- Chapter 38 - I Alone Taste the World’s Bitterness and Solitude, Yet Never Met You Again
“Chenyan, I knew you still cared about me.” A satisfied smile slowly spread across the woman’s pale face.
“I will repay you,” the man said, looking down at her, the gloom in his eyes fading slightly.
Tan Yueli gazed at the man, her voice soft and unhurried.
“Chenyan, as long as you don’t hate me, I’m already happy.”
“All these years, I’ve regretted abandoning you back then. I’ve been thinking of you constantly.”
Though her face was deathly pale, her eyes and brows were filled with joy, as if just seeing him was enough to satisfy her.
Her hand slowly reached for the man’s face, but Fu Chenyan took a step back, avoiding her touch, and left her with the words, “Focus on recovering.”
Then, danger struck without warning.
The helicopter began to shake violently mid-air.
“Mr. Fu, an unidentified object has struck our helicopter. We’ve lost control and must make an emergency landing. Please prepare.”
“The aircraft is in an emergency situation. Evacuate immediately upon landing,” the intercom announced.
Fu Chenyan frowned deeply, never expecting Wen Ciyi, that madman, to directly attack the helicopter.
“Landing in one minute. Brace for impact.”
“Landing in one minute. Brace for impact.”
The intercom repeated the warning.
“Chenyan, be careful. Don’t worry about me,” Tan Yueli said, slowly standing up, unsteady on her feet and swaying.
Thick smoke began to spread as the helicopter spun uncontrollably in the air.
Without a moment to hesitate, Fu Chenyan spotted a nylon rope, quickly tied it around Tan Yueli, held her tightly, and leaped from the helicopter.
An explosion erupted, sparks and smoke scattering everywhere.
“Bang!” A gunshot rang out again.
“Boss Fu, it’s an ambush!” someone shouted.
“Cough… Chenyan, don’t worry about me. Run! Wen Ciyi is insane,” Tan Yueli choked out, the smoke making it difficult to speak.
Fu Chenyan released her, drew the gun from his waist, his expression dark and his voice cold and resolute. “Everyone, stay alert.”
The enemy was hidden, while they were exposed.
Outnumbered, they were gradually losing the upper hand.
“Chenyan, watch out behind you!” Tan Yueli’s voice called from behind.
Fu Chenyan turned and deftly dodged the bullets fired at him from behind, returning fire shot for shot.
Wen Ciyi smirked at Tan Yueli, mouthing the words, “Well done.”
“Bang!”
A gunshot echoed, followed by a woman’s cry of “No!”
Fu Chenyan clutched his chest, blood streaming down, but he forced himself to keep shooting.
The blood spread across the ground like blooming poppies.
Soon, two helicopters descended, and a large team arrived. The leader, Xiao Jue, spoke up, “Boss Fu, apologies for the delayed backup.”
In the blink of an eye, gunfire, explosions, and sparks filled the air.
Wen Ciyi’s face darkened, and he shouted, “Retreat!”
He hadn’t expected Fu Chenyan to have called for reinforcements in advance.
It seemed he had underestimated him once again.
The helicopter circled slowly in the air before heading toward the Sino-Foreign United Hospital.
Everything returned to calm. Night fell like a curtain, and under the moonlight, the secluded mountain forest grew even darker and more eerie.
The man, having lost too much blood, lay still. His sharply defined face and thin, tightly pressed lips exuded an aura of indomitable pride, even in his unconscious state.
“Miss Li, so Miss Tan volunteered to stay behind and care for Boss Fu.”
“The doctor said Mr. Fu’s injuries aren’t serious, they didn’t hit any vital areas. Mr. Fu has extraordinary endurance, so he should wake up soon. Miss Li, you don’t need to worry too much.”
Li Muli pursed her lips slightly, her eyes growing increasingly somber. “Lin Yuan, take good care of him. I’ll be there later.”
If someone familiar with her were to see Li Muli at this moment, they would undoubtedly notice the striking resemblance she bore to Fu Chengyan. His shadow seemed to cling to her every move.
“Of course, Miss Li. Please be safe on your way. I’ll send someone to pick you up when you arrive.”
“Alright.”
In his unconscious state, Fu Chengyan felt trapped in an endless loop, a setting he had never experienced yet felt hauntingly familiar.
“Fu Chengyan, I’m back,” a girl’s voice whispered softly by his ear, gentle and tender.
He desperately tried to grasp it, but there was nothing.
“Ah Yan, you’re all I have left,” the girl’s voice sounded pitiful and delicate, tinged with sorrow.
He wanted to hold her, to comfort her, to say, “Don’t cry, be good, I’m here.”
But the moment he reached out, she vanished, along with the lingering scent in the air, leaving only him behind.
“Ah Yan, I like you so much.”
He wanted to say, “I like you too.”
“Ah Yan.”
“Ah Yan.”
The girl seemed endlessly delighted to cling to him, but whenever she sensed his impatience, she would obediently sit by his side.
Her soft, coquettish voice sometimes playful, sometimes sorrowful tugged at his heart, sending waves of pain through him.
The scenes repeated over and over, yet each time he reached out to touch her, she disappeared.
Gradually, he grew wiser. He sat quietly, listening to the girl’s gentle words, her occasional playful whining and pitiful complaints.
But suddenly, the scene shifted. The girl’s voice faded, leaving him alone in solitude.
He wandered through the world alone, aware that he was searching for her, yet uncertain of who she was.
It felt as though the vast world held only him.
Cycle after cycle, but he never saw her again.
He didn’t know how many years had passed like this it seemed that searching for her was his sole purpose for living. Occasionally, his heart ached fiercely from missing her.
Slowly, he began to forget the words she had spoken, remembering only the sound of her calling, “Ah Yan.”
Ah Yan, Ah Yan, Ah Yan.
But no one called him Ah Yan anymore.
I have endured the bitterness and solitude of time alone, yet I never reunited with you.
“Ah Yan, wake up,” the girl’s voice sounded by his ear once more.
“Ah Yan, hurry and wake up. I miss you.”
Hearing the familiar voice, Fu Chengyan resisted the urge to reach out, afraid that if he did, she would vanish again, just as she had so long ago, disappearing without a trace.
“Ah Yan, I’m so sleepy. Hurry and get up to coax me to sleep. I want a hug.”
The girl’s tone was lazy and soft, coaxing the unconscious man.
Fu Chengyan struggled to open his eyes. This time, he had to see her face clearly. Even if she vanished again, he would find her.
“Ah Yan, you’re awake,” the girl said, her eyes crinkling with joy as she stepped forward to take his hand.
Fu Chengyan froze. Could he really touch her this time?
Cautiously, he wrapped his large hand around her small one, gently kneading it, afraid to startle her.
Li Muli let out a soft laugh, her beautiful eyes curving into half-moons as she leaned down to hug him, careful to avoid his injuries.
“Sweetheart, how did you manage to get hurt when I was away for just a little while?”
Fu Chenyan realized that the person this time was alive. He reached out and gently stroked the girl’s cheek, his touch impossibly soft.
She had even called him “baby.”
So she couldn’t have disappeared on purpose.
Fu Chenyan abruptly sat up and pulled her tightly into his embrace, burying his face in the crook of her neck. A tear slid down as he whispered, “Can you please… never disappear again?”
