Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 12
Shi Wangui stomped her foot on the floor, and the wooden boards creaked, like the faint ripples stirring in a long-stagnant heart. Wen Youren didn’t seem inclined to give them much time, standing at the doorway and jingling the keys in her hand.
With no other choice, Shi Wangui grabbed her friends and dashed out, quickly leaving Wen Youren far behind.
Sun Yi: “When the time comes, the three of us can team up and gather as many as we can. Maybe we can sell them for a few dozen yuan.”
“No way,” Shi Wangui cut in abruptly. “Plastic bottles aren’t worth much, but they can still buy a few steamed buns.”
“Right,” Wang Hu chimed in.
Sun Yi had never sold such things before and wasn’t very clear about the prices. She just thought that since a bottle of water cost two yuan and only contained some water, the bottle itself should be worth a little money.
“Ah!” Shi Wangui suddenly sighed.
Sun Yi took Shi Wangui’s hand and swung it as they wandered around. “What’s wrong?”
“Worried about money,” Shi Wangui confessed. “I know exactly how money comes in, but I’m completely clueless about how it goes out.”
Shi Wangui truly had no idea where her money disappeared to. All she did was eat and occasionally buy daily necessities, so how did the red gradually turn into green?
“Hahahaha,” Sun Yi laughed. “By the way, Wanwan, how are things between you and that Wen Youren now? Does she bully you?” Sun Yi suddenly asked.
Shi Wangui was suddenly reminded of that night. Now, she probably just didn’t like Wen Youren, plain and simple. But if asked why she didn’t like her, maybe she really couldn’t put it into words. Adolescent girls were like that they might suddenly develop a crush on someone, or maybe that person wore an outfit they didn’t like, and just like that, the fondness vanished.
By the time they reached the playground, most of the crowd had already dispersed. The sports meet had ended at four, and it was already five. The hour in between was mainly for evacuating students. Quite a few students had stayed behind to clean up, but the task was overwhelming. The playground, which had hosted thousands of people, was now littered with trash everywhere.
“The homeroom teacher is over there,” Wang Hu, sharp-eyed, spotted the teacher and their classmates standing at the far right edge. “Let’s go join them first.”
Since Shi Wangui had taken on the class monitor’s duties, she had brought several large bags with her to report to the homeroom teacher.
Just as they arrived, Wen Youren caught up right behind them. Shi Wangui frowned slightly. Hadn’t they left her behind? And wasn’t she supposed to be helping the Class 1 teacher? How could she still be tailing them so closely?
The homeroom teacher was discussing task assignments with the class monitor and couldn’t hide her smile when she saw a few more students arrive. “Shi Wangui, you’ve brought the supplies! I just counted, and our class has six participants.”
“Class monitor and academic committee, you two will be a team. Sun Yi and Wang Hu, you two. And then, ” The teacher paused, realizing she had initially planned to pair boys and girls together but ended up with two girls left and they didn’t get along.
“Teacher, I’ll team up with Shi Wangui,” Wen Youren stepped forward.
“Who wants to?” Shi Wangui was about to refuse but then said, “Fine.”
Since Wen Youren had taken the initiative to suggest it, Shi Wangui thought, she shouldn’t blame her later for not playing fair.
The playground was divided into many sections, and Shi Wangui and Wen Youren happened to be assigned to the area near the small gate, the very spot where Shi Wangui had fought others before.
Two people were supposed to share one large bag, but Shi Wangui didn’t carry it, instead tossing it directly to Wen Youren. She then picked up bottles from the ground and threw them at Wen Youren. Strangely, her aim was so precise that she never hit Wen Youren but always managed to land the bottles perfectly into the bag. Far from bothering Wen Youren, it actually helped her immensely.
Shi Wangui grew a bit angry. She had intended to bully someone and never considered herself a good person. Just as she prepared to throw another bottle, Wen Youren spoke up, “Stop being childish. Sell these, and I’ll take you to buy candy.”
“…”
“Listen carefully,” Shi Wangui suddenly yelled, “I’ve grown up! I don’t eat candy! OK?”
“Mm.” Wen Youren picked up another bottle and placed it in the bag. “Alright.”
Once again, Shi Wangui felt as though she were punching cotton utterly ineffective. She suddenly felt tired and just wanted it all to end. She no longer wanted to be around Wen Youren.
“Are you Shi Wangui?” Two unfamiliar girls had appeared behind Shi Wangui at some point.
They didn’t look like students from the school after all, the school didn’t permit such blatantly dyed hair, multiple ear piercings, or heavy makeup. Perhaps the sports day had loosened security at the school gate, giving these outsiders a chance to slip in.
Shi Wangui glanced sideways at them. “Yes.”
Most likely, she had bullied some underling, and now their “boss” was here to pick a fight.
“Good.” The taller girl suddenly laughed. “Meet us at the gate after evening self-study.”
Shi Wangui ignored them there was no need. She was a boarding student now, and boarding students weren’t allowed to leave campus after evening self-study. They could wait as long as they wanted.
