- Chapter 37 - It Seems His Name Was Her Motivation to Persevere
“Ciyi, why didn’t you tell me Chenyan was coming?” Tan Yueli smiled as she sat down beside Wen Ciyi.
Wen Ciyi lifted her chin with a frivolous hook of his finger and teased, “My mistake. I should’ve let you know an old flame was here.”
Tan Yueli swatted his hand away, feigning both coquettishness and annoyance. “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Wen Ciyi chuckled, unbothered. “Should I leave you two to talk, then?”
“Ciyi, you know I only like you now.” Tan Yueli pouted and clung to his arm, acting spoiled.
Wen Ciyi: Well done with the acting cute, but please don’t do it again.
Still, he smiled and pinched her pouting lips, coaxing, “It’s my fault.”
Fu Chenyan continued sipping his tea, entirely uninterested in their flirtatious banter.
After a moment, his thin lips parted. “Should I come back after you’re done flirting?”
Tan Yueli’s face flushed and paled in quick succession, but she soon giggled and stuck out her tongue playfully. “Chenyan, sorry about that, I couldn’t help myself.”
“Then I won’t disturb you.” Fu Chenyan adjusted his collar and stood to leave.
Wen Ciyi hurried over with a laugh. “Don’t go, President Fu. Since you’re already here, let’s have a meal together. We’re all old acquaintances.”
“Yeah, Chenyan, it’s been so long,” Tan Yueli chimed in.
Fu Chenyan nodded. It wasn’t wise to act too boldly on someone else’s turf.
“Then let’s meet at Blue Enchantress in half an hour.”
Blue Enchantress was the largest and most bustling bar in Country G, with an even more extravagant interior and everything one could desire.
Fu Chenyan nodded again. The man, dressed in a sharp suit, strode out the door with his long, powerful legs.
Tan Yueli’s lips curved into a smile. Such enviable legs capable of making anyone fall for them.
Enough to make one bow down in submission.
“Stop staring. No matter how much you look, they’re not yours,” Wen Ciyi mocked when he noticed Tan Yueli’s gaze.
Tan Yueli scoffed lightly. “That’s exactly why I’m working to make him mine.”
“Alright then, cheers to our pleasant cooperation.”
“Pleasant cooperation.”
Wen Ciyi had his eyes on Fu Chenyan’s business, while Tan Yueli had her eyes on the man himself.
Tan Yueli changed into a red halter dress, applied delicate makeup, and drove to Blue Enchantress.
When Fu Chenyan saw her, his brow furrowed tightly. “This style doesn’t suit you.”
It somewhat gave the feeling of Dong Shi imitating Xi Shi’s frown a clumsy imitation.
The smile on Tan Yueli’s lips stiffened slightly. She had deliberately imitated Li Muli today, from her makeup to her clothing.
But that woman possessed a natural, innate charm and allure, every smile and glance seemed to seduce.
“Chenyan, I thought you’d like this look.” Tan Yueli moved closer and sat beside Fu Chenyan.
Fu Chenyan subtly shifted away. “Miss Tan, have some self-respect.”
“But we used to sit together like this when we were young.”
Tan Yueli intentionally brought up their shared past to evoke the man’s empathy.
Little did she know, he detested that period of his life the most. The feeling of having trusted someone only to be betrayed he never wanted to experience it again.
“If Wen Ciyi isn’t coming, I don’t think there’s any need to talk.” The man’s expression darkened frighteningly as he stood and moved to sit across from her.
Tan Yueli felt a pang of panic and immediately straightened up. “Chenyan, Ciyi said he’s entrusted everything to me.”
“Fine. What did you mean by hijacking my goods?”
“And what did you mean by injuring my people?”
Tan Yueli flashed a standard professional smile. “President Fu, when did you start directly questioning things that have no basis in fact?”
She had discussed it with Wen Ciyi beforehand, Fu Chenyan had no evidence, otherwise he wouldn’t be speaking so cordially right now.
