Chapter 28: A New Definition of Friends: Why Do We Keep Kissing…
Near noon, Lu Feiran felt around under his pillow for his phone and saw over a dozen missed calls, all from Lu Liye.
There was also a message from Lu Liye: [Ranran, call home when you have time.]
Lu Feiran closed his eyes, shoved the phone back under the pillow, and buried himself in the fluffy quilt, intending to sleep a little longer.
However, waves of discomfort from the hangover washed over him. His head was pounding and stuffy, making it impossible to fall asleep. Lu Feiran reluctantly crawled out of the quilt, rubbed his messy hair, and prepared to get out of bed.
He needed to eat something.
Lu Feiran swayed a bit and sat down at the table.
He didn’t stop to think about why there was prepared food and warm milk on the table; he just mechanically chewed, filling his stomach.
The balcony door hadn’t been closed tightly, and a cool breeze snuck in, wrapping around Lu Feiran’s ankles. He shivered, dazedly walked towards the balcony, wanting to close the door properly.
Through the crack in the door, Lu Feiran saw a flash of bright blue light. Pushing the door open, he saw Lance lying on a lounge chair, a blue ribbon-wrapped cigarette held between his long, slender fingers.
Lance’s fingers were very nimble; the cigarette circled around his fingers before settling between his index and ring fingers again.
The cigarette was burning, but Lance hadn’t taken a single puff.
“Come here.” Lance’s gaze was fixed on the overcast sky, but he had already sensed Lu Feiran’s approach.
The memory of last night was stirred up by Lance’s call. Lu Feiran was frightened out of his wits, hiding behind the glass door. The transparent glass couldn’t conceal the awkwardness and panic on his face.
He dug his nails into his palm, forcing himself to calm down. He had to pretend to have amnesia. Wouldn’t refusing to go over expose his lie?
He walked over stiffly. Seeing that Lance didn’t turn his gaze toward him, Lu Feiran breathed a slight sigh of relief. Just as he was about to speak, Lance interrupted him first.
“I’m waiting for your answer. You’re not going to say… you forgot, are you?”
Lance’s voice was cold. His gaze moved over, like an interrogation aimed at a stranger, making Lu Feiran’s heart seize up.
His strategy of pretending to black out after drinking was exposed just like that?
Lu Feiran’s mind suddenly went blank. He couldn’t recall what Lance had said last night, so he could only honestly say, “I really forgot… could you ask again?”
Even Lu Feiran himself didn’t realize that he always became very compliant in front of Lance.
He liked the feeling of being near Lance. Even with imminent danger, he still chose to walk over and squat next to his lounge chair.
Up close, the sense of disharmony was more obvious. Lu Feiran felt that Lance wasn’t gentle at all. Even the look he gave him was like a knife slicing through cold air.
Lu Feiran hugged his knees, swallowed hard, and forced himself to look down, preventing his gaze from landing on Lance’s lips.
If Lance was going to ask about that, he would apologize sincerely.
“Alright, I’ll ask you,” Lance finally smiled, staring at the back of Lu Feiran’s bowed head, at the patch of pale skin revealed beneath his black hair. “Who sent you the flowers? Who did you drink with?”
“Xiaohua sent them, and I drank with Xiaohua,” Lu Feiran felt a little guilty.
“Then who is Frank?”
Lu Feiran was stunned, instantly looking up. Frank only chatted with him for a few minutes; how did Lance even bring him up?
“Heh,” Lance saw Lu Feiran’s hesitation and asked the last question: “What was the meaning of kissing me? Can you give a reasonable answer? Answer them one by one.”
“I went drinking with Zhou Zihua yesterday. There was a host there who was very good at coaxing people, named Frank…”
The cigarette was snuffed out and dropped to the ground.
Lu Feiran’s dark pupils widened suddenly. He took two steps back, then, as if making some kind of resolution, he bowed a super-respectful ninety degrees.
Lance’s eyebrow arched slightly.
