- You Smell So Good! After Reuniting, My Ex-Boyfriend Forcefully Took Me Back
- Chapter 8 - Grandma Wang Sufang
Only after finishing two bowls of red bean porridge did Grandma Zhang finally let Fang Zhiyou go.
He carried the trash bag out, rubbing his stomach and burping uncontrollably.
“Little Fang, heading to the shop now?”
An elderly man passed by and greeted him. “That’s right. Are you back from your workout, Uncle?”
“Haha, yes. I’m getting old and can’t sleep much, so I figure I’ll take a walk once I’m awake.”
Fang Zhiyou greeted several other elderly neighbors along the way.
The residential complex where he lived was quite old, and most of the residents were seniors. When he first bought the apartment here, he did so for two reasons: first, the convenient location near the hospital, and second, the warm, lively atmosphere of the neighborhood.
Although Fang Leyun had developmental delays due to congenital issues, he had a very cheerful personality. He was confident and composed wherever he went, acting like a little adult. A silver-tongued little social butterfly, he was incredibly popular.
Even a quiet, introverted, and somewhat slow-to-react father like Fang Zhiyou benefited from his son’s charm. The elderly men and women in the neighborhood were all very fond of him.
After throwing out the trash, Fang Zhiyou hopped on his favorite electric scooter and sped off toward his little shop, “Spring Flowers.”
Once he arrived, he opened for business, tidying up the shop and finishing the cleaning. Only then could he finally sit down and take a breather.
Whenever Fang Leyun was free, he would use his children’s smartwatch to send voice messages to his dad. One after another, they were filled with ramblings about everything under the sun.
How Ultraman was finally finished charging.
How Grandma gave him a banana to eat.
How the crocheted bear had fallen on the floor.
Fang Leyun shared every little detail. And Fang Zhiyou listened to every single voice message from beginning to end.
The crocheted bear was the second “little guest” to join their household, following the crocheted puppy. With the arrival of the bear, Fang Leyun had almost forgotten about the puppy. If Fang Zhiyou hadn’t spotted the crocheted puppy tucked into a crack in the sofa while cleaning that morning, he would have forgotten he had ever bought it for the boy.
Buzz, buzz, buzz.
His phone began to ring. Fang Zhiyou set aside his work and answered.
“You-zai,” a voice called out affectionately.
Fang Zhiyou smiled immediately. “Grandma, why are you calling? Are you feeling unwell?”
“Oh, no, it’s not that. Why did you send me money again? I went to the square for my morning exercises and ran into Little Liu from the post office. He told me you sent money and wanted me to go process it.”
Fang Zhiyou then remembered that he had set up a recurring transfer to his grandmother’s account for the beginning of every month.
“Just take it, Grandma.”
“You silly child, I haven’t even touched the money you sent last month. I live in the countryside alone, I don’t need that much. Most of what I eat comes from my own garden. It’s you I’m worried about, alone in the capital with Lele, having to pay for the child’s medical treatments. You have so many expenses. Hurry now, tell me how to send it back. That Little Liu is a stubborn one, too. I talked to him for ages, but that big lug insisted it couldn’t be returned. How could it not be returnable?”
Fang Zhiyou spoke soothingly into the phone. “Grandma, I have enough money. Don’t worry. You’re getting older, so if there’s something you want to eat or use, don’t be stingy with yourself. Since I’m not there with you, sending a little money is all I can do. Unless, of course, you want to come to the capital and live with us? Then I’ll stop sending it.”
“No, no, I’m just a bag of old bones now. Besides, I’m used to living at home. I wouldn’t be comfortable elsewhere.”
Fang Zhiyou immediately seized the opportunity. “Then you can’t stop me from doing my part. Besides, I’m not short on cash. If you don’t let me send you money, I won’t feel at peace.”
This time, it was Wang Sufang’s turn to fall silent on the other end of the line. After a long while, she sighed.
“Alright, then. I can’t use that much anyway, so I’ll save it all for you. If you ever need it or find yourself short on funds, remember to tell Grandma, okay?”
“Mhm.”
“Oh, right, You-zai. Liwen and Shuxia are back. When are you coming home so we can have a family meal together?”
Fang Zhiyou paused for a moment. “Grandma, I’m busy here. I can’t spare the time right now.”
Wang Sufang sighed. “I don’t want to force you, and I know you’ve suffered. But You-zai, they are your parents after all. Blood is thicker than water, and besides, there was no other choice regarding what happened in the past. Can parents and children really hold a grudge against each other for a lifetime?”
Fang Zhiyou remained silent, fiddling with a flower in front of him.
Wang Sufang realized her words might have been a bit insensitive and finally added, “Grandma was wrong to say that. If you don’t want to come back, then don’t. Just remember to eat well with Guoguo. If you ever miss Grandma, just give me a call. If you do decide to come back, I’ll prepare all your favorite foods in advance.”
“Mhm.” Fang Zhiyou nodded. “Grandma, I’m going to hang up now.”
