- Chapter 34 - Binding the Soul with Chenqing
The moment he grasped Chenqing once more, Lan Wangji was struck by a headache induced by a cacophony of deafening voices. He forced his mind to remain steady and listened intently.
However, he could not distinguish any specific words. It felt as if tens of thousands of people were speaking simultaneously, their emotions entirely out of control.
Lan Wangji could sense that Chenqing was desperate, trying to tell him something. But the more anxious the flute grew, the more the deafening roar threatened to tear through his eardrums, making it impossible to understand what was being said.
As soon as Xie Lian entered, he saw Lan Wangji enveloped in resentful energy, his eyes closed in what appeared to be severe agony. He immediately stepped forward and struck Lan Wangji’s hand, knocking it away from Chenqing.
After a few moments, Lan Wangji slowly regained his composure. Seeing that Wei Wuxian still showed no signs of waking, his anxiety deepened. Chenqing was clearly trying to communicate with him why couldn’t he hear it!
Lan Wangji’s face was like frost. His hands clenched into fists, and after a moment, he prepared to reach out and touch Chenqing again.
Xie Lian immediately cast Ruoye. “Ruoye, go.”
Ruoye shot toward Lan Wangji’s hand, binding it firmly. Lan Wangji summoned Bichen; a blue sword glare was about to slice through Ruoye when it was instantly blocked by a flash of silver light.
The two metals collided with a piercing screech, and Bichen was immediately returned to its sheath.
E-Ming also flew back into Hua Cheng’s hand.
Xie Lian retracted Ruoye and spoke immediately, “Second Young Master Lan, stay calm. If you continue like this, you will end up lying here just like Young Master Wei. If that happens, how will you save him?”
Lan Wangji looked down at Wei Wuxian, remaining silent.
Xie Lian knew that Lan Wangji could not hear anything else at this moment, and he knew what he cared about most. “There is still a way to save Young Master Wei.”
Lan Wangji immediately looked up at Xie Lian. “What way?”
Xie Lian asked, “Did you sense that Young Master Wei’s ghost flute was very agitated?”
Lan Wangji replied, “Yes.”
Xie Lian continued, “But you did not know why it was agitated.”
Lan Wangji said, “Yes.”
Xie Lian paused before saying, “If I am not mistaken, this ghost flute wants to form a bond with you.”
Lan Wangji looked at Xie Lian in confusion.
Xie Lian explained, “Normally, this ghost flute should only recognize one master and bind with one person. But clearly, Young Master Wei has cultivated a spirit within this flute, much like your zither.”
“Once there is a flute spirit, things are different. The spirit has its own thoughts and can achieve a connection between the flute and a person, perceiving everything the master perceives.”
“Since it is willing to bind with you, this indicates that Young Master Wei wants it to recognize you as its master.”
“The flute spirit can sense how important you are to its master, how much its master needs you or rather, how much he depends on you.”
Lan Wangji was somewhat surprised, but even more moved. However, now was not the time for such thoughts. Wei Ying had not yet woken up; saving him was the priority.
“Why can I not hear what it wants to tell me?”
Xie Lian answered, “Because the bond between you and the ghost flute is not yet complete.”
Lan Wangji asked, “How do I form the bond?”
Xie Lian said, “Take a drop of your heart’s blood and let it fall upon the flute. If the blood merges with the flute’s body, the bond is successful. If it does not merge, then it is unwilling to bind with you.”
Without the slightest hesitation, Lan Wangji immediately drew a drop of his own heart’s blood and let it fall onto Chenqing. Sure enough, as soon as the blood touched the flute, it merged and vanished instantly. For a moment, Lan Wangji felt a surge of resentful energy invade his heart before it vanished just as quickly. The bond was successful.
Xie Lian said, “Try again. Remember, keep your mind steady. Your spirit must not falter, otherwise you too will suffer backlash.”
Lan Wangji nodded slightly. “Thank you.”
After the bond was successful, Lan Wangji grasped Chenqing again. The deafening roar returned, but this time, he could hear it clearly: it was the howling of ghosts. There were many, too many to count.
Hua Cheng sheathed E-Ming and looked at Xie Lian. “Gege, why did you tell him?”
Xie Lian replied, “San Lang, if the person lying there were me, what would you do?”
Hua Cheng said, “That would not happen.”
Xie Lian smiled and said, “If I hadn’t spoken, Second Young Master Lan would surely have suffered backlash. Now that I have spoken, perhaps both of them can be saved.”
“It would be a pity for two affectionate people filled with justice to ultimately die from the backlash of ten thousand ghosts, with even their souls shattered completely.”
Lan Wangji’s head felt as if it were splitting from the roar of the ghosts, but he kept his spirit steady and listened carefully. Finally, he heard Wei Wuxian’s name.
The ghosts had clearly sensed the presence of another living person, and many instantly rushed toward Lan Wangji.
Ignoring his physical and mental agony, Lan Wangji spoke coldly, “Get out!”
But his words, though like frost and sharp swords, posed no threat to them.
“Wei Ying!”
Wei Wuxian clutched his head, his body in such agony that it felt as if it were being torn apart. Yet in his heart, he kept calling out: Lan Zhan, I’m in so much pain. Where are you? Why haven’t you come?
Wei Wuxian was all too familiar with this feeling; he had died this way in his previous life. Back then, all hope had been extinguished, and he had no will to live. If they wanted to devour him, he would let them.
But now, he did not want to die. Lan Zhan was still waiting for him. He could not die like this. But he truly felt he could no longer hold on. It hurt so much!
Lan Wangji beat back the resentful energy coming at him with both hands while stumbling forward, shouting loudly, “Wei Ying!”
It was pitch black, a darkness where one could not see one’s own hand, and his ears were filled with the shrieks of ghosts. Yet Lan Wangji could simply feel it—Wei Ying must be here.
The surrounding resentful energy seemed to sense Lan Wangji’s determination. Nothing could shake him. Yet the ghosts did not want to give up this fresh soul that had finally been delivered to their mouths, nor did they want him to wake Wei Wuxian.
More and more ghosts rushed toward Lan Wangji, crashing into him simultaneously. Lan Wangji, already in pain and failing in strength, was knocked to one knee. He spat out blood, supporting himself with one hand on the ground.
When he looked up again, his eyes were even colder and more severe, yet even more unwavering!
The fact that they were so agitated did it not prove that they didn’t want him to discover something or wake someone? Wei Ying must be here!
Forcing himself to stand, he ignored the blood at the corner of his mouth and his blood-stained robes. He continued to use his astonishing strength to drive away the clouds of resentful energy.
Hanguang-jun the meticulous, elegant gentleman, the model of virtue—was now in a state of total disarray. There was not a clean spot on him, and his strength was severely overextended. Yet the steps he took remained steady and firm.
As soon as Shi Qingxuan arrived, he saw Lan Wangji coughing up blood and slumped over Wei Wuxian’s body. Resentful energy was soaring, nearly enveloping them both. He was frantic.
How could this be? Young Master Wei hadn’t woken up yet, and now Second Young Master Lan was like this too?
If this continued, both of them would die!
He grabbed Xie Lian’s hand and asked anxiously, “Your Highness, what is happening? Why has Second Young Master Lan become like this?! Didn’t you say there was a way to save Young Master Wei? Could they both die together?”
