Chapter 29: Hiking 1: “He cheated, so for revenge, you also…”
Lu Feiran was organizing his clothes in the walk-in closet when he glanced at the full-length mirror and saw a white figure standing behind him.
Lu Feiran jumped slightly and cautiously patted his chest.
Lance was standing behind him, having watched for an unknown amount of time.
When Lu Feiran noticed him, Lance stepped closer, enveloping Lu Feiran in his firm, broad embrace, like a pale shadow that made Lu Feiran feel a surge of tension.
Lance rubbed his cheek against Lu Feiran’s forehead and asked, “If I hadn’t heard you take that call just now, would you still have taken me?”
Lance’s question conveyed his insecurity to Lu Feiran. Lu Feiran squeezed Lance’s fingers and replied firmly, “Yes, I would.”
“Good, I believe you, Ranran.”
Lance sounded as if he feared Lu Feiran might change his mind, asking Lu Feiran to look into his eyes and say it again.
Lu Feiran had to repeat it again and again.
The helplessness and fear beneath Lance’s polished exterior were directly communicated to Lu Feiran. The closer Lu Feiran got to Lance, the more he felt sorry for him.
Was being kissed by him and given a vague promise enough for him to cling to it like a life raft?
Their positions were reversed. Lu Feiran had become the one who could save Lance from the quagmire. It felt surreal.
“Alright, let’s see what we need to buy for the trip.” Lu Feiran clicked on Zhou Zihua’s chat history and forwarded the checklist to Lance. “Xiaohua said this is a beginner’s route, so we won’t be without signal for long. Although he prepared walkie-talkies, phones will still be useful, so don’t worry too much. Have you ever done this kind of trip before?”
Lance quickly scanned the list. He wanted to say he didn’t understand these things but swallowed the words and said, “I have experience.”
Lu Feiran’s eyes lit up: “Really? You really can do everything!”
Surprise and adoration mixed together, rushing towards Lance like a warm wind.
In this moment, Lu Feiran’s mind and eyes were filled with only him. Lance was certain of this.
There was a bottomless hole in his chest, constantly tempting Lu Feiran to fill it with love, but it was like trying to put out a fire with a cup of water; he always felt it wasn’t enough.
If no one had invited Lu Feiran to hike, would Lu Feiran have brought it up on his own? Why couldn’t this be something exclusively for him and Lu Feiran?
Lance felt like he was ten years old again, possessing deep desires for many things, yet feeling pent-up due to dissatisfaction.
Overnight, they had made significant progress, entering a territory Lance had never experienced before.
He had watched many romance films; most protagonists quickly confirm their relationship after kissing. Why wasn’t it like that with him and Lu Feiran?
What part of the process went wrong? Was it because Lu Feiran wasn’t divorced, or was it… that he didn’t feel love for Lu Feiran?
Lance considered his performance flawless. An extremely gentle and attentive partner should be the ideal type for most people. The qualities he displayed were completely different from Zhai Qiance’s, so it was impossible for him not to attract Lu Feiran.
The problem, then, lay in Lu Feiran not being divorced.
Even if the marriage was already in name only, Lu Feiran was a traditional person. He couldn’t accept being in a relationship with someone else while still married.
…
Three days later, they set off for WuXia Mountain.
Lu Feiran was wearing an orange outdoor jacket. Lance zipped it up all the way, making the collar stand up and cover half of his face.
The orange was too bright, and Lu Feiran didn’t really like it. He complained a few times in the car, looking out the window, saying Lance was forcing him to wear it against his preference.
Lance pinched Lu Feiran’s chin to make him turn his head and said solemnly, “Orange is conspicuous. I need to be able to see you immediately.”
“…Alright then.” Lu Feiran scratched his hair, the slightly long strands hanging near his eyes.
Lance told Lu Feiran to turn his head back again, took a black hair tie from the storage box, and used his long fingers like a comb to push Lu Feiran’s hair back.
