Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 49
Wen Youren and the others took Shi Wangui to a place far away. They sped along deserted paths on their motorcycles; the wind was biting cold against their faces, but it felt incredibly freeing.
Before long, they pulled up in front of a small two-story house. It featured a large courtyard filled with flowers and plants, and a very tall persimmon tree. The location was remote, with few other houses nearby.
As Wen Youren helped Shi Wangui take off her helmet, the full view came into focus. Since it was winter, the courtyard lacked vitality, but there was a doghouse under the tree. A small black-and-white dog, seeing its owners return, came running over with a wagging tail. Even meeting a stranger like Shi Wangui, the dog gave her a polite wag because its owners were present.
“Where is this?” Shi Wangui asked.
Wang Yuwen laughed, “This is your Sister Youren’s house. Oh, wait—I mean, this is your girlfriend’s house.”
“What?” Shi Wangui was stunned.
Wen Youren had a surprising amount of assets. She had originally thought Wen Yiyue married Shi Qin for his money, but now it seemed that even if they didn’t live a life of extreme luxury, they certainly wouldn’t struggle.
“Stop teasing her,” Wen Youren said.
Wang Yuwen laughed, and the rest of the group gave helpless smiles before heading inside to prepare food. Wen Youren led Shi Wangui to a pair of chairs by the courtyard.
“I asked for a leave of absence for you tonight,” Wen Youren said. “I told the teacher I wasn’t feeling well and needed you to accompany me back to get medicine.”
“No wonder! I was wondering how we could come all this way in such a short time. Also, your friends are great—why didn’t you introduce me sooner?”
Wen Youren explained, “It’s not that I didn’t want to; it just wasn’t convenient recently. This house belongs to Song Yulin. Her parents divorced and started their own families. They wanted to sell this place, but her grandparents had given it to her.”
“So what happened?” Shi Wangui asked. The place looked well-lived in; the little dog was well-fed with a bulging belly, clearly a pup that never missed a meal.
“My friends all have jobs now; they’re adults. I was the youngest—though now, you’re the youngest.”
“I am not…” Shi Wangui muttered. “Back at the infirmary, people thought you were my little sister.”
Wen Youren continued, “When her parents wanted to sell, Yulin couldn’t stop them alone. So, the few of us pooled our money to buy it together and split the ownership. There are exactly four rooms, so we each have one.”
“Actually, I used to think it would be nice not to live with parents, just with friends,” Shi Wangui mused. Suddenly, she felt a chill on her face. She touched it and said excitedly, “It’s snowing!”
Snowflakes drifted through the air. The little dog poked its head out, but after a flake landed on its nose, it whimpered at the cold and retreated back into its den.
Wen Youren held out her hand. “Come on, let’s go eat.”
Shi Wangui took her hand. “Are we going back tonight?”
“No.” Wen Youren looked up at the sky. The snow looked heavy; there was a chance the school might cancel classes tomorrow. “If the snow is light tomorrow, we’ll go. If it’s heavy, the school might be closed anyway.”
“Then I definitely hope for heavy snow. But I heard twelfth graders still have to go even in blizzards. Will we be that miserable later?”
“Probably. That’s why you have to build a good foundation in tenth grade. There’s less to learn now, so I can help you catch up. Later on, there will be too many points to cover; you might not have enough time.”
Shi Wangui kicked a pebble. Maybe I don’t need to catch up, she thought. She hadn’t really wanted to go to university in the beginning. But… catching up is fine too. Life at school with Wen Youren is pretty happy.
“What are you two still chatting about out there? Come eat! Linlin’s cooking is amazing!” Yuan Yiqi shouted at the top of her lungs.
Shi Wangui: “It’s snowing!”
Yuan Yiqi: “We eat even if it snows! After dinner, we’re having a snowball fight!”
Shi Wangui jumped up. “On it!”
Song Yulin’s cooking was indeed incredible. The aroma drifted outside; even though the window was only cracked slightly, the scent filled the entire yard, making even the little dog whimper in anticipation.
Shi Wangui followed Wen Youren into the kitchen. Since they hadn’t helped with the actual cooking, they figured they could carry the dishes. However, as soon as Shi Wangui stepped in, Yuan Yiqi pulled her back out.
“Let Wen Youren handle it. You’re her sweetheart; how could we let you work? If we made you work, Xiao You would get angry.”
“It’s fine, really! I didn’t help with anything earlier, so I should help now.”
Yuan Yiqi, who was not one to take no for an answer, pressed Shi Wangui down into a chair. “We’ve known about you for ages but never got the chance to meet you. Wen Youren is so stingy, acting like we’d eat you alive.”
Wen Youren walked out carrying a dish. “Don’t talk nonsense. Let’s eat.”
Wang Yuwen teased, “We aren’t talking nonsense! Who was it that got drunk that night and cried, saying she thought she fell in love with her ‘sister,’ but her sister hated her?”
