God is Being Pampered by the Group - Chapter 8
Chapter 8: In Broad Daylight Under a Clear Sky
Bravery is Everyone’s Responsibility
As the sun was about to sink below the horizon, the car drove back toward the neighborhood where Guan Zhou lived, heading straight into the orange-red glow of the sunset.
It was an old residential quarter, located far from any subway stations and not in a particularly prosperous area. Given Guan Zhou’s financial situation, he certainly couldn’t afford a home in the city center where housing prices were exorbitant.
Fortunately, while Guan Zhou wasn’t particularly wealthy, he didn’t mistreat himself either. He hadn’t made an impulsive choice to live in a cheaper, chaotic district where public security was a concern; those were the places truly deserving of the label “slums.”
In any city, where there is a bright and beautiful side, there is a dark and chaotic one. Although the fight against crime is publicized every day, there are always those who, harboring a sense of luck, frantically test the boundaries of the law.
The car didn’t drive directly into the neighborhood but first went to a market about a kilometer away.
Things were different now. If he were alone, Guan Zhou figured he would just slap together a random dinner. But now that there was another person at home, Guan Zhou couldn’t bear to let Bai Yan eat junk food with him; his conscience would be condemned.
The mere thought of it made Guan Zhou’s conscience ache slightly.
So, over the past few days, Guan Zhou had rarely picked up his “max-level” cooking skills. Watching Bai Yan eat the food he prepared with his own hands, Guan Zhou felt a strange sense of satisfaction.
What the hell? Had he awakened some weird attribute?!
Before Bai Yan could look over, Guan Zhou immediately reined in his increasingly strange thoughts.
“What do you want to eat tonight?”
Currently, Guan Zhou was pushing a cart, walking through the massive market with Bai Yan.
It was divided into many sections: snacks, fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood, pantry staples, and so on.
“Anything is fine,” Bai Yan replied.
Guan Zhou picked up a box of strawberries from a nearby shelf. “Do you like these?” Then, remembering Bai Yan’s background, he simply placed the strawberries into the cart and said, “They’re delicious.”
Just like that, Bai Yan watched Guan Zhou explain how delicious this and that was while unhesitatingly tossing items into the cart…
So, will there be anything left of your wages today?
However, seeing Guan Zhou’s high-spirited appearance, Bai Yan didn’t disturb his shopping pleasure. Just as every tough guy has a “little princess” living in his heart, perhaps this was where Guan Zhou’s interests lay.
Finally, though, Bai Yan gave him a slight reminder: “If you buy any more, we won’t be able to carry it.”
Guan Zhou looked at the overflowing cart and finally nodded with a smile. “Okay.”
Leaving the market, Guan Zhou carried two bulging bags in his left and right hands. When Bai Yan offered to help, he refused without hesitation.
“It’s fine, it’s not heavy at all.”
As they were crossing the plaza in front of the market toward their car, a scream suddenly pierced the air:
“Robbery!!”
All the pedestrians turned their heads and saw a woman fallen on the ground. At the same time, a man dressed in black, wearing a mask and hat that obscured his face, was running away with a woman’s bag that looked expensive at a glance.
In broad daylight and under a clear sky, to dare to commit robbery in the street—this was outrageous! Some enthusiastic and impulsive pedestrians, upon seeing the glint of a knife in the black-clad man’s other hand, all silently took a step back.
Never mind, the glorious task of catching a robber should be left to the righteous police.
The onlookers didn’t forget to take out their phones to take photos and videos.
The man in black brandished his dagger. Seeing the pedestrians making way, the corners of his mouth beneath the mask curled up. He had been eyeing that woman for a long time and finally seized the chance to succeed. After this job, he probably wouldn’t have to worry about food for a month.
Suddenly, the man in black saw his escape route blocked by two people. He immediately brandished his cold blade and barked fiercely:
“Get the hell out of my way!”
These two people were, of course, Bai Yan and Guan Zhou. They hadn’t expected the robber to rush toward them.
Guan Zhou frowned. His solemn gaze swept over the sharp dagger in the robber’s hand. Having no intention of sacrificing himself, he stepped a few paces to the side while calling out to the motionless Bai Yan.
Bai Yan glanced at him. Seeing the vigilance and worry in Guan Zhou’s eyes, he paused. Without a word, he silently followed suit and moved out of the way.
With the escape route clear, the man in black couldn’t help but grin. However, just as he accelerated to rush past them, a foot suddenly shot out.
The man in black tripped and fell to the ground. Guan Zhou stood there dumbfounded; he had seen with his own eyes that Bai Yan was the one who stuck his foot out…
Before he could think, Guan Zhou dropped the two bags and tried to pull Bai Yan back. The tripped man in black quickly turned around, his embarrassment turning into rage as he swung his sharp dagger high.
In the nick of time, Guan Zhou’s hand missed Bai Yan. He saw Bai Yan take a step forward instead, getting even closer to the fierce robber. Then, Bai Yan reached out and tapped a single finger against the robber’s knife-wielding wrist…
Clang.
The dagger fell. The originally vicious robber’s fierce expression vanished completely. He clutched his wrist, wailing in what looked like extreme agony.
This series of changes was dizzying. Guan Zhou blinked, finally remembering Bai Yan’s identity and the unscientific abilities this silver-haired beauty possessed.
Immediately, Guan Zhou bravely lunged at the robber, kicked the dagger away, and pinned the man in black firmly to the ground.
“Wee-woo, wee-woo”
At that moment, a police car, called by a bystander, arrived rapidly. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
When the police sternly handcuffed the man in black and learned the details of the event, they gave Guan Zhou a great deal of praise.
Bai Yan picked up the two large bags Guan Zhou had dropped and came to his side. Guan Zhou naturally took them back. Facing the police’s praise and the victim’s gratitude, Guan Zhou just chuckled and said that being brave and doing what’s right is everyone’s responsibility.
Because the sight of Guan Zhou lunging at the robber was so impactful, the people present overlooked Bai Yan’s small movements from earlier.
Now, seeing the robber caught, the surrounding crowd sighed with lingering fear, while simultaneously uploading their videos to the internet to gain traffic and attention.
The incident ended. The police drove away with the robber, and the crowd began to disperse in small groups.
Guan Zhou and Bai Yan finally made it back to the car and drove home.
On the way, Guan Zhou began to lecture Bai Yan with earnest, painstaking advice:
“I know you have ‘special powers,’ but in that kind of dangerous situation, the most important thing is to protect your own safety first.”
“Besides, in public like that, it’s easy for people to notice that you’re different. It’s too dangerous. You’re not allowed to do that again.”
“Do you hear me?”
“…”
Whether any ill-intentioned person noticed Bai Yan’s difference was unknown. However, when the video of the robber being caught was posted online, the netizens’ attention galloped off in a completely different direction, and not even eight horses could pull them back.