Fu Chenyan scoffed. “Is that really the case?”
“Of course it is.”
“It seems your sincerity is lacking, so there’s no need to continue this discussion.” Fu Chenyan’s face turned cold as he prepared to turn and leave.
“Chenyan, the transaction will take place on the mountain at 8:30 tonight,” a woman’s voice called from behind.
“Why should I believe you?” Fu Chenyan curled his lips into a cold smile.
“Because all these years, I’ve always loved you.”
“Hah.”
The man let out an indifferent, mocking laugh, his entire demeanor radiating a chilling aura that gave off the imposing presence of a king who commands the world.
Tan Yueli watched his retreating figure, the obsession in her eyes growing more apparent.
Fu Chenyan she was determined to have him.
“He’s gone. Did you reach an agreement?” Wen Ciyi exhaled a light puff of smoke, asking nonchalantly.
“He’ll probably come tonight.”
“So why ‘probably’?” The threatening tone was unmistakable. “You know I don’t like ‘probably.'”
“He’s grown more cautious over the years. I can’t guarantee he’ll trust me completely.”
Wen Ciyi smiled faintly. “Hanging up.”
He wanted to see what Fu Chenyan would do.
“President Fu, are we going tonight? That woman might be setting us up. We could walk into a trap,” Lin Yuan inquired respectfully.
Fu Chenyan pondered for a moment. “We’re going. Bring ten men from the Black Hawk unit.”
The Black Hawk unit was an elite force personally trained by Fu Chenyan.
They were almost like emotionless robots, driven solely by their mission.
They were shadows in the darkness assassins, bodyguards, and desperadoes who operated from the shadows.
“Dispatch a helicopter to wait on the abandoned highway.”
“Understood, President Fu.”
Darkness enveloped the scene, a cold wind whistled by, and an eerie chill swept over them.
Wen Ciyi smirked at the sight of the man. “That woman Tan Yueli really holds deep feelings for you, doesn’t she?”
“Shall I take action, or will you get straight to the point, President Wen?” The tone brooked no defiance.
“Ah, President Fu, no need to be angry. I was just joking around. Of course, I have to show you respect.” Wen Ciyi grinned and waved to the people around him.
“But then again,”
A loud bang echoed, followed by a woman’s sharp scream.
“I don’t take kindly to betrayal,” Wen Ciyi said with a laugh, firing another shot into the bound woman’s thigh.
Blood splattered across the ground, and the woman’s face turned deathly pale as she bit down hard on her lower lip.
“Considering our past relationship, I’ll let you keep your miserable life.”
Fu Chenyan’s expression grew increasingly grim as he stared coldly at the smirking man across from him.
“Threatening me?”
“President Fu, you flatter me. How could I dare threaten you over a worthless woman?”
The darkness in Fu Chenyan’s eyes deepened as he waited for the man’s terms.
“If President Fu has a soft spot for her, you’re welcome to take her with you,” Wen Ciyi continued, smiling as he wiped his gun.
“Ugh.” The woman groaned in agony, her blood pooling around her.
Fu Chenyan let out a light laugh. “Thank you for your generosity, President Wen.”
“Lin Yuan, take her.”
Lin Yuan approached Tan Yueli, but the woman struggled desperately, repeatedly murmuring, “Chenyan, Chenyan, save me.”
Lin Yuan glanced uncertainly at Fu Chenyan, who scoffed coldly. “If she doesn’t want to leave, let her stay here.”
The woman fell silent as Lin Yuan lifted her into his arms. The helicopter quickly ascended, circling in the sky.
After a series of emergency hemostatic procedures in the helicopter, the woman lay flat on the back seat, fine beads of sweat continuously rolling down her forehead. She kept murmuring “Chen Yan” under her breath.
It seemed these two words were the driving force keeping her going.
Fu Chenyan stared at her with a complicated expression, several times opening his mouth as if to speak but stopping himself.
