Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 38
At a house at the end of the village, the silhouette of a girl appeared in the indifferent moonlight. She gripped her phone tightly, her eyes already red from crying. She allowed the snowflakes to fall, slowly dampening her hair.
“Anan?” The door opened suddenly. Mother Jiang saw her daughter standing in the snow and asked in confusion, “Why aren’t you coming in? It is so cold out here with the snow.”
“It is nothing, I just got home,” Jiang Anan replied. She quickly ran to her room, opened her phone, and began scrolling through it meticulously.
Worried that her daughter might catch a cold, Mother Jiang brought in a cup of hot milk. “Drink something warm and go to bed early. Your teacher said you took leave because you weren’t feeling well. Where does it hurt exactly?”
“I am fine, Mom. I just felt a bit out of sorts. The teacher dropped me off at the village entrance. I will go back to school tomorrow.”
“Go back only when you feel better. Do not ruin your health for the sake of your studies.”
“I know,” Jiang Anan replied dismissively. Suddenly, she asked, “By the way, Mom, why is Xiao You back lately? Does she not have classes? Where is she going to school now?”
“Xiao You,” Mother Jiang recalled carefully. “She seems to be on leave. She is doing quite well now, studying at No. 8 High School. But when I asked her a while ago, she said she was heading back to school soon.”
“Then who is that girl next to her?” Jiang Anan asked.
“That is her sister. They are one family.”
“Sister?” A glint appeared in Jiang Anan’s eyes.
“Yes. Her mother got remarried, and that girl is from the husband’s side.”
Jiang Anan became lost in thought. “Oh, I see. Goodnight, Mom. I am going to rest. If I feel better tomorrow, I will take the bus back to school.”
Mother Jiang took the empty milk cup. “Get some rest.”
After her mother left, the color returned to Jiang Anan’s face. she pulled a letter from the very back of her desk and read the contents once more, an involuntary smile touching her lips. Afterward, she tucked the letter into a book, put it in her schoolbag, and fell asleep.
“Wanwan, is there something wrong with your head? The monthly exams start on Wednesday, and you chose now to come back?” Sun Yi was happy to see Shi Wangui back at school, but since they had been seeing each other two days a week anyway, she had not expected her friend to return right before an exam.
The class seating had been rearranged recently. Sun Yi and Wang Hu now sat together, and the teacher had kept the original spots for Shi Wangui and Wen Youren. Consequently, the four of them were sitting together again.
Shi Wangui had no idea the school was holding exams. She began to suspect Wen Youren had done this on purpose, but what could she do? She had to coax her own partner.
She slumped onto the desk helplessly and sighed. “I want to know why, too.”
Wen Youren was not in the classroom, and Shi Wangui felt bored. Lately, they had grown much closer, and being apart for even a short time made her feel restless.
“By the way, Wanwan,” Sun Yi said, leaning in. “We found out a lot of things while you were gone. Do you remember that diary we found in the auditorium?”
Shi Wangui sat up. “I remember.”
“With the New Year’s Gala coming up, our class has a performance. During one evening self-study session, I snuck into the auditorium. A senior girl happened to be there too. She saw the notebook and told us the story behind it,” Sun Yi said mysteriously.
Shi Wangui was immediately intrigued. “What happened?”
“You guessed right; it really was a romance between two girls. They were deeply in love back then, but eventually, the whole school found out. Their parents got involved, and the ending was not happy,” Sun Yi explained.
“Why was it unhappy?” Shi Wangui asked.
Sun Yi sighed. “One of the girls claimed she wasn’t gay. She said she didn’t know her own orientation at the time, but now she realized she only viewed the other girl as a friend.”
Shi Wangui was shocked. She wondered if someone could really agree to be with another person without knowing their own orientation. Shi Wangui had not been sure of her own orientation either, but she had secretly experimented and learned through both literature and practice.
The truth was, being with Wen Youren made her truly happy. She could not help but want to kiss her. It felt very right.
“Do you think someone could really be like that?” Sun Yi asked. “If you like someone, would you care about their gender?”
Shi Wangui shook her head. “I definitely would not care.”
“Neither would I,” Sun Yi agreed. “Liking someone is about their personality, character, and values. It shouldn’t be linked to gender.”
“Exactly. So what happened next?” Shi Wangui asked.
“The girl who identified as gay transferred schools. She is actually a senior now. That notebook was something she wrote in her first year. In short, it is hard to judge,” Sun Yi said.
“Yes,” Shi Wangui nodded emphatically. “I agree, it is very hard to judge!”
“What are you all chatting about?”
Wen Youren had just returned from the office and saw her “sister” with an exaggerated, almost angry expression.
“Nothing, hehehe,” Shi Wangui chirped.
Sun Yi was stunned. Was Wanwan just smiling at Wen Youren? And such an intimate smile at that? Has their relationship reached this level?
Last time, she thought they had simply buried the hatchet, but today, they really looked like best friends who had known each other for years. It must be an illusion, Sun Yi thought. Wanwan is just in a good mood lately.
