- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 64 - Sleeping Outside Tonight
The barrage of comments in the live stream paused for a few seconds when the faces of the two newcomers came into view.
Then, the screen exploded.
[What the hell, it’s Bai Hansui and Huo Chilin!]
[Seriously? How are they still allowed on the show? Isn’t Bai Hansui public enemy number one now?]
[Ughhhhh, I’m gonna puke. Why invite this trashy couple? I can’t stand it.]
[Is Director Miao insane? The show was forced to pause because of them, and now he dares to bring them back? Does he want the show canceled again?]
To be fair, Director Miao was also frustrated. He didn’t want to invite them either, but Huo Chilin had offered too much money.
Moreover, Huo Chilin had assured him that the show wouldn’t be suspended this time.
The hype around Bai Hansui had died down recently, and bringing them back would not only secure funding but also attract a ton of attention—killing two birds with one stone.
The moment Shen Lai saw them, she turned to Pei Jingyan, looking surprised. “Why are they here?”
Pei Jingyan’s gaze was deep and unreadable, impossible to decipher.
As if sensing the stares from their direction, Huo Chilin suddenly turned his head and locked eyes with Pei Jingyan. An invisible tension crackled in the air between them.
After learning that Director Miao had revived the show, Huo Chilin immediately had his assistant contact him.
He would never allow Pei Jingyan and Shen Lai to be alone together again.
Unaware of the undercurrents between the two men, Director Miao cheerfully continued with his megaphone, “These two don’t need introductions, we’re all familiar with them.”
Bai Hansui acted as if nothing had ever happened, greeting everyone with effortless grace. “Hello, everyone.”
Among the crowd, only Tong Miaoling smiled at her from afar.
Bai Hansui returned the smile gratefully.
“Mr. Huo, Miss Bai, please find your seats,” Director Miao reminded them.
Huo Chilin responded with a low hum. Without hesitation, he walked straight to the spot next to Shen Lai.
[??? What is this guy doing?]
[Is he seriously just planting himself next to Shen Lai like that?]
[Is he here for Shen Lai?]
[You’re not the only one thinking that, it’s way too obvious this time.]
[Current husband on the right, ex-boyfriend on the left… this sandwich arrangement is kinda weird.]
[I think I smell gunpowder in the air.]
Bai Hansui hadn’t expected Huo Chilin to drop all pretense on the show, making his desire to get close to Shen Lai so blatant.
Her expression stiffened for a split second before she quickly regained her composure, flashing a flawless smile as she walked over to Huo Chilin. “Chilin, you picked such a great spot, no sun at all.”
Huo Chilin responded with a cold hum.
His indifferent attitude made Bai Hansui clench her fists discreetly.
Lately, Huo Chilin had completely cut off contact with her. If not for her pregnancy, he might still be ignoring her to this day.
Huo Chilin’s attention remained fixed on Shen Lai. When no one was looking, he leaned in and whispered, “Surprised to see me here?”
Shen Lai frowned, pretending not to hear, and turned to talk to Wu Qi beside her.
Huo Chilin gritted his teeth, but with the cameras rolling, he had no choice but to swallow his words.
He refused to believe that Shen Lai truly had no feelings for him at all. She was just still angry with him. Once he proved himself, she would surely return to his side.
As for Pei Jingyan, how could any real feelings develop between them in such a short time?
As the four teams of guests successfully gathered, Director Miao announced the first task of the day: building a simple shelter.
“Since there are no accommodations on the island, each guest will need to pitch their own tent to ensure they have a place to sleep tonight.”
“You can choose any location to set up your tent, there are no restrictions.”
The task was relatively simple. After the production team distributed the tools, everyone began searching for spots to set up their tents.
This was Shen Lai’s first time pitching a tent. Unable to hold back, she asked Pei Jingyan, “Do you know how to set up a tent?”
Pei Jingyan glanced at her sideways. “You don’t?”
Shen Lai shook her head honestly.
Whenever she had gone on trips before, everything had been arranged for her, so she’d never had to do such things herself.
Shen Lai lowered her voice. “Should I ask Mr. Yan for help?”
Pei Jingyan narrowed his eyes slightly. “Miss Shen, your husband is right here. If you go asking another man for help, where does that leave my dignity?”
Perhaps because she had heard Pei Jingyan refer to himself as her “husband” so often, Shen Lai was already somewhat numb to it. She even had the energy to retort, “Isn’t that better than having nowhere to sleep tonight?”
Seeing Shen Lai’s obvious lack of confidence in him, Pei Jingyan smirked. “Don’t worry, I won’t let you feed the mosquitoes tonight.”
With that, Pei Jingyan scanned the surroundings before finally choosing a spot near the entrance to the forest. He then took out the tent and began setting it up.
Watching Pei Jingyan’s skilled movements, surprise flickered in Shen Lai’s eyes. “You know how to pitch a tent?”
Pei Jingyan replied nonchalantly, “I’ve been camping with friends before.”
No wonder Pei Jingyan was so confident and didn’t need Yan Rui’s help.
He was an old hand at this.
Curious, Shen Lai asked, “Why set up the tent here?”
Pei Jingyan tilted his chin toward the front. “The tide rises at night. If the tent is pitched too low, it’ll easily get flooded.”
Shen Lai hadn’t expected Pei Jingyan to know such things. She blinked. “You’re familiar with this stuff?”
Pei Jingyan gave her a deep look, teasing, “Unlike someone who can’t do anything.”
“I’ve never gone camping with friends before,” Shen Lai muttered, then blurted out without thinking, “Besides, isn’t that what you’re here for?”
The moment the words left her mouth, both of them froze.
Shen Lai belatedly realized what she had said. Her expression turned awkward, especially when she noticed the playful glint in Pei Jingyan’s eyes. Flustered, she averted her gaze and quickly changed the subject. “Um, is there anything I can help with?”
Pei Jingyan curled his lips, his eyes briefly flickering to Shen Lai’s abdomen. “No need. Go sit down—it’ll be done soon.”
With that, he continued setting up the tent, his back radiating a sense of satisfaction.
Shen Lai hesitated but ultimately decided not to get in the way. She found a rock to sit on and watched Pei Jingyan work, her heart feeling as though it had been gently brushed by a soft feather.
Now that she thought about it, Pei Jingyan had never asked her to do anything.
Whenever something came up, he was always the one stepping forward to handle it for her.
Even back when she was with Huo Chilin, he had never treated her this well.
Before long, Pei Jingyan had the tent fully set up.
Pei Jingyan raised an eyebrow. “Want to go in and try it out?”
Shen Lai nodded. She took off her shoes and stepped into the tent, feeling the soft sand beneath her feet. Sitting inside was incredibly comfortable.
Pei Jingyan stood outside, one hand resting on the top of the tent as he looked down at Shen Lai. “How is it?”
Shen Lai gave him a thumbs-up. “As expected of President Pei. Impressive.”
A faint smile tugged at the corner of Pei Jingyan’s lips. “Is that a compliment?”
Shen Lai replied earnestly, “Of course. If it weren’t for you, we’d be sleeping outside tonight.”
When Huo Chilin glanced back, he saw Pei Jingyan leaning against the outside of the tent, chatting with Shen Lai. There was a bright spark of joy in Shen Lai’s eyes, genuine happiness.
Huo Chilin clenched his fists tightly.
He couldn’t even remember the last time Shen Lai had smiled at him like that.
