- Chapter 33 - The Patriarch Suffers Backlash
Wei Wuxian was fully focused on controlling Wen Ning and could not move in time to avoid the giant wave. Seeing that the colossal swell was about to strike him, Lan Wangji immediately withdrew his zither, mounted his sword, and swooped in to pull Wei Wuxian into his embrace, narrowly avoiding the impact.
After missing its target, the Water Abyss fell into a total frenzy. In an instant, four more massive waves rose to attack the pair. Wei Wuxian’s flute melody never faltered, and Lan Wangji steered his sword to dodge them with ease.
Having broken free from his restraints, Wen Ning’s resentful energy surged. He leapt back into the water to continue his fierce struggle against the resentful spirits beneath the surface.
Wei Wuxian immediately shifted his flute’s aim toward the lake’s surface. Lan Wangji summoned the Wangji Qin once more to join him, their instruments playing in a harmonious duet.
When Wei Wuxian cast the Stygian Tiger Seal into the water, it instantly attracted a vast amount of resentful energy. The water that had been racing toward the center of the lake began to slow.
Wen Ning moved close to the Stygian Tiger Seal, tearing apart every spirit that approached.
Wei Wuxian continuously manipulated the Seal to disperse the resentful energy at the lake’s center, while Lan Wangji used the zither’s sound to suppress the water pillars and waves that sought to rise.
Finally, the surface of the lake gradually returned to a state of calm. The pillars and waves no longer attacked. Wei Wuxian slumped backward, exhausted, and Lan Wangji immediately caught him.
After quickly throwing out several talismans, Lan Wangji flew back to the shore on his sword.
The Water Abyss had been severely wounded and was temporarily subdued, but completely eradicating it would still require time.
Lan Wangji took a medicinal pill from his Qiankun sleeve and immediately pressed it into Wei Wuxian’s mouth.
Wen Ning returned to the shore from the lake. He looked at Wei Wuxian with deep anxiety, but due to his stiff facial muscles, his speech was not particularly smooth: “Young Master Wei… he…”
Lan Wangji did not look at Wen Ning, only saying softly, “Thank you.”
He carried Wei Wuxian onto Bichen and flew toward the Cloud Recesses. Xie Lian and the others followed immediately.
The Jingshi (Quiet Room)
A physician from the Lan Sect was summoned. After feeling Wei Wuxian’s pulse, he shook his head and sighed.
Lan Wangji anxiously caught the physician’s arm as he prepared to leave. “How is Wei Ying? Why do you shake your head?”
The physician was startled by Lan Wangji’s intensity; he had never seen Hanguang-jun in such a state of disarray. With some trepidation, he said, “His heart meridians have suffered some damage. Fortunately, the pill was administered in time to protect them. However, the resentful energy within his body is rampaging. The situation is not optimistic. For now, I will prescribe some calming medicine and let him rest.”
Having said that, he went out to prepare the prescription.
Lan Qiren arrived at the Jingshi just as the physician reached the courtyard gate. He stopped the man to ask about the situation, and his brow furrowed instantly. Truly, the Stygian Tiger Seal was a cursed object that brought only harm.
Lan Wangji sat by the bed, holding Wei Wuxian’s hand and continuously transferring spiritual power. When Lan Qiren saw this, he could not stop him. He could only watch as Lan Wangji, eventually exhausted, collapsed by the bedside, his hand still deathly gripped around Wei Wuxian’s.
Lan Qiren was so frustrated he felt a pang in his chest, and he had to be supported by disciples back to the Elegant Room to rest.
Hua Cheng took one look at Wei Wuxian and knew: this was a backlash.
Shi Qingxuan asked anxiously, “What do we do? Oh, right! I have many spiritual medicines in my Wind Master Hall. I’ll go get them.”
As he prepared to leave, He Xuan grabbed his arm and shook his head. “Qingxuan, it’s useless.”
Shi Qingxuan asked, “Then what should we do? We can’t just watch Young Master Wei die, can we?”
He Xuan replied, “He won’t necessarily die.”