!!!
Shi Wangui was stunned. She often asked Wen Youren when she had fallen for her, but she never imagined the girl had cried about it. She gave Wen Youren a playful look. What a big fat liar, saying she couldn’t drink.
“How is Wen Youren’s drinking, anyway?” Shi Wangui asked curiously.
The group went silent for a moment, glanced at Wen Youren, and then burst out laughing. “She’s not exactly a heavyweight she just managed to drink our Linlin under the table, that’s all.”
Shi Wangui blinked, unsure if that meant she was good or bad.
“Eat,” Song Yulin said.
Most of the spread was her work: cola chicken wings, scallion fried eggs, braised chicken, pork rib soup, and lettuce in oyster sauce. The portions were massive—more than enough for five girls.
Wen Youren piled food into Shi Wangui’s bowl, whispering, “Don’t listen to them when they joke around. Just treat it like a story.”
“Hey, we don’t appreciate being ignored like that!” Yuan Yiqi, sitting closest, chimed in.
Shi Wangui smiled, “Let’s eat, sisters! This tastes amazing.”
Yuan Yiqi grinned, “I’ll forgive you just because this little sister is so cute.”
The weather was exceptionally cold, and the indoor air conditioning provided a welcome warmth. The pork rib soup was soul-warming; having a bowl after the meal made one feel completely refreshed.
The table was full of people sharing embarrassing stories and gossip. The atmosphere was wonderful, and Shi Wangui finally got to know Wen Youren’s friends.
They were like her—products of broken homes. Song Yulin had it the worst; both parents were alive, but neither loved her. They divorced when she was young, remarried each other this year, and now even had a baby brother who was 18 years younger than her.
Yuan Yiqi was relatively better off; her parents loved each other, but they were too poor to support two children. So she had started working, sending half her salary home every month.
Wang Yuwen was an orphan, Yuan Yiqi’s colleague, and former classmate. They had stayed together ever since, serving as each other’s support system.
As for Shi Wangui, the “sisters” treated her like a precious little sibling, constantly handing her fruit and candy. They made Wen Youren do all the cleanup while they took the chance to spill more “tea” on Wen Youren’s past.
Like her first cigarette, her first drink, her first fight…
“Alright, it’s 10:00 PM. Aren’t you guys sleeping? Don’t you have work tomorrow?” Wen Youren said, walking over and turning off the TV.
Yuan Yiqi countered, “We can take a day off. You used to skip class all the time—why can’t we take a day off? Who was it that used to skip school to come to our factory?”
“She skipped class?” Shi Wangui asked in shock. Though Wen Youren hadn’t been acting “obedient” lately, when they first met, she seemed to love studying more than anything. Nothing could stop her from studying—she even kept a book by her side when she was sick.
Wang Yuwen laughed, “Haha! She’d just not go to school when she was in a bad mood. But she’s smart and her grades are great, so the teachers always let her off without a word.”
Yuan Yiqi asked, “By the way, did Wen Youren use the ‘not feeling well’ excuse again for your leave tonight?”
Shi Wangui admitted, “She was indeed the one who requested it.” She really hadn’t known; she thought they’d just grab a meal and head back, but Wen Youren had cleared the whole night.
Yuan Yiqi said, “I knew it! She’s a troublemaker. You look like such a good student, a real ‘good kid.’ Between you and her, who has better grades now?”
???
Shi Wangui felt this wasn’t even a question that required thought. “She does…”
Yuan Yiqi went silent for a moment, then found an excuse for her. “Then she must be a bad influence! She’s distracting you in class and with all this dating stuff.”
Wen Youren countered, “Ask her yourself who’s the one who doesn’t like class and distracts people during lessons.”
Yuan Yiqi: “You.” Shi Wangui: “You.”
Wen Youren said helplessly, “Let’s sleep, it’s late.” With that, she took Shi Wangui’s hand and led her to her room.
Wen Youren’s room here was different from the one in the countryside. This one was like a dream, filled with dolls. Even the bedsheets and pillowcases were pink. It was hard to imagine Wen Youren liking these things.
“Wang Yuwen decorated this. She did it in the style she likes,” Wen Youren explained, seeing Shi Wangui’s silence and guessing her thoughts. That made more sense.
Suddenly, Wang Yuwen poked her head in. “What are you talking about? She bought all of this herself to decorate for you! I think you were even secretly stalking her that day.”
Wen Youren: “…” Shi Wangui: “!!!”
Hahaha, Shi Wangui laughed internally. Wen Youren was so awkward; why was she suddenly so shy about admitting things in front of her friends?
Shi Wangui felt a bit shy too, her face flushing as she said, “Should we go to sleep?”
Wen Youren looked bashful. “Mhm…”
“By the way,” Shi Wangui added, “Sun Yi taught me a few things today.”
“What things?”
“About physical matters between girls.”