The two girls didn’t cause trouble on the playground. They were troublemakers, but not fools. With so many teachers around, any move they made could land them in the police station. So, after noting Shi Wangui’s appearance and delivering their message, they left through the small gate.
“Shi Wangui.” Wen Youren suddenly called out, a strange smile curling at the corner of her lips. “You’re quite famous, huh.”
“Now you know.” Shi Wangui brushed the dust off her uniform sleeve. “Show some respect, or don’t blame me for beating you so hard you’ll be crawling to find your mom.”
Wen Youren set down the plastic bag and walked over to Shi Wangui, leaning in close. “How would you beat me?”
“With your height that doesn’t even reach my eyes?” Wen Youren added.
Shi Wangui wasn’t as tall as Wen Youren, but she wasn’t short either just average height. So, by extension, Wen Youren’s height was abnormal.
“You damn!” Provoked, Shi Wangui instinctively tightened her grip on the bottle in her hand. “You’re really asking for it.”
Wen Youren took the crumpled bottle from Shi Wangui’s hand, pressed it against her chest, and said, “If I unscrew the cap and cut a hole at the bottom, do you think the heartbeat I hear would be normal?”
“You!” Shi Wangui glanced down at where the bottle was pressed, her breathing growing rapid. She gritted her teeth and said, “Are you looking to die?”
Wen Youren took down the plastic bottle, then lowered her head to meet Shi Wangui’s gaze. Wen Youren’s eyes slanted slightly upward, and she rarely showed much emotion in her usual expression. Suddenly locking eyes like this felt more like a declaration of war.
“If you’ve got the guts, let’s settle this tonight,” Shi Wangui said, unable to bear the intensity of the stare.
“Don’t overthink it.” Wen Youren straightened her posture. “Your friends are here. I wasn’t planning to come pick up plastic bottles anyway. You can take these and sell them with your friends.”
“Consider it payment for watching a performance.”
Performance? What performance? Shi Wangui was puzzled. When had she ever performed for Wen Youren? That was absolutely impossible. If she were to perform anything, it would be “Wu Song Fights the Tiger,” with Wen Youren as the tiger.
But after saying this, Wen Youren left through the small gate. No one knew where she was going, and it seemed she really had no intention of following the homeroom teacher to sell the bottles.
“Wanwan!” Sun Yi called out loudly as soon as she reached the area Shi Wangui was responsible for. “The homeroom teacher said the bottle collector is at the entrance to the playground. Let’s go!”
Sun Yi had come alone. Wang Hu was guarding the bags, and since she and Shi Wangui were quite far apart, she had no idea what had just happened or that a few troublemakers had come to bother Shi Wangui earlier.
“Sure,” Shi Wangui replied. She was about to lift the plastic bag but then let go. “But I might need your help carrying it over.”
It wasn’t that the bottles were too heavy, but the opening of the bag was too large. If she dragged it by one loose corner, bottles would likely fall out all along the way, which would just waste more time.
“What do you mean, ‘need your help’? Are you trying to act distant with me?” Sun Yi sounded a bit annoyed as she grabbed the other side of the bag and glanced around. “Where’s Wen Youren?”
“She’s dead,” Shi Wangui said without changing her expression. “The money from selling this bag is all mine.”
The bottles weren’t worth much, but a full bag still had some weight to it. It just showed how many students there were and how thirsty everyone got during the sports meet. Even their class, which hadn’t participated, had bought three or four cases of water. The homeroom teacher had treated them, as each class had a water budget. The teacher had used all the funds to let the class monitor and sports committee member buy several cases of water.
Shi Wangui and the others had run off, but the class monitor had still set aside their share.
“If she’s dead, then forget about her,” Sun Yi agreed.
The old man collecting bottles was waiting at the playground entrance on his large tricycle. Normally, strangers weren’t allowed into the school, but today was an exception, so the old man had brought his biggest tricycle from home.
The price for plastic bottles was 1.5 yuan per kilogram. A large bag weighed about ten kilograms, but if you packed them tightly and crushed the bottles, you could get around fifteen to twenty kilograms.
Shi Wangui’s bag weighed a little over twelve kilograms. The old man, having collected a lot that day, was in a good mood and rounded it up to twelve and a half kilograms, giving her 19 yuan in total.
Sun Yi and Wang Hu got one yuan more than Shi Wangui, but Shi Wangui kept all the money to herself, while the other two had to split theirs.
“Making money is so hard,” Wang Hu sighed, shaking the crumpled ten-yuan bill in his hand. “We sweated buckets for just ten yuan.”
“Be grateful. At least it covers dinner,” Sun Yi said. “And the sports meet isn’t just one day.”
“I’m not coming tomorrow. I have something to do,” Shi Wangui suddenly announced.
Those people had come looking for her. Since they hadn’t found her after evening self-study ended, they would surely return. Though she didn’t know which idiot had called them for backup, Shi Wangui was no pushover either.
Moreover, Shi Wangui had already guessed who it was. She hadn’t done much recently just accepted payment to deliver justice once. Who else could it be but that fool?
