- Chapter 33 - "Who Is Your Sister?"
Jian Chun didn’t even realize why she had felt the need to explain herself. Ling Zheng, who had been clinging to her just a moment ago, caught sight of the kittens and immediately abandoned her to go play with them. The kittens, as if encountering a great demon, let out weak, tiny meows.
Jian Chun cast an envious glance at the cat-petting Ling Zheng before turning back to Yu Siyi. Yu Siyi had her eyes lowered, fastidiously wiping her fingers. Sensing a gaze, she looked up abruptly, her eyes locking directly with Jian Chun’s.
Caught red-handed, Jian Chun reflexively looked away. After a second of panic, her eyes drifted back to Yu Siyi. Yu Siyi studied her with a strange, expressionless look, her brow slightly raised, making no effort to hide her aloofness.
“How long have you been here?” Jian Chun asked. “Want to go out and grab lunch together?”
“No,” Yu Siyi said, turning away. “I’m going back to the classroom.”
Jian Chun watched her retreating back, baffled. Li Ying hooked her arm into Jian Chun’s, also leaning over to watch. “I feel like Yu Siyi is… really angry,” she whispered.
“Angry? No way.” Jian Chun watched her for a while. Yu Siyi’s attitude had always been like this; Jian Chun actually felt that Yu Siyi being willing to talk to her at all was a sign of her being quite approachable.
The Future Superstar and the “Flower Dew” Idol
At a small local shop, Jian Chun and Li Ying shared a meal. The owner, Boss Lin, remembered Jian Chun and asked why “Little Sister Yu” wasn’t with her.
“She’s busy studying in the classroom,” Jian Chun lied.
“She can’t just not eat,” Boss Lin said, handing Jian Chun a lunch box. “Take this to her. It’s on the house.”
During the meal, Li Ying started gushing about her idol again. “My idol is a deity! He sits high above the masses. He’s a celestial being who should only eat flower petals and drink morning dew! Pooping and peeing would be a desecration of his existence!”
Jian Chun couldn’t decide if this idol was lucky or cursed.
“Wait, what was his name again?”
“Rong Zhen! I’ve told you so many times!” Li Ying flashed her phone screen. On the wallpaper was a clean-cut, handsome boy with a youthful smile and a distinct canine tooth.
Jian Chun froze. This was the man who, in the future, would be the legendary triple-threat superstar linked in scandals with Yu Siyi. Right now, he was just a rookie who had been out for a few years. It gave Jian Chun a surreal sense of “pre-knowing” the future.
The Rescue in the Rain
Back at school, the afternoon brought a sudden downpour. Worried about the kittens in the drainage ditch, Jian Chun grabbed her umbrella and bolted for the stairs.
The rain was heavy, blurring the world into a gray mist. Just as Jian Chun was about to charge into the rain, a hand yanked her wrist. She stumbled back, losing her balance and crashing right into the person who had pulled her.
It was Yu Siyi.
Jian Chun’s hand landed somewhere soft. Li Ying’s voice echoed in her head: Drinking soy milk helps development!
Once Jian Chun steadied herself, Yu Siyi let go, her beautiful brow furrowed as she glanced at her white shoes. Jian Chun had accidentally left a muddy footprint on the pristine leather.
“Should I… wash them for you?” Jian Chun offered awkwardly.
Yu Siyi gave her a look of utter disdain. “In your dreams.”
She took Jian Chun’s umbrella and said, “Let’s go.”
They shared the small umbrella, the space between them tight and suffocatingly quiet. They reached the ditch just as the cardboard box was soaking through. Yu Siyi didn’t hesitate; she jumped into the muddy ditch, ruining her shoes to scoop up the kittens.
Jian Chun, terrified the kittens would freeze, stuffed them into the front of her school uniform jacket. The kittens squirmed against her chest, making her nose itch—whether from the cats or the chill, she didn’t know.
“Take them, I’m about to—” Before she could finish, she shoved the cats into Yu Siyi’s arms and let out a massive sneeze.
Yu Siyi, holding the cats in one arm and the umbrella in the other, looked at Jian Chun’s dripping hair and red nose. “Are you stupid?”
Jian Chun sneezed again. “Stay away from me for a second.”
Yu Siyi didn’t move. She watched Jian Chun with a complicated expression. “Buy a bigger umbrella next time.”
“Next time?” Jian Chun blinked. “I thought we weren’t close?”
Yu Siyi ignored the question, called a taxi, and took the kittens home with her.
“Thin Resistance”
The next day, Jian Chun woke up with a stuffed-up nose. She had officially caught a cold.
When she arrived at school, the classroom was buzzing with rumors about her and Yu Siyi leaving together the day before. Jian Chun ignored them, took some medicine, and walked over to Yu Siyi’s desk.
Yu Siyi was wearing a pink lace bubble-sleeve shirt today, looking as elegant as ever. Her friend Zhu Feifei was nearby, looking like she wanted to pick a fight.
Jian Chun tapped on Yu Siyi’s desk. “Can I have your contact info? I just want to check on the kittens. Nothing else.”
Yu Siyi tilted her head. “Then take the kittens back and look at them yourself.” She paused, then added with a smirk, “Didn’t you mention ‘desensitization therapy’? I think you should try it.”
Jian Chun, her nose red and her voice nasally, dragged a chair over. “You’re so thick-skinned,” Yu Siyi muttered.
Jian Chun froze, then glared at her. “Even when you curse at people, you sound so gentle.”
Yu Siyi went cold. “Do you really think ‘long-term interaction breeds affection’ is going to work on me?”
Jian Chun realized she had dug this hole herself by teasing Feng Xue earlier. She sighed. “Alright, Sister, I know you won’t like me. Don’t worry.”
Yu Siyi’s pale eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion. She stared at Jian Chun and said, one word at a time:
“Who exactly is your sister?