“I’m sorry! I lost control due to alcohol. I sincerely apologize!” Lu Feiran admitted his mistake loudly, attempting to gain forgiveness.
“What do you think our relationship is?”
“Friends?” Lu Feiran was confused, but then quickly apologized again, terrified that Lance would cut ties with him. “Don’t be angry, I admit my mistake, I truly was wrong!”
“Do friends lose control to the point of kissing?” Lance lowered his eyes, appearing somewhat nonchalant. “How long have you and Xiaohua known each other?”
“Uh… almost twenty years?”
“How many times have you kissed him?”
Lu Feiran was shocked and shook his head repeatedly: “How could I kiss him… absolutely zero times!”
Lance: “Then do you often lose control?”
Lu Feiran choked: “Not often.”
Lance sat up from the lounge chair and beckoned to Lu Feiran: “Closer.”
Lu Feiran’s heart pounded. He couldn’t discern Lance’s thoughts from his expression. He didn’t want to go closer, but couldn’t stand the guilt, so he obediently walked over to “be slaughtered.”
Unexpectedly, as soon as he closed the distance slightly, Lance’s long arm wrapped around him, pressing the back of Lu Feiran’s neck and pulling him to a distance of less than an inch away.
Lance gently cupped Lu Feiran’s chin, seeing his own smiling reflection in Lu Feiran’s pupils: “Haven’t you realized the reason for kissing me yet?”
…Why did he kiss him?
The scene from last night suddenly became crystal clear. Lu Feiran abruptly understood why he had leaned in to kiss him.
He missed him, he wanted to look at him, he wanted to be with him. He wanted to look at him again, hug him, and even…
He was captivated. He had developed inappropriate feelings for his good friend, for his ex-husband’s fiancé.
Perhaps it was the alcohol, or perhaps it was getting the divorce certificate, but the faint emotions broke through the fence and surged into a river.
Lance kissed him. This time, Lu Feiran closed his eyes.
Unlike last night, it was no longer a simple pressing of lip to lip, but an aggressive conquest.
Lu Feiran felt like all the air in his body was being sucked away. He was being held in the mouth of a wild beast, whose sharp teeth were about to pierce his skin and violently chew him clean.
Lance’s kiss was completely different from the gentle and amiable persona he usually displayed. Lu Feiran was frightened, but he clenched his fists and did not pull away.
After a long time, Lance stopped. Lu Feiran heard him say in a husky voice, “Are we still friends?”
Lu Feiran covered his mouth and didn’t speak, wishing he could bury his head in the floor.
Lance didn’t force him, removing his hand and rubbing the lips that had been reddened by his own biting: “Ranran, let’s add a modifier to ‘friend.’ Can it be ‘friends who frequently kiss’?”
He sounded like he was being rejected and was settling for less, unwillingly guarding the title of “friend,” which made Lu Feiran feel he was humble and pitiful.
But what kind of friends have this kind of relationship?
Are these proper friends?
Lu Feiran looked up and was stunned to see Lance’s reddened eyes.
Lance said, “Ranran, I might not have much time left. Can you stay by my side and like me a little more?”
“What do you mean ‘not much time’?” Lu Feiran gasped.
Lance gave a bitter smile: “I might genuinely have to get married.”
“WHAT!!!”
Zhou Zihua had mentioned that the DeWei family was already preparing for the wedding. Was it truly a settled matter that couldn’t be changed?
Zhai Qiance must have been impatient to tell them about the divorce immediately!
“Who is it?” Lu Feiran asked a silly question.
Lance gave Lu Feiran a meaningful look and glanced at his phone nearby.
Following the gaze, Lu Feiran saw a few unread messages on Lance’s phone. The contact was Zhai Qiance.
[Your mother has chosen a few dates. She wants you to make the final decision.]
[1/16, 1/26…]
“Don’t agree to him!” Lu Feiran sounded like a warlike male bird. “I-I’ll move over here. Don’t meet with him!”
Lance said, “Okay.”