Xie Lian added, “In Young Master Wei’s current condition, he can only rely on himself.”
Shi Qingxuan looked at He Xuan and then at Xie Lian in confusion. “What do you mean? Young Master Wei has to save himself? How? He’s already in this state.”
Xie Lian patted Shi Qingxuan’s shoulder. “A blessing in disguise, perhaps.”
Wei Wuxian felt as though he were in a place of absolute darkness, where the sun never shone and he could not see his own hand before his face.
Countless voices rang in his ears laughing, crying, cursing, shouting…
His head felt as if it were splitting. He clutched his head in agony and shouted, “Get out! All of you, get out!”
“Wei Wuxian, stop struggling. You are about to die. Hahahaha! Once you are dead, your soul will be my finest meal.”
“Does it hurt? Is it unbearable? Stop struggling, and the pain will cease.”
“Do you know how long we have waited for this day? Come, follow me, and you shall be free.”
Wei Wuxian roared, “Get out! Who are you? Where is Lan Zhan?! I want to find Lan Zhan!”
“Stop looking. You won’t find him. You should just give up. Why put yourself through such pain? What is so bad about dying? You’ve died once already, anyway. What does it matter if you die again? Hahahaha!”
Wei Wuxian snapped, “What the hell do you know! I want Lan Zhan! Where is Lan Zhan!”
“Sigh! You really won’t listen to advice. Fine, then I’ll tell you the truth: your Lan Zhan… he doesn’t want you anymore.”
Wei Wuxian shouted, “Impossible! It’s impossible for Lan Zhan to not want me! Shut up!”
“See? I tell you the truth and you won’t listen. Why don’t you call out again and see if he answers you? Hahahaha!”
In the darkness, Wei Wuxian clutched his head and roared continuously, “Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan, where are you!”
No matter how Wei Wuxian screamed, he did not hear the voice he longed for, nor did he see the person he wanted to see. His heart sank further into the abyss.
“Lan Zhan! Do you really not want me anymore?”
“He really doesn’t want you. I told you, but you wouldn’t believe it. Now you should believe it. Stop struggling and hand your soul over to us.”
Wei Wuxian curled up on the ground, his hands over his head as he murmured despondently, “Get out…”
The voices continued to repeat in his ears, stimulating him and waiting for him to collapse again, to lose control, and for them to devour his soul.
Day after day, Lan Wangji transferred spiritual power to Wei Wuxian and played the zither for him. During this time, Lan Qiren visited many times, and even Lan Xichen came several times, but none could dissuade Lan Wangji.
One month later.
Wei Wuxian still showed no signs of waking. The Water Abyss appeared to be recovering and was ready to surge again.
On this day, a disciple reported that the waters of Biling Lake were beginning to show faint signs of movement. Although the water had not yet turned black, it was only a matter of time. If they did not take advantage of this moment to eradicate the Water Abyss once and for all, it would be even harder to eliminate once it fully recovered.
Wei Wuxian had not yet woken. Though Lan Wangji did not want to leave his side, he knew that if he did not handle the Water Abyss now, all their previous efforts would be in vain. Lan Wangji did not want Wei Wuxian’s injuries to be for nothing, nor did he want the Water Abyss to have another chance to harm anyone.
Looking at Wei Wuxian lying on the bed, Lan Wangji released his hand. He walked to the desk, placed his hands on the zither, and began the task he repeated every day.
When the piece finished, Lan Wangji rose and put away the Wangji Qin. He picked up Chenqing and placed it in Wei Wuxian’s hand, intending to go to Biling Lake alone.
However, just as Lan Wangji placed Chenqing into Wei Wuxian’s hand and before he could let go while they were both holding the flute, Lan Wangji suddenly felt a vibration from Chenqing.
Chenqing was a first-class spiritual tool; it possessed a spirit and recognized its master. Logically, when Wei Wuxian was unable to use it, it should have been like Suibian—no one should have been able to feel its resonance or use it.
Yet Lan Wangji clearly felt the vibration of Chenqing!
