- Chapter 35 - A Blessing in Disguise
Xie Lian’s brow furrowed as he looked at the two men lying there. He spoke half to the others and half to himself, “They will not die. We must believe in them.”
Shi Qingxuan, filled with anxiety, walked to the bedside to check on them. Clouds of resentful energy surrounded the pair, but their hands were tightly clasped together. Suddenly, something between them flashed for a brief moment—a light so fleeting that Shi Qingxuan even wondered if he had hallucinated it.
He turned to look at Xie Lian and the others. “Did you all see that just now? Something flashed between their hands. What are they holding? They’re gripping it so tightly.”
It was no wonder Shi Qingxuan couldn’t see clearly; Chenqing was blocked by Wei Wuxian’s arm on one side and Lan Wangji’s body on the other. The only visible part was being held deathly tight by both of them.
The other three had naturally seen it as well; it was the spirit of the ghost flute.
He Xuan remarked, “That is the flute spirit. They cannot die.”
Sure enough, the resentful energy surrounding them began to grow increasingly agitated, as if fighting a desperate resistance against something. However, it did not hold out for long before it was all absorbed by Chenqing.
At the same time, Wei Wuxian let out a great shout: “Lan Zhan!”
Immediately following this, he opened his eyes. Having been in the darkness for so long, he was not yet accustomed to the light upon first opening them, so he raised a hand to rub his eyes.
Shi Qingxuan said excitedly, “Young Master Wei, you’re awake!”
Wei Wuxian looked at Shi Qingxuan and was about to force a smile when he felt a heavy weight move on top of him. Immediately after, the scent of blood filled his nostrils.
Looking down, he saw a large patch of blood on his chest. Lan Wangji was slumped over him. Wei Wuxian’s three souls and seven po, which had only just returned, felt as if they were about to leave his body again from the shock.
He shook Lan Wangji vigorously. “Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan! Wake up!”
Lan Wangji was shaken awake by the violent movement. Feeling somewhat dizzy, he slowly raised his head and met Wei Wuxian’s anxious gaze. “Wei Ying!”
He instantly became fully alert. He sat up and grabbed Wei Wuxian’s hand, using his spiritual power to inspect him.
Wei Wuxian pulled his hand back to stop him. “Lan Zhan, don’t waste your spiritual power. I’m fine now.”
Lan Wangji asked, “Is there any discomfort?”
Wei Wuxian smiled and said, “There is no discomfort. In fact, I feel this body has become stronger. It seems like there are some spiritual power fluctuations beginning in my dantian.”
Xie Lian walked over to Wei Wuxian’s side and said with a smile, “Congratulations, Young Master Wei. This time, by devouring ten thousand ghosts, you have undergone a complete transformation. You have opened the sea of qi in your dantian; forming a golden core is now only a matter of time.”
Both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji looked toward Xie Lian.
Xie Lian explained, “Second Young Master Lan has been continuously transferring spiritual power to you, and he used his heart’s blood to bind with the ghost flute, helping you devour the ghosts and reshape your constitution. With this new foundation for cultivation, you are no longer restricted by age. If he continues to provide spiritual power and considering your excellent natural talent, I believe you will soon form a core.”
Wei Wuxian looked at Lan Wangji, then back at Xie Lian. “Really? No wonder I felt a flash of light rush into my body just now, and then suddenly my spiritual power surged, absorbing all those ghosts.”
Lan Wangji stared at Xie Lian. “Is it truly possible to form a core?”
Xie Lian nodded. “Indeed. Spiritual force can be borrowed, just as spiritual power can be borrowed for one’s own use to aid in rebirth.”
Lan Wangji immediately took Wei Wuxian’s hand to begin transferring spiritual power, but Wei Wuxian withdrew it at once to stop him. “Lan Zhan! There’s no rush. You look much worse than I do right now. Don’t waste any more spiritual power!”
Xie Lian smiled and said nothing more.
Shi Qingxuan leaned in and said, “I think Young Master Wei is right. Second Young Master Lan, you look like you need rest more. It’s better to wait until you’ve recovered before lending spiritual power to Young Master Wei. Otherwise, if you fail to lend the power and collapse yourself, what then?”
Lan Wangji said faintly, “It is no matter.”
Wei Wuxian, however, was not pleased. “What do you mean, ‘no matter’! Look at the blood on me and on you. You call this ‘no matter’? Didn’t you say you were going to give me a formal status? Are you trying to make me a young widower?”
Lan Wangji: “…”
Seeing that Lan Wangji had finally stopped his stubborn attempt to transfer spiritual power, Wei Wuxian said cheerfully, “Lan Zhan, did I sleep for a very long time? I feel like my legs have gone numb from lying down, and I’m hungry.”
Lan Wangji gave an “mn,” stood up, and left the Jingshi.
Only then did Shi Qingxuan sit by the bed and say, “Young Master Wei, you’ve finally woken up. If you hadn’t, I think Second Young Master Lan would have followed you to the grave.”
Wei Wuxian stretched and said, “Then Lord Wind Master doesn’t know me, Wei Wuxian, well enough. Am I the kind of person who dies so easily? Go ask those two Ghost Kings if they would even take me.”
Shi Qingxuan laughed. “Hahahaha! Heishui definitely wouldn’t take you. You’re more suited for Crimson Rain Sought Through Flower’s Ghost City; it’s lively there.”
Hua Cheng remarked faintly, “Ghost City is not a place just anyone can go.”
Wei Wuxian patted Shi Qingxuan’s shoulder and said, “See, Lord Wind Master? Neither of these Ghost Kings will take me, so how could I possibly die? I still have to be a ‘scourge that lives for a thousand years.'”
Shi Qingxuan said, “What ‘scourge living for a thousand years’? Young Master Wei, you are no scourge. Don’t speak of yourself like that. I’m still waiting for the day you both ascend so we can meet again in the Heavenly Court.”
Wei Wuxian rose from the bed and looked at Chenqing in his hand. “I hope there will be a chance. But before ascending, there are still things to be done.”
Xie Lian naturally understood what Wei Wuxian meant and asked, “Young Master Wei, you’ve only just woken up. Shouldn’t you rest more?”
Wei Wuxian twirled Chenqing as he walked toward the door. “Didn’t Daozhang Xie say I’ve been transformed? My body is better than before; there’s no need for rest. I want to go and completely eradicate the Water Abyss now, and then diligently cultivate a golden core. That way, I can be with Lan Zhan with more peace of mind.”
Mo Xuanyu’s spiritual power had been so low it was negligible, so since his rebirth, Wei Wuxian had never felt the sensation of having spiritual power in his body.
But now, although he didn’t have much, he could clearly feel the fluctuations of spiritual power within him, especially in his dantian. That long-lost feeling was very comfortable.
In a way, he had to thank the Water Abyss. If it weren’t for this life-or-death crisis, how could he have had the chance to reshape his constitution?
He had been wondering how to make this body stronger, and this could be considered a blessing in disguise.
He gripped Chenqing tightly, the corners of his mouth turning up. “Well done!”
Chenqing seemed to sense the praise; its red tassel swayed almost imperceptibly.
Tucking Chenqing into his waist, Wei Wuxian left the Jingshi without looking back.
He intended to go to Biling Lake alone. After all this time, the Water Abyss was likely nearing recovery. He had to eliminate it before it fully regained its strength to end the trouble forever!
Although he had only just recovered from a serious injury, his situation was clearly more optimistic than before. Lan Zhan, however, was not. His current state required rest more than anything. Therefore, Wei Wuxian decided to go alone to face the Water Abyss once more.
