- Chapter 10 - The Temperature of an Embrace
Gu Yinghuai patted her cheeks as she emerged from the bathroom, her previously crimson face returning to its original fair complexion.
She walked into the living room, where a corner of the floor-to-ceiling curtains had been drawn back. Shen Huaixu stood by the window, gazing at the heavy rain outside. The rain lashed against the glass, leaving behind streaks of water and dense clusters of droplets.
The weather was terrible, but what was worse was that Shen Huaixu’s car was still at the company. This meant that in this torrential downpour, they would have to compete with everyone nearby for a limited number of taxis.
“Maybe we could take my ‘Wuling Nano’?” Gu Yinghuai had bought the tiny electric car for emergencies, but since purchasing it, the number of times she had actually driven it to work could be counted on one hand. Now, it sat in the underground parking lot gathering dust.
Shen Huaixu didn’t particularly like riding in the Nano. She claimed her 1.2-meter-long legs couldn’t possibly fit inside and was vehemently against using it whenever they went out.
Gu Yinghuai glanced at those legs, which Shen Huaixu had intentionally stretched out straight on the sofa. The slender legs were cleanly shaven, the fair and firm skin showing not a single blemish. Every muscle was perfectly placed, without a trace of excess fat.
So beautiful. Gu Yinghuai sat on the edge of the sofa and stroked Shen Huaixu’s well-defined, smooth calves. She grasped the prominent ankle and gently rubbed Shen Huaixu’s rounded toes, as if soothing a temperamental, beautiful Ragdoll cat.
“Let’s go. I think its charge should be enough to get you to the office,” Gu Yinghuai patted Shen Huaixu’s leg. Her childish girlfriend pulled her into an embrace, burying her fluffy head in the crook of Gu Yinghuai’s neck, unwilling to face reality.
“Even so, we’re really going to be late,” Gu Yinghuai reminded her again.
Shen Huaixu buried her head even deeper, the bridge of her high nose brushing against Gu Yinghuai’s neck. Her warm breath tickled Gu Yinghuai’s heart rhythmically.
In the next second, those same warm lips pressed against Gu Yinghuai’s neck. Just as Shen Huaixu was about to lick the enticing skin before her, Gu Yinghuai pressed a hand against Shen Huaixu’s head.
“Get up, you idiot,” Gu Yinghuai said crossly. She shouldn’t have sat down and wasted these few minutes; if they hadn’t, they’d probably have their shoes on and be out the door by now.
Shen Huaixu keenly sensed the faint hint of irritation in Gu Yinghuai’s voice and immediately nuzzled her cheek coaxingly. “Thank you for driving me to work, my dear Huai.”
“Hmph, tremble before me! The Great Huai shall grant you the chance to experience my unparalleled driving skills!” Gu Yinghuai tilted her chin up, full of pride as she stood up from the sofa. She reached out to pull up Shen Huaixu, who claimed she was getting up but whose body remained stubbornly glued to the sofa. “Let’s go, you’re so annoying.”
Shen Huaixu stood up, following Gu Yinghuai’s pull. She leaned down and whispered a threat into Gu Yinghuai’s ear: “You called me annoying? Just wait until I get home tonight and see how I deal with you.” As she spoke, she gave Gu Yinghuai’s waist a suggestive squeeze, causing her to shudder.
The bold, flirtatious words turned Gu Yinghuai’s fair face a deep shade of red. She glared at Shen Huaixu and walked toward the entryway, deciding to ignore this idiot whose head was filled with nothing but “yellow” thoughts.
Shen Huaixu followed behind her, beaming. Teasing her Huai was simply too much fun.
However, she secretly hoped that the car was out of juice…
“Ah, there’s not enough power.” After starting the car, Gu Yinghuai looked at the critically low battery on the screen, feeling a bit lost. “What should we do? Can we still get a taxi now?”
The rain outside seemed to be getting heavier. With only twenty minutes left until work, a downpour like this meant the roads would undoubtedly be congested.
“Let’s try the apps first. If that fails, we’ll take the subway,” Shen Huaixu felt a secret sense of satisfaction. Finally, there was a legitimate reason not to ride in that car.
“I guess that’s our only choice.” Gu Yinghuai took a spare umbrella from the trunk and held Shen Huaixu’s hand as they walked out of the parking lot, the latter looking down at her phone to hail a ride.
Luck wasn’t on their side today. Shen Huaixu tried several ride-hailing apps, but she couldn’t get a spot in the queue. Finally, having no other choice, Shen Huaixu put on a face mask, held the umbrella, and walked with Gu Yinghuai through the torrential rain into the subway station.
The station was packed with commuters rushing to work. Rows of numb, weary faces shifted back and forth. Everyone was more or less soaked by the rain, with patches of moisture spreading across their dry clothes.
“When was the last time we took the subway together?” Shen Huaixu carefully pulled Gu Yinghuai into her arms, shielding her from colliding with the hurried passersby in the corridor.
“Hmm… probably back when we were looking for jobs?” Gu Yinghuai couldn’t quite remember clearly. She only recalled that the last time she took the subway with Shen Huaixu seemed to be during graduation season.
At that time, Shen Huaixu had already signed with her current company. Although she wasn’t very famous yet, Jiang Rui felt she was worth the investment and had fought hard to secure resources for her. Her income was quite respectable for someone her age.
Meanwhile, Gu Yinghuai had just found an internship. Upon receiving the offer, she had happily called Shen Huaixu, saying she wanted to treat her to a big feast.
After the meal, they had squeezed into a crowded subway car on their way home. The air was filled with the scent of cheap perfume and cigarette smoke from unknown passengers, a pungent mix that made them both wrinkle their noses in unison.
