God is Being Pampered by the Group - Chapter 9
Chapter 9: The Cat Demon
The Thief
Yang Xinran is a drama-loving, internet-addicted young woman and a video editor/uploader. She is somewhat famous on the Watermelon Website though she gave herself that title, her followers just broke the one-million mark!
While having several hundred thousand followers is common on Watermelon and being a “drop in the ocean” isn’t usually cause for alarm, Yang Xinran couldn’t help but be ecstatic.
At first, she was just an internet addict who loved binge-watching TV dramas. However, she gradually discovered that she always liked “unpopular pairings” (niche CPs). She could barely find any fellow fans, let alone fan content; it was enough to make her shake with frustration.
On an impulse, Yang Xinran took matters into her own hands. She spent an entire night using self-taught editing techniques to complete her first masterpiece. Naturally, the content was “food” for her favorite niche pairing. Though the quality was painful to look at, it was a result born of desperation.
But from that moment on, Yang Xinran fell in love with editing.
Today, besides her daily drama watching, her editing content is no longer just for niche pairings. Sometimes, on a whim, she’ll make a variety-style video; in short, as long as she’s interested, she’ll do it she’s quite headstrong.
Now that her followers have hit one million, Yang Xinran was pondering making a special video to celebrate. She had just finished the latest episode of a hit drama. The fourth male lead was quite pitiful, giving so much silently but never winning the female lead’s heart. He’d be better off with the female subordinate who had a crush on him…
Yang Xinran thought about how to edit the video while taking out her phone to search for inspiration online.
“Huh? ‘In Broad Daylight, Under a Clear Sky, Street Robbery Met with a Lesson’? What the heck.”
A local topic was pushed to her feed. Joining in on the excitement is human nature; before Yang Xinran realized it, she had clicked the topic open.
The person who wrote the title was clearly very calculating. A single sentence clarified the excitement and the reversal it was, one might say, soul-stirring, firmly grasping the audience’s desire to find out what happened.
While secretly absorbing the experience, Yang Xinran watched. It was a video, and the content had clearly been meticulously produced; it was a fellow editor’s work, Yang Xinran saw through it at a glance.
The beginning was a woman’s scream right, that’s post-production dubbing. Then the camera shook, revealing the woman fallen on the ground and the man in black who was clearly the robber. The glint of the knife in his hand made the audience’s hearts tighten.
In such a dangerous situation, it wasn’t easy for bystanders to act; they could only watch the robber arrogantly leave. But in the next moment, the robber was suddenly tripped. His angry turn to attack made the audience’s nerves tense again, not daring to breathe.
However, the reversal appeared quickly. Someone finally lunged forward heroically, pinning the robber down firmly with their body.
Yang Xinran saw the police appear and knew the incident had ended. She opened the comments section; it was unanimous praise for the hero who fought the robber.
Guan Zhou had succeeded in drawing everyone’s attention to himself, thereby fading Bai Yan’s presence. After all, the only noteworthy thing Bai Yan did was stick out a foot to trip the robber. The subsequent action of moving toward the robber and extending a finger happened in a flash; no one would think in the bizarre direction of “this person isn’t right, they have special powers.”
Yang Xinran looked at this “hero.” He was handsome, which was a good gimmick for attracting an audience. However, Yang Xinran shifted her gaze, replayed the video, paused at a certain frame, and pinched to zoom with two fingers.
She was looking at the person standing with the “hero.” He looked like the hero’s companion; he was the one who suddenly tripped the robber, creating the opportunity for the hero to act. He wore a hat and a mask, but a long mane of silver-white hair poured out from the edge of the hat.
Besides being a drama-loving internet addict, Yang Xinran was actually a closet “white-hair lover.” But silver hair is hard for anyone to pull off. Yang Xinran once watched a drama about elves where the setting dictated silver hair; while everyone else was licking the screen for the lead’s beauty, Yang Xinran always felt something was “off.”
Looking at the enlarged video frame now, Yang Xinran’s expression dazed for a moment. She had never felt anyone looked so natural and harmonious with silver hair as the person in this video. Aside from that beautiful silver-white hair, she also saw the eyes beneath the hat.
