- Chapter 34 - "Is Being Stupid Contagious?"
Jian Chun hadn’t realized that her polite lack of filter would bother Yu Siyi so much. She had only called her “Sister”… it wasn’t like she had called her “Old Lady.”
Yet, the air suddenly grew still, as if the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. In the suffocating silence, Jian Chun tentatively asked, “Well… I can’t exactly call you ‘Little Sister,’ can I?”
This time, it was Yu Siyi’s turn to be silent. The girl’s profile was flawless, but her lips were pressed into a tight, downward line. Even a blind person could tell Yu Siyi was displeased. Beside her, Zhu Feifei let out a series of muffled snickers that sounded like a ghost sobbing.
Yu Siyi cast a sharp glance toward Zhu Feifei, who immediately shut up. Then, Yu Siyi returned her gaze to the exercise book. The school-printed paper had a heavy ink scent. Beside the neatly printed questions, Jian Chun’s answers were written in a dark blue ink. Her handwriting was beautiful—deliberate and neat, as if she had painstakingly practiced every stroke.
A flash of surprise crossed Yu Siyi’s calm eyes, followed by a fleeting trace of a smile, but she composed herself instantly, acting as if nothing had happened.
Jian Chun, holding her nose because of her cold, waited for the lecture. In the face of a difficult exam paper, Yu Siyi’s beauty lost its distraction; Jian Chun was dead serious about learning. She had decided that if Yu Siyi refused, she would just pester her until she gave in—after all, a person like Yu Siyi was likely most vulnerable to someone completely shameless.
Yu Siyi began to speak. Her voice was quiet, just loud enough for Jian Chun to hear. It lacked any emotional rise or fall, yet it carried a strange, magnetic pull.
One taught, the other listened. They exchanged a few questions, and Yu Siyi provided precise solutions. The progress was swift. Neither noticed that the rest of the classroom had gone quiet, with everyone casting surreptitious glances their way.
The girl with the high ponytail leaned in, her eyes full of focus as she watched the person beside her. Yu Siyi tilted her head slightly; under the fluorescent lights, her skin looked as white as moonlight. With her long lashes fluttering as she looked up, the scene was as beautiful as a painting.
Could they… actually look good together?
No! No one would admit that! The students who admired Yu Siyi held a deep-seated bias against Jian Chun, especially seeing her “shamelessly” pestering the top student. They all wanted to do the same, but did they have the guts? No.
But Jian Chun did. Not only did she have the guts, but she also successfully got Yu Siyi to give her private tutoring.
The “Ugly” Truth
Zhu Feifei was fuming as people pestered her for gossip on the class group chat.
Zhu Feifei: “What’s the relationship? There is NO relationship! How many times do I have to say it?” Zhu Feifei: “Jian Chun is just asking a question. Siyi is just being merciful.” Zhu Feifei: “How should I know why she isn’t merciful to you? Maybe because you’re ugly.”
After that string of messages, the chat went dead. It seemed the “ugly” comment hit home. The class concluded that Jian Chun was using her face to get ahead. That was a league they couldn’t compete in.
The Best Friend Battle
When the bell rang for the break, Jian Chun went to the restroom. When she returned, she found Jing Ge sitting in her seat. Seeing Jian Chun, Jing Ge reflexively stood up. Li Ying arrived a moment later, her face full of mockery for Jing Ge.
“Sister Chun, you’ve been coming to school every day?” Jing Ge asked, grabbing Jian Chun’s hand. “I would have come too if I knew. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I told you at the start,” Jian Chun said with a small smile.
Li Ying chimed in, “Weren’t you the one who said you were going to the anime convention? You wouldn’t have had time for school anyway.”
Jing Ge dropped the act and rolled her eyes at Li Ying. “Nobody would think you were a mute if you just kept your mouth shut.”
The two started bickering, but Jian Chun didn’t take sides. Jing Ge then turned to Jian Chun with a wounded expression. “Sister Chun, do you want to be friends with Yu Siyi so much that you don’t want to play with me anymore?”
Jian Chun looked over at Yu Siyi, who was standing nearby talking to Zhu Feifei. Even in loose school clothes, her silhouette was striking. Sensing something, Yu Siyi glanced over. Jian Chun quickly looked back at Jing Ge.
“Then how do you want me to ‘play’ with you?” Jian Chun asked, smiling.
Jing Ge was stunned. She had expected a guilty apology. She usually used guilt to get Jian Chun to buy her things or agree to her demands. But Jian Chun wasn’t playing along.
“If there’s nothing else, go back to your seat. Class is starting,” Jian Chun said. “And I’ll say it again: don’t get in the way of my studies.”
The Love Square
At lunch, Jian Chun waited for Yu Siyi and Zhu Feifei. “Where are we eating? Can I join?” she asked.
“Some people really are thick-skinned,” Zhu Feifei grumbled.
“Thank you,” Jian Chun said, patting her cheek. “It feels quite nice. Want to try?”
At the school side gate, they ran into Ling Zheng. She was crouching by the ditch, looking for the kittens. When she saw them, she asked, “The cats are gone. Did you take them?”
Yu Siyi gave a curt “yes.”
Ling Zheng winked at Yu Siyi. “I thought they’d been washed away. Thanks, sister.”
Yu Siyi didn’t respond. Ling Zheng then slung an arm around Jian Chun. “Let’s go eat together.”
Jian Chun felt a headache coming on. Jing Ge was trailing behind, acting moody and waiting for an apology, while Ling Zheng was acting like her long-lost best friend.
“Let go,” Jian Chun groaned. “Aren’t you hot? Because I am.”
“Are you shy? Your face is red,” Ling Zheng teased.
“It’s my natural complexion, Ling Zheng!”
Just then, Feng Xue appeared. Seeing Ling Zheng, she started crying immediately, as if Ling Zheng had personally betrayed her. Ling Zheng, who usually didn’t care about anything, looked genuinely terrified of the girl’s weird behavior.
“Run! Go now!” Jian Chun urged Ling Zheng. She knew this version of the protagonist was “broken” and used pity as a weapon.
Ling Zheng bolted, and predictably, Feng Xue chased after her. Jian Chun burst out laughing. “Don’t you think they’re a perfect match?” she asked Li Ying.
“I didn’t before,” Li Ying noted, “but now I do. Ling Zheng’s brain isn’t exactly normal either.
The “Contagious” Remark
They ended up at Boss Lin’s shop, where Yu Siyi and Zhu Feifei were already eating. Jian Chun leaned over their table. “Why did you guys leave so fast? I thought we were eating together.”
“Found a new person to chase already?” Zhu Feifei sneered. “Trying to see which one you can catch first?”
“Sister Feifei, Ling Zheng was chasing me. I didn’t agree,” Jian Chun teased.
“Don’t call me ‘Sister Feifei’!”
“Okay, Feifei.”
Jian Chun then turned her “nasal congestion” voice toward Yu Siyi. “Sister, are you upset because Ling Zheng called you ‘sister’ too?”
Yu Siyi sat perfectly straight and looked at her. “Sit up straight. And stay back.”
“I’m not sneezing today,” Jian Chun assured her. “If you’re worried, I’ll buy a mask. I won’t infect you.”
Yu Siyi hesitated for a second before looking at her coldly.
“I’m not worried about the cold,” Yu Siyi said. “I’m worried that being stupid is contagious.”
Zhu Feifei roared with laughter, pointing at the stunned Jian Chun. “Hahaha! Get lost!”
Jian Chun felt her soul leave her body.
