Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 40
Wen Youren had been gone ever since she left, not returning until evening self-study. However, the hair she had finally managed to grow out was cut short again. Her previous hair had almost reached her waist with slight curls, but now it was straightened. Her bangs were parted down the middle, with the front strands barely brushing her cheeks and the back only reaching her neck.
As soon as she sat down, Shi Wangui asked, “Where did you go? And why did you cut your hair?”
Wen Youren opened her mouth slightly, then lowered her eyes in thought. After a moment, she replied, “I had things to do. Do you like it?”
Shi Wangui studied her seriously. “You look very handsome like this, but I liked how you looked before better. It was curly and sometimes had a cute, stubborn charm.”
To Wen Youren, however, the one with the cute, stubborn charm was Shi Wangui.
There was no teacher in the classroom, so even though it was self-study, it was a bit noisy. Hearing Shi Wangui say this, Wen Youren looked as if she wanted to say something several times, but the words died on her lips. She looked constantly hesitant.
Shi Wangui had spent every day with her for months now and could detect even the slightest emotional shift, let alone this obvious anomaly. “You seem unhappy?”
In truth, Shi Wangui didn’t want Wen Youren to have contact with Jiang An’an. She knew that Wen Youren’s preference for girls had been revealed by Jiang An’an, and she always felt there was some history between them.
“It’s nothing,” Wen Youren denied. “Let’s study. I just felt my hair was getting too long and was a hassle to manage, so I cut it.”
Shi Wangui didn’t believe her, especially since this new haircut looked much harder to maintain.
“If you’re unhappy, just talk to me,” Shi Wangui added. She felt certain the person who came today was Jiang An’an, and Wen Youren’s change in mood was definitely related to her. Was it something from their village?
Shi Wangui whispered, “Was the person who came to see you Jiang An’an?”
Wen Youren’s eyes widened. Her grip on her pen weakened until it finally dropped. “Did you see her?”
“No,” Shi Wangui gestured toward Sun Yi. “Sun Yi described her, and I guessed. Besides, I don’t skip class anymore, but you skipped this afternoon, didn’t you?”
Wen Youren let out a breath of relief. “It was her first time here and she didn’t know her way around. Her mother asked me to take her to buy some things.”
“Oh,” Shi Wangui didn’t think much further. “Her mother is a bit selfish. Letting her daughter come out on a school day is one thing, but making you accompany her? Doesn’t she worry about delaying your studies?”
She also thought Jiang An’an had some nerve. After things ended so poorly last time, how did she have the face to come here?
Wen Youren smiled. “It’s fine. I’m back now, aren’t I?”
“Listen,” Shi Wangui pointed upward. Three seconds later, the bell rang. “The second period of self-study is over.”
Wen Youren caught Shi Wangui’s finger and said with a smile, “There’s still one more period. These few days are for reviewing test papers, so there isn’t much homework. I can finish it.”
“Wanwan, come buy water with me,” Sun Yi suddenly turned around from the front row.
Shi Wangui was torn. Her partner had just returned and she had so many questions, but she figured they would have plenty of time at night. “Okay!”
There were many students outside. For tenth graders, the last period of self-study was mostly free time. As long as they didn’t leave the school grounds, returning to class a bit late usually wasn’t an issue. The playground and convenience store were almost entirely taken over by students.
“By the way, Wanwan, where did Wen Youren go this afternoon?” Sun Yi asked gossipingly. “Did she go out specifically to cut her hair? Why so short? Though I have to say, she really is good-looking.”
Sun Yi’s original prejudice against Wen Youren had been based on learning her identity, but after getting to know her and seeing the four of them grow closer, she would openly express her admiration for Wen Youren.
“I still think her little curls from before looked better.”
“Is she handsomer now?”
That much was undeniable. Shi Wangui said instinctively, “As long as she likes it herself, it doesn’t matter. I’m fine with either.”
“Huh?” Sun Yi was confused. “Why are you fine with either?”
Shi Wangui: “…”
Oops. It seemed they hadn’t told their friends about their relationship yet. She couldn’t keep it a secret forever, though. Maybe she should go public at the amusement park tomorrow. Hehe.
“Nothing, nothing. The convenience store is here. Didn’t you want to buy water?”
Seeing they had arrived, Sun Yi dove in and bought two Cokes, getting one for Shi Wangui as well.
“Wanwan, do you think if someone hid their love life from a friend, the friend would be angry?” Sun Yi asked indirectly.
Shi Wangui: “!!!”
Does she know? Did she find out? How? Was it because my attitude toward Wen Youren changed too much? But how could she tell? Normally people would just think we made up or something.
Shi Wangui carefully reviewed her change in attitude toward Wen Youren. At first, it wasn’t actual dislike, just that her identity was annoying, so she had been stubborn. The major turning point was likely her birthday, which truly made her feel like she had a family.
Shi Wangui said weakly, “Then just wait for her to admit it herself.”
Sun Yi clearly didn’t approve of that answer. “What if she never admits it?”
I’m not doing that; I plan to admit it tomorrow.
Shi Wangui: “Then just ask her directly.”
If you ask, I’ll definitely tell you.
Sun Yi shook her head. “Sigh.”
Is that still not okay? Shi Wangui thought.
