Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 39
The exam results were out. Shi Wangui performed very well. Though not at the top of the class, she landed exactly at 20th place, which was just enough to reach the rank where Wen Youren had promised a reward. When the homeroom teacher first saw the list, she thought there might be another student with the same name, but upon closer inspection, it was indeed the ranking for her class.
“Hehe, I just asked the class representative to do some digging; I’m exactly 20th,” Shi Wangui said, resting her chin on her hands atop the desk. “When are you giving me my reward?”
Wen Youren chuckled softly. “Tonight. I’ve already bought it and left it in the dorm.”
“You already bought it?” Shi Wangui was surprised. “What if I hadn’t made the top twenty?”
“No matter what, you wouldn’t have been last in class.” Wen Youren tilted her head. “If you hadn’t made the top twenty, then it would have been a reward for your improvement.”
Shi Wangui pouted and sat up straight. “You should have said so earlier! I was worried for so long, terrified I’d end up 21st. That would’ve been such a loss.”
But now that she was 20th, she felt like she had truly hit the jackpot.
“If I didn’t give you a little pressure, would you have looked forward to the gift this much?”
“Hehe,” Shi Wangui grinned. “You really do know me.”
“I have to accompany you even when you go to the bathroom; how could I not understand you?” Wen Youren teased.
One night, after they had watched a horror movie, Shi Wangui claimed she wasn’t scared. However, in the middle of the night, she needed to use the bathroom but was too terrified to go alone. Eventually, unable to hold it any longer, she had to wake Wen Youren up.
Shi Wangui: “Be quiet.”
Wen Youren: “Alright. Class is starting.”
The homeroom teacher looked very happy today, walking with a spring in her step. Unlike her usual stern self, she had a smile on her face and her eyes were squinted with joy.
“The monthly exam results are out. Our class did exceptionally well, especially Shi Wangui and Sun Yi. One ranked 20th in the class, and the other 29th. So, you see, is studying hard? It isn’t. As long as you are willing to learn, it’s impossible not to understand.”
“Take Shi Wangui, for example. She took two months of leave for health reasons, but did her grades drop when she returned? While it is true her previous grades left no room to drop further, she has improved, and by a massive margin. Previously, she could only score a few points in Math, but this time she got a 96. She used to fail English, but this time she scored 120. This goes to show that as long as you find the right method, it’s never too late to learn.”
As the teacher praised her from the podium, Shi Wangui’s face turned bright red. Her English hadn’t actually been bad; she just hadn’t been willing to write during exams before, choosing ABCD at random. Furthermore, having been used to getting lectured for years, this sudden praise made her feel quite shy.
When they had taken their leave earlier, the homeroom teacher hadn’t mentioned Wen Youren’s self-harm; she simply said both were unwell and had gone home to recover.
Watching her blushing seatmate, Wen Youren teased, “Are you happy? Being praised like that?”
Shi Wangui lowered her head, leaning closer to whisper, “Happy!”
Wen Youren added, “It’s good to be happy, but I just remembered: the Math teacher wants you to go to the office after class.”
Shi Wangui: “Wait, I passed! Why do I still have to go to the office?”
“Maybe to praise you?”
Shi Wangui stared intently at Wen Youren, her voice suddenly rising. “I noticed your hair has grown a bit longer. It looks even better.”
“Keep your voice down, the teacher is still teaching,” Wen Youren reminded her shyly. “It has grown. When the Math teacher told me, I didn’t have time to ask why before he left. It’s fine; I’ll pretend to visit the Physics teacher later so I can stay with you.”
Shi Wangui smiled. “Okay.”
After class, Shi Wangui and Wen Youren went to the office together. The Math and Physics teachers’ desks were front-to-back, so the two girls were essentially standing together.
The Math teacher was sipping tea. Seeing Shi Wangui arrive, he set his cup down and teased, “Shi Wangui, am I teaching that poorly in class? Why is it that after staying home for two months, you suddenly passed Math?”
Shi Wangui realized it was a total dead end. Any honest answer would be a disaster, so she decided to change tactics and suck up to him. She said, almost through gritted teeth, “Without your teaching for the first two months, how could I have grown in the last two?”
“Pfft,” Wen Youren laughed.
The Math teacher cleared his throat. “Don’t get distracted. You did well this time; I looked at your paper. You didn’t manage to solve the difficult problem, and you seemed to guess one of the multiple-choice questions correctly. But you got all the foundational questions right, which means your basics have improved significantly lately.”
Shi Wangui: “Mhm, mhm.”
Math teacher: “Now you can try higher-level problems. Since Wen Youren is right here and you’re seatmates, you can start tackling the harder questions. Study hard; it was 96 this time, maybe 126 next time, and 146 after that.”
