Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 14
On Friday evening, Shi Wangui walked home. She hadn’t told Shi Qin about her return, partly because she had her own little calculations, if she didn’t mention it, there was a 50% chance Shi Qin wouldn’t be home. But what if mentioning it reduced the odds to 40%?
Shi Wangui left early, heading straight to her dorm to pack. Now, only she and Wen Youren lived there, making it feel empty and unusually quiet, as neither wanted to interact with the other.
As the weather gradually turned cooler, Shi Wangui had previously brought over some warm clothes. This trip home seemed like a good opportunity to fetch the rest of her winter wardrobe, so she wouldn’t need to return until winter break.
She emptied her suitcase and carefully folded each piece of clothing into her small cabinet. She had no idea how long she’d been tidying up, but when she finally finished and turned around, she saw Wen Youren sitting quietly in a chair.
“Damn,” Shi Wangui jumped, startled. “Are you a ghost? You didn’t make a sound coming into the dorm.”
Wen Youren was holding a book, absorbed in reading. When she had returned earlier, she noticed Shi Wangui engrossed in packing and saw no reason to greet her.
“Poor hearing is also an illness,” Wen Youren said, flipping a page before looking up with a faint smile. “Should I announce my presence every time I walk next time?”
“Get lost.” Shi Wangui had already finished packing. Since the sports meet had ended some time ago, there was no rush to leave today. She had no desire to go back with Wen Youren, so she grabbed her suitcase and walked out without another word.
Wen Youren simply watched Shi Wangui’s retreating figure, an unconscious smile tugging at her lips, before she got up, packed her own things, and headed home.
Shi Wangui’s gamble paid off neither Shi Qin nor Wen Yiyue was home. That meant for the next two days, she only had to endure one annoying person, Wen Youren, making life relatively comfortable.
The first thing she did upon arriving home was take a shower. The school’s public showers had weak water pressure and were always crowded, leaving her feeling unsatisfied and as if she never got fully clean, tossing and turning at night.
As the weather grew colder, the wind whistled through the second-floor window, rustling the branches and scattering leaves. Shi Wangui took a long, hot shower, emerging with steam rising from her body and her hair already dried, falling loosely around her shoulders.
The sound of the door opening downstairs suggested Wen Youren had returned. Shi Wangui didn’t know how she had gotten a key to the house, but since they were dormmates at school, it didn’t make much difference now.
Shi Wangui ran a comb through her hair, which had a slight natural wave. No matter how much she tried to straighten it after washing, it always curled back up by the next morning.
After combing her hair, she went to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. It was well-stocked, mostly with sandwiches, fruits, and the like. She wondered where Shi Qin and the others had gone and whether they’d be back tomorrow.
Not wanting to take any chances, Shi Wangui grabbed a bag and filled it with more than half of the fruits and sandwiches. The once-full fridge now looked noticeably emptier, though she left about a fifth of the contents behind.
But it still felt like she had left too much.
Shi Wangui struggled to pack everything into the suitcase, then gathered a few thick winter clothes and took a set of bedsheets to bring to school for a change. Last time, she had left in such a hurry that she forgot to take them, and the sheets hadn’t been changed for quite some time, making her sleep uncomfortable.
After finishing all that, she took a pack of instant noodles from the cupboard. She couldn’t cook, but boiling instant noodles was something she could manage. There were vegetables and eggs in the fridge, and Shi Wangui didn’t skimp on herself, she added a handful of greens and two eggs to the pot.
The aroma instantly filled the air. Shi Wangui loved eating instant noodles that smelled like junk food but were made by her own hands.
Just then, Wen Youren also came into the kitchen. When she saw Shi Wangui sitting at the table eating noodles, she paused for a moment, then casually took out a few ingredients from the kitchen.
While washing the rice, Wen Youren first scooped one spoonful, then after a moment’s thought, added two more. Once the rice was cooking, she walked over to Shi Wangui.
“They told me to take care of you,” Wen Youren said calmly. “So I’ll be cooking for you tomorrow and the day after. You don’t have to eat this instant noodles.”
“I like eating instant noodles. Mind your own business,” Shi Wangui retorted.
She had no interest in eating Wen Youren’s cooking. Last time was purely an accident, an accident! What did she mean by “they told me to take care of you”? More like she was trying to poison her.
“Suit yourself,” Wen Youren didn’t press further. This younger sister wasn’t bad at heart, but she had a sharp tongue and a pretty face. Deep down, she was actually a good person, not malicious at all.
“Fine, then I’ll eat.”
“…” Wen Youren closed her eyes helplessly. “Alright, remember to get up early tomorrow for breakfast.”
“I don’t eat breakfast.”
“…”
“Fine.”
“Since you said ‘fine,’ then I’ll have breakfast,” Shi Wangui bit into a piece of vegetable, continuing her “resistance.”
“…”
Wen Youren turned and left without another word.
Shi Wangui quietly finished her instant noodles. The evening was a bit chilly, and according to the weather forecast, it would rain tomorrow, probably in the evening.