Lu Feiran paced like a trapped animal. How could he stop them from getting married? Would hiring someone to commit murder work…?
He shook his head. He couldn’t do that. He had to use other methods to keep all of Lance’s attention focused on him.
“I’ll go back first to grab some luggage. I’ll be back before dinner.”
“Mm.”
After Lu Feiran left, Lance logged out of “Noen’s” WeChat account on his phone, stretched, and lit another cigarette.
This time, he held the smoke in his mouth.
…
Zhai Qiance kept his word and decisively moved out of Egret Garden.
But Lu Feiran could still see many traces of their past life in the house.
In the bedroom, an entire wall was covered with their wedding photos. Lu Feiran couldn’t calmly look at Zhai Qiance’s face anymore. He pulled down a bed sheet, found some nails, and aggressively hammered the nails into Zhai Qiance’s forehead on the photo. The bed sheet covered half the wall, leaving only half of his own face exposed.
It looked much more comfortable.
Lu Feiran surveyed the house upstairs and downstairs. There were too many things to throw away, and he didn’t know where to start.
Never mind. He called the recycling center directly, asking them to quickly arrange several large trucks to move everything out of the house.
He didn’t care if they sold it secondhand or just threw it away; he needed Egret Garden emptied within 24 hours!
Lu Feiran then contacted an interior designer, asking the designer to come over the day after tomorrow for a radical overhaul of the entire Egret Garden.
He didn’t have too many clothes. He selected some he particularly liked and felt comfortable in, called a car, and took them all with him.
After half a day of running around, when he returned to Lance’s house, he smelled the aroma of food.
Lu Feiran had never known what it felt like to have someone wait for him at home for dinner.
The smell was sweet and also slightly sour.
He walked into the kitchen and hugged Lance from behind. Since they had already kissed, a hug should be fine, right?
Lance reached back, pulled Lu Feiran close, pressed the back of his head, and bit his lip.
Lu Feiran was bewildered.
Why do we keep kissing…? Is this what “friends who frequently kiss” means? It’s too improper.
It shouldn’t be this way, but there was no suitable title to give each other either.
Start a two-month relationship before the wedding date at the end of the year?
He would definitely be reluctant to break up, Lu Feiran thought.
But if they were still together then, wouldn’t he become…
His phone rang. It was Zhou Zihua.
He pressed the answer button, and a lively voice came from Zhou Zihua’s end: “Ranran, Ranran, you don’t have anything going on recently, want to join us for a road trip? We’re hiking up the mountain, camping overnight, and watching the sunrise. What do you say?”
Lu Feiran hesitated a bit: “Who else is going? I don’t have any experience, I won’t hold you guys back, will I?”
“No worries! My cousin is coming, and he’s bringing Frank.” Zhou Zihua was completely casual. “You know, Frank works part-time at night to save up for tuition. He’s going to the Berlin University of the Arts next spring. You two must have common interests! Come on, come on. Frank is a beginner too, so you two beginners can be partners.”
“Uh…” Lu Feiran suddenly felt cold around him. An ominous chill emanated from Lance. He quickly said, “Can I bring a friend? My friend and I will take one car, and you three can be together.”
Zhou Zihua: “You have a friend I don’t know about? Great, bring them! I want to see who it is! It’s settled then. I’ll send you the time and location later. You’ll need to buy some gear; I’ll send you the checklist.”
Lu Feiran hastily hung up the phone, tossed it aside, tiptoed to wrap his arms around Lance’s neck, rubbed his nose against Lance’s, and gently kissed his lips a few times.
“Go play with me. The two of us together.” He looked up timidly, meeting Lance’s eyes, implicitly hinting, “Can you put everything aside and play with me for a few days?”
“I can.”
Seeing that Lance wasn’t unhappy, Lu Feiran kissed his cheek, like a little bird, and flew off to pack his things.
“Frank? Common interests? Heh…”
Lance wiped his cheek. A moment of obsessed expression appeared on his face, then quickly returned to normal.