Shi Wangui nodded, though she thought the teacher was being too optimistic. Although her middle school grades were excellent, she hadn’t studied seriously for a year or two. There was no way to jump that many points so quickly.
Shi Wangui: “Yes, yes, okay.”
The Math teacher picked up his tea again. “I won’t say much more. Just a reminder: don’t let down the expectations your homeroom teacher and I have for you.”
Then he added, “And Wen Youren, you’re here to scout the situation, aren’t you? You’ve been standing by the Physics teacher for so long without asking a single question. Are you afraid I’m giving Shi Wangui secret tutoring? You two girls have a good bond; you should keep improving together.”
Wen Youren: “Understood.”
“Go on, get back to class.”
The Physics teacher joined in; she had been grading papers. When Wen Youren stood by her, she thought there would be questions. But since the girl just stood there with her test paper in silence, the teacher had simply continued grading.
Shi Wangui and Wen Youren shared a smile and walked out of the classroom hand-in-hand. One perk of liking your sister is that you can hold hands in broad daylight and no one suspects a thing.
“You should seek my guidance properly,” Wen Youren joked.
“Psh,” Shi Wangui said dismissively. “I’ll ask Teacher Wang this weekend. She’ll definitely be happy since I finally passed.”
Wen Youren: “True, you did great.”
Wang Hu approached them, also looking radiant. His previous plan had failed because his parents had refused to pay until they saw his grades, so he had been waiting for today. Naturally, hard work paid off, and his grades had improved significantly.
“Look at this.” Wang Hu flourished some tickets. “My mom just dropped them off. They’re for the night session. Since we have no school tomorrow, we’ll head there after school finishes.”
Shi Wangui: “Great!”
“Where’s Sun Yi?”
Wang Hu glanced at the classroom. “Don’t know. Bathroom? Buying snacks?”
Shi Wangui remarked casually, “I hope her boyfriend didn’t come to ask her out. Did you tell her we’re all going to the amusement park tomorrow night? Just the four of us.”
Wang Hu and Wen Youren suddenly went quiet. Shi Wangui had clearly blacked out that night.
Wang Hu: “I haven’t told her yet, but she definitely won’t bring her boyfriend.”
Shi Wangui frowned. “How are you so sure?”
Wen Youren: “I’m also sure she won’t bring him.”
Shi Wangui looked between the two of them before saying, “Fine, I believe you.”
Wang Hu looked confused. “Believe who?”
Shi Wangui ignored him and turned back into the classroom with Wen Youren. The first thing she did upon returning to her seat was use her own hair to twirl Wen Youren’s wavy locks. “It really has grown a lot. I think you look good with long hair.”
Short hair looked spirited, but long hair was truly both beautiful and cool. Wen Youren also reached out to touch Shi Wangui’s hair. “Yours is longer too.”
Shi Wangui: “I’m going to let mine grow to my waist. Isn’t there a saying? ‘When my hair reaches my waist, will you marry me?'”
“Can I use that too?” Wen Youren mimicked her. “Wait until we both have hair to our waists.”
“Hehe, okay. But why did you have short hair before?”
Wen Youren: “Because the school required it.”
Shi Wangui realized she had forgotten about that. She had thought Wen Youren was just trying to look cool back then.
Sun Yi returned to the classroom at that moment. As soon as she got back, she said to Wen Youren, “Wen Youren, someone is looking for you at the school gate. They look a bit familiar.”
Wen Youren: “Looking for me?”
Sun Yi: “Mhm, go quickly. There are only fifteen minutes left of the long break.”
Wen Youren asked Shi Wangui, “Do you want to come with me?”
Shi Wangui had intended to talk to Sun Yi about the evening plans, so she said, “It’s fine, I’ll wait for you in the classroom.”
“Okay.”
As soon as Sun Yi sat down, Shi Wangui said, “Amusement park tomorrow night, okay! You’re not allowed to bring your boyfriend.”
Hearing the word “boyfriend,” Sun Yi nearly choked. “I won’t, I won’t. How could I possibly bring him?”
Shi Wangui was satisfied. “That’s more like it.”
It wasn’t that she didn’t want her friend to date; it was just that the boyfriend was truly not a good person.
“By the way, do you know the person looking for Wen Youren?” Shi Wangui asked curiously.
“Now that you mention it, they looked a bit familiar. Maybe I saw them in the village, or perhaps at the convenience store,” Sun Yi recalled.
“What do they look like?” Shi Wangui pressed.
Sun Yi was able to answer, “Medium-length hair, about the same height as me, very pale skin, very thin, and with straight-cut bangs.”
Straight bangs, pale skin, medium-length hair.
Jiang An’an?