“Your hair is long. Are you trying to grow it out, Ranran?”
Lu Feiran: “No, I’ve just been busy recently and haven’t had time to get a haircut.”
The feeling of Lance’s fingertip massage on his scalp was very comfortable. Lu Feiran couldn’t help but arch into Lance’s palm, squinting his eyes and yawning.
He had a sudden idea: “If I decide to grow my hair out, can you teach me how to style it?”
His semi-long hair was already tied up at the back of Lu Feiran’s head, exposing his smooth forehead and beautiful face, making him look like succulent fruit, inviting a taste.
“Leave it to me.” Lance’s gaze greedily swept over his face before starting the car.
They met Zhou Zihua at a service area on the outskirts of the city.
Lance went to park the car. Lu Feiran found Zhou Zihua first, greeted his cousin Jiang Li, and then his eyes fell on Frank, feeling a little awkward.
Frank didn’t mind Lu Feiran’s expression and smiled as he greeted him: “Mr. Lu, I’m very happy to have the opportunity to come out and play with you. I didn’t expect to meet again so soon after we parted last time.”
Lu Feiran merely nodded politely in response.
Frank didn’t continue the conversation, quietly drinking hot water from his thermos.
Zhou Zihua was a little puzzled. He thought Lu Feiran and Frank got along very well, and since his cousin was familiar with Frank, he had invited Frank along.
After learning that Frank was a genuine college student working part-time to pay for school, Zhou Zihua even planned to set him up with Lu Feiran.
What’s wrong with a single person having a little romance with a handsome young man? At worst, they could break up when Frank went abroad, and then he would introduce Lu Feiran to someone new.
“We still have over 500 kilometers to go. It’s not a huge distance, but it’s not short either. If your friend gets tired of driving, just call me, and I’ll take over,” Zhou Zihua said thoughtfully.
“No need, I am sufficient.”
Lance walked over at some point, attracting the attention of everyone present.
Beneath his dark blue outdoor jacket, his long legs, clad in short boots, looked intimidating. He rested his hand on Lu Feiran’s shoulder, pulling Lu Feiran closer to him, his possessiveness clearly evident.
More than his striking figure and features, Zhou Zihua was shocked by his blonde hair and blue eyes.
Zhou Zihua was so surprised he nearly lost control of his expression. He pursed his lips and gave Lu Feiran a sideways look, accusing him with his eyes of being dishonest. If he had known the “friend” was like this, he wouldn’t have invited Frank.
Now everyone was embarrassed!
“Hahahaha, Ranran, why don’t you introduce him to us?” Zhou Zihua tried to smooth things over.
Lu Feiran was helpless and had to say, “His name is Noen. He’s my friend.”
Zhou Zihua froze.
Jiang Li also looked subtle, his gaze lingering on the two of them. Of course, he recognized Noen… Noen didn’t look exactly like this, but there was a three-tenths resemblance.
A name was on the tip of his tongue, but Jiang Li felt like his throat was constricted.
What was going on?
He looked around. Frank didn’t seem to recognize the man, just maintaining a smile. Zhou Zihua was both embarrassed and annoyed, while Lu Feiran looked helpless and flustered.
The person calling himself “Noen” cast a cold, contemptuous glance at Frank, then subtly withdrew it, turning a very gentle smile towards Lu Feiran.
If not for deliberate observation, no one would have noticed Lance’s look.
Was this some kind of role-playing game? Jiang Li decided to pretend he knew nothing.
“Ranran, come on, let’s go to the restroom!”
Lu Feiran was dragged into the restroom by Zhou Zihua, who practically held him hostage.
“Who is that person?! You’re not kidding me, are you?” Zhou Zihua was close to losing it.
Lu Feiran’s eyes darted around. The matter he had been concealing was finally exposed to Zhou Zihua, causing him to fumble even the carefully prepared excuses from last night.
