Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 13
On the second day when the sports meet began, Shi Wangui arrived at the investigation spot. Li Jun and her small clique had nowhere else to go, they always hid in the small grove behind the restrooms to engage in their mischief.
When Shi Wangui approached, Li Jun was still holding an unfinished cigarette between her fingers. The three of them had their uniform pants rolled up high, and their jackets were tied around their slender waists. Each of them wore heavy, garish makeup that looked both strange and distinctive.
“Long time no see,” Shi Wangui said provocatively, crossing her arms. “My defeated rival.”
The grove had already begun to shed its leaves, and the ground was covered with a layer of brown foliage. A gentle breeze blew, causing the cigarette ash to tremble and fall, mingling with the scattered leaves before vanishing without a trace.
At the sight of Shi Wangui, Li Jun’s initial reaction was fear, but it was quickly replaced by anger. They outnumbered her, what was there to be afraid of? If it weren’t for the fact that fighting on campus was ill-advised, Li Jun would have already called her friends to jump her.
“Well, well,” Li Jun sneered, curling her lips. “If it isn’t Shi Wangui, our ‘Great Sage’ of a model student, the one who has a mother but no mother’s upbringing?”
Shi Wangui was still a freshman, but Li Jun and her gang were not. They were accustomed to bullying the weak. Li Jun had been beaten by Shi Wangui before, and others had been threatened as well, which was why they looked down on this “school bully” with a surprisingly kind heart.
“Hah.” Shi Wangui stepped closer, snatched the cigarette from Li Jun’s hand, threw it to the ground, and crushed it under her foot. “I was wondering who it was. So it’s my defeated rival again.”
Li Jun fumed, “Shi Wangui, don’t think you’re so untouchable. Don’t forget, there are three of us. Beating you to a pulp would be a piece of cake. Stop acting like a rabid dog in front of me.”
“I’d like to see if the three of you can take me on,” Shi Wangui retorted, grabbing Li Jun by the collar. “I don’t think you have the guts. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have hired people from outside the school to ambush me, right?”
Shi Wangui was confident Li Jun wouldn’t dare cause trouble with her on campus. Li Jun already had too many demerits on her record; one more incident, and the school might very well expel her.
“Get lost!” Li Jun cursed, then suddenly burst into laughter. “So you’re scared, aren’t you? Hahaha! You’re scared, you’re actually scared!”
The two girls standing beside Li Jun didn’t intervene, but they made sure not to lose face. Both of them despised Shi Wangui and supported Li Jun’s plan to teach her a lesson.
“Think whatever you want,” Shi Wangui rolled her eyes. “Just focus on being the loyal lapdog you are. If you’ve got the guts, come at me and get beaten up again.”
“The reason I came here today is to let you know, I heard someone’s offering money to have you taught a lesson. Should I take the job or not?”
Upon hearing this, Li Jun’s legs went weak. The people she had hired weren’t close to her they were just paid lackeys. But they couldn’t enter the school grounds. If Shi Wangui really decided to beat her up here, no one would be able to protect her. And who knew when their gang leader would return to school? This was basically a direct threat.
“You wouldn’t dare,” Li Jun stubbornly insisted. “Aren’t you afraid of being expelled?”
“Expelled?” Shi Wangui tightened her grip on Li Jun’s collar. “Who would dare report me? Or are you going to do it? Well then, I’ll be waiting to see.”
Faced with Shi Wangui’s provocation, the girl with loose hair beside her couldn’t hold back. “What exactly are you here for?”
Shi Wangui released her grip on Li Jun’s clothes, then clapped her hands as if brushing off bad luck. “Nothing much, just reminding you.” She crossed her arms and smiled. “Just making you face your own courage. Either you finish me off in one go, or wait for me to come after you.”
With that, Shi Wangui turned and walked away without looking back. She was certain that Li Jun had paid those people to confront her. Most troublemakers in their school knew she was good in a fight, but outsiders wouldn’t know and would dare to provoke her. It wasn’t that Shi Wangui was afraid to retaliate she just didn’t see the point. This time, there was no one to cover for her, and if she injured someone, she’d have to pay the medical bills herself. It simply wasn’t worth the trouble.
Even though there were no classes during the day due to the sports meet, it was still Thursday, and evening self-study was required. That night, because of a schedule change by the teacher, it became geography self-study. For first-year high school students who hadn’t yet chosen their academic tracks, geography wasn’t a core subject and only appeared once every two weeks.
As usual, the geography teacher brought topographic maps for the students to draw. Knowing that midterm exams were approaching, she didn’t linger in the classroom, leaving the time for the students to manage on their own.
So, when the first period of evening self-study ended, Sun Yi swapped seats with Wang Hu’s deskmate. The boy was relatively shy, and since Sun Yi’s original seat was in a quieter corner more suitable for studying, he agreed without hesitation.
“Wanwan,” Sun Yi turned around as soon as she sat down. “How about putting in a bit more effort this time and not coming in last?”
Although Sun Yi’s grades weren’t great either, she always liked to tease Shi Wangui about it.
Shi Wangui immediately covered her ears and frowned. “No talking about studying.”