The eyelashes were heavy with snow, and the pupils were a faint gold. The exposed skin was also excessively fair; if he didn’t look healthy, Yang Xinran would have almost thought he had albinism.
At the same time, even though the mask obscured the person’s full appearance, Yang Xinran dared to bet with her picky eyes from years of binge-watching—that this person’s face was absolutely stunning!
Yang Xinran became excited after a long time, her eyes glowing as if she had discovered some unknown, world-class treasure.
She exited the video and searched within the city. Unsurprisingly, she quickly found related content videos and photos though the view counts weren’t as high as the first promoted topic.
Yang Xinran quickly selected the videos and photos she liked. She already knew what to do for this video. Usually, she edited drama content, but now she was going to do something different, hehe…
…
Meanwhile, having just returned from the market, Guan Zhou, unaware that the video of his “bravery” had been posted online and was drawing attention, parked the car and headed back to his small apartment with the two bags and Bai Yan.
By now, the sky had dimmed, and the hallway was pitch black. However, after sensing footsteps, the lights flickered and glowed faintly.
At the doorstep, Guan Zhou first set down one bag and took out his keys to unlock the door, saying to Bai Yan:
“I almost forgot, tomorrow let’s go get a key made for you to use…”
As he spoke, Guan Zhou opened the door and stepped inside first to turn on the light. With a “click,” the light came on, and simultaneously, Guan Zhou’s voice came to an abrupt halt.
He stared at the interior, which was a mess as if a typhoon had passed through or a thief had broken in. He was dumbfounded.
In the next second, his expression turned grim. He blocked Bai Yan and quickly pulled his phone from his pocket.
“Don’t go in. I’ll call the police first”
Everything was fine when they left this morning. Now the room was in total disarray, various items scattered all over the floor. The only bedroom door was wide open; he couldn’t see the situation inside, but it was certainly a mess.
The only explanation was that a thief had broken in while they were away. Guan Zhou was now very glad he hadn’t left Bai Yan home alone this morning.
However, Bai Yan stepped directly past him and walked slowly into the house.
“Hey”
Guan Zhou couldn’t stop him in time, so he had to follow. Looking at the emergency number he hadn’t dialed yet, he thought for a moment and put his phone away.
Bai Yan walked through the living room, stepping past the objects scattered on the floor, and headed toward the bedroom.
Then, he stopped at the door.
His gaze fell on the bed. A small black object was curled up amidst the messy blankets. Inside the room, unsurprisingly, it was also a shambles.
“A cat? Where did a cat come from?”
Guan Zhou also saw the black cat on the bed, looking confused. After all, he didn’t own a cat, and the front door had been securely locked. Could a thief have brought it in?
As he spoke, the ears on the black cat—which looked only about four or five months old—flicked. It opened its eyes, revealing a pair of golden-yellow vertical pupils.
In the next instant, the black cat suddenly lunged from the bed, its target being Bai Yan standing at the door!
However, Bai Yan didn’t move an inch; he didn’t even blink his calm eyes. Just as the black cat was about to collide with him, an arm suddenly shot across the air and pinched the scruff of the cat’s neck!
“Meow-uuu!”
A shrill cat cry instantly rang out in the room.
Guan Zhou immediately held the black cat far away, his face full of disgust: “I don’t know where this stray cat came from. It must be covered in fleas. Bai Yan, get away quickly.”
Bai Yan stared at the black cat for a moment, nodded, and then backed out of the bedroom.
The black cat seemed to scream even more pitifully.
…
Half an hour later.
Guan Zhou had finished tidying up the house and discovered that nothing was missing. He couldn’t help but wonder: Are thieves nowadays that demanding? If it’s not gold or jewelry, they don’t want it?
Although he didn’t have much value, the few hundred yuan in the cabinet was still there, and the appliances weren’t touched either.
Guan Zhou didn’t suspect the black cat of unknown origin at all until Bai Yan pointed it out, leaving him wide-eyed with shock.
“You’re saying… everything in the room was the work of this cat?”
“To be precise, it is a cat demon.”
“?!”
Today, Guan Zhou was shocked once again.