“That’s him… Zhai Qiance’s intended marriage partner.”
“You know they’re getting married at the end of the year, don’t you? Huh?”
The accusatory tone sparked a rebellious streak in Lu Feiran. He slightly raised his chin, saying nonchalantly, “I know. So what? It’s a business marriage. They don’t have feelings for each other. At most, they’ve met a few times for business cooperation.”
“So what?!” Zhou Zihua couldn’t help but applaud Lu Feiran. “He cheated, so for revenge, you also snatched his fiancé?”
Lu Feiran frowned: “Who’s seeking revenge? Noen and I are just friends.”
Everything he did was based on his own choice. It had nothing to do with Zhai Qiance! That would just elevate Zhai Qiance’s importance!
“Huh? Friends? Who would believe that? The way he looks at you is completely wrong.” Zhou Zihua recalled that gloomy look, filled with intense possessiveness. Lance didn’t even want him to offer to drive, as if their car were the couple’s exclusive love nest.
“We are just friends right now, but we won’t be soon,” Lu Feiran’s voice was soft but absolutely certain, full of confidence, like a proud cat. “I like him. I’m going to make him give up the marriage for me.”
“You told me he doesn’t know who you are. Have you ever considered that once he finds out you approached him while concealing your identity, he might mistakenly think you approached him out of unrequited love for Zhai Qiance and are deliberately trying to sabotage things?”
Zhou Zihua was worried about Lu Feiran. He gripped his shoulders and painstakingly analyzed the pros and cons: “Maybe he likes you a little now, but it’s all based on a lie. Your relationship is fundamentally impure! Ranran, you say it’s not revenge. I hope it genuinely isn’t. Don’t let yourself be embarrassed or hurt because of a tantrum, okay?”
“He won’t hurt me. I can be sure of that.”
Lu Feiran smiled at Zhou Zihua. He was very certain that Lance wasn’t that kind of person. Even if the truth came out and their relationship ended, Lance would ensure a graceful conclusion.
“Alright, don’t keep them waiting any longer.”
Back in the car, Lu Feiran thought for a long time. Zhou Zihua had pinpointed the reason why he didn’t dare to take the next step to officially confirm their relationship with Lance.
No matter how many times they passionately kissed, until Lance gave up the business marriage, he didn’t dare to say the words, “Be my boyfriend.”
Otherwise, once they got married, what would he become? The mistress who intervened in his ex-husband’s marriage?
Lu Feiran was spaced out. Outside the window, Zhou Zihua’s group walked by. Frank and Zhou Zihua’s gazes simultaneously swept across their windshield, seemingly just a casual glance.
Lance, however, happened to drop a light kiss on Lu Feiran’s forehead.
Frank wasn’t surprised. From the moment Lance appeared, he understood why Mr. Zhou had sought him out and even invited him to hike.
It was just that his timing was unfortunate. Compared to the original person, he was naturally inferior.
He could only stand quietly in the corner of their group, always ready, waiting for Lu Feiran to turn around and notice him.
…
At this point, Lu Feiran’s last line of defense was withdrawn.
He casually asked, “Aren’t you curious about Frank?”
“I don’t care,” Lance said. “Even if he looks a lot like me.”
“He doesn’t look like you. You are unique.”
Lu Feiran’s eyes shone like polished obsidian. He stated his explanation to Lance, his tone subtle but his meaning direct, almost an outright confession.
No longer shy, no longer hesitant, and without considering future consequences, Lu Feiran only wanted what he desired most right now.
No matter what, Lance had to respond to him, placing him in an equal position in his heart.
Lu Feiran thought this, pulled Lance’s collar, drew him close, and actively kissed him, prying open his lips and teeth, going deep inside, getting entangled by the long tongue, and having his breath suppressed.
In the joining of their lips and teeth, that direct love flooded into the void in Lance’s body, giving him an unprecedented sense of satisfaction.