“Then drag her out and give her a beating.”
Sun Yi waved her hands frantically. “No, no, no! Let’s just get back to class.”
Sun Yi’s inner monologue: It seems I’ll have to find a chance to talk things through with Shi Wangui later. Last time was too much of a fluke. If nobody knew, it would be fine, but the problem is that Shi Wangui is the only one who doesn’t know.
“I have something to say tomorrow night!” The two said almost in unison, then looked at each other and laughed.
Shi Wangui: “Why do you have something too? And you said it at the same time as me.”
Sun Yi: “Hahaha, we’re just so in sync.”
Shi Wangui: “Let’s see whose news is more explosive tomorrow!”
Even as she said it, Shi Wangui felt she was destined to win.
When they returned to class, they saw several girls standing at the back door, giggling about something. As soon as Shi Wangui returned to her seat, she felt an uncomfortable gaze. She looked back and saw the gaze was fixed on Wen Youren.
She’s a girl! And she’s mine!
Shi Wangui said resentfully, “When are you going to grow your hair out again?”
Wen Youren chuckled. “What’s wrong?”
Wen Youren had cut her hair because she felt frustrated. It wasn’t true that her previous teachers hadn’t allowed it; she simply tended to cut it when she felt anxious.
Shi Wangui: “I like you with long hair!”
Wen Youren lowered her eyes thoughtfully. “Wanwan, is this okay?”
Shi Wangui shook her head. “My good friends call me Wanwan, but you aren’t just my good friend.”
“Then what should I call you?”
Shi Wangui thought for a moment. “Call me A-Wan, A-You.”
She not only came up with a nickname for herself but also one for Wen Youren.
“Okay,” Wen Youren smiled.
Seeing her smile, Shi Wangui’s face turned red. She couldn’t quite understand her own heart; it felt as though she had suddenly fallen deeply in love in a single moment and would love her forever. She couldn’t explain it, so she simply went along with it.
After school, Shi Wangui was incredibly excited. she was about to see her gift. However, Wen Youren had something to do and went out for a bit, saying she would be back in half an hour.
As soon as Shi Wangui returned to the dorm, she began to struggle internally. Wen Youren had surely placed the gift near her desk, and there was indeed a box on top of it.
I want to open it so badly. It’s definitely for me. Open it; it was meant for you anyway. Don’t open it; it’s a surprise from Wen Youren.
A little angel and a little devil fought in front of her eyes. It was such a difficult dilemma; she wanted to listen to both. In the end, Shi Wangui went to take a shower. She wanted the surprise of opening it to be shared between the two of them.
By the time she finished her shower, Wen Youren was back. Tonight, Shi Wangui felt that Wen Youren wasn’t happy. Her facial expression was as stiff as a painting, and any occasional smile felt forced.
“I really feel like you’re unhappy today. Did that Jiang An’an say something to you?”
Wen Youren’s expression changed. “It’s nothing.”
“A-Wan.”
Shi Wangui: “What is it?”
Wen Youren stroked her cheek and said helplessly, “Jiang An’an came to find me again.”
Shi Wangui’s eyes widened slightly. She stared at Wen Youren for a while before looking down. “I don’t like her. She’s like a ghost that won’t leave.”
Wen Youren bowed her head.
“But I know you’ve known each other a long time, and her mother was good to you, so let’s just avoid her from now on.”
“If she looks for you again, just ignore her,” Shi Wangui agreed. “Act like you don’t even see her.”
Wen Youren: “Okay.”
Shi Wangui rarely disliked people. She just thought people like Li Jun, who bullied others, were sick, but the only ones she truly hated were Xu Qingnan and Jiang An’an.
Xu Qingnan’s reputation was notorious: cheating, fighting, hitting women. Every bit of it was repulsive. Mostly, she felt Xu Qingnan wasn’t sincere toward Sun Yi, but if Sun Yi insisted on being with him, she wouldn’t say much.
As for Jiang An’an, she didn’t know the full history between her and Wen Youren, but it had seemed off that morning, and Jiang An’an clearly couldn’t keep a secret. For now, it was just speculation that they might have some family-like bond.
So, were they ever together?
Shi Wangui: “I want to ask you a question.”
Wen Youren: “What question?”
Shi Wangui: “You are my first love and my first partner. Am I yours?”
Wen Youren smiled. “Yes.”
That’s fine then. I’ll forgive you this once.
Shi Wangui: “One more question.”
Wen Youren: “Ask away.”
Shi Wangui: “That day it thundered and you held me while we slept in the hospital. Did you like me even then?”
Wen Youren: “Yes.”
Shi Wangui held out her hand. “Where’s my gift!”
Wen Youren opened the box on the desk. Inside was a bank card. She took it out and placed it in Shi Wangui’s hand. “This is all my savings. I’m giving it to you to look after. Let’s work hard together and have a beautiful life in the future.”
This, this, this.
This was not the kind of gift Shi Wangui had expected. Who in their right mind gives a bank card as a gift! It felt like it was burning her hand; this card was truly heavy. She hadn’t stayed with Wen Youren for money.
Seeing Shi Wangui remain silent, Wen Youren worried she was overthinking things. “It’s the money for us to live elsewhere in the future.”
Shi Wangui: “Then, then okay.”