Whatever. It wasn’t like she was going out tomorrow anyway. Sun Yi had plans, Wang Hu was busy doing who-knows-what all day, and Shi Qin wasn’t home either. Lying in bed playing on her phone sounded perfect.
Just as Shi Wangui lay down, Sun Yi’s video call came through.
“Why are you calling me? Weren’t you supposed to be watching a movie with your partner?” Shi Wangui lay in bed, phone pressed to her ear, eyes closed, speaking in a muffled voice.
“Wanwan, haven’t you checked the confession wall? That Li Jun is apologizing to you.”
“Huh?”
Shi Wangui was baffled. She opened her eyes abruptly, picked up her phone, and opened the school’s confession wall. Sure enough, the top post was from Li Jun, saying she was sorry to everyone, that she shouldn’t have bullied the weak, shouldn’t have ignored Shi Wangui’s words.
??? When did I ever tell her to listen to me?
“How strange!”
“I’m confused too. Didn’t you say you beat her up before? Is she out of her mind? Instead of holding a grudge, she’s apologizing to you and even said she’s returning all the protection money she collected.”
As Sun Yi chattered in her ear, Shi Wangui read through the entire post. Weird. Really weird. How could something so bizarre happen?
“Could it be her soul got swapped?”
“Hahaha, never mind that. I’m going back to the movie. I was just so puzzled I had to call you.”
“You!” Shi Wanggui hadn’t even finished speaking when the call was disconnected.
But this matter left her feeling rather baffled, though it was understandable. Someone like Li Jun, who lacked capability, would inevitably apologize out of fear after hearing Shi Wanggui say she would keep causing trouble for her.
Lying in bed, Shi Wanggui grew increasingly curious. Unable to figure it out, she decided to go to the balcony for some fresh air and see if any flowers had bloomed, admiring them by moonlight.
What she didn’t expect was that Wen Youren was also there, smoking.
Wen Youren was leaning against the railing, surrounded by a haze of smoke so pungent it overpowered the floral scent. She wore a black casual outfit; if not for the light illuminating her, she might have blended into the darkness.
“So you smoke,” Shi Wanggui remarked, having been there for a full minute without Wen Youren noticing, a clear sign of disregard.
However, Shi Wanggui truly detested the smell of smoke; it was repulsive and even made her nauseous.
Wen Youren tilted her head slightly. “Mm.”
“…”
“I want to smoke too.” Shi Wanggui walked over to Wen Youren’s side and finally got a clear look at her. She rarely wore glasses, but now she had them on. How absurd not wearing them during the day but putting them on at night.
Wen Youren flicked the ash from her cigarette, then extinguished it against the wall before tossing it into a nearby trash can. “You can’t smoke.”
“Why not?” Shi Wanggui tilted her head. “You’re smoking.”
Wen Youren lifted her head and shrugged lightly. “You and I are different.”
Shi Wanggui was puzzled. Wasn’t this backwards? Wen Youren was the top student, while she was the school bully. And now she’s telling her they’re different? Had the world changed just because she ate the instant noodles she cooked? First, Li Jun publicly apologized, and now the top student could smoke while the school bully couldn’t?
“How are we different?”
Wen Youren turned her head and smiled. “Because you’re still young, just a kid.”
“Get lost.” Shi Wanggui hated when Wen Youren acted like this. “You’re the kid. I’ve long since grown up.”
They were the same age, with Wen Youren only a few months older. What difference did it make? Why call her a kid?
“Fine, you’re an adult.” Wen Youren didn’t push further. “But smoking isn’t for you.”
“Don’t even think about smoking. There’s nothing good about it, it smells awful, harms your lungs, and is a waste of money and health.” Wen Youren added.
Shi Wanggui glanced at the cigarette butt in the trash. “Then why do you smoke?”
Could it be that Wen Youren had some hidden secret? They say smoking relieves a thousand worries. Shi Wanggui had tried it before but found it wasn’t for her. So, did Wen Youren have a thousand worries?
“Want to drink?” Shi Wanggui suddenly suggested. “I know where to get some alcohol.”
Wen Youren: “Why would you think I drink?”
Shi Wanggui pointed at the cigarette butt in the trash. “Aren’t you smoking?”
“Does smoking mean I drink?”
“Isn’t it common to do both in private?”
Shi Wanggui didn’t know why, but she felt certain Wen Youren would drink. Or perhaps Wen Youren wasn’t as “well-behaved” as she appeared. In the teachers’ eyes, she might be the model student; in the classmates’ view, the top scholar. But what about outside? In private?
“No drinking.” Wen Youren gently touched Shi Wangui’s forehead. “You don’t need to drink either, it’s bad for your health.” With that, he turned and went downstairs.
Shi Wangui: “…”
“Wen Youren!” By the time Shi Wangui reacted, he had already descended the stairs. She yelled furiously, “Who gave you the right to touch my head?!”
But he was long gone, completely out of sight. The weather had turned cold, and not even a bird in the sky answered her cries.
Yet, in that moment, Shi Wangui found herself thinking, no one had ever touched her head like that before, not even Sun Yi.
But then again, perhaps her mother had.
