Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 52
One month later.
The students finished their final exams and welcomed their winter break.
Tenth graders were the first to be dismissed. This year, due to the weather, the school decided not to hand out report cards directly. Instead, they came up with a more ruthless method: parents were required to accompany students on the first day of the next semester. If the winter break homework was completed well, the report card would be given to the student privately. If the work was half-hearted, the report card would be handed directly to the parent.
This method was primarily aimed at the struggling students; top students generally wouldn’t neglect their studies even during a break.
“How annoying,” Shi Wangui grumbled, tossing her winter homework onto the desk after hearing the rule. “Why do we have to bring a parent? Can’t I just not have a parent?”
Wen Youren replied, “It’s fine. We’ll call Teacher Wang.”
“Genius! Why didn’t I think of that?” Shi Wangui said in surprise. “As expected of my girlfriend, your brain is just better.”
At the mention of the word “girlfriend,” Wen Youren blushed. She found it strange: usually, people get more comfortable the longer they date, but they seemed to be getting more shy. They used to only blush when kissing, but now even holding hands made her turn beet red.
Although the two had returned to school, they still went for tutoring every Saturday. Teacher Wang was strict, but she truly cared for them.
Sun Yi turned around at that moment. “Wanwan, where are you guys spending the winter break?”
“Back in the village, of course. Those two went abroad; they’re busy with their careers lately and even gave Wen Youren some allowance,” Shi Wangui said happily.
In previous years, she had to follow her aunt and other adults to pay New Year greetings. Some adults didn’t even want to acknowledge them, but she had to do it for the sake of tradition—and the red envelopes.
“So you two are moving back in together?” Sun Yi shook her head. “Do you know what kind of vibe you give off?”
“What kind of vibe?” Shi Wangui asked.
“You’re too pure. I constantly forget you’re a couple and treat you like sisters instead. When are you going to show me some intense passion? I want to see it,” Sun Yi teased.
Shi Wangui: “…” Wen Youren: “…”
Doesn’t everyone date like this? They were only sixteen, after all—this was “early love.” They were already doing better than some young couples who acted like enemies in front of people they knew.
But they wouldn’t do that. They would just act like family.
Wang Hu suddenly asked, “Can we come with you? That way we can go to tutoring and study together. It’ll be more fun with more company.”
Everyone agreed to the proposal immediately. More people meant more joy and more entertainment.
Sun Yi: “I’m going back to pack my bags right now!” Wang Hu: “Me too!”
Once they had a goal, their packing speed increased significantly. Before long, they vanished from the classroom with their backpacks.
As soon as they left, Wen Youren reached out her hand. “Let’s go. We should head back and pack too.”
Shi Wangui took her hand naturally. “Okay.”
There weren’t many students left on campus. It had snowed a few days ago, and some snow still lingered on the ground. Eleventh-grade students on cleaning duty were clearing the paths. Some mischievous students were throwing snowballs; one went wide and happened to hit Shi Wangui.
Wen Youren brushed the snow off her and took her hand, blowing gentle breaths of warm air on it. “Are you cold?”
Shi Wangui whispered, “I’m okay.”
“Sorry over there! We didn’t mean to hit you!” the boy who threw the snowball called out.
“It’s fine,” Shi Wangui replied, then turned back to Wen Youren. “Let’s go.”
Back at the dorm, Shi Wangui packed some basic clothes and heavy coats, then stood at the school gate with Wen Youren to wait for Sun Yi and Wang Hu.
Their parents had all agreed to the plan. Over the past few months, everyone’s grades had improved drastically. If Teacher Wang hadn’t refused payment, Wang Hu’s parents would have sent a massive red envelope her way.
Hearing they were leaving that evening, Wang Hu’s mother took some time off work to drive the kids there herself and pay a visit to Teacher Wang.
“Wanwan, over here!” Sun Yi poked her head out of the back window, waving vigorously.
As soon as Wang Hu’s mother saw the girls, she praised them, “You two are so lovely! One is beautiful and the other is so handsome. How are your parents so lucky?”
Since Shi Wangui and Wen Youren’s relationship had improved, Wang Hu hadn’t told his parents they were from a blended family; he just said they were sisters.
“You’re beautiful too, Auntie,” Shi Wangui said. Wen Youren gave a soft smile.
The compliment from the girls delighted Wang Hu’s mother. “You three girls are so outstanding. I always wanted a daughter, but I ended up with a son.” She glanced at Wang Hu and let out a soul-piercing sigh. “Sigh.”
Wang Hu, in the passenger seat, was not pleased. “Mom, what’s that supposed to mean? Are you embarrassed of me?”
His mother rolled her eyes, got out of the car, and put their luggage in the trunk. The trunk was already packed with snacks, fruit, and milk, all prepared for the kids.
