Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 28
Time slipped by quietly. Perhaps this meal had dispelled some of the previous prejudices. Sun Yi hadn’t liked Wen Youren initially, but that was because of Wen Yiyue. Now that Shi Wangui had let bygones be bygones, she saw no reason to hold a grudge.
In this household now, Wen Youren was the oldest, though only sixteen merely a few months older than the others. Without any adults around, how could the kids not stir up some mischief?
After just a few bites, Shi Wangui fetched her backpack from the sofa. It was noticeably heavier than before, and the faint clinking of glass could be heard from inside.
“Look what I bought!” Shi Wangui pulled out two bottles of 40-proof baijiu from her bag. She had secretly bought them that morning and hidden them in her backpack to avoid Wen Youren’s notice.
“Alcohol?” Sun Yi and Wang Hu spoke in unison. “Are you going to drink?”
“Of course not.” Shi Wangui placed both bottles on the table. This stuff was much more expensive than beer, but thankfully, she had swindled quite a bit of money from Shi Qin last time. “We’re all going to drink.”
“I’m not drinking,” Wen Youren refused outright.
Shi Wangui shook his arm gently. “Just a little? For fun?”
Wen Youren propped his elbow on the table, resting his cheek on the back of his hand, and asked with a faint, teasing smile, “Who told you it would be fun?”
Sun Yi interjected, “Are you two that close now?”
Shi Wangui wanted to say no, but she didn’t want to drink with one person missing. Besides, she was curious to see if Wen Youren could hold his liquor whether he was the type to secretly smoke and drink. So, she half-heartedly replied, “Just so-so.”
“Just-so-so friends shouldn’t agree to drink together,” Wen Youren said deliberately, tapping the table lightly with his fingers.
Shi Wangui poured a full glass and pushed it in front of him. “Drink!”
Wen Youren chuckled softly. “Fine. But then we’re not just-so-so friends anymore.”
With her goal achieved, Shi Wangui poured a glass for everyone. Wang Hu, however, didn’t drink. As a child, he had secretly taken a sip of alcohol and ended up in the hospital. He was diagnosed with alcohol allergy, so he naturally wouldn’t risk his life like that.
Shi Wangui stared at the clear liquid in her glass, which smelled slightly pungent. This was her first time trying it. They said alcohol could drown all sorrows and transport you to a dreamlike world. She was determined to see if it was true.
She didn’t have much courage for chugging, but when she saw Wen Youren taking sip after sip as if it were nothing, her competitive spirit kicked in. Why should he be better at drinking than her?
To prove she could outdrink him, Shi Wangui downed half her glass in one go.
The other two at the table stared at her in shock, their eyes wide. Wen Youren, however, squinted slightly and piled a bowl of food in front of her.
Disgusting!!!
Ahhh!!! So spicy on the throat!!! What “drowning sorrows in drink”? It’s just forgetting your troubles because you’ve consumed something this spicy.
Food, food, food.
Her face flushed bright red, Shi Wangui devoured the entire bowl of food. Even after finishing it, she didn’t feel much better and kept eating whatever was in front of her.
“Wanwan, why did you drink so much?” Sun Yi asked.
Shi Wangui ate another bowl of food, and only then did the spiciness subside slightly. But in the time it took her to eat, her face had turned as red as an apple. “N-nothing, just trying it out. You drink too.”
Sun Yi also took a small sip. In truth, she could drink both alcohol and smoking were within her repertoire but Shi Wangui didn’t know she could handle alcohol, so she had to put on a bit of an act. “So strong,” she said.
But her expressionless face made even her pretense seem unconvincing.
Shi Wangui no longer felt like drinking. Her head was spinning, and she suddenly remembered that Sun Yi had mentioned wanting to talk to her about something that evening. “By the way,” she asked, “what was it you wanted to tell me tonight?”
Her mind felt heavy and muddled, her words slightly slurred, and a jumble of images, of all kinds flashed through her thoughts.
“Are you drunk?” Sun Yi asked cautiously.
Wang Hu nodded in agreement. “I think so. Who in their right mind downs a whole glass like that?”
“Don’t talk nonsense. I’m not drunk. Look at me, I’m perfectly fine,” Shi Wangui retorted, clenching her fist as if to throw a punch before letting her hand drop weakly.
“Well, you said it. Don’t blame me later if you wake up and don’t remember anything,” Sun Yi tested her again.
“Ugh, I’m really not drunk. Just tell me already,” Shi Wangui insisted.
“Alright then, I’ll say it.” Sun Yi glanced around at the three of them before finally revealing the secret she had been holding in. “I broke up. Xu Qingnan cheated on me. He’s with some girl from his school now.”
Silence fell over the room.
Wang Hu was the most shocked. Just a couple of days ago, he had heard Sun Yi mention going to have a meal with her boyfriend. How could things change so drastically, and without him having any clue?
“How come I didn’t know about this?” Wang Hu asked.
“What?” Shi Wangui sounded confused. “I always said that guy was no good. Cheating is that something a decent person would do?”
“Look at you. When others date, they end up with CEOs like Shi, Sun, or Wang. How come you ended up with a scumbag?”
“No Wen CEO?” Wen Youren suddenly chimed in.