From the start, Shi Wangui had planned to graduate high school, take all her savings, and leave Shi Qin far behind. Whether she went to college or not didn’t matter, she could support herself either way. Besides, she might not even make it to college.
“Alright, alright, no studying talk,” Sun Yi said, pulling a handful of fruit candies from her pocket and distributing some to Shi Wangui and Wang Hu. “My boyfriend bought these. This is Wanwan’s favorite green grape-filled candy.”
“Why does Shi Wangui get her favorite green grape flavor, while I get strawberry?” Wang Hu shook the strawberry candy in his hand. “I’m a manly guy, why give me such a pink candy?”
“Take it or leave it,” Sun Yi retorted, reaching to snatch the candy back from Wang Hu. “You’re even picky now.”
There was no way Wang Hu would let candy already in his hand be taken back. He quickly unwrapped it and popped it into his mouth, making a highly provocative expression, I ate it, what are you going to do about it?
“Wang Hu, I’ve always been curious,” Shi Wangui said, cutting short the squabble. “Why did your mom give you this name? Look at you, you’re not particularly tall, and you’re not that strong either. Instead of a tiger, wouldn’t a cat suit you better?”
“Ah,” Wang Hu sighed deeply. The question struck a chord. He’d always felt his name was too plain compared to others’. “My mom said she had a dream right before I was born, she dreamed of a tiger. ‘Wang Laohu’ (King Tiger) didn’t sound very nice, so she just named me Wang Hu (Tiger).”
“Your name is even more casual than mine, hahaha.” Sun Yi couldn’t hold back her laughter.
“What’s so funny? How did you all get your names?” Wang Hu asked.
“Mine is quite simple too. My dad’s surname is Sun, my mom’s surname is Yi, so I’m Sun Yi.” Sun Yi rested her cheek on one hand. “But I think my name, though simple, sounds better than your Wang Hu.”
“Hmph.” Wang Hu rolled his eyes. “What about Shi Wangui?”
Shi Wangui fell silent for a moment. Her name was given by her mother perhaps it held one meaning for her mother, and another for Shi Qin.
Wangui, wangui. Her mother hoped that no matter how late it was, there would always be someone returning for her. But Shi Qin probably wished she would never return.
“No special meaning, just came up with it casually.” Shi Wangui’s eyes dimmed instantly as she replied flatly.
“Ding ling ling.” The class bell rang.
Once the bell sounded, everyone returned to their seats and quieted down. The class could manage on its own without a teacher, but any noise would attract one, so the students knew exactly what to do.
As soon as the bell rang, it was time for Shi Wangui to sleep. She covered her head with her school uniform, creating a small, enclosed space for herself. Sleeping was always most comfortable in such conditions.
Just as Shi Wangui closed her eyes, wondering what kind of dream she might have, the clothing over her head was lifted.
The one who lifted it was Wen Youren, who had been called to the homeroom teacher’s office during the break. Because the senior students needed to take a simulated college entrance exam this weekend, all boarding students in the first and second years were required to go home.
“You’d better have a damn good reason.” Shi Wangui slowly opened her eyes, doing her best to suppress her emotions. Class had already started, and Wen Youren wasn’t an utterly despicable person she could afford to tolerate him about fifty percent.
“Class has started.” Wen Youren shifted Shi Wangui’s school uniform from covering her head to draping it over her body. Then, just as she was about to explode, he added, “The homeroom teacher notified us that we have to go home this weekend. No staying at school.”
“Why?” Shi Wangui suddenly sat up, her voice rising slightly, and the school uniform slipped to the floor.
The quiet atmosphere was broken, and many turned to look. The most noticeable reaction came from Sun Yi, who always suspected Wen Youren of bullying her good friend.
“What’s wrong, Wanwan?” Sun Yi immediately turned around. “Did Wen Youren bully you?” She then shot a hostile glare in Wen Youren’s direction.
Wen Youren ignored her, simply putting on his glasses and lifting his head slightly to meet Sun Yi’s gaze.
“It’s nothing.” Shi Wangui picked up the fallen school uniform, folded it, and laid it over her lap, her gaze gradually fading.
“Why?” Shi Wangui asked again in a low voice.
“The school is holding a simulated college entrance exam for the seniors this weekend. No one is allowed to stay on campus.” Wen Youren replied calmly.
Shi Wangui didn’t quite understand. Wasn’t the college entrance exam still over half a year away? She had always thought simulated exams only started in the final month, as that was how it had been in her junior high.
“Then I’ll just lock myself in the dorm and not come out. No one will know,” Shi Wangui muttered to herself.
Wen Youren: “Given your personality, I think I need to take you home.”
“No need!”
“I have to complete the task assigned by the teacher.”
“You really are an excellent lackey.”
“Oh, really? Well, thank you for the compliment.”
“…”
Shi Wangui fell silent. Tomorrow was the sports meet, and if she really had to go back, she’d probably need to return by around five in the afternoon. She didn’t know whether Shi Qin would be home or not, or whether that Wen Yiyue would be there either. In any case, once she got home, she’d either end up alone with Wen Youren someone she disliked or stuck with Wen Youren and two other people she couldn’t stand.
Either way, it wasn’t a good idea.