As more passengers boarded, Shen Huaixu and Gu Yinghuai were pushed into a corner, their bodies pressed tightly together, feeling each other’s restless heartbeats.
On that midsummer night, the subway’s air conditioning couldn’t whisk away their scorching body temperatures.
Later, Shen Huaixu had used her height to her advantage, carefully sheltering Gu Yinghuai in her arms with her hands braced against the overhead poles, providing her with a safe and reliable embrace.
Today was no different.
They followed the tide of people into the carriage. During the morning rush hour, a seat was impossible to find.
Shen Huaixu frowned, enduring her discomfort as she pushed through the crowd, leading Gu Yinghuai to a spot near the door. She held Gu Yinghuai against the carriage wall, one hand gripping the pole above.
A 1.8-meter human wall blocked out the chaotic crowd, giving Gu Yinghuai a small, private space where she could breathe freely.
“Axu, are you okay?” As the crowd grew, Shen Huaixu’s expression became increasingly grim. Even through the mask, Gu Yinghuai could feel her extreme displeasure.
Despite being someone who hated physical contact with strangers, she instinctively stood in front of Gu Yinghuai, using her body to build a wall and isolate her from the crowd.
Shen Huaixu is a walking contradiction.
Gu Yinghuai had once described her this way.
She hated physical contact, yet loved being touchy-feely with Gu Yinghuai, often using what she thought were subtle movements to brush against her arm or calf, then curling her lips in secret delight.
She hated trouble, yet she was always there for Gu Yinghuai, never tiring of her requests.
A senior at school had once warned her: Shen Huaixu wasn’t as kind-hearted as she appeared. She was a woman with a streak of malice who knew how to use her beauty and fake warmth as a cover.
They also warned her that if she didn’t want to get hurt, she’d better stay away from Shen Huaixu and not be fooled by her sweet words.
In the middle of the crowd, Gu Yinghuai looked up and met Shen Huaixu’s silver-grey eyes, which were tinged with irritability.
Years had passed, and Shen Huaixu had long since shed her student-era greenness and impulsiveness. Her youthful face had been sharpened by life; she had become even more enigmatic than she was in university.
The only thing that remained unchanged was the way she looked at Gu Yinghuai.
A thick, intense love fermented in Shen Huaixu’s eyes, brewing into a dizzying wine. The alluring aroma tempted Gu Yinghuai to take a careful sip, only to end up intoxicated and drowning within it.
She had long since been captured by Shen Huaixu.
“It’s been too long since I took the subway; I forgot how crowded the morning rush is,” Shen Huaixu noticed Gu Yinghuai’s hand resting on her waist and looked down into her worried eyes.
“I’m fine, don’t worry,” she said. “If you really feel bad for me, then tonight we—” The unfinished sentence was completed by Shen Huaixu’s hand, which slid from Gu Yinghuai’s waist down to her buttocks.
Gu Yinghuai’s eyes widened like a wary squirrel as she scanned the carriage left and right, terrified that someone might have seen Shen Huaixu’s bold move.
Fortunately, the people in this carriage were almost entirely indifferent to their surroundings. Some were staring at their phones, some were resting with their eyes closed, and others were struggling to hold onto the handrails. No one noticed the two people flirting in the corner.
“Are you crazy!?” Gu Yinghuai scolded in a low voice. “We’re on the subway!”
“No one will see,” Shen Huaixu’s eyes beneath her baseball cap looked incredibly innocent. She gently patted Gu Yinghuai’s back to calm her down. “Besides, I didn’t even do anything.”
She was just placing her hand on her girlfriend’s hip to prevent her from falling—what was the problem?
It wasn’t like she was doing anything more “excessive”!
“We’re almost at the station, get ready.” Shen Huaixu watched the scenery outside slow down, reminding her partner to mind her bag so it wouldn’t get caught on someone else.
Gu Yinghuai turned her head. The rainy view outside the window vanished into a dark tunnel before finally coming to a stop.
The surrounding crowd surged toward the doors. From time to time, voices could be heard shouting, “Stop pushing!” or “I’m losing my shoe!” Someone else discovered that the fried dough sticks and buns in their bag had vanished into thin air and began cursing at the empty space, leaving the train with nothing but an empty plastic bag.
Shen Huaixu continued to shield Gu Yinghuai as they pushed through the crowd and followed the mass of people off the train.
“I am definitely charging my Nano when I get back,” Gu Yinghuai never wanted to experience the morning rush again. The commute, which was less than ten minutes, felt like a lifetime.
Even Shen Huaixu, who usually resisted the tiny car, for once agreed with Gu Yinghuai.
Just moments ago, Shen Huaixu thought she might actually lose her life in that carriage.
The pungent perfume mixed with the smell of various foods, and everyone was breathing in the air exhaled by strangers. At the thought of this, Shen Huaixu’s stomach churned, acid secreted wildly, and the urge to vomit grew stronger.
She could only focus her attention on Gu Yinghuai, sniffing her hair and letting the familiar scent drive away the disgusting thoughts in her mind.
“I’ve decided. I’m having Jiang Rui send someone to pick me up. If I have to squeeze onto the subway again, I’ll die.” Shen Huaixu sent Gu Yinghuai’s office location to Jiang Rui, demanding a car be sent there to pick her up.
Gu Yinghuai teased her: “Wow, such capitalist behavior. Truly a celebrity lady, aren’t we?”
“The celebrity is currently holding the umbrella for you,” Shen Huaixu pointed to the umbrella as they walked out of the crowded station. The torrential rain poured down instantly, clattering against the umbrella with a loud pitter-patter.
After they left, a small, thin figure quietly peeked out from the shadows. A phone in the darkness emitted a faint, ghostly white light.
The person looked down at the photos in the album and let out a creepy smile.