“There’s you!” Shi Wangui’s words were cut short as she slumped over the table.
“Holy cow! I’d only heard of people passing out after one drink, but I never believed it. How did she just collapse like that?” Wang Hu exclaimed in disbelief. “And you, what’s this about a breakup? How did things change so fast for both of you?”
It was unbelievable. Passing out after just one drink, and so suddenly wasn’t that like an allergic reaction, where the moment you’re exposed to an allergen, your body breaks out in rashes?
And then there was Sun Yi’s breakup. Just recently, she and Xu Qingnan had been all lovey-dovey, and now they were over? And Shi Wangui, who used to act like enemies with Wen Youren, were now getting along so well?
“Let’s not bring this up tomorrow. Otherwise, she’ll want to try drinking again,” Sun Yi suggested.
This matter had been weighing on her mind. Xu Qingnan was such a scumbag never satisfied with what he had, always eyeing what wasn’t his. But she was worried that if her friends confronted him, Shi Wangui might end up getting hurt. Now that she had spoken up, whether Shi Wangui would remember any of it was up to fate. “Should I take her to her room?”
Shi Wangui was seated next to Wen Youren at the wide, long table, with two people on each side. Since she was sitting on the inside, Sun Yi and the others couldn’t easily get to her to help her out. Only Wen Youren could take her.
“Your rooms are on the second floor. I’ve already turned on the lights, and the rooms have just been cleaned. You can choose whichever one you like. I’ll wake you up in the morning and take you out,” Wen Youren said as he effortlessly lifted Shi Wangui into his arms, addressing the other two. “Of course, the destination was Shi Wangui’s choice.”
“Wait a moment.” Sun Yi paused to process. “Which room is Wanwan sleeping in? I could check on her tonight, she might throw up after drinking.”
“No need.” Wen Youren smiled. “She’s sleeping with me. I’ll take good care of her.” Then she walked straight to the bedroom without looking back.
Sun Yi: “…”
Wang Hu: “…”
Are they that close already? Like sisters? Didn’t Shi Wangui swear she’d never acknowledge this sister before? And now, she changed her mind?
If Shi Wangui were alone in the room, Sun Yi might have gone in to check if she was having any adverse reactions to the alcohol. But Wen Youren was there too. Though they weren’t exactly friends or enemies, it still felt inappropriate to barge into their room openly.
Not that Wen Youren would do anything bad anyway.
After bringing Shi Wangui to the room, Wen Youren’s first move was to change her into pajamas. Under her clothes, she wore a white camisole and shorts. Her entire body was flushed pink from the alcohol, her fair skin now resembling a ripe peach, utterly adorable.
Wen Youren stopped undressing her. She knew Shi Wangui had a cleanliness obsession; not bathing after a hotpot meal would surely set her off. But based on Wen Youren’s understanding, if she were to bathe her herself, that would provoke an even bigger reaction.
The worst-case scenario might even lead to Shi Wangui packing up and leaving.
So Wen Youren simply wiped her exposed skin with a warm towel. As the towel passed over her body, a cool breeze swept in, making Shi Wangui shiver and start muttering nonsense.
Wen Youren leaned close to her ear to listen and, after a moment, understood.
She kept saying she was cold.
After finishing the wipe-down, Wen Youren dressed her in pajamas and then headed to the bathroom for a shower. As the hot water streamed over her, images of Shi Wangui kept flashing through her mind.
Her body grew warm, so Wen Youren turned the temperature down a notch. She’s too young.
And she might not even like girls.
Wen Youren glanced down at her own arms and hands, covered in scars, new ones layered over old. Every year, it happened again. She was sick.
She didn’t deserve her.
By the time Wen Youren finished her shower, Shi Wangui seemed to have fallen asleep, the blanket covering half her body, her face still flushed but her brows tightly furrowed. Wen Youren locked the door, turned off the main light, opened the bedside drawer, and then got into bed.
“Hot…” The moment Wen Youren lay down, Shi Wangui began mumbling again, this time with the opposite complaint.
Wen Youren gently brushed her bangs and whispered, “I can only keep you by my side for these few months.”
In a few months, she might not be here anymore. All she could hope for was that these months would set Shi Wangui on the right path and help her choose the best life.
The first time she met this sister, she only thought she was pretty too pretty, just a bit childish. But she’s only fifteen, still a kid. What’s wrong with being a little immature?
“My head hurts…” Shi Wangui’s eyes remained shut, but her mouth didn’t stop.
Wen Youren massaged her temples. She didn’t understand why Shi Wangui wanted to drink and smoke. Those weren’t signs of growing up, they were ways of hurting herself.
If she didn’t have that illness, she probably wouldn’t have chosen to smoke.
“Go ahead freely, and don’t take the wrong path. I hope to hear good news about you many years from now,” Wen Youren murmured, tears falling unnoticed and dripping onto Shi Wangui’s face. The droplets traced along the eyebrows and trickled onto Wen Youren’s hand.
Wen Youren released the hands that had been massaging, gently wiped the corners of their own eyes, then opened the bedside drawer and pulled out a tissue. Clutching the tissue, Wen Youren finally bowed their head softly and kissed away the tears.