Shi Wangui and the others got in. As soon as they sat down, Sun Yi raised an eyebrow and showed Shi Wangui her WeChat balance with a suppressed smile. It was a large amount; her family had given her an entire winter break’s worth of spending money and said they’d only come to get her for the New Year.
“Not bad, right?” Sun Yi whispered. Shi Wangui raised an eyebrow back. “Not bad at all.”
The drive home took some time. The car was warm, and before long, Shi Wangui fell asleep leaning against Wen Youren. Despite the bumpy road, she slept soundly.
When she opened her eyes again, Wen Youren was waking her up. She was so tired that she had curled up against Wen Youren, her head resting on the other girl’s lap, shielded from the sunlight by Wen Youren’s coat.
Looking at the surroundings, Wang Hu’s mother remarked, “The environment here is so peaceful. Your uncle and I want to retire in a place like this, with a little dog and a cat, and flowers in the yard. Playing with the dog in the spring and the cat in the winter.”
“What about your jobs?” Wang Hu asked.
His mother was speechless. “I keep telling you that you have no brains and you keep proving me right. Didn’t you hear me say ‘retire’? Do you think your dad and I are still going to be working in our eighties?”
“I didn’t! I just didn’t hear that part.”
His mother ignored him. “Hurry up and get your things. I still need to visit Teacher Wang’s house in a bit.”
Wen Youren asked suddenly, “Auntie, do you have the address?”
Wen Youren had been quiet the whole time, and the mother hadn’t heard much of her voice, only thinking she looked very handsome. Hearing her now, she felt the girl had a unique aura. Her voice wasn’t masculine, but it was very pleasant—like water dripping onto a lotus leaf, both crisp and deep.
“I have it, Wang Hu gave it to me. This is your house, right? I’ll have to trouble you to look after these two.”
Wen Youren nodded slightly. “I will.”
Wang Hu, unaware of the tension, urged, “Mom, you should go. Dad is waiting for you to come home tonight.”
The sky was turning yellow. Winter days grow dark quickly, and since she still had to visit Teacher Wang, she couldn’t stay long.
“Then I’ll head off first. Call me if anything happens. Help each other out, remember to lock the door at night, and don’t let any strangers in.”
“We will, definitely,” Wang Hu and Sun Yi chimed in.
As soon as the mother left, everyone cheered.
Sun Yi: “This is great! I never thought I’d spend winter break with friends without any parents watching over us.”
Shi Wangui immediately hugged Wen Youren. “Finally! I can show off our relationship in front of my friends. We were dying of frustration back at school.”
Sun Yi and Wang Hu: “…”
“I’m surprised the snow didn’t freeze you to death,” Sun Yi joked.
Shi Wangui held on and wouldn’t let go. “Well, two people hugging keeps you warmer.”
Wen Youren suppressed a smile and rested her hand on Shi Wangui’s back. “Your rooms are the same as before. We came back a while ago to air out the blankets. Since it’s cold, I’ve put electric blankets on the beds. If it’s still cold, you can turn on the air conditioning.”
Shi Wangui: “We won’t feel cold at all.” Sun Yi: “…”
She turned and pulled Wang Hu away, saying, “Let’s play games tonight. Loser gets a penalty.”
“Deal!” Shi Wangui said. “Go to your rooms first,” Wen Youren added.
Shi Wangui didn’t think much of it and opened her door with her suitcase. In that moment, she froze.
On the bed sat a massive box containing a bouquet of white and pink roses. The box was tied to balloons, and each balloon had a photo attached photos of them together.
Shi Wangui pursed her lips, her voice trembling as she asked, “When did you have time to do all this?”
Wen Youren said gently, “Didn’t you say you loved the female lead’s confession scene in that movie we watched last night?”
They had watched a movie together the night before; in the ending, the female lead confessed, the other accepted, and it was a happy ending. Wen Youren had essentially recreated that scene, minus the music and the beach.
“After the college entrance exams are over, I’ll take you to the beach and confess to you again. I want to thank you for crashing into my life and making my frozen heart beat again. I thank you for bringing me joy and making my dull life exciting. We might be young, and to outsiders, we’re just kids who don’t understand love, but I want to say: I will never leave you in this life.” Wen Youren hugged Shi Wangui, stroking her cheek and her hair.
Shi Wangui said, “The moment I truly started seeing you differently was when you proved my innocence. I felt so hopeless then. Sun Yi wasn’t in the dorm, and whenever I went back at night, people were always whispering behind my back. It wasn’t that I didn’t care; I cared a lot. But no one helped me except you.”
That night, the two of them had sat on a bench, saying little but opening up their hearts. Shi Wangui hadn’t understood her feelings then, but looking back now, she felt like she wanted to give that version of Wen Youren a huge hug and a good cry. She would have.
She had always felt that girls were wonderful. Because she would always love girls.