“The teacher said the exams are on Wednesday,” Wen Youren noted. “She wants to see if our grades improved while we were away. She has some ‘devilish measures’ prepared if we fall behind.”
“Piece of cake!” Shi Wangui said smugly. “Teacher Wang’s tutoring wasn’t for nothing, and neither was your nightly help.”
Sun Yi was also looking forward to it. She hadn’t cared much for studying before, but after learning with her friends for a while, she found it enjoyable. Even when they weren’t together or under Teacher Wang’s instruction, they listened in class as if a new world had opened to them.
“If you get into the top twenty of the class, I will give you a reward,” Wen Youren said, patting Shi Wangui’s head.
Shi Wangui did not bristle at the touch. “Deal! I will be waiting for that reward.” She immediately opened a math book and began to study the problems intently.
Fortunately, it was only the first year, and there wasn’t too much new material. She could still get by in English on her existing knowledge, and Wen Youren had been tutoring her daily in the science subjects. Even if she wasn’t a top student, she was certainly better than before.
As for whether she could make the top twenty, she would leave that to fate.
The exams finished quickly. The first day covered Math and Chinese. After finishing, Shi Wangui had no energy for other subjects and simply used Wen Youren’s paper to estimate her own score. She couldn’t estimate her Chinese grade, but Math was easy.
“Fifty points, seventy points, eighty-two points.”
“Do you trust me that much? What if I got some wrong?” Wen Youren teased.
Shi Wangui nudged Wen Youren playfully. “How could you be wrong? Hehe, you definitely got a perfect score.”
Sitting nearby, Sun Yi felt something was strange, but she decided to respect her best friend’s choices.
“I feel like my math score won’t be low this time! It might not be the highest, but it definitely won’t be low,” Shi Wangui said proudly after checking all the answers.
“One hundred and thirty?” Wen Youren asked.
“Around ninety-five.” Shi Wangui paused. Since when was one hundred and thirty not considered high? Sun Yi, Wang Hu, and Shi Wangui all wanted to ask the same thing.
Wang Hu was the happiest of them all. He had always been a diligent student, but his methods were wrong, leaving him on the verge of failing. This time he did well; based on Wen Youren’s paper, he would definitely get at least a hundred.
Sun Yi was also satisfied. She had the weakest foundation among them, and although Shi Wangui usually scored lower than her, she knew Shi Wangui actually had a decent grasp of the basics.
“It’s fine, that is actually very high. It is a big improvement. The homeroom teacher will be happy,” Wen Youren said.
“Of course. Look who you are talking to.”
“Don’t rush home tonight, everyone!” Wang Hu interrupted. “I am treating you all to malatang!”
“Yay!” Shi Wangui cheered.
“Then I’ll buy everyone milk tea!” Sun Yi added.
“Yay!” Shi Wangui cheered again.
“Then I will organize the key points for tomorrow’s exam for everyone in a bit,” Wen Youren said.
“Yay!” Shi Wangui cheered once more.
After she finished cheering, she realized something was wrong. Everyone else was contributing except her.
“Then… I will buy everyone milk for tomorrow morning?” Shi Wangui suggested. The school canteen didn’t have much good food, but the morning milk was decent.
“Yay!” Sun Yi and Wang Hu cheered.
Shi Wangui felt a pang of regret as she thought of her money flying away.
When the others weren’t looking, Wen Youren whispered to Shi Wangui, “You don’t have to attend morning self-study tomorrow. Sleep in or review a bit more. I will buy breakfast for you and get the milk for the others.”
“I’ll give you the money then,” Shi Wangui whispered back shyly.
Wen Youren squeezed her hand. “No need. What is mine is yours.”
Shi Wangui raised her head proudly. “You are right!”
Wen Youren continued, “The temperature dropped so fast. My blanket is still quite thin. Is yours thin too?”
“I…” Shi Wangui was momentarily speechless. She rolled her eyes playfully. “Mine seems a bit thin too.”
“Would you mind if the bed is small and two people have to squeeze in?”
“Oh, stop it!” Shi Wangui said shyly. “You’re making me embarrassed.”
The whole class was there, and Sun Yi and Wang Hu were sitting right in front of them. Fortunately, the exams had just ended and the classroom was noisy, so no one could hear them clearly.
“Alright, I won’t tease you anymore,” Wen Youren laughed. “Because… I am embarrassed too.”
Sun Yi suddenly turned around and asked, “Embarrassed about what?”
She had originally wanted to ask about a question, but she happened to hear those last few words and her curiosity was piqued.
“Not embarrassed, we were discussing! Discussing where to go have fun after the exams!” Shi Wangui covered.
“Let’s go to the amusement park!” Wang Hu said. “If I did well, my mom will definitely reward me. Let’s go together.”
“The results aren’t out yet. How do you know if you did well?” Shi Wangui asked.
Wang Hu gave a sly grin. “You don’t understand. You can usually tell how you did during the exam. If I did well, I’ll be rewarded. If I didn’t, well, the reward will have already been given, and she can’t take it back!”
“You’re something else,” the others said in unison.
