such a thing? “Do you use that?”
“Of course not!” Shi Wangui blinked her big eyes. “Do I look like I need it?”
“No,” Wen Youren admitted.
“It’s Sun Yi’s. I took it out of curiosity when she was doing her makeup,” Shi Wangui explained.
“Doesn’t Sun Yi already have double eyelids?” Wen Youren asked.
Silence filled the room.
Shi Wangui slapped the tape onto the desk, crossed her arms, and stared out the window. Even though she was still sitting on Wen Youren’s lap, she leaned away, though their breathing was still audible to each other.
She was angry!
Why did Wen Youren remember that Sun Yi had double eyelids? Why!
Three seconds. If she didn’t apologize now, she was leaving.
One.
“What’s wrong?” Wen Youren asked.
That didn’t count as an apology. Two.
“I was wrong,” Wen Youren said.
Fine. Forgiven.
“You actually noticed Sun Yi has double eyelids!” Shi Wangui huffed.
Wen Youren laughed helplessly. “We eat together every day. I also remember that Wang Hu has double eyelids.”
“Oh,” Shi Wangui realized. “So, you’re the only one with single eyelids?”
She sat up straight and picked up the tape. “Don’t move. I’m going to give you double eyelids. I’m a pro at this; my skills are unparalleled.”
She had never actually tried it, but she had watched Sun Yi do it many times and assumed she was an expert. Wen Youren sat perfectly still, closing her eyes and letting her work.
When Shi Wangui told her she could open them, Wen Youren felt a strange resistance. She struggled to open her eyes, only to hear Shi Wangui burst out laughing.
“Hahaha! Why do other people get ‘Katy Perry’ eyes, but you just look weird? Although, you do look a lot gentler.”
“It feels uncomfortable, A-Wan. Take it off for me.”
“Okay.”
Shi Wangui leaned down to gently peel the tape off. Just as her hand touched the eyelid, Wen Youren lightly kissed her cheek.
Even though they had been together for a while, they rarely had physical contact. That kiss immediately brought back memories of the previous night.
She felt shy. Her fingers lingered as she slowly peeled the tape away. “You’re too much!” she whispered.
